t the recent Colton City Council meeting, Council Member Dr. G (Dr. Luis S Gonzalez) presented Good Price Restaurant Supplies with a “business focus” recognition award for its success in the City of Colton. County continues to monitor COVID-19; repor ts no local cases

T

he San Bernardino County Department of Public Health (DPH) continues to work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to respond to reports of coronavirus (COVID-19) as it is quickly evolving. No cases have been reported in San Bernardino County.

As of March 9, 2020, there are a total of 114 positive cases and one death in California; 24 cases are from repatriation flights. The other 90 confirmed cases include 37 that are travel related, 23 due to person-to-person, 14 community acquired and 16 from unknown sources.

Although Governor Newsom declared a State of Emergency to help the state prepare for broader spread of COVID-19, the health risk from

COVID-19 to the general public in San Bernardino County remains low at this time.

As with any virus, especially during the cold and flu season, there are a number of steps you can take to protect your health and those around you: · Avoid close contact with people who are sick. · Wash hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. · Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth, especially with unwashed hands. · Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and sur-

faces using regular household cleaning spray or wipes. · If someone does become sick with respiratory symptoms like fever and cough, they should stay away from work, school or other people to avoid spreading illness and seek assistance from their healthcare provider if symptoms become severe. · N95 masks are not recommended outside a healthcare setting. Surgical masks can be worn by sick individuals to reduce the likelihood of spreading germs to others.

Supplies war conflict at home. They were looking for a chance to raise their family in a safer environment, and found a place to live in Los Angeles. George took in stride the challenges of coming to a new country, and was soon hired on as an employee at the Dish Factory, in Los Angeles. Soon, the company expanded by opening a store in Colton, and George was assigned for transfer to the new location.

After working for the company 4-5 years, George decided to separate from the company and open up his own restaurant supply busi-

ness. Reminiscing about this move, George stated with a huge grin, “I found just the perfect place…Valley Blvd. in downtown Colton.” In 1995, Good Price Restaurant Supplies, opened their doors and have been a successful mainstay in the business community and continues to shine as one of Colton’s amazing success stories.

George Hernandez and his entire family, are to be congratulated for their business success and continued contribution to the business community in the City of Colton.

he fear pandemic about the coronavirus is driving market sell-offs, stockpiling of provisions and other doomsday-ishere behaviors around the globe.

During mass hysterias, the human mind goes on witch hunts for information that fits the narrative. At a time when sanity and sanitation masks are in short supply, here are some statistics that don’t fit the apocalyptic mainstream media narrative.

This flu is a strain of a virus similar to the seasonal flu, and like SARS and swine flu before it, has been given a name. Every year, tens of thousands of people die of that season’s generic flu.

In the 2017-2018 flu season, in America alone, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 61,000 people died of the flu. But because that flu didn’t have a special name, no one other than individuals close to those who died from the flu knows or cares about any no-name flu.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the swine flu infected approximately 61 million Americans, of whom 12,269 died. To put that into perspective, also according to the agency, the next season’s flu, that of 2010-2011, killed about 37,000 Americans; and as noted, in 20172018, 61,000 died (the agency’s upper figure was 95,000).

What’s causing this mass hysteria?

It’s new, and the media’s incessant reporting of virtually every new diagnosis of the coronavirus 24/7, without bothering to mention that being ‘infected’ is, for almost everyone, not remotely life-threatening.

Keep in mind that just last year 34,000 people died of the flu; there are approximately 95,841 cases of COVID-19 worldwide that have resulted in 3,285 deaths thus far. In the U.S., as of Tuesday, there are

So, we spend time second guessing and regretting.

A lot of us who spend 30 years in a career find comfort and enjoyment in staying with some aspect of what we know as long as possible. Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Tony Bennett keep on singing.

he could. School teachers often sub or even continue on for years into retirement. Carpenters, plumbers and ministers stay in some form of their work often into their eighties. A business friend is still building hotels into his eighties. It's common for us to continue what we enjoy or what we know how to do. Thus, making a life or career transition is normally not easy unless a person is sick and tired of something and ready to move forward. When a person reaches this state of mind then there is eagerness to learn and go forward with a change.

A lot happens to us that we never emotionally ever really heal from or move on from. Often times we go through the motions of going forward but that's important. We can't bring people back from the grave. Old life partners move on.

Our Children become adults and have their own lives. The mirror reminds us that life is changing.

Remember this truth. You either turn the chapter or it is turned for you. Make turning the chapter your decision. This applies to your career, retirement, relationships, hobbies, your health, preventive care and everything.

As you turn the chapter, be excited about the new experience and the new opportunity for personal growth, happiness and possibilities.

Wang Family Excellence Award Winner Brian Levin honored at reception

C

al State San Bernardino criminal justice professor and director of the university’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism Brian Levin was honored for his work and winning the 2020 CSU Wang Family Excellence Award at a reception on Feb. 27.

“Brian exemplifies Cal State San Bernardino’s mission to provide valuable and dedicated instruction to our students and in serving our community for the greater good,” said CSUSB Provost Shari McMahan, who hosted the reception.

The Wang Family Excellence Award from the California State University is given annually to the university system’s outstanding faculty members and one outstanding staff member who, through extraordinary commitment and dedication, have distinguished themselves by exemplary contributions and achievements.

Levin was honored in the Outstanding Faculty Scholarship category.

Levin is the fifth CSUSB faculty member to receive a Wang Family Excellence Award, joining Diane Halpern (psychology, 1999), Robert Blackey (history, 2003), Alan L. Smith (geology, 2006) and Stuart Sumida (biology, 2008).

Brian Levin is a criminal justice professor and director of the university’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism.

For more than three decades, Levin has been doing more than just keeping an eye on people who inflict some of the worst harm humans wreak on each other. He takes his original and collaborative trend analysis to Congress, the U.S. Supreme Court and U.S. Department of Justice, and also to community stakeholders, because he believes a civil democracy’s market place of ideas should be informed by facts at all levels.

From that perspective, Levin has with repeated accuracy identified trends not only to help law enforcement and policymakers fight hate crimes and other extremist acts, but also to inform the public through independent and timely data. Along the way, he has earned

the reputation for being one of the most knowledgeable and accessible scholars of extremism and remedies to it. He is often called upon by governmental and academic bodies and journalists around the world for his insight and analysis.

Before entering academia in 1996, Levin served as associate director-legal affairs for the Southern Poverty Law Center's Klanwatch/Militia Task Force in Montgomery, Ala., and as a corporate litigator for the law firm of Irell & Manella. He was also a New York City police officer in Harlem and Washington Heights during the 1980s, and received citations for academics and excellent police duty.

ssemblymember Eloise Reyes introduced Assembly Bill 2487 which would establish the California Commission on Human Rights (Commission). The Commission would be tasked with evaluating California’s success and failures in protecting human rights of people living in the state and determine any statutory, budgetary or regulatory changes needed to better protect humans rights.

“There is nothing more important than the protection of an individual’s inalienable rights. AB 2487 will create a Commission which will ensure California is doing everything in its power to identify and advise on ways in which we as a state can ensure the protection and promotion of human rights across all sectors of government and society,” said Assemblymember Reyes. “The California Commission on Human Rights will serve as a crucial mechanism in identifying some of California’s human rights related problems, and provide feasible and imperative solutions which will ultimately promote the rights of Californians, establishing greater justice and equity for all.”

“California has the 5th largest economy in the world and we lead on international issues like climate change mitigation and animal rights protections, but we have been cited by the United Nations for human rights abuses," said Jes-

sica Bartholow of the Western center on Law and Poverty. "It is time for us to match our rhetoric of building a California for all with actions that recognize and embrace long-held international human rights principles and policies. Establishing the California Commission on Human Rights will help us to do that, which is why we are proud to sponsor and support AB 2487 and to work with Assemblymember Reyes to pass this landmark legislation."

AB 2487 provides that the Commission shall consist of 17 members to be appointed by the State Senate, State Assembly, Attorney General and Governor.

The intent of the Commission is to allow for the adequate exploration and identification of ways in which the State of California can promote the protection of human rights so that residents of California have equal economic, political, and educational opportunity without prejudice or discrimination. The Commission would be created on a foundation that prejudice and discrimination on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, ancestry, place of birth, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, domestic partner status, marital status, disability status, HIV status, weight, height, or socio-economic class infringes on the unalienable human rights of all people.

pring is approaching, which means Easter will be here soon. For many people, Easter is a time for celebration with family. However, some underserved families in San Bernardino County are able to provide very little to celebrate the holiday. With the hope of giving these families an Easter to remember, Project Boon is partnering with Inland Valley Recovery Services (IVRS) once again for their annual FREE Easter event. Project Boon and IVRS partner to support underserved communities and those in recovery by providing a holiday meal, health services, The Easter Bunny, and Easter baskets.

The Annual Easter Event will be on Wednesday March 25, 2020 from 12:00pm-4:00pm at IVRS, located at 939 North D St, San Bernardino, CA 92410. During the event, over 800 residents from local underserved communities will come together for a warm meal, needed resources, and Easter fun!

Colton Museum presents “A Woman’s World: A History of Female Labor in Citrus Packinghouses” with speaker Audrey Maier

n Saturday, March 14, at 2:30 p.m., the Colton Area Museum Association (CAMA) guest speaker program will feature UCR Public History Graduate Student, Audrey Maier. Born in San Bernardino, Maier graduated with a B.A. in Art History from University of California, San Diego and a M.A. in Public History, from the University of California, Riverside.

Currently, Maier is a Ph.D. candidate in Public History at the University of California, Riverside, and will discuss her research on women’s labor in the citrus industry.

Since much of the citrus packinghouse labor was performed by women, this presentation will focus on the lives and experiences of these women from the 1980’s to today. Maier will examine not just how these women worked, but also how they built homes and communities in Southern California.
