fter a one year hiatus due to COVID-19, Colton High School hosted the 52nd annual Swarm Cross-Country Invitational at Yellowjacket Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 4. Over 800 runners representing 30 southern California high schools competed in this event, which sounds the starter’s gun on the 2021-22 Cross-Country season. “This is the biggest Swarm in probably 50 years since we’ve been doing this,” said Mateo Cisneros, the event’s organizer, and Assistant Coach for Colton High’s Cross-Country team.

Recall election is Sept. 14

The Swarm gives runners an opportunity to compete before official schedules begin later in September. This relaxed atmosphere places an emphasis on growth, personal improvement, Swarm, cont. on next pg.

or Carlos Palomino, the pandemic shutdown affected him and his loved ones exactly the way everyone else was affected: Loss of work and wages, loss of family and friends, and everything in his life coming to a standstill, waiting for whatever was to come “next”.

At this moment, it looks like “next” is ready to happen, so Carlos is ready to have it happen. He wants his kids back. And no, he’s not in the middle of a traumatic custody battle; he’s in the middle of going back to saving lives one kid at a time, by opening the doors to his Cops4Kids boxing gym after a year and half of the forced hiatus. Active in the Colton area since 2013, the Cops4Kids Boxing Gym was working with 35 local

area students prior to the shutdown. The program is designed to mentor kids to be positive and productive members of society, get them off the street by giving them somewhere safe to go after school, and to build a bridge between the students and law enforcement.

The program teaches boys and girls boxing skills, provides mentorship in the form of an adult willing to listen to them, and in the past, provided weekly tutoring for those needing a little help with their school subjects. All of the coaches on staff at Cops4Kids are local law enforcement officers who volunteer to come out and work out alongside the students. As the officers train, some of them are working towards participating in a real bout against other law enforcement officers from Cops4Kids Fundraiser, cont. on next pg.
