ounded in 2018 through the Dr. Stephanie Palmer Ministries, the KORD ORG (short for Kingdom Outreach Resource and Development Organization) is based in Colton and provides charitable and social services that

create and develop greater humanity. According to Palmer, the Founder-President of KORD ORG, the purpose of the organization is to “meet the needs of those in the community who are disadvantaged in any way. Our purpose is to provide no cost services and goods to them that they may not be able to obtain on their own based on their economic sta-

tus.”

KORD ORG is a short walk up a winding staircase and into a headquarters that oozes peace and tranquility to anyone who comes through the door. Visitors are greeted with a friendly smile from staff members and treated like family. Palmer said each person has complete follow-

through care and listening to each person’s needs and lining up a clear strategy for solving those problems is only the beginning of the process. “I like to find a need and solve that need,” shared Palmer. Services offered at this time KORD, cont. on next pg.

pplications are now being accepted from business, non-profit and government organizations wanting to participate in the Fourth Annual CJUSD College and Career Fair, to be held from 5:307:30 PM Wednesday, Oct. 2 at the Gonzales Community Center, 670 Colton Avenue in Colton. This popular event is a collabo-

rative effort of the Colton Joint Unified School District and City of Colton with sponsorship from the law firm of Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo, Omnitrans, Inland Empire Economic Partnership, and Horace Mann Insurance (Marcos Mata Agency). Businesses, government organizations, and non-profits are invited to participate by sharing career pathway information with students. This is an informational-

only opportunity and no sales of any kind will be allowed. A table and chairs will be provided to all accepted participants at no cost. The fair has become a popular tradition in Colton, with the district’s first three fairs each drawing more than 3,000 attendees. The College and Career Fair features more than 100 booths representing colleges, universities, technical/trade schools and career pathways. In addition, this event

also features workshops on how to pay for college and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Seniors can even begin or complete their FAFSA application at the fair so that they have a head start in the college planning process. Seniors who attend a FAFSA workshop and complete a survey will be entered in a drawing for a college scholarship offered through Cash for College. Younger students will enjoy fun, hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) activities, led by

students in the district’s College and Career Pathway programs and representatives from our elementary schools. Booth space very limited, so those interested are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. A spectacular fireworks display highlighted the community celebration. Birthday ter from the youngest of Colton, and a sense of community seemed to flood the city streets. One exciting update for the KORD ORG staff took place on Tuesday, July 16 through Riverside/San Bernardino County Services. All staff members began training to provide CalFresh, Medi-Cal and CalWORKs Services. When the County offices are overloaded, they will be referring clients to KORD ORG for specialized individual attention. Once the training is complete, people will be able to report to KORD ORG for one-on-one help instead of finding themselves sitting for hours at the County offices. In the seven months they have been serving the public, the KORD ORG staff have changed the lives of many individuals, but they are looking forward to seeing more people come through

their door to get help with their needs. With KORD ORG’s Core Values given as 1) Being Client-Focused, 2) Holding Personal Integrity of Trust and Honesty and 3) Compassion, their work is done with loving concern for all their clients, ensuring they are to be served in a safe, non-judgmental environment. “Our organizational focus is to make a positive difference in the lives of others,” said Palmer. Current needs for the organization include clothing (men’s, women’s, children and infants). They need hygiene products and blankets. The computer lab would provide greater use to the public with additional computers, and they are actively looking for a food bank that will allow them to distribute food to those who are hungry. They also need a new vacuum cleaner, a van or bus to make pick-ups and deliveries, and of course, monetary donations are appreciated to keep this work going strong. Located upstairs at 1076 Santo Antonio Drive, Suite K in Colton; the office is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Their telephone number is 951-446-5550 and their email is Kord8@yahoo.com.

Puddle jumpers a hazard, offer false sense of security confidence, a life-saving skill set, and a lifelong love of water. Relying on the use of puddle jumpers or arm floaties is not a replacement for swimming lessons, and using them as such only hinders a child’s growth and development in and around the water.

Maryjoy Duncan Managing Editor

I’m guilty of having put my kids in puddle jumpers in the swimming pool, as I’m sure many readers out there have done. It wasn’t until recently that I was alerted to the fact that puddle jumpers are dangerous to children. They are categorized as a flotation device, not intended for regular use. It offers non-swimmers, and adults, a false sense of security and ability, with many incidents cited of children jumping into the pool assuming they actually know how to swim. The puddle jumper also holds children in a vertical position - the Drowning Position. Being able to maintain buoyancy, the ability to float on your back, is the number one rule when an issue comes up in the water. It’s imperative a child knows how to successfully get to and hold this position if they fall into the water unexpectedly. Respecting the water and fearing the water are two very different things. Teaching our children from a young age, even infants, the proper skills necessary, and for them to understand their limitations, not only creates strong swimmers, but respectful ones, as well. Enrolling your child in swimming lessons provides them with

Child drownings don’t discriminate. They can affect any one of us at any time. Providing our children with the proper skill set by trained professionals beginning at a young age will give them the tools necessary to survive, and thrive, in the water. ************************ Switching gears, are you looking for something to do this weekend? Panana Night Market will be taking place at Ontario Mills Mall this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The previous event in June drew 31,000 people who went to check out the multicultural food festival that featured over 100 vendors, live performances (fire dancers, children’s performances and local DJs, cultural dances i.e. Pacific Island or Mexican folklore), games, and rides. Some of the food items for the adventurous foodies include hot cheetos asada fries with a side of squid-on-a-skewer, and cotton candy burrito. Entry is $3 and parking is free. The event runs from 4 - 11 p.m. If you can’t make it this weekend, there will be another one August 16 - 19. Remnants of War Intense fighting and hideous attacks battered Afghans throughout their country last week as negotiators in Qatar weighed the benefits and costs of a peace agreement that might stop the bloodshed. In Kabul at least 40 people, including one child, were killed in a complex Taliban attack. Dozens of children whose school was partially collapsed by a massive car bomb were injured. Of these, 21 were hospitalized with serious injuries. New York Times correspondent Mujib Mashal posted (on Twitter) a photo of an elementary school child being carried into the Italian Emergency Surgical Center for Victims of War in Kabul. “Blood on his face, Mashal writes, describing the child. “Still in shock. Still clutching that pencil. The same attack damaged a television station, a government facility and an adjoining private war museum. Operated by OMAR (Organization for Mine Clearance and Afghan Rehabilitation), a group dedicated to the never-ending and often dangerous work of mineclearance and disposal, the war museum houses ordnance and land mines used in Afghanistan during four decades of warfare. In 2012, young Afghan Peace Volunteers took me to see the museum. I recall a small exhibit showing remnants of a United States antipersonnel cluster bomb. The remnants are called bomblets, and each cluster bomb consists of 202 bomblets. They resemble children’s playthings, items that could be stepped on, driven over or picked up by curious children. They are sometimes lethal, sometimes “only inflict hideous wounds. The U.S. dropped 1,228 cluster bombs in Afghanistan between October 2001 and March 2002 alone. The Afghan landscape is now littered by anti-personnel and anti-tank mines which OMAR is striving to remove, where permitted, before more Afghan civilians are killed. Research by the Mine Action Program of Afghanistan indicates, in the first three months of the current year, 130 Afghan boys and girls were casualties of

“ERW: "Explosive Remnants of War." As negotiations inched forward, two Afghan government airstrikes, possibly using United States assistance, hit civilians, killing seven members of a family in the Baghlan province and four civilians in a clinic in Maidan Wardak province. The Taliban, U.S. Government, and every other warring party in Afghanistan must be asked: “How many more civilians, including children, are you willing to kill and maim? The second time I visited the OMAR museum was with my friend Martha Hennessy. We were asked not to take photos, but Martha had already snapped a picture of a carpet carefully woven to illustrate several types of land mines Afghans should watch out for. The carpet was hung on a wall, but actual mines lie in the paths to be traversed by innocent Afghans. On the phone with me discussing the recent Kabul attack, Martha mentioned that carpet and reflected on the terrible carpeting of Afghanistan with barbarous ordnance. Martha now faces up to 20 years in prison for protesting the most barbarous and inhumane weaponry ever invented. Martha, a granddaughter of the Catholic Worker Movement's founder Dorothy Day, is one of seven activists, the "King’s Bay Plowshares 7," whose April 4, 2018 action was in accord with their deeply held beliefs that life is sacred, and must not be taken in war. The U.S. naval base at King’s Bay, Georgia houses nuclear-missile-armed Trident submarines, enough to kill every human on Earth many times over. Entering without permission, they hung banners, displayed crime scene tape and poured their own blood on the base grounds. They protested the U.S. preparations, far exceeding those of any other nation, to commit “omnicide, to carpet the world in in fire, in fallout, in the snows of a deadly "nuclear winter," in ash. For the past 15 months, they’ve awaited trial on charges of con-

spiracy, destruction of property on a naval station, depredation of government property, and trespass. They feel that U.S. readiness for war must be put on trial now, or potentially never. Another of Martha's co-defendants has been a guest, like us, of the Afghan Peace Volunteers. Our friend Carmen Trotta recalls a visit to the Emergency Surgical Center for Victims of War, an Italy-based hospital that treated many victims of the recent Kabul attacks. In 2014 we had visited the hospital to donate blood, and met Jamshaid and Farshaid, young teens who had survived a suicide bomb attack on the United States military base in Bagram. They had been standing outside their school outside the base when the attack happened. Farshaid’s leg had been amputated. Jamshaid had lost much of his vision. We asked Michaela Paschetto, a young Italian nurse, how they were faring. “Today was a bad day for them, she said. “Really, I don’t ask so many questions, she continued. “It becomes too much. “I didn’t know what to say, Carmen recalls. “I honestly couldn’t think of a word to say. Carmen, Martha and each of the Kings Bay Plowshares 7 will have their say, however brief, in a Brunswick County federal court on August 7. Oral arguments will be heard including several motions as well as their belief they opposed the U.S. nuclear arsenal in accord with their religious faith. They have consistently opposed weapons and wars and just as steadfastly served, as members of Dorothy Day's movement, their impoverished neighbors. They understand the wars, the omnicidal weapons awaiting their use at King's Bay, and the suffering of the U.S. poor as, in some sense, all part of a global war on the poor. Depending on whether we resist or acquiesce, grieve or complacently ignore, we ourselves risk becoming the tragic, perpetually dangerous remnants of war. Words to Think About: T he Democratic experiment the Founding Fathers be considered Christian? While there were hundreds of people involved in the American Revolution, those considered the primary Founding Fathers would be Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Monroe and Franklin.

G. W. Abersold, Ph.D.

ever in the annals of recorded history has there been a democratic experiment such as the United States. However, we are not a true Democracy but a Republic. Basically, the difference is that in a Democracy fifty-one percent of the people can put forty-nine percent to death. A Republic protects the rights of the minority. Jon Meacham, editor and historian, has written a book that will become a classic-American Gospel. Of it, one writer says, “At a time when our country seems divided by extremism, American Gospel draws upon history to offer a new perspective on God and politics.” Of particular interest to me is the vast reach of his resource in giving clarity to Christianity in the founding of our nation. Meacham clarifies the misunderstanding that many have about two questions. Number one, was and is, our nation a Christian nation? Two, can

The Founders were influenced by Deism. Meacham says, “It was an Enlightenment vision of religion which held that there was a single creator, God.” Jefferson and Franklin, “Believed this God worked in the world through providence.” Webster’s Dictionary defines Deism as “a belief in the existence of God on the evidence of reason and nature, with rejection of supernatural revelation.” For them, Jesus was a moral teacher-certainly the greatest-but not the Son of God. Meacham says, “The Holy Trinity was seen as an invention of a corrupt church.” John Adams was an avowed Unitarian, and while the others occasionally attended worship, they were not committed Christians. In the idiom of today, they would not be considered “born again.” In 1797, in a treaty with the Muslim nation of Tripoli, the Founders declared, “the government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion.” However, all of the founders af-

firmed faith in the afterlife. Jefferson told John Adams, shortly before his death on July 4, 1826, that they would “ascend in essence to an ecstatic meeting with the friends we have loved and lost and whom we shall still love and never lose again.” Freedom from tyranny and the sanctity of human life were the major concerns of the Founders. They always maintained the right of every person to worship according to their own reason. Separation of State and Church was fundamental. The Founders fought for this policy because of the nature of religion at that time. Religion in the colonies was a sordid affair. Bigotry and intolerance were running amok. Religion has not always been for the betterment of humanity. According to the Old Testament, some ten million men, women and children were slaughtered, supposedly at God’s command. Since the founding of the Muslim faith millions of non-believers have been killed in the name of Allah. Christianity has been violent. Catholicism and Protestantism have both martyred millions of people in the name of Jesus. Extremism was the bitter foe of the Founders of our nation. The Founders advocated moderation. Professed Christians saw life as “their way or the highway.”

Local ser vice clubs collaborate to provide aid to Trona ear thquake victims n Friday, July 12, 2019, Rialto Host Lions Club President Kathy McCraken, along with Inland Counties Legal Services representatives Linda Petite and Pablo Ramirez met with the Colton Woman’s Club to pick up a donation of 400 socks for the Trona Earthquake victims.

Woman’s Club by Bombas.com, will be distributed among families who have been displaced by the earthquakes in the city of Trona, near the epicenter’s city of Ridgecrest. Petite estimated there were about 220 to 300 homes that had been red tagged and deemed unsafe for occupancy in that area. After a visit to the still shaking city last week it became a priority to help those in the disaster area.

The Puritans of Pilgrim tradition were vicious in their denunciation of all who disagreed with them. Catholics, Jews and Protestants were in constant conflict. Jews were referred to as “the deceitful race” by Peter Stuyvesant of New Netherlands. In Massachusetts the case of Anne Hutchinson was a dark item. She was devout but was harassed for heresy. She was expelled and later killed by Indians. She was typical. In Jamestown, they had laws that were severe. Those who failed to attend worship twice daily lost their food supply for a day. A second offense brought a public whipping. A third offense was the gallows. President Ronald Reagan gave a statement as he was leaving the

White House for the last time. “I’d like to say a few final words about immigrants. Those who enter Italy can never be Italians. Those that live in France will never be French. Those that enter Japan can never be Japanese. “But those immigrants that become citizens of the U.S.A. will immediately become Americans.” Truer words were never spoken. A final comment by the Father of our country, George Washington. “We have abundant reason to rejoice that in this land the light of truth and reason has triumphed over the power of bigotry and superstition, and that every person may here worship God according to the dictates of his conscience.” May his words and dream be a reality for today. Amen. Selah. So be it.

ancy Varner, whose cancer-shortened life had such a profound effect upon cancer fighting efforts in the Inland Empire, will be honored by Redlands Community Hospital (RCH) as they name the hospital’s Women’s Health Imaging Center the Nancy Varner Center for Women’s Health. James R. Holmes, President/CEO said that, “We hope that this naming will reflect Nancy’s untiring commitment to promote health excellence for women within the community she loved. Our hope is that Nancy will live on in spirit at the growing center of excellence for cancer treatment.” On July 9, 2019, the hospital Board of Directors voted to name the growing center of excellence for cancer treatment after Varner, who died on June 1, 2019. She was a driving force in elevating the need for treatment and research as she helped to found Inland Women Fighting Cancer with Annie Sellas and Cathy Stockton that in turn collaborated with Stater Bros. Charities to establish the Believe Walk in Redlands. “We’re thrilled to honor such a courageous and generous friend of both Stater Bros. Charities and Redlands Community Hospital,” RCH Board of Directors Chair-

woman Kate Salvesen said. “Nancy was a fighter and it was her fighting spirit that helped launch the first Believe Walk in 2008, which has resulted in numerous Stater Bros. Charities grants supporting our Women’s Health Imaging Center. Those grants have enabled earlier cancer diagnoses and faster treatment for many patients, ultimately saving lives.” Born in Chicago, Nancy married Bruce D. Varner, a successful Riverside attorney and founding partner of Varner & Brandt LLP, in 1975. Through the years she helped her husband raise three sons and a daughter while nurturing a strong desire to serve others After she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2006, Nancy felt called to help other cancer patients within her community. She noticed a disparity between traditional medical treatments and the services available for cancer patients, and that void ignited a passion within her to help other cancer patients obtain wigs, share clinical information, achieve early screening and receive nutritional guidance. To facilitate those services she along with Sellas and Stockton formed the Inland Women Fighting Cancer Committee in 2008. That group, in con-

junction with Stater Bros. Charities, launched the first Believe Walk that same year in hopes of raising money, increasing awareness and establishing services for local cancer patients. Among the recipients of Stater Bros. Charities/Believe Walk grants is RCH, which has received funding every year since 2012. Grants have enabled the Women's Health Imaging Center to acquire two digital mammography units, a high-definition ultrasound system, a cutting-edge linear accelerator, a breast biopsy system and a wirefree breast localization system. In all, the Believe Walk program, thanks in large part to Nancy’s farsightedness, has raised millions of dollars for cancer care. “Nancy understood the important role that fundraising plays in fighting cancer,” said Larry Curti, longtime friend of the Varner family and former Redlands Hospital Foundation Board member. Despite her significant health challenge she forged ahead with bold ideas and a tireless spirit. At RCH, the end result was a Women’s Health Imaging Center that grows in scope and importance every year. We’re so very thankful for Nancy and Bruce and the hospital gratefully attaches her name to this important center.”

he Community Foundation serving Riverside and San Bernardino Counties has opened the Inland Empire Disaster Relief Fund for the collection of financial donations to help residents impacted by the double earthquakes in Trona, CA and surrounding communities. “We’re very concerned about the communities of Trona and Ridgecrest and the devastation we are witnessing in the wake of these back-to-back earthquakes,” said Michelle Decker, President and CEO of The Community Foundation. “These smaller communities

still feel a big impact and we need to make sure urgent needs are met.” Contributions will be used to address the immediate needs of those affected by the earthquakes that struck over the July 4th holiday. The Foundation is working with the County of San Bernardino to identify the nonprofits that can receive funds and assist in clean-up and the provision of emergency services. One hundred percent of contributions will be directed to recovery efforts for those affected by the earthquakes in the Trona area

and surrounding communities. Donations can be made online at https://www.thecommunityfoundation.net/ie-disaster-relief-fundsb. rrowhead United Way partnered with United Ways of California on the statewide release of Struggling to Stay Afloat: The Real Cost Measure in California 2019, a new report on the financial challenges facing working families.

2019 include: • More than one in three California households—over 3.8 million families —do not earn sufficient income to meet basic needs. Of these families, 9 in 10 households have at least one working adult.

"The Real Cost Measure determines what a decent standard of living really costs in California. We find that over 1 in 3 households in California struggle to meet basic living costs, which is roughly three times as many as federal poverty statistics would indicate. The Real Cost Measure provides us the ability to better understand the challenges facing struggling households in our community, and to engage local community partners, civic leaders, the business sector and our elected officials in addressing their everyday hardships” said Doug Rowand, President & CEO of Arrowhead United Way.

• Single Mothers: Over 7 in 10 households led by single mothers in California (74%) fall below the Real Cost Measure.

Some of the key findings from Struggling to Stay Afloat: The Real Cost Measure in California

"We are troubled to see that the rate of households living with incomes below the Real Cost Meas-

• 6 in 10 Young Children Live in Struggling Households. • Housing Burden: Nearly 4 in 10 households in California pay more than 30% of their income on housing. Households living below the Federal Poverty Level can spend up to a staggering 76% of their income on housing. • Households of all Ethnicities Struggle, but Rate is Higher for Latino and African Americans.

ure is increasing, even while the economy is growing and official unemployment low," Rowand continued. "Households living below the Real Cost Measure are overwhelmingly working families. They are doing their part, but as our data make clear, hard work alone is not enough to get ahead. We hope our results will be useful to community, business, civic, nonprofit and philanthropic leaders working to help struggling families move up." Unlike the official federal poverty level, which does not accurately account for local costs of living, the Real Cost Measure factors the costs of housing, food, health care, child care, transportation and other basic needs to determine what it truly costs to live in every county in California. The results of this extensive study are presented in a data-rich website that examines each of California’s 58 counties at the neighborhood level, with county profiles and interactive maps. http://www.unitedwaysca.org/realcost.

number one place to test your respiratory care knowledge against the best of the best in the profession. Nowhere else will you find therapists cheering on teams from across the country as they race to answer questions on everything from aerosol delivery to arcane gas laws. Fun features like “Ask the Expert,” “Risk/Reward,” “Ask the Posse,” and “Video Visuals” add to the excitement, and live streaming on Twitter guarantees everyone has a chance to keep up with the action. Here’s how it works. A Student Sputum Bowl team consists of three people sitting at a table. Close to them is another team of three seated at their own table. Both teams will listen closely when the contest question reader verbally calls out a question that concerns some aspect of respiratory care. The team that buzzes in first has 10 seconds to answer correctly and score a point. At the end of 10 minutes, the team with the most points wins.” For more information, go to www.craftonhills.edu.

Girl Scout Gold Award recipients honored

irl Scouts of San Gorgonio honored 17 Inland Empire/Desert Girl Scouts with their Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn, at a ceremony and luncheon at the historic Mission Inn in Riverside, California. The prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting and challenges girls ages 14–17 to initiate meaningful, sustainable change locally, nationally, and/or globally through unique Take Action projects of their own creation. According to the Girl Scout Research Institute’s (GSRI) report, The Power of the Girl Scout Gold Award: Excellence in Leadership and Life, Girl Scout Gold Award recipients receive greater lifetime benefits than their peers with regard to positive sense of self, life

satisfaction, leadership, life success, community service, and civic engagement thanks to their experience in Girl Scouting, including earning their Gold Award. When compared to non-Girl Scout alumnae, Gold Award recipients soar when it comes to seeing themselves as a leader, providing service to others through volunteerism, and positive attitudes about themselves and the lives they lead. More generally, over ninety percent of Girl Scouts not only attributed their success in life to Girl Scouts, but they also said they could not have had access to the same experiences anywhere else Girls who pursue their Gold Award aspire to transform an idea and vision for change into an actionable plan with measurable, sustainable, and far-reaching results. In contrast to similar awards

from other organizations, Gold Award projects must be sustainable, meaning that the girls take steps to ensure that others will continue with their projects into the future. “Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is truly a remarkable achievement, and these young women exemplify leadership in all its form,” said Cynthia H. Breunig, President & CEO of Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio. “As a result of their imaginative, solution-driven, sustainable community service projects, this year’s Gold Award Girl Scouts did not just wish to make the world a better place; they MADE our world a better place.” By earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, each girl has become a

community leader. Their accomplishments reflect leadership and citizenship skills that set them apart. A representative sampling of projects from this year’s recipients illustrates the diversity and depth of this work: Hailey H. Noting that youth voter turnout is the lowest of any age bracket in any election, Hailey was determined to inspire her peers to become better informed and more involved in the political process of our country. Holding voter registration drives at her school, she educated senior students about political parties, the voting process and how to register for elections. The established simulated government club will continue holding annual registration drives during the school’s college and career kick-off days as well as during club rush week. Way to increase the number of empowered citizens! Samantha R. Noticing how difficult it was for a teacher to de-escalate a child who was heading for a full meltdown led Samantha to research methods to address this issue. Finding that the country is switching to a “personalized learning” environment, she developed “peace corner” kits for classrooms that have students with a history of behavioral challenges associated with A.D.D, A.D.H.., anger management and hyperactivity among others. These kits allow the students to refocus their energy, calm down and assists them in developing self-coping skills to overcome their outbursts. For most of these students the time spent in the peace corner is becoming shorter and shorter and they are able to join the other students quicker. The teachers are so pleased that the PTA at the first school will be adding more kits to additional classrooms in the coming year. Word has spread and the original elementary PTA is working with a second school’s PTA to start a “peace corner” program at their school. Amber A. Assisting one of the smallest, least supported schools in the small Rim of the World school district, Amber renovated Charles Hoffman Elementary’s Greenhouse. She repurposed an old trash shoot into a large storage unit, created a personally designed water recycling unit and compost system, and installed canopies,

planter boxes, soil and extra supplies. The greenhouse provides opportunities for the students to interact with the environment while learning healthy renewable practices that will improve the environment and possibly lead to future career choices. The water recycling unit removes excess runoff that was a long standing hazard that used to freeze and cause slip and falls. Nicole C. Noticing the large dog population in San Bernardino, and that for the most part the care of these dogs was poor, Nicole wanted to provide a way for families to improve the conditions for these animals and the care they received from their owners. With a large Spanish language only demographic, the information provided by the shelter was not very useful. she developed a bilingual storybook with photos depicting the tale of gizmo and his dog friends called “gizmo’s guide for happy pet parents.” Two copies were published and are on display in the lobby of the San Bernardino humane society and there are black and white printable bilingual coloring books of gizmo’s story that children can take home. Books were also donated to the educational outreach of the humane society for their summer camps and elementary school tour programs. Both agencies have agreed to make the coloring books a permanent part of their children’s outreach program. Nesha S. Nesha’s gold award project addresses the global issue of dairies discharging raw sewage directly into the ground. The bovine sewage leads to nitrate contamination which has been linked to chronic illnesses, cancers and ‘blue baby syndrome’. Developing a low cost, portable filtration system utilizing recycled shredded cotton shirts and aeration, Nesha was able to significantly reduce the amount of nitrates leaching into the groundwater. Her low cost means of converting nitrate leaching into a more harmless substance, nitrogen gas, have been confirmed by a professional lab and initial results are being prepared for national release. Earning the Gold Award is just one of the amazing things girls can do as part of Girl Scouts. To join Girl Scouts or learn more about volunteering, please visit www.gssgc.org/join.
