Colton gets beautified once more with second mural

olton residents should brace themselves and get excited as a brand new mural is being created underneath the overpass on 9th Street, just south of Starbucks.

Artist Eliseo Silva has been hard at work sketching the mural, and this week residents may have noticed an array of colors that have been added to the sketches.

San Manuel celebrates 35 years of continued growth, prepares to hire a thousand more

an Manuel Band of Mission Indians is continuing its hiring push as it prepares to open phase one of its casino expansion project on July 24th. This date is significant as it is also the 35th anniversary of San Manuel Casino. The opening of phase one includes a larger gaming space, a 24-hour restaurant, a high-end dining venue, and new retail shops. The casino expansion includes an additional 1300 slots making it the most slot machines under one roof on the west coast. Later this year, San Manuel will open its first on-site hotel, featuring 432 luxury rooms and suites, premium dining venues, and a best-in-class event venue.

“The forthcoming mural is a pictorial of our history and it brings a sense of pride to us residents.

As San Manuel Casino celebrates its 35th anniversary, it has a fascinating story to tell about the long-term commitment of its team members. More than 40 percent of its staff has been with San Manuel for more than five years, and five team members have worked with the enterprise since the opening of the bingo hall doors 35 years ago. Each of the five has taken a unique path, and all have found value in being part of the San Manuel family.

“I remember sitting in the building when the tables were still being bolted into the floor, and the ceiling hadn’t been put in.

There were about 100 employees talking about how San Manuel was going to be the biggest bingo hall and that we had a great opportunity for something that was new to the community,” said Dianna Scina, Director of Experiential Marketing and 35-year veteran employee.

San Manuel Casino first opened as a bingo hall on July 24, 1986.

In 1994, the bingo hall expanded into a 100,000 square foot casino that featured slot machines and card games. The 2021 expansion will see the addition of two brand-new floors of expanded gaming space featuring 1300 slot machines, 40 more table games, a new high-limit gaming room area, three luxury retail stores, two upscale dining options, and a 17-floor hotel tower.

n response to community outcry against significant funding reductions to KVCR, the San Bernardino Community College District Trustees reached out to their state representatives for assistance. The State Legislature came through to save this icon of the Inland Empire.

With the passage of AB 132, a state budget trailer bill dedicated to education funding, KVCR, the broadcast arm of SBCCD, will continue as the only Inland Empire operated public media outlet.

Earlier this year, Majority Leader Eloise Reyes (D-San Bernardino), Assemblymember James Ramos (D-Highland) and Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez (D-Chino) sent a letter to the Assembly Budget Committee requesting funding that would continue the operations of KVCR. Due to the fiscal challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic that impacted California’s community colleges, KVCR was at risk of funding cuts that would have resulted in the loss of flagship programs that serve the largest audiences and heavily incorporate local reporting, such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered, as well as PBS Kids.

enator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh (R-Yucaipa) announced that the Governor has signed into law Senate Bill 657, which will assist businesses in being able to better communicate with their employees who are working from home. SB 657 allows businesses with employees working from home or telecommuting to send specific employment-related documents electronically, in addition to having those notices at the place of business.

“The pandemic has shifted the workplace for many, and in this new business climate, many businesses are trying to find new and innovative ways to provide the same services and share the same information with their employees as they did before the pandemic,” said Senator Ochoa Bogh. “I thank the Governor for signing my bill into law, which will modernize communication methods between employers and employees. SB 657 allows information to be sent electronically, ensuring employees who are working from home or teleworking continue to receive the same information that

they would have in the workplace, in addition to the current postings.”

tive American content provider for the Inland Empire. KVCR-FM is an important part of a key statewide public radio consortium that collaborates to provide timely and relevant news coverage of events and major stories that affect California residents across the state. Crafton Hills College to add Cross C o u n t r y Te a m s

he rolling hills around Crafton Hills College (CHC) in Yucaipa will soon transform into the field of play for new cross-country teams that will compete in the California Community College District Athletic Association.

Josh Estrada, 29, is the new head coach for the sport that will express the spirit of the school mascot: Ryker the Roadrunner.

“This is a brand-new team,” he said. “We are recruiting both women and men and we are starting from ground zero.”

Estrada will spend the next year recruiting and training a team to prepare for competition in August 2022. Cross Country will be the third competitive sport for CHC, along with swimming and water polo.

The Redlands native said he is already starting to get calls from

high school coaches who want to recommend athletes.

“We expect to see an influx of runners who will choose CHC because it is close to their homes,” he said. “This is another opportunity for students to have an outlet to be active and to have a place to belong.”

Estrada knows well what area high school athletes need: he ran two years of cross country at Redlands East Valley High School as a teen.

“I ended up falling in love with it,” he said. "One good thing about the sport is that athletes can set individual records in addition to team records. So even runners in new programs can stand out quickly in the regional and state rankings."

He earned his bachelor’s degrees in kinesiology and psychology together, in an effort to better under-

stand motivation and competition in sports. Estrada has 12 years of coaching in local running clubs, and is already well-acquainted with some of the athletes he will be training. Most recently he was the cross-country coach at Hillcrest High School in Riverside, Calif. and helped to build their program from scratch.

Estrada is not new to CHC -- he has been working with CHC's Fire Academy program and assisting with the students' physical conditioning. When it was time to hire

“It’s a huge passion and I’ve seen a lot of success in my methodology of coaching,” he said. “It's so rewarding to see students develop into something more than they themselves were able to perceive. It starts with helping them see their own potential and how far they can go, not only in sports but in scholastics or in another personal goal.”

Estrada described coaching as a career that fell into his lap rather than one he had to chase. He thought Hillcrest just wanted to consult with him about building a cross country team. When he ar-

Boss’d Up Barber/Salon building through family

Boss’d Up Barber/Salon is owned by Jeff and Loana Thomas and has two locations in Highland.

hen looking for a barber or stylist, it can be difficult. At Boss’d Up Hair Salon and Barbershop they have someone for every type of style. Boss’d Up is a multi-cultural barber/hair salon, owned by Jeff and Loana Thomas.

“My goal out of school was to eventually own my own shop.

Seeing how the business was ran and after ten years of working for another shop owner, I felt it was my time to go out on my own,” shared Jeff.

Their two locations in Highland are at 27000 Baseline St suite A and B, for the salon. 7251 Boulder Ave., for their barbershop.

Boss’d Up Hair Salon opened in July 2018 and they have been going strong since. Boss’d Up Barbershop opened February 2020 and has had quite the obstacles since opening, thanks to the pandemic.

“For me, I wanted to ensure my customers were safe and felt safe,” shared co-owner Jeff.

“We’ve made sure all of our barbers and clients wore masks when coming in. We constantly sanitized our equipment and furniture as well.”

Jeff has been a barber for 10 years, seeing how to run the business inspired him to venture out

When visiting both Boss’d Up locations the first thing one notices is the atmosphere. Family is the first thing that comes to mind.

Kids playing or watching TV while their parents are getting their hair done. Family is embraced by Jeff and Loana.

“This is a place where families are welcomed and embraced,” said Jeff. “Here, kids can be themselves, they can run around or watch TV. We’re going to get video games here soon as well.”

At the shop, you can regularly see Jeff with his kids, watching TV or playing around.

“Family is important, I want our shops to be a place where families feel comfortable and can all get their haircuts here,” expressed Jeff.

“I worked with Jeff prior to coming to Boss’d Up. What drew me here was Jeff, he makes you feel like family and that goes for everyone,” shared Mark Fuentes, Barber at Boss’d Up Barbershop.

Jeff and Loana Thomas want to inspire, build, and lead barbers and stylists to be all they can be.

“When I got out of prison in 2010, I made a decision to better myself. Now, I want to be an example for people, that with dedication and hard work you can succeed,” shared Jeff. “You can’t doubt yourself, I’m looking for barbers that want to learn and improve themselves.”
