Happy May everyone. We are stepping into the year’s fifth month with this issue, if you can believe it. Oh, how time does fly! In this edition we are going to begin by celebrating moms and looking at how in-person Mother’s Day celebrations are back in 2022. But if you happen to be an “empty nest” mom, we have some thoughts specifically for you as well. Find out all the details in “Celebrating Mom in 2022.” Since summer is not that far off now that we’re entering the month of May, the planning for summer adventures can certainly begin now. core pieces will include the tent, a mattress and sleeping bag. We give you guidance on all of that with an initial focus on three types of tents, the family tent, the hiking/backpacking tent and the Quick Pitch tent. We then look at the best type of mattress and sleeping bag to pair with each. Check out “Tent Camping in Comfort” for all the details. And then, when you are finally gathered with friends or family around your campfire, we thought you might like some fresh ideas on camping games and activities designed for grownups – grown-ups who might not have cell service at that particular moment. From “Murder by Winking” to “Would You Rather?” you’ll find our suggestions in “Camping Games & Activities for Grown-Ups.” We hope you enjoy the issue! And we also hope to see you next time when we start with a focus on Memorial Day and its traditions, and then do a “summer preview.” See you then.

Celebrating Mom in 2022 SOURCE: Various
Mother’s Day celebrations “live and in person” are back in 2022. On this Sunday, May 8, let’s celebrate moms in a big way – and don’t forget grandmas, great-grandmas, stepmoms or any other mother figures in your life. Enhance the Day To enhance the day, no matter what else you do for Mom from a special breakfast to a dinner out, there are just so many lovely things you can do. Consider giving mom a lush Mother’s Day bouquet or an herb garden for her kitchen window. Something else you can do that might be even more appropriate and meaningful this year is to create a slide show or video of something she was unable to experience with you in person over the past two years. What a lovely and heartwarming surprise that could be. Creating a Special Breakfast One of the nicest things you can do for a mom on Mother’s Day is create a special breakfast or brunch surprise. Here is a recipe for a “Dutch Baby” skillet pancake (from foodnetwork.com) that is easy to make and guaranteed to “wow” her: Ingredients 2/3 cup whole milk 2 large eggs, at room temperature 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into pieces Confectioners' sugar, for dusting Directions Preheat the oven to 425˚ F. Heat the milk in the microwave or in a small saucepan until warm.

Pour the warm milk into a large bowl and add the eggs, granulated sugar and salt. Whisk until well combined, then add the flour and whisk until the batter is mostly smooth (a few small lumps are OK). Let stand 5 to 10 minutes, then whisk again until airy and very smooth; you should see small bubbles on the surface of the batter. (You can also puree the mixture in a blender.) Meanwhile, put a 10-inch ovenproof skillet in the hot oven and heat for 10 to 15 minutes. Add the butter to the skillet in the oven and heat until the butter melts and the bubbles subside (do not Continued on page 6

let the butter brown). Pour the batter into the skillet. Bake until the pancake rises in a cup shape and is browned around the edges on top and lightly browned on the bottom, 15 to 20 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 325˚ F and continue baking until the bottom is browned and mostly dry, 5 to 10 more minutes. Dust the pancake with confectioners' sugar, drizzle with syrup or top with jam and berries. Serve immediately. Planning It Yourself Now, if you happen to be the mom, should you plan the day yourself? In the minds of some moms, here’s the reality: if you want it done right, do it yourself. Don't do it begrudgingly, but do it so you can ensure your family has the best shot at a wonderful day filled with all the things you love. If your family surprises you with flowers or gifts,
that's a great bonus. If you are an empty nest mom and the kids just aren’t going to be home this Mother's Day, give yourself a pat on the back for your accomplishments as a Mom. Then go celebrate yourself all day long. Explore someplace new or make it a day of selfcare. No matter how you personally spend the day, we hope you have a very Happy Mother’s Day.

Camping for Free in Pennsylvania SOURCE: Various
Free camping is camping overnight in your RV or tent at a location where you do not have to pay. Free camping is sometimes called boondocking, primitive camping, dry camping, and dispersed camping. In Pennsylvania, free camping could be just about anywhere, from riverbanks to mountaintops. Most free campsites are not in developed campgrounds. Free camping areas appeal to some campers simply because they don’t cost money. Others may find additional benefits to a free camp site, including the pleasures of camping without amenities, or the option to camp farther away from other people than you could normally do. Of course for some it is the core remoteness of a free campsite that holds the greatest appeal. Free Camping in PA Here in Pennsylvania you can find free camping statewide.
In the Poconos / The Poconos and the state forests extending from the sprawling reach of the Pocono foothills are full of hiking trails, state parks to explore, and some of the best free camping in the Keystone State. Many of these sites – like those found in the Delaware State Forest and at Moon Lake Recreation Area – seem closer to organized campgrounds at first. Though these sites are free, they do require a camping permit, which is also free. battle of the Civil War. The Gettysburg area offers acres of battlefields and museums to explore, as well as downtown Gettysburg itself. Free camping can also be found within twenty-five minutes of the city limits throughout the Michaux State Forest. These primitive sites require a permit, at no cost, and are spread across the woodlands west of Gettysburg. Near Pittsburgh / Free spots for camping outside of the City of Champions aren’t exactly abundant. That said if you are looking to explore the Three Rivers, its many bridges and the burgeoning local scene that is swapping a Rust Belt history for a green energy and technology future, run an online search for free camping, or “boondocking” near Pittsburgh, PA for the latest free camping information. Across the Northern Stretches / The northern stretches of the Keystone State are full of state and national forestland offering free campsites. This area runs from the Allegheny National Forest in northwestern PA about 100 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, to the "Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania"

officially known as Pine Creek Gorge, a 47-mile gorge carved into the Allegheny Plateau by Pine Creek in northcentral PA. In the national forest itself, spots exist at Millstone Creek near Loleta, PA, as well as along the northern border's Forest Road 160 outside of Warren. Throughout you should expect primitive camping, with a fire ring and picnic table at some of the sites, pit toilets at others, but otherwise bare-bones camping. Throughout the rest of that part of PA, state forest camping can be had in abundance. Elk and Moshannon State Forests are home to numerous sites, though unlike many dispersed camping experiences you may be used to elsewhere, some of these sites may be reserved. Expect little to no cell service across the entire region.

Tent Camping in Comfort
SOURCE: crazycampinggirl.com (edited)
If you are planning to go tent camping, choosing the right tent, sleeping bag and mattress is key for an enjoyable experience and a comfortable night’s sleep. Those three items don’t necessarily need to be purchased at the same time, but you should think of them as a total package. Tip #1: Before making your purchases, think about when and where you will use your new equipment. Tip #2: Even if you purchase online, try to first visit a camping exhibition or showroom to see some of your options in person. Family Tents If you and your family are driving to your campsite you can certainly opt for the best: the family tent. These can include separate bedrooms and even indoor cooking areas. The size and functionality of a family tent make it similar to

staying in a RV or cottage, but at a fraction of the cost. With a family tent the best type of mattress is the inflatable air mattress. It should be six inches or deeper and must be bought with an electric pump to inflate it. To suit the needs of your family, air mattresses can be purchased in double or single widths. Use a nice, warm sleeping bag on top of the air mattress for maximum comfort. A “mummy bag” or a rectangular bag is perfectly suitable. An advantage of a rectangular bag, depending on the manufacturer, is the ability to zip two bags together to make a double sleeping bag. Hiking Tents At the other end of the spectrum from the family tent is the hiking, or backpack tent. These are lightweight pieces of equipment designed specifically for backpacking or remote camping. You want them to be as comfortable to carry as they are to sleep in. When selecting your tent, decide exactly how much space is needed, as well as how much gear you will carry. Many one-person tents are too small to share with an 80-liter hiking pack. That’s why some of the modern hiking tent designs put a vestibule space for storing equipment outside the main tent. In this type of tent camping the sleeping bag and mattress should be kept as light as possible. Single season synthetic sleeping bags are very News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || MAY 5, 2022
lightweight and can be made warmer through the use of a silk or fleece liner. The other way to keep warm is to stay off the ground, so don’t just forego the mattress to save weight. Therm-a-rests are thin inflatable mattresses that roll down to a small size. They are lightweight and sold in various sizes to suit individual needs. Quick Pitch Tents If you are someone who has ever stood in the rain struggling with tent poles, you know assembly time is an essential factor in choosing a tent. This is especially true if it will mainly be used for short camping trips where space and weight are not as important. The best tent option for this is the Quick Pitch, which transforms from an oversized “Frisbee” to a fully erected tent in the blink of an eye. They are slightly more work to pack away, but that is only relative to the ease of their assembly. To keep the Quick Pitch set-up quick, foam mattresses are a fast and comfortable option. Any sleeping bag will do, making the whole assembly very low cost. This is an ideal setup for first-time campers or festival-goers who may not want to spend too much time or effort setting up their camp.

Camping Tips for Beginners SOURCE: rei.com (edited)
The urge to get away and go camping in the woods can seize your imagination at any time. If you are at the beginning of your life as a camper, your secret weapon would be an outdoorsy friend with a campground reservation and a garage full of gear to share. But if you are going it alone and have never done it before, it can all seem a little overwhelming – the gear, where to go, and so forth. Courtesy of rei.com, here’s some valuable information to help you get started. Basic Gear and Camping To get started, you just need a few basic pieces of gear and then you need to decide where you’re going. When going “car camping” for the first time – in other words, not hiking deep into the woods carrying everything on your back, start with an overnight campout and keep it simple: 1. To save money, borrow or rent big-ticket gear. 2. To maximize your comfort, always bring appropriate clothes for cold and rain.
3. To satisfy your fresh-air-fueled hunger, bring plenty of food. 4. To keep your options open, camp close to home. (There’s no shame in bailing if problems arise.) 5. To ensure a good first impression, postpone your campout if the weather forecast is awful. Camping is like staying in a primitive cabin, minus the cabin. So, in addition to your tent, pack as though you’re going to stay someplace where there’s little or no furniture, no electricity, no stove

or refrigerator, and the cupboards are bare. In a developed campground you will have running water and a community bathroom a few hundred yards away. A typical campsite has a table (if not, you’ll want to bring one), a place to park a car and a place to pitch a tent. Some Key “Tips” You can keep your initial investment low if you borrow or rent the priciest items – the tent and your sleeping bags and pads. That said, if you are ready to invest in your very own camping gear, here are a few tips to help you zero in on what to buy.
The tent / If your budget can go a little bigger, then go bigger with your tent: A 3-person tent gives a cozy couple a little extra breathing room, and a family of four can more easily achieve harmony in a 6-person tent. Tip: Practice setting up your tent at home first. Sleeping bag / When selecting your bag, temperature rating is a good place to start. If you’re planning on only going fair-weather camping, a summer bag is probably all you’ll need, but a 3-season bag will give you more leeway for Continued on page 14

Lehigh Township Historical Society News Submitted by Ruth Hall Kent
The Society would like to thank everyone who supported our Finally Spring Basket Social last month. The fundraiser was a great success thanks to the many sponsors who contributed to the event and the attendance was amazing! We have reopened the Historical Centre Museum for Open House visits as of May 1st for the first time since the COVID pandemic. We will be open the first Sunday of each month through September from 1 pm to 4 pm except for June 5th which is Noon to 4 pm. Our next Open House will be held during our BBQ TO GO Take-Out Dinners fundraiser (see our ad in this issue for details). Order forms can be downloaded from our website. We are located at 3811 Lehigh Drive, Northampton, PA (in Pennsville next to Indian Trail Park along Route 248). Come see the old and unique items on display that give you a glimpse into the past and the things our grandparents and ancestors used. Admission is free but donations are welcomed. We also have a scavenger hunt through the museum for young visitors. We are working on plans for an event to hold along with an Open House at St. Paul’s One-Room Schoolhouse later this year. Further details and a date will be forthcoming. If anyone has a suggestion for a program, we’d like to hear from you with ideas! You can contact us through our website: www.lehightownshiphistoricalsociety.org or give us a call at 610-440-0151 and leave a message. Spring Cleaning? Remember that our mission is to preserve the history of the Lehigh Township and we welcome any old or historical items that can be added to our museum collection. Lehigh Township Historical Society is interested in old documents, photos or items you uncover (and no longer want) when cleaning out your house, attic,
basement, garage or outbuildings. Don’t throw things out, even if you think they are not worth keeping. Contact us and we will decide if the articles are worthy of being entered into our archives for future research or display. Items from old local businesses; old political items; farm, household and personal items; books; calendars and newspapers that have been stashed in the back of a drawer or closet may be great things to donate to our museum and share with others for a flashback to the past! All donations to our museum and archives are recorded and acknowledged. If you have items to donate to our collection, stop by during Open House or on a Tuesday morning from 9 to noon. We hope to see you at our next Open House!
Flood Announces State Grant for NCC Construction Project Submitted by Jordan Garrett
Northampton Community College was recently awarded $500,000 in state funding for a construction project that will enrich learning experiences for students, announced Rep. Ann Flood (R-Northampton). Flood played a key role in securing the funding through Pennsylvania’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP). The grant will go toward construction of the East 40 Experiential Learning Center, which will be a resource for all NCC disciplines, including the new Food Studies and Food Science programs. The purpose for this building is to enrich placebased, experiential learning opportunities for NCC students and the wider community with hands-on examples and projects.

Camping Games & Activities for GrownUps SOURCE: Various
Just because you are all grown up doesn’t mean you’re too old for camping games and activities. Here are a few camping games and activities designed for adults that prove spending time without cellphone service doesn’t have to feel like the end of the world. Murder by Winking This is great to play around the campfire because the dancing shadows can make it very interesting. Here’s how it works: Everyone stands around the campfire and one
18
person is designated by the group as the neutral leader. All others around the campfire close their eyes while the lead person walks around the circle and chooses the murderer by tapping that person on the head. Once the selection is made, everyone Continued on page 20

opens their eyes and campfire conversation continues as normal. Then, if the murderer winks at you, you die. When you die, you sit down and slump over. If you are still “alive” and witness the murder you can call out the murderer and win the game. However, if you are wrong, you have to sit down and join the rest of the “dead.” The goal is to discover the murderer before they “kill” everyone. Would You Rather? “Would You Rather” is a less complicated game, but it’s classic fun and lets you find out more about your campfire companions. Each player asks a question of the person sitting opposite them. The question can either be serious or frivolous, but it always begins with “would you rather?” For instance, “would you rather have popcorn or creamed corn?” “Would you rather have a unicorn or t-rex?” This is just a fun ice-breaker game to play for a few rounds and find out more about your camp partners. Glow in the Dark Frisbee Glow in the dark Frisbees are made for nights
around the campsite. The only other thing you and your companions need are glow sticks. With the glow sticks around your necks or your wrists, everyone will have the ability to see their fellow campers in the darkness. This game is best played in an open area near your site like a parking lot or a meadow. To see better in a more rugged place, use the red light on your headlamp or even the lights on your car if you can aim them into the area. Be careful not to trip and fall, and be especially careful around the fire. Who am I? Everyone around the campfire chooses someone from real life or fiction. Superheroes, cartoon characters, celebrities, historical characters, and politicians are all fair game. The key is to choose a person or character that others have a good chance of guessing. Then, each person writes down the name of the person – real or fictitious – on a post-it note and places it on the back of another player. That player has no idea who they are, and figuring that out becomes the goal of the game. Players do this by asking others questions to try and guess who they are.

In his poem "Mother's Grave" the poet John Birmelin reminds us what could happen if we don't think to honor Mother: In a deep grave, with its cool walls, There lies Mother in her sweet rest. Everything is still, how heavy gets my heart! Oh, Mother! If only I could tell you How often I regret causing you pain/sorrow. Now you are gone—how empty is the world! Yes, one could certainly rue/regret it if we on Sunday do not think about Mother. But how could something like that happen? Charles C. More can explain that to us in his poem "Mother's Love": One doesn't miss the sunshine Till evening comes; One doesn't miss the bird's song Till the song stops/is silenced; One doesn't miss the rose's scent Till its time is over; One doesn't miss Mother's love Till she lies in the cool grave. Dear people, by no means make the same mistake! One should follow Arthur D. Graeff's advice [From “The Mother’s Song”]: When the apple trees blossom And spring is here; Then Mother's Day comes round again; And we visit Mommy, She is always so happy, Her children are always welcome. In no language is a word That speaks so much meaning As "Mother" to us German people. It always stands for good, For great love and for right. You are first in her heart at all times. Give Mom flowers While she is still living! Let her know that you do not forget! Because one knows that the love That is held in Mother's heart Is in all the great world still the best. Bring your mothers flowers on Sunday, many flowers. And if that is not possible, then send her MAY 5, 2022 || townandcountrygazette.com

McNeill: $320,000 awarded for Trailhead improvement project in Whitehall Township
State Rep. Jeanne McNeill, D-Lehigh, recently announced that a trailhead improvement project in Lehigh County is one of 43 projects aimed at improving transportation alternatives and enhancing mobility and public accessibility across the state to receive funding through the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. “I’m grateful for this investment, and always welcome opportunities allowing money returned to our area. The Ironton Rail Trail is very popular and there’s no doubt that this funding will provide improvements and add needed space for welcoming additional visitors,” said McNeill. The trailhead expansion project will include the following: • doubling the parking area from 36 to 72 spaces. • paving the 72-space parking area. • constructing storm water management improvements including a bioretention rain garden. McNeill said that the program funds projects defined as transportation alternatives, including on- and off-road pedestrian and bicycle facilities, infrastructure projects for improving non-driver access to public transportation and enhanced mobility, community improvement activities, and environmental mitigation, trails that serve a transportation purpose, and safe routes to school projects.

Slatington Lions Club Sponsors a Grant for Northern Lehigh Food Bank The Slatington Lions Club, with the help of Past District Governor Karlene Laub, secured a grant from the Northeast Pennsylvania Lions Service Foundation to purchase three new upright freezers for the Northern Lehigh Food Bank. In addition to a walk-in freezer, the foodbank has 6 upright freezers, three of which are in poor shape. Two must be defrosted on a regular basis and one is 43 years old. On average, the food bank serves 220 adults, 100 children and 160 seniors each month. Last year they served 6427 people. The grant from NEPALSF was for $2907.00 and the Slatington Lions Club made up the difference in price. The Northern Lehigh Foodbank is located at 7884 Center Street, Emerald, PA and serves the residents of the Northern Lehigh School District and/or the members of the churches associated with the Northern Lehigh Pastoral Association. Below is some information about the Northeast Pennsylvania Lions Service Foundation. Mission Statement To end eyesight and hearing impairment in our lifetime through education, grants, and partnerships within our communities. Vision Our vision is to create a world where preventative blindness no longer exists, communities actively and effectively support the impaired in our society, and all hearing and visually-impaired individuals have access to medical professionals and technology that can help them. Values Our values stem from our roots in Lions Clubs across Pennsylvania, where the overarching motto is “We Serve.” Our Foundation promises to passionately serve our communities and always
focus our operations on helping those in need. Whether you’re in need of financial or medical assistance, or you feel passionate about our cause, we invite you to get involved in the Northeast Pennsylvania Lions Service Foundation! Together we can change the world.
From left to right, Past District Governor Karlene Laub, Barbara Scheirer, Director of the Foodbank and Lion Nate Horvath, President, Slatington Lions Club.

Freeman language addressing blight, Homelessness passes House
Legislation that would help communities turn blighted properties into affordable housing options passed the state House of Representatives, according to state Rep. Robert Freeman. “A lack of affordable housing is one of the primary causes of homelessness in Pennsylvania, according to a recent study,” said Freeman, D-Northampton. “In the Lehigh Valley, and communities across the commonwealth, blight has turned troubled properties into liabilities. My proposal is tailored to the unique needs we’re facing in Pennsylvania and would provide a substantive solution.”
