uring the regular Colton City Council meeting on Tuesday, July 20, the issue of illegal fireworks was discussed after Councilman David Toro presented a sound clip of the ruckus he experienced on the 4th of July at the previous meeting. Toro suggested banning Safe and Sane fireworks may act as a deterrent to illegal ones. “Coming through La Loma Hills, going through Grand Terrace, the Reche Canyon area where it is illegal to have Safe and Sane it seemed to have deterred, in my mind, others from using illegal fireworks,” Toro said, acknowledging that other cities may not have seen a similar decrease in illegal fireworks. Toro noted the considerable Fireworks, cont. on next pg.

Following a dynamic discussion over strategies of mitigating the use of illegal fireworks in the city, it was agreed unanimously that Safe and Sane fireworks will continue to be sold to continue to benefit nonprofits and youth leagues that rely on the revenue generated by those sales. mong Americans with disabilities, there is a high rate of unemployment and underemployment — something San Bernardino Valley College and the Uniquely Abled Project are working to change.

Fireworks impact it would have on the nonprofit and youth organizations that rely on the sales of Safe and Sane fireworks. “We need to look at both sides of the scale, on one side you have the nonprofits or leagues, Colton is a very sports-oriented city… it’s very important for us to have that for them, but at the same time we need to look at the little boy who died, the houses that caught fire, the guy who blew his hand off, the people who sit in their homes with their chests tightening because they can’t escape the sound, we need to look at helping those people have some sort of relief from the illegal fireworks, and how we help the youth organizations,” Toro remarked.

This August, Valley College will launch a pilot program providing Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinist training to individuals with autism. This first cohort of eight students will receive on-campus instruction and handson work experience using SBVC's state-of-the-art machinist technology, with San Bernardino County Workforce Development Board later providing job placement. The program will be made possible thanks to a $10,000 award from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, $15,000 from the San Bernardino Valley College Foundation, and $10,000 from Goodwill. This $35,000 will cover the cost of a job coach who will assist students enrolled in the program. "We are committed to equity in education and ensuring all students have access to educational opportunities at SBVC that will improve their quality of life," SBVC Foundation Interim Director Mike Layne said. The Uniquely Abled Project's Uniquely Abled Academy Program offers vocational training and job development for highfunctioning adults on the autism spectrum, and has successfully placed more than 90 percent of its graduates with jobs. Using funds provided by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, Goodwill purchased the Uniquely Abled Academy curriculum for SBVC. "The Uniquely Abled Project is delighted to partner with SBVC to extend the benefits of a Uniquely Abled Academy to the manufacturers and uniquely abled individuals of the Inland Empire," Uniquely Abled Project Founder

Councilman Ken Koperski noted that Safe and Sane fireworks are illegal in Yucaipa, yet the city experienced triple the number of illegal fireworks than Colton, and pointed out that the people who suffered injuries or the houses that burned down were a direct result of illegal fireworks. PHOTO

This August, Valley College will launch a pilot program providing Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinist training to individuals with autism. and President Ivan Rosenberg said. "Manufacturers get the skilled CNC operators they need, and individuals with Level 1 autism will have good paying career jobs that will enable them to live productive and fulfilling lives. Our hope is that this will be the first of a number of UAAs in the Inland Empire." Machinist Prof. Miguel Ortiz first learned about the Uniquely Abled Project in 2017, and thought it would be a good avenue for SBVC to explore. A CNC machinist operates equipment that produce parts and tools made from plastic, metal, and other materials. There is a shortage of qualified CNC machinists in the manufacturing sector, and when students complete the Uniquely Abled Academy, they can get matched with jobs paying anywhere from $33,000 to $54,000 annually. "For the individual and the industry, it's a win-win," Ortiz said. "Being a CNC operator is the most prevalent job and easiest way to get into the industry."

The California Department of Rehabilitation will provide participant referrals to SBVC, and before starting the Uniquely Abled Academy Program, students will go through a screening process to ensure this is the right fit for them. Layne said the hope is to have a second, larger cohort start in 2022, and because of the key partnerships with the Department of Rehabilitation, Goodwill, and San Bernardino County Workforce Development, SBVC should be able to "successfully launch, grow, and sustain the project in future years." Jonathan Weldy, chairman of the San Bernardino County Workforce Development Board's Special Populations Committee, said the organization "applauds Valley College, the Uniquely Abled Project, and all of the supporters of this model program that will create great career opportunities for a segment of the population that is often left out. At Workforce Development, we look forward to working with program graduates and our business community in providing job placement services."

Coucnilman Isaac Suchil echoed Koperski’s sentiment, adding that illegal fireworks is the fundamental issue, not Safe and Sane, and suggested reaching out to local Assemblymember and Congressman to bring about legislation to help stem the influx of illegal fireworks into the state. Colton Fire Chief Tim McHargue agreed, “This is bigger than the city of Colton, we have to stop the flow of fireworks into the state of California. We are looking to long-term strategies to defer illegal fireworks. We are working on this, it’s not like we’re just throwing our hands up in the air and we’re victims to these things, we’re going to keep doing these patrols, keep writing citations, hope that the words gets out there and hope that we can make an impact.” Mayor Frank Navarro also agreed that the city should begin talks with elected officials in Sacramento and expressed his concerns over banning Safe and Sane fireworks. “When our families can’t afford to pay for three or four kids, the league will step in and pay so that they all have the opportunity to play sports. Sports builds character, builds sportsmanship, they build confidence, and they also set up a level of integrity at their age,” Mayor Navarro said. “As much as I admire Councilman Toro’s comments regarding the illegal fireworks and the Safe and Sane, if we were to take that opportunity away from our nonprofits and our leagues, I think that we would be hurting our youth more than we would be gaining advantage over the illegal fireworks.” Council reached concensus to leave things as they are and continue to develop strategies to mitigate the use of illegal fireworks in the city. Clinic then celebrate with a gift card to help them with grocery shopping.” Food 4 Less and Foods Co vaccination sites are taking place in the cities of Apple Valley, Bakersfield, Beaumont, Colton, Highland, Los Angeles, Moreno Valley, Riverside, Salinas and San Francisco. The pop-up sites were selected to ensure they would reach high-traffic, highvisibility areas and increase vaccine access in some parts of the state that have experienced lower vaccination rates. All clinics are free and open to the public, along with Food 4 Less and Foods Co employees, and their family members. Walk-up vaccinations will be available at all sites, and some sites may allow for booking an appointment ahead of time by visiting www.myturn.ca.gov “Food 4 Less is committed to the health and safety of our guests, associates and communities, by offering members of the community the ability to receive their COVID-19 vaccine at select locations, said Vanessa Rosales, corporate affairs director, Food 4 Less. “Together, we can help keep communities and workplaces safe.” For more information on the COVID-19 vaccine or help finding appointments, visit VaccinateALL58.com.

Reyes Legislation to ensur e students complete financial

A

aid applications included in state budget package

ssembly Majority Leader Eloise Gómez Reyes’s (D-San Bernardino) bill to make sure that high school seniors complete and submit Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) has been included in AB 132 the Education Budget Trailer Bill that is part of the state budget package. Among its various education funding provisions, AB 132 includes the requirements contained in AB 469 (Reyes) that will enable high school seniors to maximize the funding that may be available for them to attend college or university. According to the National College Access Network, 90% of high school seniors who complete the FAFSA attend college directly from high school, compared to just 55% of those that do not complete FAFSA. A low-income student who wants financial assistance to attend college must complete the FAFSA to access institutional,

state, and federal aid such as grants, work-study jobs, student loans, and critical financial aid resources like the Community College Promise Program. Similarly, the CADAA provides an opportunity for undocumented and nonresident documented students to apply for and receive state aid. “I am so excited to see the contents of AB 469 included in the 2021-22 Budget. By requiring the completion of financial aid applications, California will join states like Louisiana, Tennessee, and Texas, which have already implemented similar statewide policies and have seen their students reap the benefits,” said Assemblymember Reyes. “This bill will change lives for students across the state and open the door to higher education for those who may not have been able to access it without aid.” COVID-19 has exacerbated the inequities students face when applying to college, including completing financial aid forms. According to an Ed Source analy-

sis, California saw an 11% decrease in FAFSA applications and a 45% decrease in CA Dream Act Applications since the outbreak of the pandemic. Many eligible students do not complete a financial aid form because they believe they are ineligible, had no information on how to apply, or thought that the forms were too much work. Unfortunately, a disproportionate number of those who do not complete a financial aid application are low-income students. In 2018, California passed AB 2015 (Reyes) that requires public schools serving students in grade 9-12 to offer information on how to properly complete and submit a FAFSA and CADAA at least once before 12th grade. This bill will build upon AB 2015’s efforts by making sure students not only receive information about FAFSA/CADAA but also ensure all students submit a financial aid form so that they can access critical financial aid resources needed to attend college.

Caden Center Giannis Antetokounmpo is an NBA champion,

T

and it means so much

he 2021 NBA season is over and we have a champion. It is a team we haven’t seen on this stage since 1971 when Lou Alcindor and Oscar Robertson were their leaders, the Milwaukee Bucks. First off, I want to congratulate the entire organization and the players. After their horrific exit last season in the bubble, they picked up Jrue Holiday, got some better role players, and coach Mike Budenholzer finally figured out his rotations. But today I want to talk about the Bucks main man, Giannis Antetokounmpo, A.K.A the Greek Freak. From the streets of Greece to now being a basketball god, allow me to explain how much him being an NBA champion means so much in so many ways. Many people know Giannis’ story. He grew up with his 3 brothers in Greece. He came from a poor family. So poor, in fact, that he and his brother, Thanasis, who also is now a champion, had to sub in and out for each other in games because they only had one good pair of shoes. Coming into Giannis’ draft year little was known about him. He was a near 7-footer that was a raw prospect and would take some time to develop, that’s all we knew. He was selected outside of the lottery and fell into the Bucks hands. Giannis’ rookie year was nothing special. He averaged just under 7 PPG in 77 games while playing behind guys like Brandon Knight, Khris Middleton, OJ Mayo, and Caron Butler. The Bucks and Gi-

annis didn’t really know what position he could play best, so he pretty much played them all, including point guard. Yes, Giannis for a few games was a 6’11” Point Guard. Let me also not forget to mention that his rookie year he sent all his contract money back to Greece for his family. He didn’t have enough for a taxi to the game, so he had a fan take him. But, moving on from that, Giannis showed some flashes in his second year. He averaged 12.7 PPG and even scored 25 in a first round playoff matchup against the Chicago Bulls. But, still, it was nothing special. He looked like a solid role player at best. Fast forward a bit to his fourth season. The Bucks were still trying to find the right coach and Giannis finally broke through. He averaged 23 PPG and helped the Bucks reach the playoffs once again, where they lost to the Raptors. Now going forward a bit more to 2018, and Giannis is now a 2-time all-star. But, he wasn’t done yet. In 2019, Giannis made history. He won the MVP award, the first MVP to be from Greece. However, it wasn’t all good. Giannis started to become notorious around the league for a few things. One, his lack of ability to shoot the 3 and FT’s. And two, him disappearing at times in the biggest moments. In 2019, that showed. The bucks were up 2-0 in the ECF. Two wins away from the finals, before they blew it by losing 4 games in a row. Then, 2020. Giannis makes history again by winning both MVP and DPOY. But, the Miami Heat simply wall up,

force him to shoot, and his 1 seed Bucks lose to the 5 seed Heat in the second round. That offseason, Giannis shocks most NBA fans and signs a 5 year super max with the Bucks. Unlike many other stars, Giannis stayed loyal to his original team and promised to win a championship with them. And as we now know, that gamble paid off. Now here, in 2021, the Bucks are NBA champions, and Giannis is Finals MVP thanks to his multiple 40 point games in the finals. So, that is Giannis Antetokounmpo. Just a kid from a poor family in Greece. He went from a raw prospect, to a role player, to an all star, to an MVP & DPOY, to a champion. All while staying loyal to the city that took him in when he and his family were struggling the most. You won’t see many stories like Giannis’ ever again, so we should appreciate this humble superstar while he’s still here. Don’t think this is the end of the story. A reminder that Giannis is only 26. He won’t be going away anytime soon. Congratulations once again to the Bucks on an incredible season, and I can’t wait to see what they do for an encore. or 98 seasons, the Redlands Bowl has provided free entertainment to the community. Last year due to the pandemic, they had to provide virtual performances. Without restrictions this year, The Redlands Bowl kicked off its 98th season, June 25, in person. With the pandemic causing people to social distance and avoid gathering in large groups, the Redlands Bowl had to quickly pivot; in order to continue to pro-

vide performances they offered virtual performances. “We had to quickly adjust last season, so we made our shows virtual. Not being able to gather in person was tough. To bring the feeling of being together to our virtual performances, we had viewers snap pictures with one and other and send it in,” said Beverly Noerr, Executive Director of the Bowl. “This made us feel as close as we could to our viewers. It was heart warming to see people taking part in our virtual events.”

Opening night this year was June 25. Not being in person last year, made this year’s opening night all that much more special. “It’s amazing to be able to come back in person,” expressed Noerr. “Obviously every show is amazing, however this year’s opening night had so much more meaning. It really did make me emotional seeing people turn out for the event; it made our work more than worth it.” According to Noerr the Redlands

Bowl strives to provide great performances for all. Anchored in Classical Symphony, the Redlands Bowl acts are based on criteria, appealing to all audiences. “We believe that there is music for everybody. We have plenty of different offerings, for any music taste,” explained Noerr. “We strive to provide the best performances for our community. We offer a variety of performances, so viewers can come and experience all types of amazing music,” said

The Redlands Bowl is the longest running music festival where no admission is required in the United States. “We are proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish, not stopping because of the pandemic and now being able to gather again is amazing and we’re all grateful,” expressed Noerr.
