some great home addition ideas to tell you about no matter who does the work. Find out more in “Popular Home Additions for Spring.” If putting in a swimming pool is on your “to do” list for 2022, you will find “Putting in a Pool” filled with good information. There is a definite planning process involved with such a project and we give you the steps to take along the way. We also provide information on the different materials to consider for the most important piece of all, the pool lining. Moving from the home to the garden, or perhaps a hike in the woods, we tell you how to avoid getting tick bites this spring in “Ticks in the Garden and Woods.” We will give you information on everything from repellents and clothing, to removing a tick if you find one already attached. Ticks are everywhere in our region, making this a widespread problem that any of us might have to deal with after a day outdoors. We also look at “The Powers of the Tomato.” The tomato has a number of health benefits, not to mention the way it can brighten up a plate. According to Humana.com the tomato is a very “heart-healthy” vegetable and it comes in so many Continued on page 5

Popular Home Additions for Spring

SOURCE: reliablehomeimprov.com (edited)

Springtime is here and it’s time to spring into action and take on all those home remodeling projects you’ve long been waiting to sink your teeth into. Maybe it’s time for replacement windows and new storm doors. Or maybe you want a fully outfitted garage workshop. In spring, many big projects involve home additions, which can bring so much value to your home in numerous ways. Benefits of home additions include more space, a little luxury, and room to do what you love. Spring is the perfect time to get started. If you have a home addition on your mind and are looking for a little design inspiration, here are some top trends you might want to consider. A Room with a View / If you have the opportunity to do so, build facing a view you love and incorporate floor to ceiling windows to make the most of it. Maybe you’re lucky enough to have a river view, a long vista out over mountaintops or a beautiful garden of flowers; if so, take full advantage of the situation. Brightening up a new addition with beautiful big windows is a win-win proposition. 6

Enjoy the Outside from Inside / A sunroom can also help you enjoy your immediate outdoor surroundings. If you’re a devoted gardener, building a sunroom or greenhouse could be the perfect way to combat winter blues by giving you an extension of your growing season. For a sunroom, consider which direction you’d like it to face and how your location and choice of materials will affect temperature and usability year round. Aim High / High vaulted ceilings are very popular for a lofty, grand feel in a room. If you are looking for the luxury of space, nothing helps you achieve that better than vaulted ceilings, which are perfect in new bedrooms and primary living areas. Expand Your Space /A new home addition is all about making new space you didn’t have before. Combine that with an open floorplan and it can also bring different functional areas together within your home. A Suite of Your Own /A master bedroom suite can provide you with luxury and privacy by ensuring you have your own quarters, away from everyone else. Those quarters can include a News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || MARCH 17, 2022

master bedroom and bath suite, a sitting and dressing area, walk-in closets and whatever else takes your fancy.

In conclusion, no matter what you decide to do this year spring is the time to get started on your next home addition.

Putting in a Pool SOURCE: Various

It can be argued that summer days are just better with a swimming pool in your own backyard. If you are considering putting in a pool, there are quite a few things to think about, including the material for your pool liner – more on that below. You will also need to think about the size of the pool you want, as well as its location in your yard and of course “the extras.” According to HomeAdvisor.com, you can expect to spend at least $35,000 on an in-ground pool. One key thing to consider as you think about putting in a pool is whether or not the required equipment can get into your backyard for all the project’s digging, pouring and tiling. If it can, then the process begins. The Process The process of putting in a pool can easily take up to six months start to finish. Be sure your expectations are in line with that. Here are some of the steps: Assemble your team / You can either hire a pool contractor that can do the design and

construction, or you can work with an architect to do the design and get the permit work done where required. You would then hire a pool contractor to build the pool. Understand how you will use the pool / Will you use the pool for laps and exercise, or entertaining? These things and more will dictate your pool design, so think about them before you sit down with your team. oddly-shaped yard stop you. If you need to, consider tweaking the layout of your greenery. Start planning several months in advance / The planning process itself can take a good one to two months. Part of that needs to be the imagining of the pathways and surfacing that will be around the pool itself. Planning for Safety Slipping / It is well-advised to consider non-slip materials around the perimeter of the pool to minimize the potential for accidents.

Fencing / There are plenty of ways to do fencing to keep pets and toddlers away from the area when no adults are around to supervise. You can do anything from hedging to a formal iron gate, or just a good fence that can also enhance privacy. Pool Covers / If your pool is the standard rectangular shape you will have many options in pool covers, including motorized that can eliminate the need for safety fencing. Pool Liner Materials When it comes to the pool liner, materials vary greatly. Depending on the material used, a pool can take a while to cure and set. Gunite, a mixture of cement, sand, and water applied through a pressure hose to produce a dense, hard layer of concrete can take up to 10 days to set, while pure concrete can take up to 28 days. The least expensive liner material, which can still start around $20,000, is vinyl. Next in terms of cost is fiberglass, which is best for families or anyone who hates upkeep. Finally, the most expensive liner material is concrete, but it has unlimited design potential. If you have a pool in your plans for 2022, assemble your team and get started!

Eating Fruits & Veggies SOURCE: Various

Fruits and vegetables are important to good health, but no single fruit or vegetable will supply all the nutrients we need every day. As you plan your garden for 2022, remember that variety is as important as quantity. While we can’t grow citrus in this region we can certainly plan our gardens to include many of the fruit and vegetable categories listed below. From there, we should try to get at least one serving from each of these per day: • Dark green leafy vegetables • Red fruits and vegetables • Yellow or orange fruits and vegetables • Legumes (beans) and peas In our area we are very fortunate to have excellent farm stores and farmers markets. So if you won’t be growing vegetables yourself, or while you wait for your own garden harvest to come in, these stores and markets will have plenty of fruits and

vegetables available, especially as the spring and summer progress. Healthy Snacks If eating on the go is part of your routine or the routine of someone in your household, including a child, make sure you have nutritious fruit and vegetable snacks available that can be taken anywhere. “Grab-and-go” fruits like apples, oranges, bananas and raisins are great to have, as are washed and chopped fresh vegetables like celery, carrots and cucumbers. Other healthy snack ideas include: • Hummus and whole-wheat pitas • Veggies like bell pepper strips and broccoli with a low-fat dip • Baked tortilla chips with black bean and corn salsa • Ready-packed salad greens for a quick salad at any time One way to encourage your child to choose healthy snacks is to store cleaned, cut-up vegetables in the fridge at eye level – and keep a low-fat or fat-free dip nearby as well. Healthy Meal Planning When you are planning meals for yourself or family, remember that vegetables can easily become the star of any meal. Here are a few main dish ideas you might enjoy trying.

Grilled Vegetable Kebabs • Brush Italian dressing on cherry tomatoes, button mushrooms, zucchini slices, red onions and bell peppers • Place onto skewers and grill over medium heat • Turn often until vegetables are tender, about 5 to 8 minutes Fresh Vegetable Soup • Choose vegetables like onions, carrots, green beans and celery • In a large pot, add 1 tablespoon olive oil and chopped vegetables • Sauté until tender, about 3 to 4 minutes • Add 4 cups chicken or vegetable stock, 3 cups water and sliced, peeled potatoes • Season with salt, pepper and parsley • Bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are tender, about 15 minutes We are coming into the fresh fruit and vegetable seasons, perhaps in your very own garden. So be sure to utilize your personal harvest, as well as your farm store and farmer’s market purchases. In 2022, let’s all eat healthy with good amounts of fruits and veggies.

Vegetable Primavera • Choose vegetables such as mushrooms, tomatoes, cauliflower or bell peppers • Chop the vegetables into bite-sized pieces • Cook the vegetables in a skillet on the stovetop until tender, but still crisp • Toss with your favorite pasta and add garlic and basil to taste • Top with low-fat or fat-free Parmesan cheese.

The Powers of the Tomato SOURCE: Humana.com (edited)

The tomato is one of the most popular things to grow in a vegetable garden. There are many varieties to enjoy, including the oldest called “heirloom” tomatoes. Most heirlooms are not “produce-aisle perfect” in their shapes, but they are generally rich in flavor. Well-known heirloom varieties include Brandywine, Mr. Stripey and Cherokee Purple.

According to Humana.com, the tomato is one “heart-healthy” vegetable. As we celebrate the coming start of spring we should incorporate a few tomatoes into our gardens and diet. Not only does the tomato brighten the plate, but it may boost our heart function. You can use the highly versatile tomato in sauces, salsas, soups, juices and purees. They also taste great raw on top of a salad or nestled into a sandwich. Here are a few of the health benefits tomatoes can provide us: Help be heart healthy / Tomatoes contain lycopene, which may help lower our “bad”

cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Lowering these numbers helps lower our chances of heart disease. Help ease constipation / Tomatoes are described as a “laxative fruit,” high in water content and fiber. Eating tomatoes may help our hydration levels and support normal bowel movements. Help protect us against cancer / Tomatoes are a good source of vitamins A, C and E and other antioxidants. Together, these components help stop the creation of free radicals, which can cause cancer. Recipe Spotlight Here is a recipe for Pasta with (Homemade) Marinara Sauce and Grilled Vegetables. Start by ditching the store-bought marinara sauce and create your own. This meal recipe is from the Mayo Clinic’s list of healthy recipes. Ingredients • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided • 10 large fresh tomatoes, peeled and diced • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar • 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic • 2 tablespoons chopped onion • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil or 1 teaspoon dried basil • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 2 red peppers, sliced into chunks • 1 yellow summer squash, sliced lengthwise • 1 zucchini, sliced lengthwise • 1 sweet onion, sliced into 1/4-inch-wide rounds • 8 ounces whole-wheat spaghetti

Directions Start by making the marinara sauce. In a heavy skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add tomatoes, sugar, garlic, chopped onion, basil, oregano and black pepper. Simmer uncovered until the sauce thickens, about 30 minutes. Prepare a hot fire in a charcoal grill or heat a gas grill or broiler. Away from the heat source, lightly coat the grill rack or broiler pan with cooking spray. Position the cooking rack 4 to 6 inches from the heat source. Brush the red peppers, squash, zucchini and sweet onion with the remaining olive oil. Place the vegetables on the grill rack or broiler pan. Grill or broil, turning as needed, until the vegetables are tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the vegetables to a bowl and set aside. Fill a large pot 3/4 full with water and bring to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to the directions on the package. Drain the pasta. Toss pasta with the sauce and grilled vegetables. Serve immediately. 12 Neww 12 New 2 Ne 1Model Model Homes Model Homes s

Ticks in the Garden and Woods SOURCE: Various

As we head into and through spring many of us will be heading outdoors as much as we can and for some that will mean cleaning up the yard and planting a vegetable patch, and for others, hiking in the woods. All these activities increase the odds of us getting a tick bite, which is something we should try to avoid. In this article we’re going to look at how we can avoid tick bites and more. Avoiding the Bite • Use a suitable insect repellent. • Check yourself, your children and your pets after spending time outdoors. • To reduce risk on hikes, stay on trails. If you leave the path, wear long pants tucked into your socks. • Keep grass short in yards and avoid ungroomed areas. If you find ticks, remove them right away. Use force and pinch the tick near its mouth parts, pulling the tick out slowly in a continuous motion. Don’t twist it, which may leave mouth parts embedded in the skin. Tick-borne Disease Different species of ticks are known to be prime carriers of particular diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the tiny black-legged tick, often called the deer tick, is present across much of the eastern United States, as well as all West Coast states. It is a frequent carrier of Lyme disease which, if left untreated, can cause a host of medical complications affecting the heart, joints and nervous system. In general, ticks need to be attached for 24 to 36 hours to transmit disease, which is why checking your body for them after an outing is so important. If you do find an attached tick, the Mayo Clinic recommendation is to remove all of it, including the head, then watch for symptoms one to three weeks after being bitten. Symptoms of tick-borne diseases are most often fevers, body aches and headaches that are not very specific, except for Lyme disease which, in the early stage, can give you the Lyme rash. Using Repellents It is recommended to apply insect repellent containing 30 percent DEET to exposed skin. The repellent permethrin (per METH rin) sprayed on or washed into clothing can also be very effective. According to experts, if you are wearing the treated clothing and you have insect repellent on your skin, the likelihood of being bitten is pretty much gone. This applies not just to ticks, but other biting insects as well.

LENTEN PARISH MISSION

Who doesn’t need hope these days? Queenship of Mary Church wants to help, and that’s why we’re inviting you to our Lenten Parish Mission “Your life WILL be changed forever!” Father Larry Richards, a popular Conference Speaker and pastor from Erie, Pennsylvania, will conduct a four-night mission at Queenship of Mary Church, 1324 Newport Avenue, Northampton, PA 18067. The mission will begin at 6:30pm each evening Monday, April 4 through Thursday, April 7, 2022. There is no cost to attend. A free-will offering will be taken the last night of the mission. The purpose of the mission is to help us grow in our love for God and give us hope and direction in our daily lives. Each night is a different theme: Monday night is centered on God’s Love and Prayer; Tuesday night’s focus is Love of Others (in the context of the Mass); Wednesday night contemplates the Passion of Christ and the Need for Confession (followed by the opportunity for individual confession); and concluding the mission on Thursday night is Adoration and Healing (in the context of Eucharistic Adoration and a Healing Service). Now more than ever, we need to come together to pray for each other and for our troubled world. Please join us for this powerful event and let us be that beacon of hope and light for the world to see! MARCH 17, 2022 || townandcountrygazette.com

In this world everything is intermixed. The good is not piled together and the bad also not. I am always glad when the long cold winter is over, when spring comes, when the cherry trees bloom and the birds sing. But then comes something that spoils that pleasure a little: the housecleaning. That come every spring so regular like the calendar predicts [it]. I would not care about it if I did not need to help. But I must help my wife housecleaning, and that is right away where there is trouble brewing. There is certainly also no way to avoid it. I have already tried everything. The house must

be cleaned. Everything becomes dirty and dusty and must be cleaned here. I have already often wondered why the dirt and dust exists. And the dust comes over everything here, it does not matter how carefully we keep everything. It finds its way into every cupboard, drawer, and chest. Yes, the dust is worse than the thief. I can keep the thief out of my safe, but the dust, certainly not. Well, the house must be cleaned, whether one likes it or not. And the quicker and bolder one goes at it, all the better. Here is a proverb: “Boldly ventured is half won!” The carpet must be pulled up, thrashed and laid down again. That one can still tolerate, but the worst comes afterwards – hammering in the tiny tacks. I would like to know who can do that without clobbering himself a couple of dozen times on the fingers. Here the best man’s patience will be put to the test. Whoever doesn’t cuss with that work, the devil should just let him go. This cursing is however, a sin. I don’t cuss, but – well, I don’t want to say anything here! Next the room-heater must be taken down, blackened and put off to the side. pipe pieces fall out of one another and the soot from the entire winter scatters all over the floor. That brings out that old Adam’s nature pretty close to the top and that spoils all the pleasure of blackening the stove. In fall the room-heater must be set up again and then the stove pipes will nowhere fit together. And as I hammer on it and tinker with it more, all the less it will fit together. That is a new temptation, to express oneself strongly. It takes about a day to clean the tinware. Everything must be cleaned until it shines like silver. There is an old sprinkling can here which has 17 holes [I assume in the bottom, not the spout!] but my wife got it from home and it must be held well in honor. Then there is an old dinner horn [about five feet long used to call farmers to dinner] that is all rusty. I often wanted to throw it away, but every time my wife says, “That I got from home,” and that settles the matter. And here is a bushel basket full of old coffee pots, pans, pie tins and such miscellaneous items, which are certainly worth nothing, but my wife got them from home. And so it goes until one wishes the devil would have it all, this old stuff. Finally, we come to the cellar. Here is a pile of old stuff, which we never used in 10 years and never will in one’s lifetime, but my wife got it from home. Here is a meat-pickling tub, a lot of other tubs, which cannot hold water anymore, three or four wooden tubs to hold sauerkraut, two worn out washing machines, three quilt-frames, two iron soap-kettles which sprung large leaks and could not hold water, and who knows what else. This stuff could become good firewood and one could get a little something for the old iron, but every time it's said, “That I got from home.” I have so often secretly wished to myself that my

wife was also still at home, but I dare not say anything. This house cleaning is hard work, and with it one gets poor daily meals, almost nothing but warmed up left-overs. My wife says she has no time with housecleaning to cook well. But everything comes to an end, so also this housecleaning. I always turn myself to this thought, that there is no housecleaning in heaven. There everything remains clean. The roads are ‘paved’ with gold and we will know nothing of coal dust there. As I understand it, the smoke is at that other place. One thing I am sure of – if I marry again in my lifetime, then I will marry a woman who does not get so much stuff from home. It would be the best if she did get from home, not too many things and a real large amount of money!

In its 38th year nationally and 13th anniversary of the Olympiad at KU, the Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of K-12 science education, creating a passion for learning science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. These goals are accomplished through classroom activities, research, professional development workshops and the encouragement of intramural, district, regional, state, national and international tournaments. The Olympiad is organized by schools at the junior high and senior high levels. Each school sends one team to compete in a variety of events. High school teachers serve as the coaches, judges and coordinators. Olympiad competitions are conducted at four levels- local, regional, state and national. The local competition is designed to prepare students for regional competition. No teams are eliminated in the local competition. At the regional level, the top-ranked teams move on to the state competition. The Pennsylvania Science Olympiad State Tournament will take place Saturday, April 30, at PSU-Altoona.
