Whether your thing is rafting on a river, soaking up the sun or reading a good thriller or love story, summer fun comes in all shapes and sizes. in mind this summer anytime you are around water or just out in the summer heat. Whether you’re tubing on the river, swimming in the ocean, or just laying around or playing around anywhere in the summer heat, safety should be top of mind at this time of year. We are also going to look at Father’s Day, which is just around the corner, and with the emphasis on “fun” we will give you some fresh ideas for things to do with Dad (or any father-figure in your life). We’ll give you Father’s Day activities a child can do with Dad or the whole family can do with Dad. Please check out “Celebrating Dad with Father’s Day Fun” for all the details. We will also look at some straight-up family-fun ideas. Now some of these ideas will truly be for the entire family, but others will be mainly aimed at the kids, and even others will be things you can do all by yourself. So if you’re trying to come up with some fresh ideas for fun this summer, be sure and read “10 Family-Fun Ideas for Summer ‘22.” Now, as the weather gets hotter, it doesn’t take much to make almost anyone vulnerable to the heat. And when I say “anyone” I would also include pets – they are equally if not more vulnerable to hot temps. Probably the most dangerous place to be in the heat of summer, whether you’re a pet or a human, is inside a closed Continued on page 4

up or even partially closed up car. It is not a safe place to be. We will tell you why and how to remedy the situation as part of the article “Summer Heat Safety Tips.” We will also tell you about water safety. Whether you’re tubing in a river, swimming in the ocean or just out on a boat, knowing how to be safe in and on the water is critically important because water safety is a very serious issue. If you’re on the water and something goes terribly wrong, time won’t be on your side. Be sure and read “Water Safety Tips that Can Save Lives.” And finally, summer reads. 2022 is a banner year in terms of books to read, whether you love suspense, thrillers – legal or otherwise – or romance. Established authors and new authors looking to get into the game are giving you many options. Find out more, plus a few suggestions, in “Summer Reads: From Thrillers to Romance.” We include a look at kids’ books as well. Enjoy the issue and please join us next time when we turn our attention to things “automotive.”: I look forward to that one myself! See you then. News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || JUNE 16, 2022

Celebrating Indian Trail Park Indian Trail Park has always been the family park of Lehigh Township. Decades ago it was an amusement park, complete with a swimming pool and a carousel. Today it is a place where groups gather to celebrate special occasions, play horseshoes, use playground equipment and go fishing. On Saturday, June 25th, between 1:00 and 4:00PM, Lehigh Township Rails to Trails invites you and your family to explore the park in a new way. We will be showcasing the creation of a path

through the woods. In order to do so, we had to remove a lot of trash, smooth out some of the terrain and spread gravel. Along the path you’ll now be able to identify some native trees, as well as invasive plants, look for birds and see our specially created planting areas. Children can look for “caterpillars” and win a prize! They can also do leaf rubbings and paint rocks. An outdoor specialist will be present to help kids of all ages find small organisms that live in Indian Creek. There will be other activities for all ages as well.

Celebrating Dad Continued from page 24

If dad is a true family guy, chilling at home could be just the thing to make his day. Or the entire family can get some exercise with a bike ride on one of dad’s favorite trails. Have a family member or friend scope out the trail ahead of time and choose a spot to have a picnic laid out before you even arrive for a wonderful surprise. If dad is a car guy, pull the family together to help him wash and polish his ride. That of course will work best if Father’s Day is sunny and bright this year. You could follow that with a backyard Summer fun for the whole family! Hiking, events, workshops, and more at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. Trails open every day dawn to dusk. fun (and water). A long-time favorite of kids’ birthday parties, bowling could be a blast for Father’s Day. Get the family together and then split up into teams – parents against kids – and see who has the best form and the best score. Other Ideas Perform a Concert or Dance Number / Nothing will make a dad smile more than seeing his child perform an original song or dance. Plan some rehearsal and if you want to make it really special, add in some lyrics that will let dad know how much he is loved. Take him to see live music / Whether dad loves jazz or country music, finding him a live performance to attend on Father's Day is sure to make him happy. Try out Axe Throwing / If you want to create a truly memorable experience, take dad for a couple of hours of axe throwing. It’s become quite popular. Surprise him with a racecar test-drive / This is a very special idea. Has the dad in your life always dreamed of tearing down a NASCAR track at top speed? You can make that dream a reality by surprising him with a NASCAR racing experience where he can either ride with a trained professional or take to the asphalt all on his own. Whichever experience you land on, it is certain to make a Father’s Day he’ll never forget. Fire Up the Grill / Father’s Day is best celebrated with family and amazing food, so fire up the grill and take the opportunity to learn a thing or two from dad, or simply cheer him on as he serves plate after plate of juicy burgers, grilled veggies and more. Get to Know Dad Better / Even if you think you already have a grasp on everything there is to know about dad, there's so much more to his story. Take a walk down memory lane with him by flipping through his photo albums and school memorabilia and letting him tell you stories based on the pictures. Build a campfire / One way to end his Father's Day on a sweet note is by roasting marshmallows over the fire. As people are eating their s'mores, ask everyone in the circle to share their fondest memory with Dad or Grandpa. It'll make the moment even sweeter. No matter which activities you go with during the day, once you’ve had your fun with dad, be sure and plan a special Father’s Day dinner or dessert. And then maybe finish his day with a movie he loves. JUNE 16, 2022 || townandcountrygazette.com

Water Safety Tips that Can Save Lives Source: Various

During the summer when everything is fun, you have to keep safety in mind and even more so when you are in, on or around water. Whether you’re at the beach, on a boat or on a river, being aware of water safety is extremely important. Always remember that if you are around water and something goes terribly wrong for you or someone you are with, time is not on your side. On the Beach: Rough Surf and Riptides Rough surf created by offshore storms can result in powerful waves tearing into the sand on beaches. The hazard that comes from this is that when you are walking out into the ocean there could be an unexpected and sudden change in the water’s depth. Another beach-related danger comes in the form of a riptide. A riptide is a powerful, narrow channel of fast-moving water that you can encounter along the shore. According to the NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, if you get caught in a riptide along the shore, don’t panic. The best way to survive a rip current is to stay afloat and yell for help. This will allow more time for you to be rescued or ultimately, for you to swim parallel to the shore to escape the rip current and then back to shore once the current eases. Beach Related: Millions of people dig deep holes in the sand when they’re on the beach. The sand on the side is not supported and can collapse, trapping someone under the sand without air. Recreational Boating: Staying Safe ON the Water With more than 11 million recreational vessels registered in the U.S., millions of Americans enjoy time on and in the water. The two key things to focus on before you go out on a boat are life jackets and boating safety training. According to 2017 statistics from the Office of Auxiliary and Boating Safety at Coast Guard Headquarters, 75 percent of fatal boating accident victims drowned and 86 percent of them were not wearing a life jacket. When you wear a life jacket, you need to make sure it is in good working order, correctly sized and correctly fastened. Continued on page 31

Also note that good swimmers still need life jackets. When people fall off a boat, they may become disoriented, injured or unconscious. Life jackets can keep victims’ heads above water so they can breathe and be rescued more easily. Every child should wear a life jacket at all times when boating. According to the NOAA, the most common vessel types involved in reported accidents were open motorboats, personal watercraft, and cabin motorboats. The vessel types with the highest percentage of deaths were open motorboats, kayaks, and pontoons. On the River: Rapids and Rocks Floating down the river in an inner tube or on a raft can be as beautiful as it is fun. Remember that river hazards include rapids and rocks, either of which can unexpectedly put you into the water. Wear your life jacket at all times. Also Keep in Mind • Changes in the weather can create a stormy situation affecting the wind, surf and even visibility.

Was always, it appeared, up. It seemed to the boys It always was empty, And to the one carrying the wood, There was no bottom to it. Of course, in childhood Things look large like a horse; One is indifferent – And possibly a little lazy. So, things went with me – Perhaps it was so with you – One wishes, instead of good looking, One would be terribly rich. Yet I can still remember Pop’s delight on it, Then after his workday He lit his pipe, And laid himself on it, Got a pillow, There behind the stove On that old chest. The wood chest and his corncob pipe, These were dear to pop; Yet I often hatefully wished A thief would come once, And would steal it away – No other one to replace it So, I would then be forever Free of carrying the firewood. Now I am grown And often lay myself on it – Yet I have always found The hard side was up. I cannot figure it out And it bothers me yet today, How pop rested so well When he laid on it. “It must be your joints,” He mentioned once, “Since you sleep on springs, 34

They are not used to boards.” I think this soft living, The way it goes nowadays Makes weakness in the body – Everything is distorted. Yet for me the firewood chest Always sticks in my mind, And brings back thoughts When I am at home. [The firewood chest behind the stove had many important functions in the kitchen. Besides the place to store the wood and kindling for the stove, it was always a place for the husband and children to stay out of mom’s way when she was working in the kitchen and it was also a place to warm up and relax on during winter months. And as this poem suggests, it also created one more chore for boys – carrying in the firewood and kindling to keep it filled. To those growing up and living in that time period it held an important place in their culture.]

Summer Heat Safety Tips

Roofing Installed For as Little as $400 a

SOURCE: OSHA (edited)

Heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States. It results in hundreds of fatalities each year. Heat is very taxing on the body and heat-related illnesses can occur within even a short period of time. In the end, anyone can be vulnerable to heat, but some more so. Read on to learn some summer heat safety tips that could end up saving your life, someone else’s life, or your pet’s life. What Is a Heat Wave? A heat wave is a period of abnormally hot weather generally lasting more than two days. Heat waves can occur with or without high humidity. In addition to pets, the following groups are particularly vulnerable during heat waves: • Young children and infants because their bodies are less able to adapt to heat than the bodies of adults. • Older adults, especially if they have preContinued on page 38

existing conditions, take certain medicines, live alone or have limited mobility. • People with chronic medical conditions who are more likely to have a serious health problem than healthy people in the heat. • Pregnant women for whom extreme heat events have been associated with adverse birth outcomes. Heat Safety in Vehicles Even on mild days in the 70s, studies show temperature inside a parked vehicle can rapidly rise to a dangerous level for children, pets and adults. Leaving the windows slightly open does not significantly decrease the heating rate. A dark dashboard or car seat can quickly reach temperatures in the range of 180°F to over 200°F and heat the air trapped inside the vehicle. It is never safe to leave a child, disabled person or pet locked in a car. Also, if you have a toddler

in your household, lock your cars even in your own driveway. If kids wander outside and get trapped in a car the heat can kill them in 10 minutes. Child-Safety Tips in the Car • Touch a child's safety seat and safety belt before using it to ensure it's not too hot before securing the child. • Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, even with the windows down, even for just a minute. • Teach children not to play in, on, or around cars. They could accidentally trap themselves in a hot vehicle. • Always make sure children have left the car when you reach your destination. Don't leave sleeping infants in the car. Staying Safe in Excessive Heat Outdoor Activities / Reduce, eliminate or reschedule strenuous activities until the coolest time of day. Clothing Always wear lightweight, loose fitting, light-colored clothing to reflect heat and sunlight. Eating and Drinking / Eat light, cool, easy-todigest foods such as fruit or salads. Don't leave food sitting in the sun where it can spoil quickly in the heat. Drink plenty of water (not very cold), nonalcoholic and decaffeinated fluids, even if you don't feel thirsty. If you are on a fluid-restrictive diet or have a problem with fluid retention, consult a physician before increasing fluid consumption. Cooling Down • Use air conditioners or spend time in airconditioned locations such as malls and libraries.

• Use portable electric fans to exhaust hot air from rooms or draw in cooler air. • Do not direct the flow of portable electric fans toward yourself when room temperature is hotter than 90°F. The dry blowing air will dehydrate you faster, endangering your health. • Take a cool bath or shower. Follow the tips in this article to stay cooler and safer in this year’s summer heat.

But with no other clients coming through his door, Leland takes the job to make ends meet. His investigation soon reveals a criminal conspiracy lurking in the shadows of the small town. And as the Jury’s verdict looms closer, it’s not just Simone’s freedom that hangs in the balance. Along the way, Russell and Ari create chemistry of their own, causing a whole new type of storm to develop. 10 Family-Fun Ideas for Summer ‘22 SOURCE: parade.com (edited)

Whether you have everything planned for the summer, or you’re fresh out of ideas for fun things to do, here are 10 activities you can pull from to create real family fun this summer and keep everyone entertained. Note these activities are not all designed as kid activities. As a matter of fact, there are some great ideas for the whole family and some… just for you.

For the Family and Kids Play in the sprinkler. / Whether it’s running through a regular lawn sprinkler or a splash play pad, cooling off in the summer heat can be fun for both kids and parents. Host a backyard Olympics. / Create different events like kickball, relay races, or a pushup competition. This can even be made into a neighborhood “friends and family” competition. Top it off with medals (or ribbons) and a “closing ceremony.” Make at-home popsicles. / The best part about making your own popsicles is that you can use what’s in your fridge. Let the kids pick the flavor, whether they want orange, apple, or even pickle juice. Get some popsicle sticks and small plastic cups to create fun treats to cool down in the summer heat. More for the Kids Make chalk art. / The best summer activities for families are the ones that can be done easily outdoors. This one is a perennial favorite. Have the kids create a mural on the sidewalk or draw

He always knew how to get the family together for fun, games, hobbies or just to relax. The things that shape our appreciation of life, more than likely came from our father figure. On Father’s Day, let him know how appreciated he is.

the world’s longest hopscotch and see who can complete it the fastest. Create a scavenger hunt for the kids. / Leave clues both inside and outside the house to send the kids on a fun, at-home adventure. Stay with them so you can give them hints when they get stumped to keep them engaged. Just for You Go bird watching. / Make it interesting by visiting a local state park or even a bird sanctuary. Bring a pair of binoculars and a bird field guide to keep track of all the species you see. If you’re good at sketching, sketch your favorite bird and hang it on the fridge to showcase your (hidden?) talent. Start a journal. / The benefits here are endless and journal writing can be an everyday summer (or year-round) activity. Write about anything you want, be it poems, stories, or a summary of your day. This can be great for kids too. Learn origami. / This ancient skill is fun to learn. Use an origami kit or create your own from printer paper and an online guide. Other Things to Do Rent an RV and take a family road trip. / Ready to make some amazing family road trip memories

this summer? An RV is the way to do it. You can rent one in just about any size or style. For an additional fee, some RV companies will even dispose of the waste after you drop it off at the end of your trip – a great thing for first-timers. Interview an older relative. / Write a list of questions and ask a family member about their lives. Not only will your kids learn about your family history, but you’ll also give those older relatives an opportunity to share their past. This can become a real memorable moment. No matter what you decide to do day-to-day this summer, have fun!
