As people age, physical fitness is very important, but so too is mental fitness. One of the things that often starts to slip a little as we age is memory. Forgetting a little something here and there is not the end of the world, but even so, you might be interested in knowing that there are ways to help keep your memory sharper. If you remember to (that was a joke), take the time to read “7 Tips to
Improve Your Memory” to see which tips could be of value to you. And lastly, do you like a morning shower or an evening shower? That’s more of a personal choice than a scientific one however, how you shower does have some scientific thinking behind it in terms of what brings the most benefit to your skin. The Health Risks of Summer Heat SOURCE: lvhn.org (edited)
So here’s the situation. We’re having some really hot weather in our region this summer. As our temperatures go high and then stay high even at night, we each face the risks associated with heat up to and including heat exhaustion and even heat stroke. This pertains to people of all ages. Although seniors and young children are particularly vulnerable, you can be a robust and fit 25-year-old and still suffer greatly from the heat. No matter your age, knowing the signs and symptoms of heat illness, as well as some simple rules to follow when you are outdoors in the heat this summer can literally save your life. The potential to be that serious is real. Here are some things, courtesy of the Lehigh Valley Health Network you should keep in mind whenever the temperature soars. Rule #1: Stay cool When the summer temperature is very high, keep yourself and your family safe from summer
heat exhaustion and heat stroke with these safety tips: • Dress appropriately – Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. • Stay cool inside – Try to stay in an air conditioned environment as much as possible. If you don’t have air conditioning at home, visit a mall or another public place that does. • Limit time outdoors – Go outdoors when it’s the coolest, which is often morning and evening. • Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of water. If you are thirsty, you may already be dehydrated. • Wear plenty of sunscreen – Sunburn affects your body’s ability to cool down and can lead to dehydration. Continued on page 6

time in extreme heat – fever, fast pulse, vomiting or confusion – it may indicate heat stroke. Again, heat stroke is considered a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately and move to a cool place until emergency help arrives. Staying Hydrated When you are outdoors in the heat of summer, it is extremely important to stay hydrated, because dehydration can lead to heat related illnesses from mild to severe. Dehydration can cause dry mouth, lips and eyes, dizziness, headache, fatigue and more. Here are tips for staying hydrated this summer: • Drink water – In many cases just drinking water is good enough. For high-level athletes who engage in vigorous activity sports drinks may also be appropriate. • Try to drink every 20 minutes – There’s no specific amount of water you should drink daily; however, if you are engaging in moderate activity, try to drink 1 cup every 20 minutes. • Avoid alcohol and caffeine – Alcohol and caffeine can actually leave you dehydrated. • Try water-rich foods – If you find it difficult to drink enough, try to eat water-rich foods like watermelon and cucumber.

How to Add Healthy Years to Your Life SOURCE: washingtonpost.com (edited)
According to The Washington Post, recent research points to diet, exercise and mental outlook as key mechanisms to slow down aging and age-related diseases. What is clear is that certain lifestyle choices help individuals live longer than they otherwise would. Harvard researchers found that healthy habits add nearly 15 years of life expectancy. Unfortunately, not enough Americans can access healthy lifestyles and we’re getting sick and dying earlier, across all economic levels, compared with other countries. Interestingly, many scientists believe that a certain amount and type of stress can help with longevity, thanks to evolution. “Our genes didn’t evolve for a life of pampered comfort,” says one expert, adding, “some causes of stress, such as those related to diet and exercise seem to activate genes that slow down cell growth and aging.” Using Food Stress Stress that’s good for longevity can be caused

by nutrition. Ideally, our ancestors enjoyed proteinrich red meat for peak energy and performance. But when hunting expeditions failed, people resorted to eating hardy plants. Today, our bodies still infer a state of scarcity if we consume lots of vegetables, switching on the longevity genes. Another signal of scarcity that seems to switch on longevity genes is the restriction of all foods, which has been shown by decades of animal studies to lengthen life span. Very low-calorie five-day eating plans that trick the body into thinking it’s fasting, while allowing some foods and nutrients, have been shown to be effective and safer than water-only fasting. Essentially, the best approach is dietary restriction without malnutrition. Exercising in Moderation Exercise can further simulate our ancestors’ Continued on page 11

stressful environments, according to some experts, which can signal your genes to extend your span of health. Just don’t do too much. If you want to really maximize your exercise level, consult a doctor first to see what the best options are for you personally. High-intensity interval training, otherwise known as HIIT, may be particularly effective in adding to longevity. Strength training may also partially reverse aspects of aging. As with fasting, just don’t go overboard. Being very aerobically fit may reduce mortality risk, but research suggests there is a “Goldilocks” threshold and exercising more than 10 hours per week has been linked to shorter life spans. Previous research has also shown an association between extreme exercise and health problems, such as premature aging of the heart. A balance of exercise options could include: • High-intensity interval training three days per week • Two nonconsecutive days of strength training, focusing on core muscles, as well as arms and legs,
with three sets for each muscle group • Taking walks of 7,000 to 10,000 steps on the other two days • Getting at least three minutes of movement after every hour of sitting. But keep in mind that these diet and exercise regimens can’t magically undo a lifetime of mistakes. Two More Things Beyond diet and exercise, it has been found that long-term, loving relationships also drive longevity. In a nearly 80-year study, researchers found that the most important factor in a long, healthy life was having a close partner. Another protective factor is optimism. Optimism was associated with exceptional longevity. The good news here is that optimism can be cultivated.

Showering and Your Skin SOURCE: washingtonpost.com (edited)
Are you a morning shower person or a nighttime shower person? A morning shower can shock you right out of your sleepiness and really wake you up. Then when you get to work you are ready to go without 30 minutes of drinking coffee after coffee. Some people like nighttime showers because they can clean off the stickiness and grime of the day making them feel cleaner when they go to bed. A nighttime shower can also calm you almost to a preliminary state of sleep. Choosing the Right Time The “right” time to shower is an age-old debate. Although sleep experts say there is some evidence that a nightly rinse at the right temperature could help if you’re struggling to fall asleep and a morning shower may be beneficial for waking you up, dermatologists say skin health and hygiene depend much more on how, rather than when, you take your shower. Showering and your Skin Continued from page 13
According to one expert, when you shower is not a scientific decision, it’s a personal one. On the other hand, what you use in the shower and what you do right after the shower does affect your skin. Here are the factors that do matter when you shower. Temperature and Shower Length There are few things more soothing than a long, hot shower. But for some people, especially those who have drier skin or skin conditions such as eczema, prolonged exposure to hot water can often do more harm than good. Dermatologists recommend shorter showers of no more than 10 minutes, using warm or roomtemperature water – or even cold water – which is less drying to skin. Water temperature and timing are also important factors to consider if you take your showers at night, hoping it will help you sleep. For best results, one dermatologist recommends taking a warm shower between one and two hours before going to bed. This helps the body’s natural tendency to cool down as it approaches bedtime. Less is more For skin health and hygiene, when and how often you shower should depend on your skin type and activity levels. If you have drier skin or aren’t doing many activities that result in sweating or exposures to dirt, other irritants or germs, you could shower less frequently. “Less is more” can also apply to hair-washing, which can be more variable. If your hair is brittle, has a coarser texture or you notice split ends, that AUGUST 4, 2022 || townandcountrygazette.com
may be a sign that you’re washing it too frequently and stripping away the natural moisture. When washing your hair, focus shampoo on your scalp so it feels as if you’re giving yourself a scalp massage. Dermatologists also caution against scrubbing too vigorously in the shower. Consider soaping yourself with only your hands, and if you want to use an applicator, try a soft shower pouf or cotton washcloth. Traditional loofahs could be too abrasive while gritty washes or scrubs can also increase dryness and problems with the skin. Shower Aftercare Once you get out of the shower, don’t do the classic “towel shimmy” and rub your skin. Pat yourself dry and focus on moisturizing. One expert suggests moisturizing immediately post-shower in the bathroom, because the skin is still damp and you can capitalize on the “ambient humidity.” Although there are many types of moisturizers, a fragrance-free moisturizing cream can lock in more moisture than lighter-weight lotions that have higher water content.

The advice is to take care of your feet throughout your life. 1. Don’t wear too-tight shoes. 2. Don’t share shoes. 3. Don’t share pedicure utensils with your pals. 4. Don’t hide discolored nails with polish. Let them breathe and treat the underlying issue. 5. Give yourself a foot massage. Not only will it soothe your tired foot muscles, it will increase blood circulation in your feet. Shoe Sizing and Foot Hygiene If you have one foot that is larger than the other – many people do – remember to fit your shoes to your larger foot. The correct sizing of your shoes should come first when buying. Don’t plan to rely on the shoes to stretch or the idea of “breaking them in” around the house. Bad or poorly sized shoes will cause you to develop corns, calluses, blisters, ingrown toenails and other sources of foot

discomfort. Pro Tip: To prevent ingrown toenails, cut nails straight across. Do not round the edges. If you have a painful ingrown nail, don’t perform “DIY surgery” on it. Leave that to a professional. If you’re wondering about wearing socks to bed, either for hygiene or general foot health, the answer is: Yes, it’s OK to wear socks to bed. Doing so is not a problem unless they are overly tight and constricting. Dealing with Blisters If you’re a runner, a gym rat, or you buy a lot of new shoes, you’re probably no stranger to the blister. “Large blisters may be popped if done with a clean instrument,” according to one expert, “however, they should never be ‘unroofed.’ Following the puncture, apply a topical antiseptic and cover with a bandage to protect.” And finally: How to get rid of foot odor? Bathing daily and taking the time to dry the skin between your toes afterwards will help prevent odor, as well as bacterial and fungal infections like athlete’s foot. Pro Tip: If you do end up with the dreaded itch, try a Listerine soak.

It was the mind-set of the chiseler, Who kept the crossroads store, To always be very greedy – This is, by golly, true. So, Mrs. Smith get sugar now As much as she needs for nothing, And the chiseler, that greedy thing, Is out of a terrible fix.
And no one could find it And could not get another one; So, then I took your pound of sugar To weigh the budder,

7 Tips to Improve Your Memory SOURCE: mayoclinic.org
Can't find your car keys? Forget your grocery list? You're not alone. Everyone forgets things occasionally. Still, memory loss is not something to take lightly. Although there are no guarantees when it comes to preventing memory loss or dementia, certain activities might help. Here are seven simple ways to sharpen your memory – and know when to seek help for memory loss. 1. Include daily physical activity / Physical activity increases blood flow to your whole body, including your brain. This might help keep your memory sharp. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity, such as jogging – preferably spread throughout the week. If you don't have time for a full workout, squeeze in a few 10-minute walks throughout the day. 2. Stay mentally active / Just as physical activity helps keep your body in shape, mentally stimulating activities help keep your brain in shape – and might keep memory loss at bay. Do crossword puzzles. Play bridge. Take alternate routes when driving. Learn to play a musical instrument. Volunteer at a local school or community organization. 3. Socialize regularly / Social interaction helps ward off depression and stress, both of which can contribute to memory loss. Look for opportunities to get together with loved ones, friends and others – especially if you live alone.
4. Get organized / You're more likely to forget things if your home is cluttered and your notes are in disarray. Jot down tasks, appointments and other events in a special notebook, calendar or electronic planner. You might even repeat each entry out loud as you jot it down to help cement it in your memory. Also, set aside a place for your wallet, keys, glasses and other essentials. Limit distractions and don't do too many things at once. If you focus on the information that you're trying to retain, you're more likely to recall it later. It might also help to connect what you're trying to retain to a favorite song or another familiar concept. 5. Sleep well / Sleep plays an important role in helping you consolidate your memories so you can recall them down the road. Make getting enough sleep a priority. Most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep a day. 6. Eat a healthy diet / A healthy diet might be as good for your brain as it is for your heart. Eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Choose lowfat protein sources, such as fish, beans and skinless poultry. Avoid too much alcohol it can lead to confusion and memory loss. 7. Manage chronic conditions / Follow your doctor's treatment recommendations for medical conditions, such as depression, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity and hearing loss. The better you take care of yourself, the better your memory is likely to be. In addition, review your medications with your doctor regularly. Some medications can affect memory. Seeking help for memory loss / If you're worried about memory loss – especially if memory loss affects your ability to complete your usual daily activities or you notice your memory getting worse – talk to your doctor. He or she will likely do a physical exam, as well as check your memory and problem-solving skills.

Busy Summer For Lehigh Township Rails To Trails In late June, LTRT hosted “Celebrating Indian Trail Park”, to showcase the work we’ve done on the path in the woods. Children looked for pipe cleaner insects and received a prize for finding five of them. Nate Pritchard, a county conservationist, showed people small organisms that live in the creek. We sold raffle tickets and perennials. Many visitors toured the Historical Centre. Members of the Bertsch-HokendaquaCatasauqua Watershed Association participated,
as did members of the Indian Garden Club. Thank you to everyone who helped out and all who attended. In early July, another one of our members was honored as an Outstanding Senior of Northampton County. Nancy Thatcher, our president, was recognized for her leadership of LTRT and for her work in many other organizations including the D & L, the Nature Center, Holiday Hope Chests, and Boutique at the Rink.

Recently LTRT participated in the Food Truck Festival sponsored by the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority at Victory Park in Slatington, at which we sold T-shirts and raffle tickets. The first week in August we informed visitors about our work in the woods during National Night Out, which took place at Indian Trail Park. The raffle tickets that we are selling are for one of 12 prizes. These include gift cards to area stores, $50 cash and gift baskets from area businesses. Tickets will be sold at Redners and Thom-son’s Meat Market in the late summer. Final sales will occur at the Walnutport Canal Festival in midOctober. The drawing will be held then, too.

St. Peter’s UMC Events Submitted by Sharleen Crossett
Well as most people know things can change in minute. That’s what happened to me, several days after I sent in the last article schedules changed. The VBS for kids had to be cancelled for this year and the Bible Study analyzing the movie Lion King was rescheduled to Mondays and started on the 1st. I am sorry if this caused you and inconvenience. Wow it’s August and Food Truck Thursday is still in operation, at 10am you are welcome to get food. Remember to bring along your own bags and boxes, as the items are not packaged. Always keep watch on the church Facebook page for cancellations, postponements etc. The line begins at the Northern Lehigh Food Bank. On Sunday we start the week with The Bible study/Sunday school hour at 9am, this is followed by the regular service at 10am. Communion is celebrated the 1st Sunday of the month with the use of pre-packaged elements. Both Monday morning and Monday evening Bible Study’s will start up again in September. “Grief Share” is taking the rest of the summer
