n Wednesday, April 13, Council Member Dr. G (Dr. Luis S González) presented the CITY TALK “Employee Spotlight” award to recognize Edward Pedroza, a 15year employee of the City of Colton Community Services Department.

Mr. Edward is a home-grown employee in that he was raised in and around Colton, including the library. His mother was the head librarian at the Luque Center, and she would bring young Edward to work while he was enrolled in the pre-school program. He later attended Colton Junior High School and Colton High School.

n Monday morning, Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. hosted his first “College and Career Day” for over 200 high school seniors that are a part of San Bernardino, Rialto, and Colton Joint Unified School Districts. The event took place at the Workforce Inland Center in San Bernardino and was meant to assist high school seniors explore their options after high school.

The event had over 20 vendors that had informative and interactive information regarding both jobs and college education opportunities after high school, for stu-

dents who were interested in either. They were taught how to create a strong resume, how to dress for an interview, and even explore various jobs with our County Fire, Police, and EMT departments and dozens of other workforce departments and explore post-secondary opportunities.

“Not every student knows what their future is going to look like after high school. Not everyone has a set plan and that is okay. But to sit and have no plan is what is not okay. Opportunities for personal growth in our community, especially in our youth are endless. I hosted this event because I

wanted the students in our district to know there are opportunities out there for them no matter what they choose to do. Success after high school is possible for these young adults and all they must do is work hard and set their minds to any goal that they want to personally achieve. This event opened doors for lots of students in our district and let them know that our County is always right behind them every step of the way. We couldn’t have done it without all the vendors who came out to spread the word, so I thank you all for coming out to support our students and their future.” -Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr.

Pedroza It was a natural progression to attend a local college at first, San Bernardino Valley College, but made the decision early on to become an English teacher. He then earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies at Cal-State University at San Bernardino.

“My goal was to be a teacher and work with students at the high school level,” reflected Pedroza.

When hiring opportunities were not available, Mr. Edward circled back to his library roots and found employment at Riverside Public Library, where he worked as a Literacy Coordinator for 6 ½ years. After that time, a position in Colton opened, and Mr. Edward circled back once again to apply with the opportunity to “return home.” He was then hired as Literacy Program Coordinator at the Luque Library, until the huge reduction in force situation cause him to be laid off.

Undeterred by his love for Colton, Mr. Edward remained close and was rehired by the City shortly after as the Library Supervisor, and in 2020, became the Library Manager. His duties include overseeing the full operations at both the Main Library and the Luque Center, as well as overseeing the Adult Literacy Program,

r. Albert R. Negrete Jr. (Vetito), a resident of Loma Linda, age 68, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 10, 2022 surrounded by family. Albert was also a resident of Colton and Rialto.

Albert worked for Union Pacific Railroad formerly Southern Pacific Railroad for 25 years. At the time Albert was one of the youngest Yard Masters. He was also a member of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) #056.

Preceded in death are his parents,

Albert Sr. and Vera Negrete. Albert is survived by his loving companion Lucy Chavez, siblings Janet (Joe) Donohue, Sandra (Mike) Warner, Armando (Lynette) Negrete, Joaquin (Lisa) Negrete and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

He’ll always be remembered as a loving companion, son, brother, cousin, uncle and friend.

When asked about his career path, Mr. Edward reflected, “Even though I wanted to be a teacher, I find myself teaching kids and adults every day in this line of work,” and went on to further explain, “many people, young and old, come into the library and often need assistance, information, or even some tutoring.”

As the full-time Library Manager, Mr. Edward oversees 9 parttime employees, who love working for him, and have stayed on-staff long-term because the working conditions are so enjoyable. “He is a great boss, and even a better friend,” says staff member Lisa Sandoval, while Julia Arriola added, “He always asks our opinion, and treats us equally.”

“We are certainly proud to recognize all of our employees in the City of Colton,” smiles Dr. G, and continued, “However, time and opportunity are limited, so an

“employee spotlight” allows us to recognize the individual efforts of employees who really stand out for their dedication, hard work, and long-standing service to our various departments, and the community.” We sure have great employees who work hard and care about our city. They do what needs to be done, and care about our city. Thank you Mr. Edward Pedroza for your dedication and hard work, and congratulations on this award.

SB County’s unemployment rate drops to prepandemic levels

S

an Bernardino County’s unemployment rate dropped to pre-pandemic levels in March, as payrolls increased by nearly 10,000 during the month to a record 976,000, the County’s Workforce Development Board reported Friday.

Newly released data from the California Employment Development Department showed unemployment dropping to 4.3% in March, the lowest level since February 2020 and down from 5% in February. Led by continued growth in the region’s supply chain industry and a resurgence in hospitality-related businesses, payrolls across the County are now 24,000 above where they were before the COVID-19 lock-

down – one of the strongest recovery rates in California.

Meanwhile, the total number of eligible workers also reached alltime high – 1.02 million. The labor pool in San Bernardino County has now exceeded 1 million five months in a row.

“These numbers continue to underscore the strength of our labor force here in San Bernardino County as we fortify our role as one of the fastest-growing economic and population centers in the United States,” said Curt Hagman, Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors.

The surge in payrolls and labor force align with recent studies that

have shown a dramatic migration of residents from Los Angeles and Orange counties into the Inland Empire. Newly released Census data show the IE recording the fifth fastest population growth among metro areas in the U.S. during the 12 months ending July 31, 2021.

“Families and young professionals are coming to San Bernardino County in record numbers to pursue career opportunities and enjoy a quality of life they can’t get elsewhere. All of this great news for employers and the regional economy as we build on this remarkable period of growth for our County,” said Phil Cothran, Chairman of the San Bernardino County Workforce Development

Caden Center The NBA needs to fix its playoffs scheduling

T

he NBA playoffs are in full swing, and fans like myself are now treated to the highest level of basketball every night. But, dare I say, almost too many nights? I know in a past article I wrote about how the NBA needs to fix all star weekend, and now I am here to fix the playoff scheduling. Specifically, how rounds can last up to 2 weeks, and why that should not happen, and how the NBA can fix it.

In the NBA, every playoff series is a best of 7. I have no particular problem with this. But what I do have a problem with, is how long it takes to get those possible 7 games done. For example, let’s take the Nets-Bucks series. Game 1 on Easter afternoon saw Jayson Tatum hit a crazy buzzer beating layup to win the game for Boston.

Normally, if a team had 2 games in a row at home in the regular season, they’d either have a back to back or have a single night off before playing the next day. The gap between game 1 & 2 in this series? 2 days. Why is it 2 days?

There is no travel needed, you

cannot argue strategy because a couple other series only get one day. It doesn’t make sense, the gap simply kills some of the buzz surrounding the series. The only argument to be made, for the first round at least, is that they don’t want multiple games going on at the same time, or they don’t want to start games too early to the point where west coast viewers can’t watch. But, in the first round, that’s not the worst thing.

It’s not like it’s the conference finals and there’s only 2 series and their game times are both colliding.

Having 4 series in 2 or 3 different time slots each day can work fine because, after all, the chances one game is a blowout and not entertaining is high this early in the playoffs. You might as well have 2 at the same time and hope one is better. Or, like March Madness, just start the games something simple like 10-20 minutes apart.

That way they won’t both end at the same time. The NBA had it perfect during the 2020 playoffs in the Orlando bubble. Teams would play every other day, the entire playoffs. The only way a team

wouldn’t play at this rate is if they were waiting for their next opponent, which obviously will happen. This way, in the bubble, the max we ever had a 7 game series go was 13-14 days. Under the current format, a 7 game series could last over 15 days. That’s simply just too long. Or even a sweep, a 4 game series, could last 9+ days.

Who wants to watch a week and a half of a 1 seed dominating an 8 seed? Probably only fans of the team that’s winning.

So, the solution is simple. Make games every other day in the postseason. The only exception I could possibly see is if teams have a long travel distance between them, and need a travel day plus an off/practice day. If that does occur, simply have 2 games at the same location be played on back to back nights. It is a solution worth trying, and one that I imagine many loved during the bubble. The NBA has always seemed to look for ways to entertain, and this is the next step to make the NBA playoffs entertaining, while not having a single round of an entire playoffs last over half a month.
