Our Wonderful Animals By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette
In this issue our focus is on our wonderful animals, especially our dogs and cats. Not only are they our fun and furry companions, but dogs, for instance, are incredibly in tune with their humans. different categories of service dogs and the amazing abilities they have to help some of us negotiate life. We will also look at situations where we, as the humans, must take charge to make sure our animals are safe. The specific situations we’re going to look at in this issue include fireworks and heat. In terms of heat, we will hopefully never see the extreme heat that Portland, Oregon, the Pacific Northwest and western Canada saw in recent weeks. Yet even in a more normal “high heat” period, we have to be aware of the heat’s effect on our animals and protect them from overheating and heatstroke. We have an excellent article on this with a range of tips from Multnomah County Animal Services. Multnomah County is where Portland, Oregon is located. Be sure and read “High Heat Days and Pet Safety” for all the details. Also, although we think of the Fourth of July as the big day for fireworks, it is no longer the only day for fireworks. Fireworks have become part of public and private celebrations throughout the summer in communities all over our region. For our pets, the sudden bright lights and loud explosions are inexplicable and scary. We will give you tips for protecting and calming your pets during any fireworks event in “How To: Protect Your Pets During Fireworks.” For those of you looking to adopt a cat or dog, there are certain things to consider before you Continued on page 5

bring your new pal home. You want to be sure the animal is going to be a good fit for your home environment and also, there are definite cost considerations to evaluate as well. Although cats are a little more mysterious in their ways, if you’re adopting one from a shelter, the staff should be able to give insight into the cat’s personality based on their observations. If you’re thinking of adopting a cat, be sure and read “What a Cute Little Kitty!” On the dog side of things, the “mixed breed” is the number one dog in American homes. But knowing the traits of the breeds involved can still be very helpful. We look at traits of the Top Ten Dog Breeds for 2021 as ranked by the American Kennel Association in “Traits of the Top 10 Dog Breeds.” And of course, whether you adopt a dog or a cat, you may have to give up a little bit of the couch. We hope you enjoy the issue. Please join us next time when we have one of our biggest issues of the year focused on “Health & Wellness.”
High Heat Days and Pet Safety

Summer is officially here and with it can come excessive heat. Like humans, pets and animals are susceptible to surging temperatures. Heatstroke in animals is not only life threatening, it can be difficult to treat once it begins. Because overheating in pets typically occurs before heatstroke, prevention and hydration are key. temperature rises, keep your pets indoors and hydrated and keep the contact information for your local veterinarian on hand. Pets Don’t Sweat An interesting thing to know is that animals can’t sweat so they can't disperse heat like humans can. Animals cool down by panting, laying on cool surfaces, and drinking water. If they don’t have access to these things, or cannot cool themselves through panting, their internal body temperature continues to rise, sending the body into a state of crisis. Pets also rely on the pads of their paws to cool down. When it gets hot outside, keep pets indoors as much as possible and do not over exercise them. A good rule of thumb is that if you need to be indoors due to the heat, your pet does too. Never Leave Pets in Cars If you have to run errands, leave your pets at home. Help Pets Stay Cool Take the following steps to make sure your pet stays cool and healthy throughout periods of
extreme heat: • Don't leave your pets in a parked car, even while running an errand. • Take your dog on bathroom breaks in the morning, during the coolest time of day. • As temperatures climb, avoid pavement and walk in a grassy area. • Provide unlimited fresh, clean water for your pet; place some ice in their water bowl. • Avoid excessive exercise with your pet. • Provide air conditioning and stay indoors as much as possible. If you must go outside, seek shade and avoid putting your pet in direct sunlight for long periods of time.

• If your pet appears to be panting excessively (or if your cat is panting at all), wrap them in a wet towel and check for symptoms of heatstroke. Signs of Overheating: Overheating typically occurs before heatstroke does. Symptoms of overheating can include: • Excessive panting or difficulty breathing. • Increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. • Seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomit along with an elevated body temperature of over 104°. Signs of Heatstroke: Signs of heatstroke vary for cats and dogs. For cats, be on the lookout for: • Rapid pulse and breathing • Redness of the tongue and mouth • Vomiting

• Lethargy • Stumbling, staggering gait • Rectal temperature of over 105° F If your pet is experiencing these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately. Symptoms of heatstroke in dogs can include: • Excessive panting • Glassy eyes • Weakness • Fast heart rate • Drooling • Seizures • Vomiting • Diarrhea • Body temperature over 104° F. Again, if your pet is experiencing these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately. Outdoor Pets and Wildlife Bring cats and dogs indoors as much as possible. Consider reaching out to community members or a neighbor to watch an outdoor pet if needed. Wildlife is also susceptible to heat. Consider keeping bird feeders full and keep a water dish on the ground, in the shade, for outdoor animals. This can help feral cats, squirrels, possums and other animals.

Service Dogs and Their Jobs
SOURCE: purina.co.uk
Dogs are truly amazing. Their impressive loyalty and love of humans also means that they make wonderful aids to those with special needs and disabilities as service dogs. Service dogs are often a lifeline to their handlers, offering more freedom and a boost to overall confidence and wellbeing. Here are the primary categories of service dogs and the jobs they do. Guide Dogs Guide dogs are among the most common assistance dogs you'll encounter. Specially trained

to support blind and visually impaired people, guide dogs are so intelligent they know when to actively disobey commands and act in the best interests of their handler. Labradors and Golden Retrievers are commonly used in this category. Hearing Dogs Dogs that help those with hearing loss can inform their owners about smoke alarms, doorbells, oven timers and even crying babies. When they hear the noise, the assistance dog is trained to place a paw on their handler and then lead them either towards or away from the noise, depending on the cause. Seizure Alert and Response Dogs Some dogs can be trained to recognize when their handler is about to have a seizure and can call for help and position themselves to protect their handlers during the episode. Larger support dogs can even physically move their owners if they have their seizure in a dangerous location such as a road. Diabetic Alert Dogs Diabetic alert dogs can pick up scent changes in blood glucose levels and then alert their owners when their blood sugar is too high or low, allowing them to act accordingly as soon as possible. Some can even alert others in the household or set off an alarm when their owner is in urgent need of medical attention. Allergy Detection Dogs Allergy detection dogs are trained to alert their handler if they smell anything that could cause them to suffer from a potential reaction, ensuring that they avoid contact with it. These assistance dogs are very popular with children as they can help to give them more independence in their day to day lives, while also keeping them safe from harmful allergens. Mobility Assistance Dogs Mobility assistance dogs offer an invaluable service to those with mobility impairments. They News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || JULY 15, 2021
can assist with tasks including everything from opening doors, turning on lights and pressing buttons to being able to fetch items for their handlers. Larger breeds are favored for this category as they are strong enough to assist their handlers, providing balance and support or even pulling a wheelchair. Autism Service Dogs People with autism often have difficulty navigating social settings. An autism service dog can be a great help and provide emotional support and stress relief. Children with autism are also more likely to run away or wander off. An autism service dog can protect and keep track of them and alert parents when their child is in a dangerous situation. Psychiatric Service Dogs Psychiatric service dogs can provide emotional support for those suffering from mental health disorders, such as PTSD, anxiety or depression. Psychiatric service dogs provide their owners with some much-needed peace of mind and can be trained to ensure locations are safe prior to entering, such as the home by going in first and turning on lights by operating foot pedals.

What a Cute Little Kitty! SOURCE: purina.co.uk
You've decided to give a cat from a shelter a forever home – a fantastic thing to do. Whether you're looking to adopt a kitten or an adult cat with a fully formed, unique personality, there are many things to consider. Here are some tips on how to adopt a cat. Adopting a Cat When considering how to adopt a cat, the first thing you need to do is locate a shelter with an established reputation. You can easily find these by searching online. Most have online directories of the cats they currently have up for adoption. You can also speak with the staff for advice on the kind of cat that would be best suited for you and your home environment. Finding the Perfect Cat One of the most important things when adopting a cat is to make sure that they have the right personality to fit in with your existing family. Shelters will be able to provide you with a detailed history of their residents' backgrounds, as well as advising on which of their cats might suit your family best. Just like deciding whether to adopt an adult cat or a kitten, choosing which breed to adopt is a really important consideration. Although personality traits vary between individual cats, you can learn a lot from breed type. This is more research you can do online. Continued on page 21

Traits of the Top 10 Dog Breeds SOURCE: nylabone.com
Things to consider before bringing a dog home to join your family include the dog’s size and also its personality traits. Although the number one dog in America is actually the mixed breed, for the past 25 years, the American Kennel Club (AKC) has named the Labrador Retriever as America’s number one purebred dog breed. Here is the most recent “Top 10 Dog Breeds” list released by the AKC along with key traits of each for your consideration. #1: Labrador Retriever The Lab makes its 25th straight appearance as the number one breed. This family-friendly, smart, and fun-loving breed is an American household favorite. Their desire to please and gentle disposition also help them excel as guide dogs and searchand-rescue dogs. #2: German Shepherd Dog A true dog lover’s pet, the German Shepherd Dog is intelligent and hardworking. They are also known to be extremely versatile and courageous. They are often trained to assist people with disabilities, the police, the military and other service organizations. #3: Golden Retriever A very athletic breed, the Golden Retriever is another family-friendly pet with a fantastic demeanor. Because they love to run and play, they’re a great fit for families with young children. Also skilled workers, Goldens are popular hunting companions, guide dogs, and search-and-rescue dogs. #4: Bulldog One of the fastest-growing breeds in terms of popularity, Bulldogs are fun and loveable. They are very calm when compared with the previously mentioned breeds, and they make great companions. They also don’t need a ton of exercise – they actually prefer to stay home and relax most of the time.
JULY 15, 2021 || townandcountrygazette.com
#5: Beagle Conveniently sized with short, low-maintenance coats, the Beagle is a peaceful and cheerful pet. Unlike Bulldogs, Beagles do require some exercise, so a fenced-in yard is an ideal setting. A hunting breed with great curiosity, these hounds enjoy exploring and keeping their noses active. #6: French Bulldog French Bulldogs have mixed demeanors – sometimes they love to run and play, and sometimes they just want to lie around and be loved. They thrive with human contact and attention, so this isn’t a breed to be kept alone for hours at a time. #7: Yorkshire Terrier “Yorkies” are the most popular small dog breed in America. They become extremely devoted to their owners, and their small stature makes them a great choice for people who live in condos or apartments. They can be a bit feisty at times, but overall this brave and energetic breed is excellent for anyone wanting a small companion. #8: Poodle Poodles are known for making regular appearances in dog shows. Their elegant form never goes unnoticed, but their personalities are just as charming. They’re smart, easy to train, eager to please, and lots of fun to be around. #9: Rottweiler Large and powerful, Rottweilers are sometimes misunderstood because of their stature. They are actually very intelligent, easily trained, and willing to work. Their broad chests and muscular bodies stand out, but Rottweilers have even bigger hearts and make for devoted companions. #10: Boxer Boxers have endless energy and love to play. Although they can be headstrong at times, Boxers are extremely loyal to their owners. They are great with kids while also being alert and courageous.

What a cute little kitty Continued from page 10
Consider the Costs The cost of adopting a kitten or cat varies. Most shelters ask for an adoption fee to be paid before you take your pet home and that cost varies between organizations. The adoption fee covers the care and treatment your cat received during its time at the shelter, including neutering/spaying and kitten vaccinations. There are other costs to consider as well. In preparation for the arrival of your new pet, you will need to buy pet food and dishes, a bed, litter box, litter and probably a cat carrier for transporting the pet home. You may also want to purchase some cat toys, although you can easily make your own. Expect the Unexpected Probably the biggest cost to take into consideration will be your veterinary bills. Certain bills are planned, such as vaccinations, de-worming and flea prevention. You may also want to microchip your pet if it will go outside so it can be found and recognized if it gets lost. If owning a pet is new to you, it’s important to know that unexpected vet bills can be very expensive. The cost of treatment, or even a stay at a pet hospital could run into the thousands of dollars. Although a monthly cost, cat insurance can help you cover unplanned veterinary bills. Another potential cost that is easily forgotten, is the cost of boarding your pet if you go on vacation. If you have a friend or family member who can take care of your pet while you’re gone, that’s great, but otherwise you will need to use a boarding facility, which will likely charge you a fixed daily rate. Adopting a kitten or adult cat is a wonderful thing to do and your new furry companion will most likely give you great pleasure. By knowing the potential range of costs, you will make your ownership experience even more enjoyable.

How To: Protect Your Pets During Fireworks SOURCE: sfgate.com
The noise of fireworks may not be your cup of tea, but the booms and flashes of light can be especially stressful for your four-legged friends, who find the commotion startling and inexplicable. Here are some ways to protect your four-legged friends and help them through this season of official and unofficial fireworks. Hiding space Dogs, in particular, have been known to dig under or jump over fences, break tethers, or even shatter windows due to firework fears. That's why it's important to "secure your pet in an area of your home where he or she is safe, comfortable, and sheltered," says Kimberley Alboum, director of shelter outreach and policy engagement for the Humane Society of the United States. Pets feel more secure when they have designated places to hide, such as a dark, enclosed closet. Lock all exits Loud noises, lights, and even the smell of smoke from fireworks are all triggers that can send your pets running. Make sure to lock all doors and Continued on page 22

Pets and Fireworks Continued from page 21
windows to ensure they stay safely indoors. While it's good that your pets can't escape, keep in mind that their anxiety might cause them to become destructive. Be sure to remove anything from reach that can become damaged or may harm the pet if chewed or eaten. Secure their collar Animal control officials nationwide have seen a 30% to 60% increase in lost pets annually from July 4 to 6. In the event that your pet manages to break free and bolt outside, be proactive. Check that its collar is securely fastened so you can be reunited. Make sure all ID tags are properly attached to your pet’s collar with your contact information and cell numbers. Also, update your microchip registrations and pet license information to be sure they are current. Drown out loud noise One method many pet owners use to quell their furry friend's stress is to play soothing music or turn on the TV. According to one expert, create a safe space for cats as far from the noise as possible with classical music or white noise playing. For dogs, play loud music to drown out fireworks. Act normal Your pet is in tune with you, so be aware of your own actions and go about your normal routine like any other day when fireworks are going off. Act calmly and give your animals reassuring pets and hugs. Calm Your Pet As an owner, you can comfort your pets by 22
petting and hugging them, talking in a soothing voice, providing a treat, and staying nearby, if possible. Your pet feels comfort when you give it attention. An anxiety wrap, which is similar to a baby swaddle, or a tight-fitting T-shirt or sweater can also calm a fearful dog or cat. Or ask your veterinarian or local pet retailer about natural calming products that can help. Keep your pet hydrated When dogs are fearful they can pant, hide, and avoid the water bowl. It’s important to keep your animals hydrated, so keep their water bowls full and feed them wet food. You can also offer water in multiple drinking areas throughout the house.

Reading with Pets
By A. Barrella, Advanced Tutor at Reading Escapades and Math Explorers
Does your child struggle with reading? Do you want your child to read more, but they do not like reading? Have your child read to your pet! Do you not have any pets? Never fear, there are websites for virtual reading programs or you can contact your local library to see if they have any upcoming programs. There are several benefits to having your child read to dogs, and a ton of studies to support this claim. One of the biggest benefits is that your

Another benefit of the programs is that the responsibility of taking care of a pet is taught to the children without needing to own the pet. Reading aloud is often scary, especially when children are still learning to read. Reading to dogs offers children the ability to read aloud without thinking they are being judged by siblings or parents. This causes them less stress and the ability to get better at reading without the pressure of impressing people. As your children become more comfortable with reading, they might want to read aloud to a new audience or read before bedtime. If you want more ideas on things to do with your children, or if you want one-on-one coaching for your child this summer, check out our website at www.read2day.com or call us at 610-826-READ.

submitted by Nancy Thatcher
The trail through the woods in Indian Trail Park has been completed! Members of Lehigh Township Rails to Trails have finished covering the path with gravel. In addition, three areas within the path’s loop now have plantings of native perennials and shrubs. Eventually, labels will be installed to identify many of these and other native plants found throughout the woods. During this hot summer weather, check out this path in the cool woods. While the spring wildflowers are no longer blooming, the summer ones will soon appear. Colorful and unusual fungi can be found on many of the fallen tree trunks and branches as well. We plan to have a Grand Opening of the path later this summer. Members will be on hand to discus creek creatures, native and invasive plants. Watch for announcements of this event. For more information about our organization, please contact Nancy at 484 330-9627.

Wann mei Experience eenich Blessier bringt zu deine Leser, dann sin sie Wilkumm dezu. -Gottlieb Boonastiel (Thomas Harter) A writ of divorce Polly [his wife] was once an exceedingly lovely girl. She gave six lawyers and five doctors the glove [jilted them] for me. For a while after we were married, I was considered the luckiest man on the mountain, but I would soon trade off my luck on a dog and then shoot the dog. We could not rightly understand each other. She had a good temper from the start and I wasn’t far behind when it came to fighting. For us, a cow died. She said she had the wolf by the tail and I said she has hollow horns. We argued about it for a whole week. After that she broke the sugar bowl and I scolded her a little. Then she said I was mean and miserly, and we did not speak to one 36
another the whole week. One day we got into a fight about heaven, and it went on until we agreed to get a writ of divorce and each go on their own way. I went to the village to get a lawyer to write up the article, and I did not get home until late. It was a dark night and the light in the kitchen gave me a longing for home, and I was pulling up stakes and it was no time to stop. [Hurrying home as fast as I could go.] I went in and there was the best supper on the table that I in my lifetime have seen. The coffee pot smoked on the stove, in the middle of the table stood a large plate full of pancakes. She knew I liked pancakes. The lawyer’s paper was stuck in my coat pocket and while I was eating she watched it like an old cat watches a mouse. When I was finished eating I took the lawyer’s paper out of my pocket and without saying anything handed it to her. She read it a little, what she could, and that was not much – since a lawyer’s paper is hard to read when the ink’s dry [when it becomes cold] – then she said, “Gottlieb, you gave me too much: The house, the cow, the two pigs and half of the money. Yes, you did not leave anything for yourself.” “Well,” I said, “I can work to earn a living and you can’t. I promised to honor you when I married you and I will; whatever happened to us, I want to hold to that promise.” Polly jumped up, grabbed me by the neck, and kissed me for the first time in some years. I threw the agreement in the stove and that evening I caressed her again like in the old times. She agreed to forgive me about having a cow over the sugar bowl and as far as concerned the heaven argument, we decided to start a branch establishment here on earth. This is the case with many families in this world. They don’t understand one another until the best part of their married life has flown by. If my experience brings any pleasure to your readers, then they are welcome to it. [Thomas Harter is one of those writers that likes to throw in “Dutchified” English words instead of traditional Dialect terms. That can make for some interesting looking words if you want to maintain the Buffington- Barba spelling system. But in a few cases, like the words, “Branch-establishment,” I just arbitrarily decided to keep the English spelling.] News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || JULY 15, 2021
Door-to-door scams Submitted by STEVE GARDNER
Warm weather is here which means door-to-door sales crews are here, too. But what they’re selling isn’t always legit. Be cautious anytime a stranger comes knocking, especially if the visitor is trying to sell you goods or services. Be wary of contractors who say they stopped by because they just happened to be in the neighborhood. The good ones are usually too busy to roam around in search of work. Also be on guard for high pressure tactics to make a quick decision for a steep discount, and requests for payment upfront. Your best bet is to proactively seek out services if you need them, versus reacting to an unexpected sales pitch. It’s always okay to explain you don’t do business at your front door (or to not answer when strangers knock). Many scams originate right at your fingertips through your computer or smartphone. The good news is the way to block them is also within your grasp. Here are three tips to keep your devices safe from criminals. Make sure your devices’ operating systems are up to date; you should be able to set an auto-update feature that downloads the latest software when available. Next, make sure to change
the password on your Wi-Fi router so it’s different from the password it came with. If you have a lot of devices connected to it, they could be vulnerable if the router is compromised. Lastly, a password manager is a great way to create unique and hardto-guess passwords for all of your online accounts and apps. Report scams to local law enforcement. For help from AARP, call 1-877-908-3360 or visit the AARP Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/ fraudwatchnetwork.

board components aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), in Newport News, Virginia, June 29, 2021. John C. Stennis is in Newport News Shipyard working alongside NNS, NAVSEA and contractors conducting Refueling and Complex Overhaul as part of the mission to deliver the warship back in the fight, on time and on budget, to resume its duty of defending the United States. With more than 90 percent of all trade traveling by sea, and 95 percent of the world’s international phone and internet traffic carried through fiber optic cables lying on the ocean floor, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity and security of the United States is directly linked to a strong and ready Navy. We’re celebrating you down here As they must be above I truly hope your special day Is filled with peace and love This day was always special As we gathered ‘round you here We’d sing and laugh and celebrate Your day with so much cheer I miss those special moments That we shared throughout the years It’s hard to find that on this day My eyes now fill with tears
Happy Heavenly Birthday Stephen, we all miss you and love you. Mom, Meatball, Tabitha, Sabrina, Nana, and Mike JULY 15, 2021 || townandcountrygazette.com
I’m trying hard to smile for you But, ohhhh...that empty chair.... I turn around and find myself Still shocked that you’re not there Please know I’m thinking of you As I go throughout each day This day is very special though Because it’s your birthday. kp© 2014 Out of the Ashes/FB
