It is indeed cold outside and that’s because we are very close to officially entering the winter season. In this issue, everything we look at will relate to winter on some level, from the holidays ahead to snow shoveling, and more.

For instance, sometimes during the holidays a short-notice guest will appear. Maybe they’re former neighbors back in town for just a few days and you want to have them over. Even if it’s a

quick visit without a meal, you probably still want to serve them something. In “Create a Short-Notice Appetizer or Side Dish” we give you a couple of food ideas that might be perfect for welcoming that short-notice guest to your home without having to prepare a full meal.

Whether we have snow, sleet or ice, winter weather can always create dangerous road conditions. The result is a need for extra care and attention when you’re out there driving. In “Winter Driving Safety Tips” we look at the basics of good winter driving to help you maintain safe control of your vehicle, as well as a short, pre-winter maintenance checklist for your car. But more than

that, we also give you a key bit of information on how to keep your littlest passengers fully protected in their car safety seats while wearing all their extra coats and layers.

In the upcoming holiday season it is very possible that invitations to social gatherings are going to increase. In “Inexpensive Host and Hostess Gifts” we give you a dozen ideas to consider as thankyou gifts to hand off as you come through the door. The gift ideas range from handmade soap to macaroons.

Now during the course of this coming winter, it can be expected that snow and ice will show up

more than once. And when they do, shovels and ice chippers will come out. We turned to the Mayo Clinic Health System to bring you some important safety tips we should all be aware of when it comes to snow shoveling and navigating icy surfaces. See “Safety Tips: Snow Shoveling and Icy Sidewalks” for all the details.

And finally, in “Have Some Old-Fashioned Winter Fun” we look at some of the outdoor winter activities you can take full advantage of in our greater region all winter long; activities like skiing, ice skating, snow tubing and much more.

So get ready for winter because here it comes! And join us next issue when we celebrate Christmas.

Snow Shoveling and Icy Sidewalks

SOURCE: mayoclinic.org (edited)

Shoveling snow can mean taking on more than your body can handle. And ignoring signs that you need to take a break from shoveling may prove to be harmful. Similarly, icy sidewalks and frozen snow present significant “slip and fall” hazards.

Here are safety tips for snow shoveling and walking on icy sidewalks from the Mayo Clinic Health System. To start, snow shoveling:

• Be heart conscious. / If you have a history of heart problems and are currently inactive, it’s best to speak with your health care provider before shoveling. Additionally, don’t shovel while smoking, eating or after consuming caffeine; this may place extra stress on your heart.

• Dress Warm. / Wear several layers of clothing. You can always remove a layer if needed.

• Drink plenty of water. / Remaining hydrated

during cold-weather months is just as important as during warm-weather months.

• Warm up your arms and legs. / Stretch your arms and legs before beginning to shovel. You are less likely to injure muscles when they are warm.

• Take it slow. / Pace yourself and take breaks if you need to. Safety is more important than speed.

• Protect your back. / Bend at the knees, not the back. Lift with your legs bent, stand with your feet hip-width apart for balance and keep the shovel close to your body. Also, don’t pick up too much snow at once; use a small shovel or fill up a large shovel no more than half way.

Hitting the Ice

If you’re an ice skater, there are a number of skating rink opportunities in our region, and most likely as we get further into the season, frozen lakes and ponds. The key safety item for skating on a lake or pond is to confirm the thickness of the ice. If you are skating solo it should be at least four inches thick. If you’re skating in a group, be sure the ice is at least seven inches thick.

Skating back on solid ground, you might want to head down to Easton’s Winter Village every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through December 18, because this year’s Village is featuring an oversized, synthetic ice skating rink a half-block long right off Center Square. The newly unveiled and reimagined Center Square itself will feature more than 20 merchant huts offering the wares of Easton’s downtown merchants in a festive winter celebration.

Snow Tubing and Snowshoeing

Freezing temps? Tons of snow? Icy roads? Pennsylvanians are experts when it comes to dealing with whatever winter throws our way. And we certainly don’t let the plunging

temperatures and snowfall get in the way when we want to go outdoors and make winter memories. In fact, without the snow, we couldn’t experience the thrills of zooming down a mountain on an epic snow-tubing run somewhere in PA.

Another more relaxing option is snowshoeing. In addition to ice skating, snowmobiling and crosscountry skiing, state parks like Promised Land State Park in the Poconos offer tremendous opportunity to slip on a pair of snowshoes and follow the trails into the woods. At Promised Land,

Other Options

Pennsylvania is pretty much an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise all year round. However, the winter landscape, especially after a fresh snowfall, promises an extra bit of excitement,

magic, and a ton of fun. Here are some other outdoor winter fun activities in Pennsylvania you’ll want to consider adding to your winter bucket list: Ride a toboggan; lead your own team of stunningly beautiful huskies on a Sled Tour; or visit The Wolf Sanctuary situated on 80 acres near Lititz. It’s all doable here in our greater region of PA, so this winter take that snow day (or two!) and make winter adventure memories that will last a lifetime.

Create a Short-Notice Appetizer or Side Dish

Sometimes during the holidays a short-notice guest will appear. Maybe they’re former neighbors back in town for just a few days and you want to have them over. Even if it’s a quick visit without a meal, you probably want to serve them something.

Here is an easy to prepare, short-notice appetizer you can consider, as well as a short-notice winter side dish that is quick to prepare and could easily be satisfying without being part of a full meal. Both can be made quite quickly.

Homemade Pizza Roll

This is something you can easily make in advance and freeze, or throw together and throw into the oven on very short notice. Start with store-bought pizza dough that you can keep in the refrigerator.

Before the guests arrive, roll out the dough and add your favorite toppings. Then use your hands to roll the dough into a pizza log. Next cut the log into segments of whatever length you wish. Put the segments on a cookie sheet and toss in the

pre-heated oven for 10-12 minutes at 425 degrees and you will be set with a terrific short-notice appetizer.

Sausage Stuffed Acorn Squash

Combining acorn squash with sausage is one of the most delicious ways to serve this winter vegetable. Try this easy-to-make and flavorful recipe and it will quickly become a family favorite, as well as a favorite of guests. It's gluten-free and packed with protein and fiber. This basic recipe will impress you with its simplicity. It's so easy you can definitely make it on short notice.

• First, the acorn squash is baked in the oven.

• While the squash is baking, you prepare the stuffing by cooking the onion, sausage, garlic, spices, and then adding spinach, dried cranberries, and pecans.

• Finally, you stuff each of the roasted acorn squash halves with the sausage mixture you just cooked, and the dish is ready! Very simple, yet beautiful and delicious.

The recipe is very versatile and easily adjustable to what you have available on hand. Many

Inexpensive Host and Hostess

Source: montanahappy.com (edited)

While it’s always nice to bring a host or hostess a bottle of wine or a meal in a basket – think pasta, sauce and garlic bread – there are other inexpensive thank-you gifts you can consider that will be wellreceived. Whether you’re thanking your host or hostess for having you over for a party or for letting you stay a few nights, you want to get them a gift they will both use and love. Here are some ideas:

1. Maple Syrup

A bottle of premium maple syrup is a perfect gift for your host or hostess because it’s not just used on pancakes. Maple syrup can be used all the time in cooking. Note there are different grades of maple syrup and the darker the color, the more robust the flavor.

2. Beeswax Candles

For a candle lover, candles are something they can never get enough of. Show your gratitude with beeswax candles that are beautiful for the holidays.

3. Smoked Salt

Your host or hostess may not be familiar with smoked salt, but it is something that will make their taste buds dance. The flavor of the salt

4. Handmade Soap

There are many different types of handmade soap, so have fun looking for the right one to give. Even more fun, take a soap-making class and make your own to give – and keep!

5. Cookie Cutters

Cookie cutters come in traditional and unusual shapes and are a simple way to say thank you. Copper cookie cutters are a great choice because they won’t rust, and everyone loves them.

6. Balsamic Vinegar

A nice bottle of balsamic vinegar will last longer

than a bottle of wine. It is also well worth the price, because the taste of good-quality balsamic vinegar makes everything taste just a little bit better.

7. Mini Herb Garden

For the host or hostess who loves cooking, fresh herbs in “window sill” ready pots are a great gift idea.

8.

Appetizer Lover

If your host loves to entertain with lots of appetizers, they can probably use a cookbook that specializes in appetizers. Add a beautiful or unique serving tray to complete the gift.

10. Jams and Jellies

Mornings wouldn’t be the same without homemade preserves to slather on an English muffin or piece of toast. They also make the perfect gift, especially if you get unusual flavors that your friend will love.

11. Cedar Plank

Get your host cedar planks for his grill and he’ll be cooking up restaurant-quality recipes in no time. Cedar planks are both unique and practical and give meat a nice smoky flavor.

12. Monogram

Something personal is always a good bet when you’re looking for a gift for someone special. Monogramming a towel, a picture frame, a cozy throw, and luggage tags are just some of the ideas that could make a great present.

Winter Driving Safety Tips

SOURCE: nhtsa.gov (edited)

Whether it is snow, sleet or ice, winter weather can cause extremely dangerous road conditions. Hundreds of fatal crashes and thousands of injury crashes occur each winter. Preparing yourself – and your vehicle – for winter weather is key. Here are some tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Basics Slow down. It’s harder to control or stop your vehicle on a slick or snow-covered surface. In fact, during wintry conditions in 2020, there were an estimated 119,000 police-reported crashes nationwide. To give yourself a better chance of avoiding a wintry crash, increase your following distance so you have plenty of time to stop for vehicles ahead of you.

You are also likely to encounter snow plows on the road. Don’t crowd them. Snow plows travel slowly, make wide turns, stop often, overlap lanes, and exit the road frequently. If you are behind a snow plow, keep a safe driving distance and use caution if you plan to pass.

What to Do in an Emergency

If you are stopped or stalled in wintry weather, stay focused on yourself, your passengers, your car and your surroundings. Stay with your car and make sure it is seen. Put bright markers on the antenna or windows and keep the interior dome light on. Be mindful of carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure your exhaust pipe stays clear of any snow. Only run your car occasionally and just long enough to keep it warm inside.

Tires

As the outside temperature drops, so does tire

the tire itself. That number is the maximum pressure the tire can hold, but not necessarily the recommended pressure for your specific vehicle.

Car Seats

In colder weather, parents typically dress their children in winter coats. But heavy coats can interfere with the proper harness fit on a child in a car seat. When your child will be secured in a car seat, pick thin, warm layers, and place blankets or coats around your child as needed after the harness is snug and secure. As always, make sure

blades.

Batteries / Battery power falls when the temperature drops. In cold weather, gasoline and diesel engines take more battery power to start, and electric and hybrid-electric vehicles’ driving range can be reduced. Have a mechanic check your battery, charging system and belts.

Cooling System / Check the cooling system for leaks, test the coolant, and drain or replace the old coolant if necessary. Make sure your coolant meets manufacturer’s specifications. You may also want to visit your mechanic for a tune-up or other needed parts, repairs, and replacements.

TOUCH OF DUTCH

Submitted by Larry Gradwohl

Do sin zwee Gedichde weeich Winder vum Ralph S. Funk. Here are two poems about winter from Ralph S. Funk.

- 20. Nov. 1938

Winter is coming

Winter is coming, it is soon here, With snow and ice and cold [air]; The sky looks like lead, so gray, The frost, it ‘covers’ the world.

The flowers are already done blooming, The leaves are off the trees; The birds with their pretty songs They are already far from home here.

The wind blows around the barn, Yes, it is certainly cold and raw; It blows the corn shocks all crooked And over the grass, now brown.

Soon the snow and perhaps some ice will lay on the fields and in every corner, And cover the sleeping earth so lightly, Like with a ‘feather comforter.’

I don’t like it, the cold winter weather, And also, not the ice and snow; I tell you what occurs to me as best –That is the nice springtime!

Der Winder Iss Do

'S iss schunn Disember – kann's dann sei

Es Yaahr iss so naegscht rum?

Doch waer will datt hie, wann Nadur Wie'n Fedderdeck zudeckt Die schlofend Aerd, wu Friehyaahrs dann Zu Lewe frisch uffweckt.

'S guckt schee datt draus, so sauwer weiss Wu frieher Dreck un Schtaab Hen sich gewisse, un sowohl Es uffgedrickelt Laab.

Des iss en Bild so schee, so frisch, Wu Mann net mole kann; Browiert er graad so hatt er maag, Kummt naegscht yuscht dann un wann.

Ya, Winder iss en scheeni Zeit Un macht gaar ken Verdruss –'S iss vleicht eebissel rau uff daer, Wu in der Kelt sei muss.

Doch hofft mer dass er weilt net lang Un packt uns net zu schwer; 'S kaemt gschpassich vor, wann's gschehne sett Bei uns ken Winder waer. - 24. Disember 1958

Winter is here

It is already December – can it be That the year is almost gone by? There are no leaves on the trees, Not even a flower any more.

The wind comes over the mountains, And it is raw and cold; One can now expect that the snow Instead of rain will shortly fall.

Yes well, I think it’s time for it, And (if) one does not like the snow The only thing to do now –Is to go to Florida.

Yet who would want to go there, when nature Covers, like a feather comforter, The sleeping earth, which spring then Can wake up to fresh life?

It looks beautiful out there, so pure white

[Well, winter is not Ralph Funk’s favorite season (mine, neither), but we do notice when he experiences it, it was not all as bad as was his anticipation of it, as expressed in his first poem. He does find some things positive to say about it when it’s here – the beauty of a snow-covered landscape, for example. Also, perhaps in life, our fear or negative assessment of something coming in the future (that dreaded unknown) can actually teach us something beneficial when we in fact encounter it.]

Meet America Meet AMERICA! She is ready for her forever family!

This beautiful german shepherd loves kids and just want to lay by your feet and relax! She is described as affectionate, social and calm. She has an average temperament and is low energy. America's foster mom reports that "America is very sweet and loving. She is a very calm girl who would love to lay by your feet and sleep with you. This is not a guard dog because she loves everyone, she will play with kids but not so much with adults." Like with every dog we recommend following a two week shutdown to help ensure success in your adoption.

Anyone in need of a coffee break??? Then you’re in luck! Come on over and get a big cup o’ joe with Coffee Bean! ?? This ol’ mush is a Great Pyrenees around 7 years old who was timestamped at a local open intake shelter due to medical needs and lack of space at that shelter. We sprung him in the nick of time - and we are so glad that we did! He is a beautiful boy who is soaking up all that comes with being a loved and spoiled dog. Coffee Bean is a goofball who loves nothing more than to nap on a pile of comfy blankets. He loves to spend time outside and is starting to become a little playful now that he feels more comfortable. He knows sit, down, and even has manners when he ever so gently takes treats right out of our hands! His skin and fur are healing flea dermatitis and he is doing beautifully. He has some arthritis in his hips and will need to be on a comfort medication for this. Apply at lvpeaceablekingdom.info for more information about Coffee Bean and to schedule a time to come meet him! He is not a fan of other dogs, so he will only be placed into a home if he is the only dog.

America has been vet checked, is UTD on shots, dewormed with Drontal, on Heartgard and Flea/Tick Prevention. She is also microchipped.
