SUSB long-time administrator and educational leader Tom Rivera, “Dr. Tom” passed peacefully on Tuesday 8th March 2022 surrounded by his family at the age of 82.

Rivera was raised and educated in south Colton. From 1958 to 1960, he was a student at San Bernardino Valley College. He earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in arts from CSU Los Angeles, as well as a doctorate from UCLA. CSU Los Angeles granted him teaching and administrative qualifications, as well as a counseling credential from UC Riverside.

Hundreds of educators, parents to gather to learn about dispute prevention and resolution in special education

M

ore than 600 educators and parents of students with disabilities from throughout California are gathering at the Riverside Dr. Tom on to serve 38 years at California State University, San Bernardino where he served as an administrator, initiating numerous programs designed to motivate underrepresented students to enroll in and graduate from college.

He was also named associate dean emeritus of Undergraduate Studies.

He served on the boards of the Rialto Teachers Association, United Way, Easter Seal Society, Omnitrans, Catholic Charities, and Rolling Start after being elected to the Colton Joint Unified School District Board of Trustees.

He has served on the San Bernardino County Bilingual Task Force, the San Bernardino Valley College EOPS Program, the San Bernardino Drug and Gang Task Force, the Chancellor’s Chicano Advisory Committee at the University of California, Riverside, the Boys, and Girls Club of America, and Sister Cities International Mexicali-Villa Hermosa.

Award been undergoing several improvements this last month, including the roof, which spans approximately 3,500 square feet.

“The roof is about 50 years old, and needed replacing,” reported Pastor Ronnie. However, as Pastor Ronnie explained, “Once the old shingles were removed, the contractors found that all the plywood underlay was deteriorated, and also needed replacement.”

After striking up a conversation with an employee of Squires Lumber, which is just across the street, Pastor Ronnie, was notified that Chris Paxson and Kyle Paxson wanted to help. They graciously offered to donate 90 sheets of new plywood to replace the plywood underlay.

“This is a huge help to our church, and an amazing example of contributing to our community,” says Dr. G, Council Member, Lay Minister at Faithway Fellowship, and well-known community advocate.

With their donation “Faithway Fellowship can continue with its improvements,” says Pastor Ronnie, who added, “This includes the new roof, painting, repair interior damage from roof leaks, the community garden, lighting repair/upgrades, and new turf in front of the church.”

In addition, Squires Lumber Co. has now become an official supporter of this organization, and along with this designation, Chris Paxson and Kyle Paxson are also recognized by Dr. G as a valuable community partner in receiving the CITY TALK “Community Impact Award.”

The purpose of this presentation was to officially recognize their donation and support, not only to Faithway Fellowship Church of the Nazarene, but to the community. “I love to see improvements in our great city,” says Chris Paxson, who added, “I’m honored to help for a great cause.”

For over 75 years Squires Lumber Co. Inc has been an industry leader in lumber sales and service.

According to Kyle Paxson, “We provide lumber products, mill products, and perform concrete formwork for all project sizes.”

Chief Administrative Officer of the East Valley SELPA and Chair of the SELPA Administrators of California Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Committee Dr. Patty Metheny shared the theme of this year’s conference - Committing to Action: Building Partnerships to Advance Student Learning. Dr. Metheny indicated special education administrator leaders planned the event saying, “The action we commit to is to prevent and resolve differences and conflicts in special education by making it happen for each child, every day; by resolving to demonstrate empathy and care for one another; by making our partnerships the strongest they can be.” The parent-school partnership is vital for students with disabilities.

Dr. Metheny quoted former President Barak Obama saying, "Empathy is a quality of character that can change the world. It is learning to stand in someone else’s shoes to see through their eyes.

We will only succeed in that effort if we can encourage the parties to sit down, to listen to each other, and to understand each other’s hopes and each other’s fears.”

The educators gathered to embrace President Obama’s words, to make his words a reality in special education. Those present in partnership included general and special educators from throughout all of California, from its northern most to its southern most points, parents of children with disabilities, and community members supporting the work of educators and parents.

Funding for the event was provided in part from the California legislature via Dispute Prevention and Resolution Funds provided to special education local plan areas and set aside by the Governor for the purpose of supporting member local educational agencies in conducting dispute prevention and voluntary alternative dispute resolution activities to prevent and resolve special education disputes resulting from school disruptions stemming from the COVID-19.

Paxson are to be congratulated not only for their business success with Squires Lumber Co., but for their contribution to the community and generous donation to Faithway Fellowship Church of the Nazarene. “On behalf of Faithway Fellowship, we truly appreciate their contribution, and their support,” says Pastor Ronnie.

The CITY TALK “Community Impact Award” was established in 2020 to recognize the great efforts that people make “behind the scenes” to make our community, the City of Colton, a better place.

Local payrolls exceed pre-pandemic levels; 951,000 jobs in Januar y

S

an Bernardino County’s job market has surged past pre-pandemic levels, with payrolls over 950,000 for the third month in a row, according to an analysis of newly released state numbers.

The California Employment De-

velopment Department reported Friday (March 11) that despite a typical seasonal uptick in the county’s unemployment rate from December to January, payrolls are now 13,000 above where they were in January 2020 – before the COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted the global economy.

Led by continued growth in the region’s supply chain industry and a resurgence in hospitality-related businesses, employers in San Bernardino County have now recovered all of the 130,000 jobs lost during the first two months of the COVID shutdown – plus

some. Beginning in November, county payrolls have hovered about 950,000, according to a revised formula adopted by the state beginning with the January report.

The report also shows that the county’s labor pool has exceeded 1 million for the third month in a row, reaching a record 1,008,800 in January.

“These numbers speak to the strength of San Bernardino County as one of the country’s fastest-growing economic and population centers. We’ve got a supportive business culture and a growing, qualified labor pool – all of which encourages the kind of consistent economic growth we’re seeing,” said Curt Hagman, Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors.

According to the numbers, the unemployment rate in San Bernardino County rose to 5.7% during January – a fairly typical increase following the holiday surge. Even so, the county’s rate remains below the state average

The tournament returns once again to its multiple city/regions and is ready to make headlines across the country once again. But what really puts the Madness in March is the upsets. Here is every upset (based on seeding) that I believe you should be looking out for in the round of 64. #1 - 9 Memphis Over 8 Boise State There is no doubt Memphis has the talent needed to make a run in the tournament. Penny Hardaway has struggled to find consistency from his team all year long. However, I think they’ve hit a bit of a stride and will take down the 8 seed in this matchup. #2 - Winner of Rutgers/Notre Dame vs Alabama Alabama is notorious for having stretches where they can’t do anything right. That is not what you want from a tournament team.

Rutgers & Notre Dame are 2 teams some think should not even be in the first four, but the winner of their matchup will prove everyone wrong. #3 - Winner of Wyoming/Indi-

ana vs 5 Saint Mary’s High seeded mid majors typically don’t fare well in March madness, and I expect SM to carry on that trend. I expect an Indiana team that almost took down Iowa this past week to beat Wyoming & beat SM to advance to the round of 32 #4 - 11 V-Tech vs 6 Texas Virginia Tech went on an impressive run during their conference tournament, and were able to get into the big dance. Red hot teams are the ones you want in March Madness, and I expect VTech to continue to be one of those teams. #5 - 10 San Francisco vs 7 Murray State I can not express my distaste of these two teams playing each other in round 1. They both should’ve been able to make their own Cinderella runs, but I guess one will do. Expect San Francisco to not only win this game but also beat Kentucky in round 2 and make the sweet 16 #6 - 11 Michigan vs 6 Colorado State

Hunter Dickinson will put on a master class and move on a thought to he shaky team in Michigan to round 2, where they could make a Cinderella run. #7 - 10 Loyola Chicago vs 7 Ohio State This is probably the worst LC team compared to the other 2 that won multiple games in the tournament, but they’re still experienced and can pull off this upset. It’s that Sister Jean magic. #8 - 13 South Dakota State vs 4 Providence SDSU shoots the absolute lights out of the gym. They lead the nation in 3 point shooting. If they get hot, it is over for Providence, who I do not believe is that impressive in the first place as a 4 seed.

There is some bracketology for you from me. There are a lot of possible Cinderella teams that could emerge and this month is going to be a lot of fun. Also, good luck to my team, the USC Trojans, as they look to make another wild run to the elite 8 and beyond.

Topgolf opens first Souther n Califor nia location in Ontario owned land at the southeast corner of Fourth Street and Archibald Avenue as a golf attraction more than five years ago. That led the County’s Real Estate Services Department to make contact with Topgolf.

will create approximately 400 private-sector jobs, $625,000 in annual revenue to County Regional Parks, and an additional recreational opportunity for families and businesses throughout the county and the region.

“Topgolf will be an outstanding entertainment asset that will attract people from all over South-

ern California to San Bernardino County,” Board of Supervisors Chairman Curt Hagman said this morning as Topgolf Ontario opened its doors to the public.

Hagman, whose Fourth District includes the Topgolf site adjacent to Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park in Ontario, developed the idea to use 13.7 acres of County-
