Memorial Day: The History, the Holiday By John Hall, Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette

Memorial Day – the commemorative holiday and the “kick off to summer” holiday. To start, we will give you information on how Memorial Day came into being in “Memorial Day: Did You Know?” Then in “Military Honors: One Final Salute” you will learn about the two different types of military honors available to veterans. Under U.S. law, military funeral honors are provided, upon request, for every deceased veteran of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard and Selected Reserve. When you read this article you will also learn key information on how to request military honors for a loved one. Since Memorial Day has evolved to also mark the unofficial start of our summer recreational season, we will provide you with tips for cooking over a campfire, something that many will do this summer. We will not only give you great tips for building a successful campfire, but also tips on the gear to pack along and how to prep foods in advance – unless of course you’re hunting and fishing as you go. Find out all about that in “Cooking Over a Campfire.”

We have also found a great Memorial Day recipe at Food52.com. You can easily add this one to the menu for your celebrations. You will find the delicious “how to” details in “Grilled Corn with Basil Butter.” And finally, as the fog of the pandemic restrictions begins to lift, we have a great list of family fun ideas that will propel you and yours through the entire 3-day weekend, and beyond. So enjoy the issue and then be sure and join us next time when we will focus on local farms and farmers, and our great regional Farmers’ Markets.

It’s Spring! and the Lehigh Township Historical Society is gearing up for one of our annual events to be held in early June. In the last issue of the Gazette we had an ad for it and you can find more information on our Facebook page and our website at www. lehightownshiphistoricalsociety.org. For more details, please call our office at 610-440-0151 and leave a message. Due to several issues, we will not be holding open house visitations at the Historical Centre Museum this summer, nor will we be open to do research until later in the year. Watch our website for updates. We are, however, receiving donations of items and artifacts by appointment only, which can be arranged by calling our office at the number above. Pennsylvania, put flowers on the graves of their fallen soldiers from the just-fought Battle of Gettysburg. The next year, a group of women decorated the graves of soldiers buried in a Vicksburg, Mississippi cemetery. Two years later, women from Columbus, Mississippi, laid flowers on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. In the same month, in Carbondale, Illinois, two hundred and nineteen Civil War veterans marched through town to Woodlawn Cemetery in memory of the fallen, where Union hero Major General John A. Logan delivered the principal address. The ceremony gave Carbondale its claim to the first organized, community-wide Memorial Day observance. Waterloo, New York, began holding an annual community service on May 5, 1866. Although many towns claimed the title, it was Waterloo that won congressional recognition as the "Birthplace of Memorial Day." Making it Official General Logan, the speaker at the Carbondale gathering, was also commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans. On May 5, 1868, he issued General Order No. 11, which set aside May 30, 1868 "for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion." The orders expressed hope that the observance would be "kept up from year to year while a survivor of the war remains to honor the memory of his departed comrades." Memorial Day Customs General Order No. 11 stated that "in this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed," but over time, several customs and symbols
became associated with the holiday. Most notably, it is customary on Memorial Day to fly the flag at half-staff until noon, and then raise it to the top of the staff until sunset. In 1915, a Georgia teacher and volunteer war worker named Moina Michael began a campaign to make the poppy a symbol of tribute to veterans and for "keeping the faith with all who died." The sale of poppies has supported the work of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Military Honors: One Final Salute
SOURCE: people.howstuffworks.com
Military honors are a final act of recognition and respect for those who served in the United States armed forces and include the presentation of a carefully folded American flag and the ceremonial playing of taps. Under U.S. law, military funeral honors are provided, upon request, for every deceased veteran of the Army,
Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard and Selected Reserve. This law was enacted in 1999. All individuals who were active duty in any branch of the military and received an honorable or general discharge, or died while active duty, are qualified to receive funeral honors. you as a "veteran." There are, however, two different types of military honors that are provided for veterans, depending on whether they were career military and the circumstances of their death. Basic Military Honors Basic honors are provided for veterans who served in any branch of the military, in wartime or peace, and were then discharged honorably. Basic honors include a detail of at least two members of the armed forces, one of whom must be a member of the branch in which the deceased veteran served.
During the funeral service, taps (a bugle call played at military funerals as well as flag ceremonies) must be played. Then two uniformed individuals ceremoniously fold and present an American flag to the next of kin. The flag is folded in a very precise way so it ends up in a triangle with only the blue field visible. Full Military Honors Full military honors come in modified and "complete" versions. Modified full military honors are provided for any veteran who retired from the military – meaning they served a minimum of 20 years in active duty – or who died during active duty in noncombat-related circumstances. In both of those cases, modified full military honors include the folding and presentation of the flag and the sounding of taps, plus pallbearers and a ceremonial, threevolley rifle firing. If a service member is killed in combat he or she will receive full military honors, which includes everything mentioned above plus a six-person flag folding, during which the flag Continued on page 16

that was draped over the coffin is lifted by the six pallbearers and folded in unison. The coffin may also be carried on a horse-drawn caisson (wheeled cart). Commissioned officers and Medal of Honor recipients are also eligible for full honors. Requesting Military Honors When a veteran dies, the funeral home is typically the one to initiate a request for military honors. As part of the process, the military requires proof of service. This is normally a discharge document known as a DD Form 214. If families no longer have the original, they can request a free copy through the Department of Defense. There's even a same-day emergency request line. All honor guard soldiers receive three days of training on the basic funeral honors and a weeklong training to perform the full honors. While the members of the honor guard are paid for their service, it's completely free to the families of the deceased.

Cooking Over a Campfire (excerpt) SOURCE: mossyoak.com
Is there anything more relaxing than cooking over an open campfire? The natural wood smoke imparts an incredible flavor to any dish, while the soft crackle of flames makes campfire cooking a soothing way to enjoy the great outdoors. Here are eight tips for success when cooking over a campfire. Build It Correctly Building a campfire involves burning plenty of wood until there are red hot coals to deliver even cooking. There are several factors you should consider. Wood / Wood for a campfire should burn slowly and evenly. Oak and hickory are popular options. However, ash is a great alternative and can be easily sourced at your campsite. Location / Select a safe location to build your Continued on page 18

campfire, preferably in a pre-dug fire pit. The site should be sheltered from the wind and free from grass, leaves, and other debris. Clearance / It is recommended that you have 10 feet of clearance on every side of the fire. Form a perimeter with green wood or rocks to prevent your fire from spreading. A large rock at the rear of the fire site can act as a chimney to funnel away smoke. Building It / Start by laying down tinder, such as crumpled-up newspaper or dry grass, and then pile thin twigs or dry branches in a vertical conical shape on top. Light the tinder, and add larger dry branches as the smaller ones ignite. Begin to add your firewood over

the kindling and let it burn until you are left with white coals. This may take from 45 minutes to an hour. Use the Right Gear Grill Grate / This is an excellent choice for a cooking surface. You can grill meat and vegetables directly on the grate or use it as a stand to hold pots and pans. Cast Iron Cookware / Recommended, as the dense metal retains heat and distributes it more evenly. Utensils / Pack stainless steel tongs and a long-handled spoon, as well as grill gloves, a wire grill brush, and a digital meat thermometer. Aluminum Foil / Aluminum foil can line cookware, wrap fruits and vegetables for cooking, and in a pinch can be molded to form a basic pot or serving bowl. Final Tips • Do food prep at home • Store cold produce, meat and dairy in an ice-packed cooler for freshness • Cook over coals, not flames • If cooking wild game, bring cast iron cookware for low, slow cooking • For hot dogs or s’mores, a few long skewers or a grate grill will do • Have a spray bottle handy for grease flareups to keep your campfire contained • Have a bucket of water and a bucket of sand to quickly douse and dampen flames as necessary, or to completely put out your fire and smother your fire coals until cold. Grilled Corn with Basil Butter
SOURCE: Food52.com
Easy, breezy outdoor meals are a hallmark of summer. From last-minute picnics in parks to quick dinners eaten poolside (or just in the backyard), we want dishes that satisfy us without excessive
planning or preparation. Summer technically begins June 21, but Memorial Day is our first long weekend in warm, sunny weather. Here is a simple, warm-weather go-to recipe – perfect for celebrating your first (unofficial) day of the season in style. Grilled Corn with Basil Butter The flavors in this quick and easy grilled corn are magical: the herby basil butter complements the natural sweetness of the corn, while the char from the grilling adds a nice element of smokiness. This is a fast and simple way to make corn truly sing. The basil adds a delightful brightness to the sweet corn, and it plays perfectly with the traditional butter and salt additions. Grilling the

Family Fun Ideas for Memorial Day SOURCE: verywellfamily.com
Memorial Day weekend is almost here. And if you’re fully vaccinated you no longer need masks most places, which is sure to lighten the mood this holiday weekend. We visited verywellfamily.com and came up with all kinds of family fun ideas to keep that good mood going across the entire three days. If your kids get in an “artsy” mood, any of these activities is sure to please: • Collect rocks and paint them. Turn them into pet rocks, garden ornaments, or gifts for family members. • Create a summer mural. Stretch a long piece of white craft paper across a wall in the basement or garage and create a family mural. Work on it all summer adding hand-drawn, painted, or colored pictures of your summer activities. Add to it little by little and hold an "unveiling" party for relatives around Labor Day.

Spending an afternoon setting up a bug motel (a cozy box or container meant to attract nesting insects) not only keeps your little ones busy, but it’s also an educational activity. Once your bug motel is built, your kids can check frequently to see what kinds of insects have “checked in” and what they’re up to. Vaccine Surveys Submitted by STEVE GARDNER
FREE ESTIMATES • FULLY INSURED • DRIVEWAYS & SEAL COATING • PARKING LOTS & GAS STATION • PATIO PAVERS & RETAINING WALLS
Con artists are trying to take advantage of the millions of Americans who have received their COVID vaccines by sending fake surveys asking about their experience. These emails and texts look legitimate and may even include the logos of the vaccine manufacturers, but what they are really looking for is your sensitive personal information. Three things included in these “surveys” let you know they are a scam. First, they offer a prize for participating. Second, the message says you need to reply “right away.” And third, if you do engage with the “survey” you are asked to provide a credit card or other payment information. Be a fraud fighter. If you can spot a scam, you can stop a scam. Report scams to local law enforcement. For help from AARP, call 1-877-908-3360 or visit the AARP Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/ fraudwatchnetwork.

Indoor and Outdoor Events and Gatherings Maximum Capacity increaded for Pa. submitted by LYNDSAY KENSINGER
The Wolf Administration recently announced that event and gathering maximum occupancy limits were increased to 50 percent for indoor events and gatherings and 75 percent for outdoor events and gatherings effective Monday, May 17 at 12:01 a.m. “As more Pennsylvania adults get vaccinated and guidance from the CDC evolves, we can continue to move forward with the commonwealth’s reopening efforts,” said Governor Wolf. “We recognize the significant strain businesses have faced during COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Throughout the last year and half, we have seen businesses continue to put the safety of their patrons first and I believe they will continue to do so even with this capacity increase.” This update will not prevent municipalities, school districts, restaurants and venues from continuing and implementing stricter mitigation efforts. Based on current CDC guidance, social distancing is strongly recommended for

order requiring Pennsylvanians to wear masks will be lifted when 70 percent of Pennsylvanians age 18 and older are fully vaccinated. “As we continue implementing our reopening plan as quickly as possible, the safety of Pennsylvanians remains at the forefront of our decision making,” said Gov. Wolf. “During the pandemic, all Pennsylvanians have worked collaboratively to stop the spread of COVID-19. We must continue that same mindset during our reopening efforts. I urge each eligible Pennsylvanians to get vaccinated to help protect your neighbors and loved ones as we work to safely reopen our beloved commonwealth communities.” Currently, maximum occupancy is 25 percent for indoor events and gatherings and 50 percent for outdoor events and gatherings, regardless of venue size and only if attendees and workers are able to comply with the 6-foot physical distancing requirement. All Pennsylvanians ages 16 and older are eligible to schedule a COVID-19 vaccine. To find a vaccine provider, visit vaccines.gov. Pennsylvanians with questions about the vaccination process can call the Department of Health’s hotline at 1-877-724-3258.

Pennsylvania State Police Troop M Announce ‘Click It Or Ticket’ Campaign Submitted by PSP TROOP M
The Pennsylvania State Police Troop M have announced the official “Click It or Ticket” campaign which commenced on Monday, May 17 and concludes on Sunday, June 6. Vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death, with most of those fatalities being attributed to unbelted motorists. Currently, the Commonwealth’s seat belt usage rate is 88.9 percent. Throughout the campaign, Troopers will be specifically concentrating on motorists who operate a motor vehicle while unbuckled and do not have a proper child restraint system for children who are passengers within the vehicle. Troopers and local officers throughout Northampton, Lehigh and Bucks County will be participating in a Joint Nighttime Seatbelt Enforcement detail on Thursday night, May 27, with the goal to reduce the number of unbelted crashes and fatalities during the nighttime hours and increase Pennsylvania’s seat belt usage rate. Motorists are reminded of Pennsylvania’s “Move Over Law,” which requires motorists approaching
an emergency response area and are unable to safely merge into a lane further away from the response area to “pass the emergency response area at a speed of no more than 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit and reasonable for safely passing.” Fines for offending motorists range from $500 for the first offense to $2,000 for a third and subsequent offense. For more information on the Pennsylvania State Police, visit www.psp.pa.gov.

And got the shovels and rakes; Now the two of them had a good time, This I can promise you; Jack dug first up in front, And cleaned the hard ditches; Mother, she come behind, And rakes everything nicely even. Everything turned over from end to end, Mother gets the seeds, Nicely organized in little sacks, On each is its name; Jack lays the seeds in [the ground], Mother treats him with patience; I believe such a good boy like him, God will reward one day.
Mother’s Garden
The ground was cool and the weather warm, And soon sprouts came up; All around here, I don’t know how, The weeds forced themselves up; A thousand little plants; Mother didn’t like them more Than a bed full of bedbugs.
It’s a nice springtime day, Everything is showing new life, Jack sings his favorite song, He just can’t hold in in anymore: Tra-ra-ra, raschbum-die-e, Today I’m finally going fishing – I have no desire for salted fish, I will catch a few fish once.
If you want to see mother, You can find her at the weeds, In herd grass and cocks comb, ‘Half-horse’ dock weeds and bindweed, Pig ears, sorrel, Garden orpine and chamomile, Burdocks, ‘boys’ and ‘girls,’ These it had in abundance.
Mother hears his heartfelt desire, Yet she wants to prepare the garden; She says to Jack, “I am sorry, I cannot allow it; Today will not be a fishing day, Today you will go with me to the garden, The soil must be turned over, the time is here, One can’t wait any longer.”
Can you say what grows there? Just look over the list once; The garden always helps out, When you are hungry. Here we find rhubarb, dandelion, Onions and pumpkins, Feed for the cow.
Jack went straight to the shop,
