From Miss to Mrs.

SOURCE: Various

As you embark on your journey from Miss to Mrs., proper planning for the big day is key. We consulted several wedding sites to bring you a few pro, must-know planning tips for the journey ahead. So after you’ve accepted the proposal catch your breath, celebrate with each other, family and friends and then sit down and start mapping your way to your wedding day. Budgeting Keep your guest list to those who are most important to you. The larger the guest list, the easier it is for additional costs to sneak in – from extra invitations to food and more. Be flexible. If you’re serving alcohol, a full open bar may sound great, but that will be a major area of cost. You might be better off going with a beer and wine bar. When you start looking at dates and venues, don’t be afraid of off-peak months when the rental cost will likely be lower. And don’t hesitate to ask for a discount – you never know! Planning the Day If you think about your wedding from the perspective of a guest and how they will experience it, the choices you make for the day will likely be very memorable. Make the personality of your wedding a FEBRUARY 3, 2022 || townandcountrygazette.com

reflection of you. Skip any tradition that does not reflect you as a couple. Remember that logistically, whatever goes up must come down, and making the littlest details come to life may require their own pair of hands. If you’re not using a wedding planner to keep everything running smoothly, be sure you have very reliable friends to help you on this most important day. Invitations Don't skimp on the quantity – always print a few extra, and certainly do not skimp on the quality. Always check and then double-check before any printed pieces go to press. There’s no joy in having to throw out and then reprint invitations because of spelling errors. If you are planning thank-you notes, they can be printed at the same time as your invitations. This is a great way to save money. Cakes and Alternatives A wedding cake is traditional, but there are alternatives. One very acceptable alternative would be individual cupcakes, which can be arranged to look like a wedding cake. Regardless of what you choose, focus on flavor first. Ultimately, your wedding cake or whatever you select for that important piece of your wedding celebration is one of the first things guests really notice – and it's the last thing they eat. Picking Flowers Choose flowers that are readily available and also work well with the season and the climate. Having a style you want, as opposed to an exact flower, will give you the greatest flexibility when planning your floral décor. If planning an outdoor wedding, choose flowers that won’t wilt in the heat of the day. Also, use flowers in colors that are grown naturally. That will keep your wedding looking timeless when you look back in 10-20 years at all the pictures. Above all else, when the big day arrives, enjoy every moment. 7

e met our senior year of high school in 2014. He was a senior at Parkland high school and I went to Northern Lehigh high school. I was scrolling on twitter one day, and his profile popped up. My bestfriend dared me to message him, and I did. We ended up going on our first date to the Applebee’s on Cedar Crest Blvd. We both went to far separate colleges at the end of that summer. He went to Southern Connecticut University and I went to Bloomsburg University. He also played baseball there, so we had a lot of obstacles ahead of us after only being together for 4 months before. We made the distance work, and through our time in college he ended up transferring closer to me to Mansfield University, and ironically I got an opportunity to go to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore so I transferred and made the distance further away again. The situation wasn’t ideal but we made it through the distance, and have been together for 7 years before tying the knot this past December. We are very family orientated people, and I firmly believe that plays a major role in our relationship, and how we made the distance work. I would often travel with his family to see his games, or we would meet half way at Penn State games to tailgate with his family, which allowed us to not only spend time together, but also make long lasting memories. Zachary is now a special education teacher, baseball coach, and football coach at Northern Lehigh. I work for Lehigh Valley Health Network. We just bought our first home together in the area, and got our first dog whom is a sweet golden retriever named Merlot. The wedding day took place on 12/18/21 at Saucon Valley Country Club, and was a Hallmark Christmas movie fairytale. News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || FEBRUARY 3, 2022

y husband Noah and I met when I joined the marching band at school as part of the color guard. I was in eighth grade and he was an eleventh grade drummer. We were both very interested but couldn't get over the age gap, but we kept our friendship and had other typical high school relationships. We started to get really close during his senior year but he was off to college 1000 miles away, and I still had 3 years left of high school. When he came home from college for summers, I would sneak out of my house to see him (sorry mom). We would check up on each other every now and then with a "Hey are you still alive?" text. Then it was my turn to start college and Noah and I started to become really close again. He ended up graduating early and coming home, and our first time seeing each other was March 16th. We had dinner at Chili's and that night was when the US shutdown began. The two of us lived close to each other so we would always go for walks or for drives around town. Come October, we decided to take a little vacation to Tennessee together. I had it all planned, I even surprised him with a helicopter ride. Little did I know right after we landed we went to a pumpkin patch and he proposed! From that moment on wedding planning was in full swing! We ended up deciding we were going to have a smaller wedding back in Tennessee. Damian McGinty, a singer from Celtic Thunder and an actor who played on the show Glee, agreed to sing live at our wedding. Our big day was September 26th, 2021 in Georgetown TN, to say it was perfect would be an understatement. Now we live in Slatington Pennsylvania with our two puppies and baby number one on the way. Before the “I Dos”: The Checklist SOURCE: Various

When you are planning your wedding, there is so much to do before you say “I do.” So that you don’t get overwhelmed, get organized with a wedding planning notebook right from the start. Then once you have gathered your thoughts on the elements you want to have as part of your wedding, you will want to move everything to a checklist. Not only will the checklist include all of your wedding elements, it will also include the timing to start and complete each wedding task. If you are using a professional wedding planner, then finding the right planner will be on your initial list of things to do. If you are getting married out of the area, one smart thing to do is look at planners in the geographic area where you will actually hold your ceremony. You want a planner with local knowledge and local contacts. Once you have your planner in place, they will manage the bulk of your checklist items and communicate with you regularly to make sure

everything at your end is moving on schedule as well. The total list will include fittings for your wedding attire, the mailing of invitations, your guest list, venue, food and every other individual element of your wedding preparation through the wedding day – and beyond (think thank-you notes). The Purpose of the Checklist The purpose of the checklist is to keep all the elements of your wedding moving at a pace that brings everything to completion at just the right moment. A well-structured planning checklist is what allows you to get everything done on time.

Remember When

photos by William “Becky” Beck

Stella Horwith & Donald Hartzell on their wedding day on August 11, 1951 Better yet, if you build in ample lead time for each task you should never feel rushed. Beyond that, a wedding planning checklist helps you ensure that no steps or items are forgotten along the way. Keep in mind, you can always add items as you go. Overall, the checklist improves your efficiency by minimizing mistakes. With the checklist, as each step is done you check it off and proceed to the next. Finding Your Checklist There's no such thing as the "right" engagement length, which means there's no pressure to follow a checklist timeline that doesn't fit your needs. Here is our recommendation: Do an online search for “wedding planning checklist.” You will come up with numerous “wedding checklist” links from major bride magazines, the very wellknown The Knot and others. Review the options and you should very quickly find the checklist that works best for you. FEBRUARY 3, 2022 || townandcountrygazette.com

Getting Married on the Beach

SOURCE: Various

So you’re getting married and you’ve decided it’s going to be in the summer. What about a beach wedding? Beach weddings are super romantic and offer great photo opportunities. We thought we would suggest three locations in Delaware – each with its own personality, as well as Cape May, New Jersey, known for its charm and Victorian Bed & Breakfasts. Delaware Beach Weddings In Delaware, three wonderful and distinct locations you can consider for a beach wedding are Bethany Beach, which is considered the most “wedding friendly,” Lewes, which has a similar charm and vibe to Cape May in New Jersey, and Rehoboth Beach with its classic boardwalk style. All offer public beaches for the ceremony and local venues for the reception. No matter where you decide – each of these locations is walkable with unending charm – always check the local requirements for permits and licenses before your big day. For instance, do you need a permit to get married on the beach in Delaware? The answer is “yes.” Ceremonies in any public space in Delaware require a permit. In Bethany, the most “wedding friendly,” getting a permit is easy – and free. Please note however that beach weddings need to be held after lifeguard hours (5:30 pm in the summer).

Another key requirement at Bethany Beach is that Wedding Officiants must be registered with the state. So again, be sure and check the rules! A Cape May Wedding With its beautiful Victorians on the water’s edge, Cape May is one of the most romantic wedding locations in our greater region. It’s great to know that there are no restrictions for ceremonies on the beaches and bay at Sunset Beach or the Ferry Area in Cape May. Also, insurance for the day is not required. Do note that on-beach receptions and alcohol are not permitted. For a Cape May wedding, or Continued on page 18

any New Jersey beach wedding, be certain to look into the requirements for getting a New Jersey Marriage License. If you and your spouseto-be are both from outside of New Jersey, you need to apply at the Municipal Registrar’s Office in the municipality where your ceremony will take place. After the Wedding If you’re staying on after your wedding in Delaware or Cape May, t h e re ’ s a lovely experience you might want to take advantage of, the 85-minute cruise between Lewes and Cape May. This cruise takes you across the Delaware Bay that connects the iconic New Jersey peninsula and shore towns with Delaware’s incredible beaches.

The great thing about this cruise is that in addition to bringing yourselves, you can also bring your bikes and even your car. Along the way be sure and watch for historic lighthouses, picturesque harbors, oceangoing vessels, native and migratory seabirds, whales and dolphin “escorts”! No matter how you make the journey, you will also be making another memorable wedding memory.

Planning a Frugal (not cheap) Wedding SOURCE: thesimpledollar.com (edited)

The average wedding and reception in 2019 (the most recent pre-COVID year for which data is available) was $28,000, according to The Knot Real Weddings Study. Many people dream of a beautiful, unforgettable wedding, but not many long for the financial aftermath that is almost a guarantee. The best solution is to take a serious look at all of the

expenses involved and find realistic, frugal ways to cut back on each expense without tinkering with the magic or the memories. We found seventeen ideas for planning a frugal, but not “cheap” wedding at thesimpledollar.com (full link at the end of this article). Here is a sampling of the strategies you will find there that collectively can shave thousands of dollars from the budget of any average wedding. Start planning early The more time you give yourself to plan, the easier it becomes to identify bargains and turn them into a reality. Since so many wedding features are expensive, investing more time yourself can cut those costs quickly. Give yourself an extra few months between the start of planning and the event. Ask for wedding help Instead of wedding gifts Strategy: Ask family and friends for assistance at the ceremony in lieu of gifts Savings: $1,400

Hold the ceremony at home or outdoors Strategy: Have the wedding and reception at a friend or family member’s property Savings: $10,500 Another approach is to see if you can use a public park for the wedding and utilize any structures the parks and recreation department may have for a reception. Many such departments have nice older houses near parks that can be used for events like this. While there will still be a notable cost involved for this, it’s often significantly lower than paying for a full-service venue, possibly saving you $6,500. Do the catering yourself or Hire a family-owned restaurant Strategy #1: Have friends and family cater for you in lieu of a gift Savings: $2,550 Strategy #2: Ask a locally owned restaurant to cater the meal instead of a wedding catering service Savings: $650 Buy a cake from a Grocery store or cupcakes Strategy: Look at grocery stores for cake options Savings: $250 Another option is to simply buy cupcakes. You

can buy large numbers of cupcakes from many bakeries for as little as $1 each. Pair that with a $30 cake stand and you can provide 70 cupcakes with a beautiful display for just $100. Go minimal with the flowers Strategy: Cut back on the flowers Savings: $900 Make your own invitations Strategy: Print your own wedding invitations Savings: $390 For the full story and many more frugal, moneysaving wedding tips, visit: https://www. thesimpledollar.com/save-money/eighteen-tipsfor-a-frugal-not-cheap-wedding/ Yoga Reiki Wellness

Worrying Less SOURCE: asafeplaceonline.com (edited)

We can worry about almost anything. We can worry about our job, the state of the world, our relationships – even our upcoming wedding! Have you ever heard of “wedding jitters”? Worrying is behind most of that. What’s important to know, is that studies suggest worrying can negatively impact our health with the unnecessary stress it brings into our lives. That’s not good for us. Instead of worrying, which is usually focused on what can go wrong we should be spending energy on reaching goals and enjoying the positive things in life. Here are some simple ideas that might help lessen the amount of worrying you do overall. Keep a Journal Whenever you find yourself worrying, write down what you’re worrying about. Be as specific as possible. Having a record of what has worried you can help you see the number of worries that play out in your life. If a similar worry repeats itself, you can learn from past experiences that there may be little or nothing to really worry about.

Practice Mindfulness If you find yourself worrying about things way out in the future that you have no possible control over as you sit there today, stop and redirect your thoughts. Live in “today’s moment.” This takes practice but paired with deep-breathing exercises it can create a greater sense of calm. Go “Off the Grid” An organization called Anxiety UK did a study that revealed half of the participants felt worried when disconnected from their social media or email. Think about that. If that applies to you, maybe consider pursuing a regular “active disconnection” from all the stimulus and noise of social media at a specific time of day. This could even involve taking up a hobby – baking, long walks, or visits to the library. Any one of those things could help lessen your worrying. Plan “Worry Time” Create a brief spot in your daily routine dedicated to worrying. This could be in the shower, with a cup of coffee in the mornings, or on your lunch break. Then at any other time of the day when you catch yourself worrying, procrastinate it to your next “worry time.”

OFF THE SHELF

Slatington Library News Submitted by Louise Bechtel

The Slatington Library is open for those looking for books and/or computer use. CHANGE IN MASK POLICY. Due to the increase in Covid-19 cases, we are now asking everyone to wear a mask in the library. The library will once again be sponsoring the Donald Owens reading incentive program. This program is held in honor of Donald Owens who was an avid reader and friend of the library. The participants need to read 10 books and write down the titles. For every 10 books read, a raffle ticket will be given. Four $25.00 prizes will be given away. This program will begin on February 18th, and end on May 1st. Readers of all ages are invited to participate. The Book Club is currently reading “Crazy in

love” by Luanne Rice. They will meet virtually on February 7th at 1:00. Their book will be “Wonder of lost causes” by Nick Trout. Copies of the book are available at the library. If you are interested in joining the book club, please contact the library. The library is currently receiving donations in memory of John Kisthardt and Debbie Silfies. We thank the families for including the library in remembrance of their loved ones. If you would like to purchase a book in memory or in honor of someone, please contact the library. The library is no longer collecting fines for overdue books. The practice was suspended during the Covid-19 closures, and our regional library consortium decided to keep it that way. If you have any overdue materials, please return them to the library, there will be no fines, no questions asked. The book return is always open. You can sign-up for a library card in our online catalog and select e-books and audio books from the Carbon Lehigh Downloadable Library. Both links are on our web page.

[This is the last part of the poem, which David B. Brunner wrote.] The pastor thanked him And said, “Be still, That [silver dollar] stirred my heart And did me much good.

This preaching is like going uphill, And it is a hard job, When I preach to many rich people And have nothing in my money-pocket.” The women went out the church then And drove straight home, And the men regretted very much That they were not also there. To collect money for the pastor They sent out a committee, Then they [got] from every member A nice contribution. On account of that the membership numbers Significantly increased. They paid their debts with cash What was left over Every Sunday the treasurer Wrote in his cash ledger. Often times have no motivation; They preach superficially, And have no substance in [the sermon.] To explain

the Scriptures nicely and clearly – A man does prepare for that; He must invest much money and time, And must also study hard. Now if I would be your pastor, Then in the nicest ways I would – with all my powers – Explain the text most clearly.

Now when you womenfolk in the church Would babble for me during my sermon, Then I would pound on the pulpit, That things would rattle rather strongly. And when you menfolk would talk And not listen to me,

And the heads would nod far down, ‘Sleep loudly’ or snore; And would not pay my salary in cash, When it was due, Then I do not know what I, in anger, Would do with my songbook. If you would willingly have good preaching And this every man wishes, Then give your pastor enough pay That he also can preach. [Es wunnert mich, eb die Grundsau ihre Schadde sehne watt.
