Waterpipe Tobacco Smoking, a dangerous recurring trend among the population

A greater prevalence in women In Lebanon, twice as many men smoke cigarettes as women. However, when it comes to waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS), prevalence is greater for women (0.7 man for 1 woman). Significant taxation on WTS could serve as a contributor to womens’ health.

Cosmopolitan consumption makes tobacco more accessible and socially more common. High taxation brings the reality of the product and its danger back into focus. In 2021 Lebanon’s waterpipe tobacco taxation was 10%, Jordan’s was 21% and Palestine’s 42%. Those numbers are very far from the target of a 75% taxation on WTS and much lower than taxation on cigarettes. Based on the model that has been developed, a substantial tax increase on WTS would lead to a very significant decrease of consumption ( up to 87% of decrease in Lebanon) as well as an important annual tax revenue (up to 673% in Lebanon). A 75% taxation on WTS could reduce consumption up to 87%.
