Spring Routines and Easter Dinner By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town and Country Gazette
We are now officially in the season called spring. Winter’s last gasp appears to be behind us and the ramp-up to spring routines, and Easter dinner, has begun. If you’re like me you have taken your best shot at staying in shape through the winter months – and let me note that I am not a daily workout person by a long shot, but pre-winter I was riding the bike more often and taking one, if not two long walks five days a week. Winter definitely impacted that activity, but now I’m already getting my routine back up and running. In this issue we’re going to take a good look at getting back into the fitness routine at whatever level applies to you personally. Our article “Getting Fit for Spring” offers 10 tips on how to get yourself back on track to capture the health benefits that fitness provides. Somewhat related to that we also look at healthy

Another spring routine is the beauty routine required to freshen and rejuvenate your skin after a winter of dry heat inside and cold wind outside that can really take its toll. In “Tips for Your Spring Skin-Care Routine” you will find good advice and expert suggestions on how to get the job done. Shedding Those Winter Pounds SOURCE: nbcnews.com (edited)
It’s pretty common to let healthy habits go on winter break, but come spring, you may notice your clothes are a bit tighter or you lack the energy for new, warm-weather adventures. Spring is an excellent time to put healthier habits in place. If your healthy habits need some dusting off, here are five ways to get healthier and drop that winter weight. Find your motivation Connect with your personal reasons for taking off extra winter pounds and you will find your motivation to stay the course. Maybe you want to be able to move around with more ease, or take charge of your health without medications. There’s no right or wrong answer and your answer may change over time. Think about your drinks As the weather warms up, heavy winter drinks like hot chocolate fall off the menu, but the arrival of sugary soft drinks, frozen coffee drinks and

more can put a lot of added sugar in your diet. Water is the way to go. It’s the best replacement for sugary drinks. Spring is also the ideal time to bring on the water infusions using fresh fruits like strawberries, kiwi, lemon, lime and pineapple. Though it’s not set in stone, a good number to aim for is 64 ounces of water per day. Aim to have two 16-ounce bottles of water by mid-afternoon and another two before you go to bed. Veg out The truth is, you don’t need to count calories to lose weight if you get a few things right. For starters, eat more whole foods and especially more vegetables, and cut way back on overly processed and sugary foods. A good goal is to aim for a halfplate of veggies at lunch and dinner. If you don’t love veggies, try sprinkling them into foods you already enjoy like smoothies, omelets and soups. Another way to go is to swap out starchy carbs in dishes you already love for vegetables. You could try subbing zucchini noodles for spaghetti (in part or in full), or serving a saucy dish (like a stir-fry) over riced broccoli or cauliflower. Continued on page 8

Develop a snack-smart strategy If you feel the need to snack an hour or two after a meal, it’s possible your meals are too light. Most people just need one or two snacks a day. Try to time them to when you have the longest stretch between meals. Develop a snack-smart strategy. Snack when the next meal is still a while away and you need some

An intermittent fasting tip Intermittent fasting helps align your eating schedule to when your body’s hormones and metabolism are optimized to process food. The structure of restricting eating to certain time windows also offsets auto-pilot snacking, so common after dinner. Put a hard-stop on eating within two to three hours of bedtime. Not only will this help to curb late-night snacking, but it also helps make sure you’re eating when you have time to use the “energy” the food supplies.

conditions to start exercising again, you may never start. Take the first step by doing something active today. Think less, move more, and try it again tomorrow. You will be surprised by the payoff of small daily efforts.
2. Do what you can. Instead of overwhelming yourself, just try to get some exercise somewhere in each 24-hour period. Try for a full hour, or break it up into four 15-minute increments throughout the day. Continued on page 12

3. Be accountable. Nothing can erode your self-image faster than making promises to yourself that you do not keep. Keep every promise you make to yourself and your confidence will get a giant boost. If you need help, find a friend to partner up with as you both improve your health together. 4. Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. We all know we should have about eight, 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Proper hydration keeps your body working efficiently, keeps you full longer, improves your skin, and more! 5. Try to ditch the excuses. With fitness, fill your life with the exercises you can do and walk away from tired excuses. 6. Plan meals. Don’t waste time wondering what you should eat or how you can eat healthier, just select a healthy recipe and try it out! 7. Get sufficient sleep. Sleep is as equally important to your health as food and exercise. That’s because insufficient sleep can affect your hormone levels in ways that can
cause you to overeat and crave more food. Aim for eight hours of shut-eye each night. 8. Plan your exercise for tomorrow, today. If exercise is automatically on your schedule, you will be more likely to do it. Don’t hope to exercise, plan. Scheduling is the secret. 9. Celebrate your success. Get out your calendar and write down your wins. Jot down the workouts you do, the pushups completed, and so forth. Put your success on paper, in ink, so you can see it. It will make you crave more of it, especially when you begin to see your month full of completed workouts. 10. Sweat. Find an exercise you love and then do it until you SWEAT. You have to get that heart rate up and burn those calories. If walking is your favorite, do it at a fast pace, use your arms and power up some hills. Go for a sweat. Start with Proper Warm-Up Engaging in a proper warm-up before exercising is important for your muscles. By letting your muscles literally warm up, your movements will be fuller and more fluid. Tips for Your Spring Skin-Care Routine SOURCE: Various
As winter departs and spring arrives, the transition always feels like a big reset. There’s spring cleaning, adjusting your clothes to the weather of the new season, and the sense of a
general resetting of life – especially this year. Another important “spring cleaning” is looking at your skin-care routine. Now is the time to figure out what may need some tweaking as the days get warmer, sunnier and longer. Here are a few things to consider in your skin-care routine to keep your skin happy, healthy and glowing. General Suggestions In general, experts recommend lightening up your skincare products as you move from winter to spring. As both temperatures and humidity rise, there’s less of a need for thick creams and protective balms.
In terms of an exfoliant, use a gentle one to help clean out your pores and keep your skin fresh this spring. You might also consider a tinted moisturizer or tinted SPF instead of a cream foundation. Always make sure you are using an SPF of at least 30 and try to use a sunscreen every day, 365 days a year. That’s even more important to do as you start spending more of your time outdoors. Don’t Be a Flake / Winter often means dry, rough or dull skin. As we head into spring, moisturizers and face treatments will be most effective when applied to fresh, flake-free skin. Try a gentle scrub up to three times a week to help smooth out your skin, but be sure and avoid scrubs with shells or kernels as the exfoliant as they can literally scratch your skin, causing irritation. Go Lighter / While your skin couldn’t get enough Continued on page 20

moisturizing hydration in the winter months, with the arrival of spring it might be time to find something lighter. There are many options when it comes to moisturizers, so how do you choose? If you prefer something without fragrances, that narrows it down. Gel moisturizers are perfect for oily or combination skin. a sunscreen you love and then layer it over your favorite moisturizer – don’t forget your neck. You can also choose to double up the protection with makeup containing SPF. A good mineral powder foundation is a good choice there. Pucker Up / A new lipstick always helps to brighten the face – and your mood. But today’s popular matte formulas draw attention to every dry spot and crack. Start treating your lips now and in a few weeks they will be ready to go. To get started, gently scrub your lips with an old toothbrush before going to bed and apply a thin layer of your favorite lip balm. Once your lips get nice and smooth, throw on that pop of color and let the compliments roll in. Use these suggestions as your guide and your skin will be smooth and beautiful for spring.

Dressing for Easter Then and Now SOURCE: Various
Easter Sunday is a day of pastels, lace and ruffles with many people wearing their very best outfits. Many parents often have their children all dressed up as well. That’s what we see today, but there is an interesting and ancient history behind the reasons people dress up at Easter. It is a tradition that dates all the way back to the fourth century. In the same way as the centuries-old practice of Christians wearing new white clothes after baptisms to symbolize spiritual rebirth, Easter traditions of dress are based on something similar. On Easter Sunday, Christians in medieval times began wearing new, clean clothes to symbolize the resurrection of Jesus and the new life for followers of the religion. In 300 A.D. Roman emperor Constantine even declared his court would be required to wear their nicest new clothing on Easter Sunday.

The early tradition came with the belief that if you were in a position to do so and bought new clothes for Easter, you would continue to be blessed with good fortune in the coming year. On the flip side, those who could afford to buy new clothes, but chose not to would experience a year of bad luck. From Europe to America When European settlers came to America, they brought the tradition with them. In the 1800s, upper-class citizens of New York City would wear their finest dresses and accessories to the large churches along Fifth Avenue on Easter Sunday. After the services ended a parade took place down the avenue. Since the mid-1800s, the New York Easter Parade has grown into a full-blown annual celebration

Yorkers would stroll down the street, dine at hotels nearby or pay social calls. The Easter Sunday “stroll” or parade became a time for the wealthy to show off the latest trends in fashion. Dressmakers and milliners would line the streets and make sketches of the outfits worn by the wealthy to be copied by department stores within just weeks of the Easter holiday. Hats of the day were extravagantly decorated with fake flowers, tall ostrich feathers and even taxidermy birds. These decorated hats were considered the height of fashion. These days the big skirts of the old days have been cast aside, but even today the excessive hats remain in style.

Remember When
photos by William “Becky” Beck
This photograph of eight young women appears to show them about to board "The Berksy '' at the "Tripoli '' station in New Tripoli to ride to Slatington High School. "The Berksy '' consisted of two passenger cars and one baggage/ mail car. Originally belonging to The Berks County RR established in 1871, it was ultimately part of The Schuylkill and Lehigh RR, a branch of the Reading. Twice a day, it made a 42-mile round trip stopping at a dozen towns in Berks County and at Wanamakers, Jacksonville, Lynnport, Tripoli, Lochland, Germansville, Best (Station), and Emerald in Lehigh County, before arriving in Slatington about 2 hours later.
For most Lehigh County teens, this was the only way to continue their education past the eighthgrade education of a one room schoolhouse. But it did come with a cost of $6.34 from Tripoli station, which unfortunately left out those whose families could not afford that cost.. So, from sometime in 1919 until school buses began transportation service in 1946-47, "The Berksy" made a secondary education possible for hundreds of rural students. The final run of "The Berksy" was on April 9th, 1949. Thank you to William Mantz for the wonderful history of the Berksy.

The rabbit, so one always says. He takes so many along, as he can In a pot hanging from his neck. He cooks and colors them in it, With alder catkins or onion peels.
Their way is often times long and roundabout, Still, they do their best. They often find the boys first, Then the girls get the most.
How one still pities the rabbits In the cold winter snow; They sit somewhere in a hole Or on the stone row, And sleep with the eyes open, Until something comes, then they take off.
Just as soon as we saw An egg in everyone’s nest, Someone said, “I bet, I have The largest, the nicest, the best.” The we soon picked, picked, Until everyone ended up with a broken egg. [Nothing like sibling rivalry!]
When a hunter shoots the rabbits in winter The children are often angry; They pity them, they are not pleased With such people on the hunt; The rabbits lay an egg for everyone In a nest made of straw and hay.
For many years the rabbits just Brought everyone just one egg; Now one gets many, that is a joy They are all hard-boiled. Some are also pretty and sweet as sugar, Also, chocolate rabbits with four feet.
Just as soon as it gives Easter yet, Then spring is also here; That means that everything comes to life Becomes green, no longer gray. Then the rabbits grow their best, And whoever shoot them, he will be arrested.
Some lie nicely in the nest And are well decorated; And others sit on their legs And have their ears standing up. Such good rabbits were rare, When I was a young fellow.
When mist ‘smokes’ there along the mountain, Then one knows what that means; They are cooking their eggs there, Then a person thinks, one would come; And when it’s not yet Easter time One makes himself ready, yes, certainly.
No wonder the children are afraid, That a dog would catch their rabbit; No wonder that the time drags on And they don’t know why. A sugar-sweet rabbit with chocolate hair – A child lives on from year to year for them.
And when the day before Easter comes Much preparation and work are done; The rabbits are all drummed out, And ready for the night; They have all the eggs in a sack, And each one has a large pack.
And whoever unduly angers a dear child, It could go bad for him, So said the Savior, his Word binds, That we can understand. The rabbit also thought of us, And did that with what he gifted to us.

For with Easter we also learned What everyone should know We are all reminded of What Christ has done. Dead and buried in the earth, He came out by the guards. A large stone was on his grave; An angel rolled it away, Soldiers, with weapons and staffs, Slept without covers. So unexpectedly, like an Easter rabbit, He came out before their noses. For that reason, the Easters are all joy They are so full of hope; Those who have much, it goes first-rate If one gives what one should. For whoever gives nothing, when he has much, That one robs himself and also his God. Hallicher Oschderdaag! Ess net zu viel Zuckerschleck. Happy Easter! Don’t eat too much candy!
