Welcome Pet Lovers By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette
Did you know that seventy percent of U.S. households, or about 90.5 million families, own a pet, according to the 2021-2022 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA)? My mother always said, “Everything in moderation.” In the pet department I grew up with one Siamese cat for a number of years until he died, and then one miniature poodle. They each had their personality. B L U E M O U N TA I N

The Siamese would run off for two or three days at a time and then come home down the alley yowling his head off to let us know he was back. My dad would meet him at the front door and the cat would fly by heading straight to his food dish with his tail straight up in the air. Our poodle was a high-energy sort. He loved to launch from my bed in the bedroom at one end of the hallway, tear the length of the house to the living room and do a “U-turn” up, across and down the back of the sofa, and then repeat. He would do this endlessly until my mother yelled “make him stop!” which I then did. But as a city-dwelling adult I have not always followed the “moderation” advice of my mom, having had as many as four dogs at one time. In that particular period it was three adopted greyhounds and one adopted shepherd-terrier mix that loved to herd them. It was always a good show. Dogs and their love for their humans are extraordinary. When you adopt a dog, it may take a while – a few weeks, or even a little longer – to fully adjust to your new life together. Based on my limited experience, I think the dogs adapt Continued on page 5

faster than the humans. I also think they make fun of us, especially when there’s a pack. In this issue, we’re going to give you some excellent tips for establishing a successful new relationship with your adopted pal. Read “Adopting a Dog: Top Tips” for all the details. Cats can be a little persnickety of course in terms of their personalities, but they are loved the world over. We’ll tell you about three very popular cat breeds and also give you some important catowning advice in “Three Favorite Cat Breeds.” We also give you quick info on a few of the best dog breeds to consider, especially if your family includes kids. See “Top Dog Breeds for Kids and Families” to learn more. Of course not everyone is into dogs and cats. Some people like guinea pigs and ferrets, and
others, snakes and reptiles. If you’re thinking of keeping a snake or reptile like an iguana as a pet, there is a lot of information you need to know before bringing one into your home. Be certain to read “Pet Snakes and Iguanas: Right for You?” to start getting a feel for what can be involved. Naturally, one of the most difficult pet-related things you have to deal with is when your pet dies. We take a look at that grief and ways to cope in “Grieving the Loss of a Pet.” We hope you find this issue informative. We look forward to having you join us next time when we focus on Health & Wellness. Until then…

Adopting a Dog: Top Tips SOURCE: ontariospca.ca (edited)
Dogs are exceptional animals, and their ability and desire to form deep and loving bonds with humans is extraordinary. By adopting, you are truly giving your dog an amazing gift – a second chance. After the adoption, everyone – the dog, you and anyone else in the household – will need time to settle into the new relationship and routines. It is important to be patient and build trust. Here are a few adoption tips that will help you bring out your dog’s superstar qualities. Help relax your dog at home alone / Adopted dogs usually form deep bonds with their new parents and in the beginning, separation may be difficult. Help give your dog the confidence to be home alone with these confidence-building tips: • Leave the house frequently for short periods by walking out the door, closing it, and then returning. Once your dog is comfortable with short separations, randomly add some longer ones. • Ignore your dog during departures and arrivals: be very casual. • Practice mini departures inside by closing doors when you take a shower, use the bathroom, etc. • Give your dog a safe chew toy stuffed with treats before you leave the house. Establish household rules and routines / If your household has more than one person, it is especially important that rules and routines be followed by every member. This encourages consistency and will give your dog stability and leadership. The more consistent your family is, the quicker your dog can figure things out. Reward behaviors you want / Consider what your dog finds rewarding and use it to motivate your dog to repeat behaviors you like. A reward can be treats, walks, praise and so forth. We frequently notice and respond to the “mistakes” our dogs make, but instead, respond to the behaviors you like and those will become the ones your dog repeats. Gain insights from training experts / Reading materials from dog behavior and training experts can give you excellent insights on how to handle a variety of dog-behavior issues. Some helpful resources in this area: • The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell • Power of Positive Dog Training by Pat Miller • www.dogwise.com (extensive collection of books and videos for dog lovers and trainers through the website) JULY 21, 2022 || townandcountrygazette.com
Children and Pets / Teach your children to be considerate of and respect your new pet. Things they should not do: • Disturb a dog that is eating, sleeping or caring for puppies. • Approach a dog’s food, toys or bowl. • Tease, chase or yell at a dog. • Play roughly with dogs or grab their ears and tails. • Corner, crowd or stand over a dog, as this may make the dog feel defensive. Housetrain your dog to prevent indoor accidents / Even if the dog you’ve adopted was previously housetrained, assume for the first couple of weeks that they haven’t been. Take your dog outside on leash directly to the appropriate area and give them a treat as soon as they do their business. Finally, here is a game to avoid. “Catch me if you can” is a game that may cause behavior you don’t really want. In this game your dog will learn she can outrun you and she may think it’s a game of “keep away” when you actually do want her to come to you.

Top Dog Breeds for Kids and Families
Bernese Mountain Dog If your family likes to think big, consider a gentle giant in the form of the Bernese Mountain Dog. These dogs can top 100 pounds, but underneath all the fluff is a sweet, warm-hearted pet known for its gentle nature with children. Boston Terrier Weighing less than 25 pounds, these peopleoriented pups wear low-maintenance "tuxedo" coats. Boston Terriers adapt to apartment living quite handily – although they'll appreciate walks around the block and active games of fetch with the kids.
SOURCE: goodhousekeeping.com (edited)
Dogs can teach kids responsibility, compassion and patience – not to mention being the best playmates anyone could ask for. Before you adopt any pup, however, it's always smart to research the most suitable dog breed for your home and lifestyle. In this article we look at some calm and easy-going pups that are great for families with kids, but also great for first-time dog owners. If you have young children at home, consider adopting an older dog instead of a puppy. Older dogs are generally more patient and laid-back than younger ones, which is key for kids who might pull tails or ears. Temperaments vary based on the individual animal. The American Kennel Club recommends 20 family-friendly breeds as a great place to start your adoption search. Here are a few of those sweet, loving, top 20 breeds. Adopt one of these and your crew won't be able to imagine life without them. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Here’s a breed that lets you combine the portable size of a toy breed with the verve of a sporting breed. The result is an adorable and lively companion in the form of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. These sweet, silky-haired companions get along with just about everyone they meet – including kids and other dogs. The heart-melting expression is just a bonus. 16
Labrador Retriever Labs have remained the most popular dog breed for decades for a reason. Labs love kids, adults, other pets – just about everyone. Their sweet demeanor makes them instant BFFs with anyone they meet, but don't underestimate their high energy levels. This is an exuberant breed that needs serious exercise every day. They can grow up to 80 pounds. Golden Retriever Another all-American favorite is the Golden Retriever. It lives up to its status as the quintessential family dog. The Golden Retriever is a quick learner that requires lots of physical activity: they love running, swimming, fetching and playing. In return, they will give you joyful companionship with plenty of silliness thrown in for good measure. French Bulldog No backyard, no problem! City dwellers adore these quiet and low-maintenance pups. Their trademark "bat ears" and smaller stature physically distinguish them from their larger bulldog cousins. The classic “Frenchie” exhibits an alert, playful attitude combined with easygoing adaptability. OUR PICK: A Mutt Yes, mutts aren't an official breed, but that doesn't make them any less loving or adorable. Talk to your local animal rescue for help finding the perfect mixed-breed dog to fit your family and lifestyle. Adopting not only gives one pup a forever home, but also frees up a spot in a shelter for another one in need. When you adopt a dog it’s a long-term commitment, but the rewards are great. Aboriginal People of Australia. The New Testament was first published in 1993; Psalms and Proverbs were added in 2002; and finally in 2013 the entire Bible was completed. All editions run the KJV English and the Dutch in side by side columns, except for the Psalms and Proverbs in the 2002 edition. The Amish text used English sound values to represent the Dutch words, spelling them as though they were English. However, I have respelled their Dutch words to reflect their original German roots, primarily from a Rheinish Palatinate dialect. Further, I also included my own translation to demonstrate the flexibility of the Dialect to represent ideas in more than one way. You will notice a difference of style between the two and also the influence of Standard German on some of their word choices.]

The man and boy in the photo was Warren & Neil Kester, formerly from White Street in Bowmanstown. (both are deceased) The photo was taken in the early 1950s. Warren was good friends of William “Becky” Beck and together had an agreement that if Warren painted and advertised about the Route 45 Drive-In on his 1920s Ford Model A car with a rumble seat, Warren would be able to attend the drive-in once a week with his wife, Catherine, son, Neil and his friend for free. Warren worked at the N.J. Zinc Co and would park his car at work so everyone would be able to see it when driving by. Thank you to Brenda Kester, Neil’s widow, who was kind enough to call the gazette with the information. 22

Pet Snakes and Iguanas: Right for You? Source: a-z-animals.com (edited)
When it comes to pets, not everyone wants a cat or dog. Some people like ferrets and guinea pigs. Others like reptiles and snakes. If you are thinking of keeping a snake or a reptile like an iguana as a pet, there are some important things to know from the start. Keeping a Snake as a Pet Choosing to keep a snake as a pet is very different from keeping a cat or dog. Keeping a snake is tricky and potentially risky. The creatures have unique care requirements and you need to choose one that does not exceed your best handling capabilities. If you’re thinking about a snake, take the following into account: • Snakes can live for two decades – a long-term commitment. • Snakes are extraordinary escape artists. It’s important to have an enclosure that your snake can’t escape. • Most likely, you will need to feed the snake live prey. You can offer them frozen or pre-killed prey (the safest choice), but live food will keep them active and interested. If you go frozen, prepare yourself for storing everything from insects to rats and mice in your freezer. • Unless you’re a skilled handler, keeping any kind of constricting or venomous snake is not recommended. Keeping a Pet Iguana Although iguanas are fairly challenging to keep as pets, many reptile enthusiasts enjoy housing and caring for these massive lizards. If you’re considering adopting a pet iguana of your own, remember that all iguanas can easily become several feet long when fully grown. If you’re serious about adopting an iguana, but aren’t sure what you’ll need to do that successfully, here are the basics of what your new scaly friend will need to thrive in captivity: A VERY large enclosure / The minimum enclosure size for an adult green iguana, for example, should be at least 12 feet long, 6 feet wide, and 6 feet tall. It’s best to have a dedicated room in your home for the lizard’s habitat. Lighting and heating / Iguanas are cold-blooded and rely on their environments to regulate their body temperature. Their enclosures must be JULY 21, 2022 || townandcountrygazette.com
properly heated at all times. Providing the lighting for heat will become quite costly over time. Cage decorations / Iguanas enjoy climbing in captivity, and all species need some kind of enrichment in their enclosures. You’ll need lots of branches, hides for shelter, sturdy platforms or ledges at various elevations, and plants – ideally real. Bedding / Most iguana species spend the bulk of their time climbing. However, their enclosures still require safe bedding to walk on. Lots of food / Most adult iguanas should eat at least one or two large meals each day. A minimum of two dual thermometer/ hygrometers / You will need to monitor your iguana’s enclosure closely to ensure the proper temperature and humidity settings. In general, most iguanas need very warm and slightly humid enclosures to mimic the environment of their natural habitats. You should have at least two or three thermometer/hygrometers designed for reptile enclosures distributed throughout your iguana’s home so you can make adjustments as needed. Bottom Line: If you plan to keep a snake or iguana as a pet, be certain to do thorough research before you bring your new friend home.

Three Favorite Cat Breeds Source: thesprucepets.com (edited)
Cats are popular all over the world often because of their unique physical characteristics or their affectionate personalities. No matter the reason, they leave a lasting, positive impression on cat lovers everywhere. Cats are primarily classified by breed as domestic or purebred. Domestic cats do not have a pedigree history, while purebreds do. Here are just three of the distinctive purebreds that are very popular. Siamese Popular since the 19th century, Siamese cats originated in Thailand (formerly known as Siam). Most Siamese cats have distinct markings called "points" that are the areas of coloration on their face, ears, feet, and tail. Two varieties of Siamese cats have an "apple" shaped head and chubbier body. The other variety features a larger head and slender body. Siamese are a very vocal breed. As a matter of fact, the Disney animated film "Lady and the Tramp" featured Siamese cats singing a song, to demonstrate their intelligence and vocal skills. Breed Overview Height: Up to 14 inches Weight: 5 to 8 pounds Coat and Color: Short coat in seal, chocolate, blue, and lilac with blue eyes Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years Maine Coon Known for its large stature and thick fur coat, the Maine Coon is a cat that is difficult to ignore. Hailing from the state of Maine, the Maine Coon is a gentle giant and a great hunter. Many Maine Coons have extra toes, which makes their already large feet even larger. This is a feature that helps them hunt in the snow because their large feet act as snowshoes. The classic Maine Coon is a brown tabby, but the breed can come in almost any color. Breed Overview Height: Up to 16 inches Weight: 8 to 20 pounds Coat and Color: Long, double coat with more than 75 color combinations and green, gold, or copper eyes. Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years 28
American Shorthair The American shorthair cat is an intelligent shorthair feline that has a round face and short ears. They are often confused with domestic mixedbreed cats, but they are an All-American purebred. This medium-sized cat has a gentle nature that makes this breed a great companion for families with children or other pets. The American shorthair is one of the most popular pedigreed cat breeds in North America. Breed Overview Height: 8 to 10 inches Weight: 8 to 12 pounds Coat and Color: Shorthaired coat with a wide variety of possibilities, including white, black, cream, blue, brown, chinchilla, tortoiseshell, cameo, and many more Life Expectancy: 15 to 20 years Cat Ownership Tip No matter which kind of cat you have, if you keep your cat indoors it will have its longest lifespan, living up to 20 years. Outdoor cats rarely make it past 10 years because they are prone to infections from other animals, can get into fights or suffer attacks by predators and can also get run over by vehicles.
Grieving the Loss of a Pet Source: humanesociety.org (edited)
When a person you love dies, it's natural to feel sorrow, express grief, and expect that friends and family will provide understanding and comfort. You don't always get that understanding when a pet dies. Some people don't understand how central an animal can be in someone's life. The truth is pets mean a great deal to most people, combining companionship, acceptance, emotional support and unconditional love. So when a beloved pet dies, it leaves a big hole in your life. It's not unusual to feel overwhelmed by the intensity of the feelings. Feeling the Loss The sense of loss and grief is as individual as the person. If you have lost a pet and are having difficulty with the emotions, here are a few suggestions that could help you cope. To start, don’t hesitate to reach out to others who can lend a sympathetic ear. If you Continued on page 34 News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || JULY 21, 2022

Rocco, with his owner Jessica Ballas visited the children attending the Wonderful World of Wildlife summer reading program at the Slatington Library. Ms. Ballas taught the children all about skunks6 in the wild and about her pet domestic skunk while Rocco hung out in his cage. She then took him out and held him so they could see him better. Skunk and children had a great time. The Wonderful World of Wildlife story hour takes place on Wednesdays at 1:003 at the Slatington Library. Children 3 years of age up to 5th graders are invited to attend. The program runs through August 10th. 2
need to, do a little online research and you will find many resources and support groups that are likely to be helpful to you. If you keep a journal, do some writing. Maybe a poem about your pet or a short story about its life would help you through the situation. Your veterinarian or local humane society might also be sources of support to offer you pet-loss information. If you loved your pet, losing it is a very big deal and there are many people and support groups that do understand that. Children The loss of a pet may be a child's first experience with death. Some children might think the loss of the pet was their fault or their parents’ fault. They may be too young to understand the situation and could feel guilty and depressed, or frightened that others they love may be taken from them as well. Trying to protect your child by saying the pet ran away could cause your child to expect the pet's return and feel betrayed after discovering the truth. Expressing your own grief may reassure your child that sadness is ok and help them work through their feelings.

A pet's death may also trigger painful memories of other losses and remind caregivers of their own mortality. What's more, the decision to get another pet is complicated by the possibility that the pet may outlive the caregiver. The decision is also influenced by the person's physical and financial ability to care for the new pet. For all these reasons, it's critical that senior pet Page 1/2 - Check the solutions, print more sudoku puz owners take immediate steps to cope with their loss and regain a sense of purpose. Slatington Farmers Market has officially opened By Savannah Brown
The Slatington Farmers Market opened its doors on Friday, June 17 with an outpour of support from the community after a hiatus due to Covid and construction. The farmers market previously had a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 8, 2021, but upon opening, restaurant vendors decided they wanted to do full scale commercial kitchens, which took some time due to supply shortages. Fortunately, The Slatington Farmers Market is back and here to stay thanks in large part to member partners Christopher White, Joshua E. Karoly, and John P. (JP) Karoly. The restaurants are now up and running, so visitors can choose to satisfy their tastebuds from Pizza & Burger Hub’s juicy burgers and a variety of traditional and gourmet pizzas, True Blue Mediterranean Express’ Greek cuisine that includes gyros, falafel, babaganoush, and baklava, and Takkii Ramen’s assortment of traditional Japanese ramen dishes. Within the next month, visitors can also expect to see Uncle Jay’s BBQ, the Waffle Spot by Waffled, Pokë Bowl, and a crepes and salad stand from Sweets & Greens. Partner Christopher White expressed that the idea for the warehouse space “began out of a need

that was identified as our marketplace gained momentum and was flourishing with an uptick in vendor quality” since the Slatington Farmers Market expansion began two and a half years ago. White stated, “We see ourselves as a destination— where someone can stay for more than three hours, and we see ourselves being able to do that by offering great food, a really nice atmosphere, and good local products.” The indoor farmers market has something for everyone with its 29 vendors that has been growing daily with the market’s vast open floor plan. Guests over the age of 21 can even enjoy adult beverages while kids and teens head over to Arcade Shot to play some arcade games. Doan’s Distillery offers craft cocktails, vodka infused “Quakerades,” and $10 Bloody Marys on Sundays. Stone Lake Winery offers a variety of red and white wines and their signature wine hard Italian ices, and while there’s no smoking permitted inside the building, visitors can also grab hand-packed cigars and other tobacco products from Smoke It Up Cigars. Guests of all ages can enjoy tasty treats from 27 Degrees Ice Cream, Bulb Coffee, which offers hot

and iced beverages, special edition drinks like their new campfire latte, as well as delicious cupcakes and pastries from Blondies, and Emersion Nutrition’s smoothies, energy teas/refreshers, protein donuts and other snacks. Since a farmers’ market wouldn’t be complete without fresh produce, patrons can also enjoy selections from Bleiler’s Produce Patch. Their leafy greens, ripe strawberries and tomatoes, juicy apples, and assortment of produce can be seen right as you walk through the entrance. Whispering Myrtle Farms is also located near the entrance and features their locally grown, hand-picked flowers and bouquets. Shoppers can purchase a variety of high-quality foods, health and beauty aids, and home goods at low prices from Slatedale Discount Provisions. Tammy’s Custom Designs and Gifts offers gifts and custom printing on just about anything. From coffee mugs and tumblers, to pillows, blankets, t-shirts, hoodies, socks, hats, coasters, keychains, and signs, Tammy can customize whatever you’re looking for. Shoppers can also purchase furniture from Live Edge Custom Furniture or browse through an infinite number of crafts and antiques that are spread throughout the market, which extends into The Slatington Farmers Market’s sister business, The Slatington Marketplace. Visitors can expect to see events like live music, gun shows, beer and wine festivals, Oktoberfest, and the annual kids’ consignment shop in the coming months. Be sure to check out The Slatington Farmers Market’s Facebook and Instagram for updates on vendors and events. Interested vendors can send them a message on Facebook for more information on joining the market. The Slatington Farmers Market is located at 8281
PA-873 in Slatington, and is open to the public every Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. With their fun-filled family atmosphere, seasonal events, live music, and new vendors being added daily, The Slatington Farmers Market offers a oneof-a-kind experience you won’t want to miss.
