obert’s new journey takes him to a wonderful place where he will be reunited with his parents, seven brothers and three sisters.

A lifelong resident of Colton, Robert was father to Olivia Rosales Tierney (Gary), Robina Rosales, Robb Rosales and Dr. Lisa Rosales. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren ten great-grandchildren and former wife, Mary Rosales.

From 1939 to 1942, dad played shortstop for the Colton Mercuries baseball team. In 2016, the team was inducted into the Colton Sports Hall of Fame.

The only shame ever brought to our LA Dodgers household, was dad being a New York Yankees fan.

Two additional achievements came in 2014. One, when dad received his Colton Union High School diploma and second, when his military banner was installed.

C

olton Joint Unified School District is announcing its policy for providing free and reduced-price meals for children served under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program for the 2019-20 school year.

An informational letter has been sent to all Non-CEP School Households informing parents or guardians of the free and reducedprice meal application process.

Meal applications can be obtained from any school office or the Nutrition Services office. You may also apply by completing an online application at https://coltonjusd.rocketscanapps.com.

To apply, complete one application for all children in the household

and submit it to the school or Nutrition Services office for processing. Households may submit an Application at any time during the school year. Information provided on the Application will be used for the purpose of determining eligibility and may be verified at any time during the school year by school officials.

Children are eligible for free or reduced-price meals if their household income is less than or equal to the Income Eligibility Guidelines identified below, which will be used to determine eligibility for meal benefits.

These guidelines are effective July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020.

Colton Joint Unified School District will notify households of their children’s eligibility for free

meals if any household member receives CalFresh, California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs), or Food Distribution Program Indian Reservation (FDPIR) benefits.

Households will also be notified of any child’s eligibility for free meals in the individual child is categorized as foster, homeless, migrant, or runaway. An Application is not required if a household receives the eligibility notice from school officials.

Households should contact the Nutrition Services office immediately regarding any child in the household not included in the eligibility notice.

The household must notify Nutrition Services officials if they choose to decline meal benefits.

Households that did not receive

the eligibility notice from school officials and would like to apply for meal benefits must submit a complete free and reduced-rice application for Colton Joint Unified School District to determine a child’s eligibility.

Households receiving CalFresh, CalWORKs, or FDPIR benefits must include the following on their meal application: 1. Names of all enrolled children 2. One case number from any household member 3. Signature of an adult household member Households with foster, homeless, migrant, or runaway children must include: 1. Names of all enrolled children 2. Indication of individual child’s categorical eligibility status 3. Signature of an adult household member Households who may qualify for free or reduced-price meals based on income must include: 1. Names of all household members (children and adults) 2. Amount, frequency, and source of current income for each household member 3. The last 4 digits of the Social Security number (SSN) of the adult household member who signs the application or check the box if the adult does not have a SSN 4. Signature of an adult household member Foster children are eligible for free meals and may be included as a household member of a foster family if the foster family chooses to also apply for the non-foster children. Including foster children as a household member may help the non-foster children in the household qualify for free or reduced-price meal benefits. His love for history and languages made him a “know-itall” on historical facts and events and a great conversationalist in Spanish, French, Arabic and Japanese.

Joining the army in 1942, dad was stationed in Heliopolis, Egypt. He loved telling us stories about his stint as a military police officer, nearly drowning in the Mediterranean Sea trying to impress a girl (he couldn’t swim) and visiting the pyramids with a pretty army nurse or two. Staff Sargent Rosales was honorably discharged in 1946.

As a proud American, you could always find dad participating in Veterans Day and Memorial Day events. With the support of family, friends and VFW Post 6476, dad’s military banner was the first raised in honor of WWII veterans.

Located at 250 N. 9th Street, the passing, Arrowhead Regional Medical Center honored him with a flag draped “Veteran’s Heroes’ March” along two floors of the hospital with medical staff, fire and police personnel (many veterans themselves) lining the corridors to honor our veteran one last time. It was very emotional and touching to see complete strangers coming together in this way.

Dad worked at Colton Junior High School for 33 years, opening lockers for forgetful students, whistling while he worked up and down the school walkways and just being a friend to everyone he

met. To this day, he is still remembered and loved by many students and faculty.

Dad also worked at the Colton Woman’s Club for 50 years and was proudly made an honorary member. He never missed a chance to be surrounded by beautiful women. In the many decades that he worked there, there was always someone named “Betty”.

So, as an inside joke, we just referred to the club members as “Dad’s Bettys”. A bench commemorating his 50 years sits on the Woman’s Club lawn today.

Dad loved reading, singing and playing the guitar. Crafting

“Bobby Pins” for family, friends and for church and school organizations kept him busy. Social media was a way for dad to stay in touch with the world. He spent many hours exploring YouTube and catching up with the daily gossip on Facebook. He was also able to command Alexa and his iPhone as well. He was never afraid to try new things. Let’s just hope heaven has a strong WiFi connection.

Thank you, dad, for giving us a wonderful life, for your unconditional love and for providing us with a loving home base. You were humble and generous and a

Parents or guardians dissatisfied with the eligibility determination may discuss the decision with the determining official on an informal basis. Parents or guardians may also make a formal request for an appeal hearing of the decision and may do so orally or in writing to the Nutrition Services Director. Contact the hearing official at 909-580-6650 for information regarding the hearing procedures.

If a household member becomes unemployed or if the household size changes, the family should contact the Nutrition Services office. Such changes may make the household eligible for free or reduced-price meals if the household income falls at or below the levels shown above.

For up to 30 operating days into the new school year, eligibility from the previous school year will continue within the same school/agency. When the carryover period ends, unless the household is notified that their children are directly certified or the household submits an application that is approved, the children must pay full price for school meals and the school will not send a reminder or a notice of expired eligibility.

In my commitment to supporting our future generation, I’ve authored two bills focusing on anti-bullying and suicide prevention. The first bill I introduced in the Assembly, AB 34, directs every educational district to create a “Bullying and Harassment Prevention Handbook� to be easily accessed and posted on school websites. This will be a resource for students, teachers and parents to prevent bullying before it starts, and help those who fall victim to bullying.

his month, students across the Inland Empire will head back to the classroom to start the school year. It can be a hectic time for young people and their families to be meeting new teachers, attending new schools, and often adjusting to a new routine.

The new school year brings about exciting opportunities and challenges. It’s a chance to try out for a school’s sports team, or learn a new instrument, or make new friends.

Most importantly, it’s a new year to work on being better than you were the year before and grow as a young person.

For some students, returning to school brings about more than just general anxiety and nervousness.

Some young people find themselves victims of bullies; teased for reasons outside of their control.

Some are suffering in silence and afraid to speak up. For teachers and fellow classmates, it can be hard to know what each and every student is going through. This is where we, as a community of responsible adults, can make an impact. It is my hope, that in striving to be better, we instill the character in our young people that offers a helping hand to those who need it and doesn’t pass

I’ve also authored AB 1767 to create an inclusive suicide prevention program that is age appropriate for each grade level.

Prior to this, suicide prevention programs only covered grade 7 through 12. Last year in Rancho Cucamonga, we suffered the loss of four young people who died by suicide in the first two weeks of the new school year. My heart goes out to each of these young people, among them a 10-yearold boy. By teaching young people early about procedures for suicide prevention and intervention, we can possibly reach those who are suffering before it’s too late.

I want all students to have a fair shot at getting a quality education. It’s why I’ve taken the initiative to host my first inaugural Back to School Block Party this month on August 10 in San Bernardino. We gave out backpacks with school supplies, conducted health screenings for families, provided free haircuts, hosted entertainment, and had members of the San Bernardino Police and Fire Departments present. The event was a success and I’m hoping it will be replicated in other communities in the 40th district that need it most.

I

’ve been a teacher for 14 years and watched many students journey from their first day through their senior year. Recently, I attended the graduation for San Bernardino High School seniors. This is one of my favorite days of the year. It is the culmination of everything the school community has worked for; seeing the scholars walking across the stage brings me great joy.

It’s also a reminder that we must continue to do everything we can to ensure that our students can focus on learning while at school and not have to worry about their health.

I learned recently that 400 schools in California have lead contamination in their drinking water. Adding to this, about 300 public water systems in our state are not in compliance with drinking water standards. Shockingly, nearly 1 million people in California lack access to safe, clean, and affordable drinking water.

Locally, there are schools that have reported finding lead levels at more than 5 parts per billion in their drinking water system - including San Gorgonio and San Andreas High Schools. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, this is five times the level that should require action.

ing their hands in contaminated water. This crisis must be fixed now.

Recently, leaders in Sacramento passed the state budget that includes funding for drinking water repairs. I’m grateful to see this progress and applaud these efforts.

This is a sustainable approach to tackling the drinking water crisis.

It is also a way to make sure that local communities are heard in this process. And, rather than using money meant to clean up our air, lawmakers proposed paying for the repairs by imposing fees on polluters who contaminate our water. That is only fair.

I am, however, worried about the long-term sustainability of this funding. Last week, Governor Newsom signed a law that will establish the Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund. For the next ten years, the funding for this initiative will come out of the state’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund.

That’s concerning, because it will take away resources meant to help communities deal with the impacts of climate change.

That is a false choice. We can and should pay for both mitigation of climate change impacts and repair our drinking water systems.

To put it simply, students at SBHS – and millions of Californians dealing with pollution should not have to choose between having clean air and clean water.

There is a more permanent solution out there. Earlier this year, legislators authored a bill to address this problem for the longhaul by establishing a fund for making repairs to California’s drinking water systems. This legislation would charge the State Water Board with identifying the extent of the state’s drinking water

As a teacher, I’m especially appreciative of this approach. At a time when schools are grappling with budget cuts we can’t add these costs to the issues that we’re dealing with. I hope that legislators in Sacramento will continue pushing for this permanent solution.

When I think back to our recent graduation, I’m reminded of how hard our students work to succeed.

Worrying about lead in the school drinking fountain shouldn’t be on the list of things that either parents or students have to deal with.

Let’s make sure that when the next class of learners starts on their journey, we have a permanent and long-term solution established to ensure safe drinking water without compromising on air quality.

Most everyone is saying we need to do something in America. Many Americans have ideas on what should be done. We should have the right to protect ourselves. In Kentucky most everyone over 21 can carry a gun and without a license. If either of these shooters had walked into a Walmart in Kentucky or a nightclub in Louisville they would have gotten off some shots but they would likely have been met with numerous fire arms coming right back at them.

Mass shooters are mentally ill people who have allowed the darkness of evil to take control of their lives. Such people must be detected by society and cannot be allowed to own automatic weapons. They also need intense help that few Americans are equipped to render.

Mental health workers, licensed clinical social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists and counselors who have received adequate training are in demand and the demand is growing off the chart. Millions of Americans are mentally ill and need help.

Offering mental help has to be incorporated into the health education classes of our schools. All schools districts must now employ not just one but several qualified counselors. One person can’t han-

dle the load.

Our political leaders must now come together and agree on universal background checks for all weapons purchased. A special license should be required for assault weapons. I own several pistols and a three shot automatic shotgun. I’ve never felt that I needed a rifle with the capacity to shoot 50 or 70 rounds.

Walmart, churches, schools, nightclubs all have to be on guard.

We all must have security plans.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If two security guards with semiautomatic pistols had been standing outside the Walmart in El Paso or the nightclub in Dayton, the mass murders could possibly have been prevented.

Mass murderers are cowards who want to kill defenseless people.

Finally, we have to stop the hate.

Let’s stop it everywhere from politics to social media, to the highways and to our national media.

Let’s get hate out of television programs and our music.

Churches, schools, families, our elected leaders and all of us must work together to help this nation have a revival of love, respect, equality and helping each other.

Words to Think About: T he awe-inspiring Iguazu Falls

recently returned from an awe-inspiring trip to Brazil, Argentina and Chile. Two events were particularly awesome.

The first was manmade – Cristo Redemptor- statue that overlooks Rio. Towering above the city with arms stretched the figure of Christ was most inspirational.

However, it is the God-made scene that moved me most.

The Iguazu Falls are located between Brazil and Argentina and a few miles from Paraguay. This great wonder of the world is a natural result of nature’s eruptions and the confluence of the Iguazu and Parana rivers.

The Falls are wider, deeper and higher than the Niagara and Vic-

toria Falls. The sound of its deafening roar can be heard for miles and the rising mist can be felt from hundreds of yards away.

the “fingerprints of God.” The awesomeness of this wonder imprints an indelible impression on the minds of all.

Surrounded by dense jungle that is home for countless species of brilliantly plumed birds, rodents, snakes, jaguars, eagles, crocodiles and mosquitoes, the river is majestic in itself as it winds its way to the awesome Falls.

Perhaps the most moving and spectacular experience is taking the motor driven rubber boat to the edge of La Garganta del Diablo (the throat of the devil). Several years ago there was a steel/concrete catwalk extending several hundred yards from the edge of this largest of the Falls.

Recently a storm destroyed most of it and today there remains only about 50 yards of the catwalk.

There are a minimum of 275 Falls that cover a panorama of five miles. The best description fits the meaning of Iguazu which is an Indian name-raging waters. In the Summer (our Winter) the water is muddy, caused by heavy rains and run-off from the Andes Mountains.

It is the cascading water that startles the views as millions of gallons of water per second rush wildly over precipices. Often the mist that rises, combined with tropical heat causes as many as three rainbows visible at the same time.

Whether flying by helicopter over the Falls or walking on both the Brazilian and Argentina sides the views are spectacular. Tourists all along the way can be seen transfixed at what they see. The vistas have best been described as

The boat battles the current of the river and finally the catwalk is reached. At the end of it one can look into the “garanta del diablo.”

It is threatening, awesome and mesmerizing. The raging waters create a show of sound and fury that cannot be duplicated anywhere in the world. The memory of the cascading waters lingers long after the experience.

I’ll never forget the mental fear as the small boat took me ever closer to the Falls. I kept thinking what would happen if the motor shut off. Over the Falls we (the boat and me) would go. Thinking of it now, causes chills up my spine. Fortunately, we made it.

Ser vice clubs take over 100 Boys & Gir ls Club kids on back-to-school shopping spree

hree local service clubs took more than 100 youth from Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Redlands-Riverside back-to-school shopping on Aug. 3.

Kiwanis Club of RedlandsNoon, Kiwanis Club of San Bernardino and Redlands Elks

Lodge paid for the youth to each get $100 worth of clothes, shoes, socks and other essentials at Kohl’s in Redlands. A service club volunteer was paired with each young person and accompanied them around the store.

In addition to the shopping spree, each child and teen got a backpack

filled with school supplies.

“The organizations that participate this event make sure that our members who need it most are prepared for a successful school year,” said Club senior vice president Mark Davis. “We’re grateful for their service to local kids.”

350 students taking advanta ge of fr ee college Promise Prog ram at Crafton Hills Community News

he San Bernardino Community College District is offering a “Free Promise Program” for new high school graduates who are starting college this fall at Crafton Hills College or San Bernardino Valley College.

The program provides funding for full-time college students to earn an associate degree or get a career training certificate. Students are guaranteed two years of free tuition, free textbooks, free access to a laptop, cash for college expenses, priority registration, student support, and opportunities for paid work experience.

In return, students must enroll in and complete at least 12 units per semester, attend a Summer Bridge Program, participate in activities such as workshops, complete a Student Educational Plan, and meet with a counselor regularly.

There are no minimum GPA requirements to be accepted into the program, but Promise Program students must maintain a 2.0 GPA to remain in the program.

At the end of their time at Crafton, students should be able to

transfer to a four-year university such as a UC or Cal State school, where they will be able to complete their bachelor’s degree in just two years, effectively having cut the cost of that degree in half.

For many students, that is a deal too good to pass up.

Hannah Stiff, a new Crafton freshman from Yucaipa, is a Promise Program student. “I looked around at all the local universities,” she said. “I needed an academic scholarship to be able to attend them. The only school that offers full academic scholarships is ASU.” Hannah did receive a full-tuition scholarship from ASU, but when she added up the high costs of moving to Arizona and looked at the size of the school, she wasn’t excited about attending there.

“My high school counselor told me about the Promise Program at Crafton. I attended the Bridge meetings and was impressed by how they walked me through everything step-by-step. I didn’t get the same vibe at the ASU orientation that I got at the CHC one—that they are here to help me succeed. By attending Crafton, I’ll

Community celebrates activist Jane Block’s 90th bir thday

Community members from around the region gathered to celebrate activist Jane Block’s 90th birthday at the UCR Botanic Gardens on Sunday, August 11. Jane Block has been recognized by the Lincoln Institute, the YWCA, and the Jurupa Special Services District among others for her work as an environmentalist, feminist and children’s services activist. She is associated with the adoption of the Western Riverside County Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan, the preservation of the Santa Rosa Plateau, Box Springs Mountain Park, and Sycamore Canyon Park. She has served as President of the Riverside Land Conservancy and is a current board member. She is also a board member of the Endangered Habitats League, Cal State San Bernardino Water Resources Institute, the Riverside County Child Care Consortium and the Family Services Association.

How to sur vive a panic attack when it strikes a counselor and get the facts of what a panic attack is and what you can do when a panic attack occurs.

D

o you experience panic attacks and do not know what to do? A person can experience a panic attack when they least expect it. This can cause a great deal of fear and anxiety for the person.

As a result, here are six easy steps a person can follow when a panic attack strikes unexpectedly and how to overcome anxiety.

1.Take A Break: The first thing a person must do when experiencing a panic attack is to stop whatever they are doing. A panic attack can be very uncomfortable and can affect a person’s everyday thinking. Take a break to help regain your sense of comfort.

2.Take Deep Breaths: A person should take some deep breaths to help feel better and to get rid of some of the excessive fear and anxiety. There are also many kinds of breathing exercises a person can learn to follow with the help of a mental health counselor. Taking some deep breaths can help a

person relax right away.

3.Distract Yourself: A person should try to distract themselves from the panic they are experiencing. A person could get some fresh air, listen to some music, take a brisk walk, read the newspaper, or do something relaxing that will give them a fresh perspective on things.

4.Get The Facts Of Your Situation: Many people feel like they are going to die when they experience a panic attack for the first time. The fact is that you will be ok and that it takes a few minutes for the anxiety to go away. Talk to

5.Don’t Dwell on Your Thoughts: A person must not dwell or focus on their thoughts during a panic attack. The more a person tries to reason out their thoughts the longer a panic attack will last. Read some positive statements from your favorite self-help book to help overcome your negative thoughts during a panic attack.

6.Get Help: It is important to talk to a qualified professional in order to learn how to survive a panic attack. By talking to a professional, a person will be helping themselves in the long run because they will become better able to deal with any panic attacks that may occur in the future.
