B

loomington High School hosted a very special guest from across the pond on Thursday, Oct. 25. Lord Mayor Duncan Sandys from Westminster (London), England paid a visit to the school

to officially invite the Bloomington High School band to participate in the 2020 London New Year’s Day Parade! Invitations also have been extended to members of the Colton High and Grand Terrace High bands who would like to join them, BHS Band Director Victor Torres said.

Thursday’s program included a performance by the Bloomington High School band, and a formal invitation to the parade from Lord Mayor Sandys, who also is the great-grandson of famed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. London Parade founder Bob

Bone, Executive Director of Destination Events (the organization that coordinates the parade); and Gary Locke, United States Liaison with Destination Events and Associate Professor Emeritus at Riverside City College, also spoke to band members. Students Parade, cont. on next page

The Truth About Measure V Measure V “Is Another Tax”

The Real Facts on Measure V: Grant tles, explored a haunted maze, purchased various foods, and played carnival games for small prizes. “Today was so much fun, I liked being with my friends and going to the haunted house and it wasn’t scary,” said Ava Duran, Grant Elementary School student. A DJ played Halloween-themed music ranging from the Ghostbusters theme song to the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack. Towards the end of the evening children who were dressed in costumes were asked to join a CosParade sat mesmerized as the special guests described the excitement of the world’s largest parade winding past well-known international landmarks in front of an audience of nearly 670,000 spectators. Millions more watch the parade on television. Mr. Bone noted that the most popular of the more than 8,000 parade entertainers are the marching bands from America; something England does not have. The visitors also brought some special gifts: A formal, framed invitation; pins; cuff links; a commemorative plate from Buckingham Palace; miniature British flags (which Mr. Sandys happily autographed for students) and a special umbrella meant to ensure that it will not rain on the parade. Bloomington High earned a spot in the parade after the band sub-

tume Parade around the school. Students had elaborate costumes such as Ninjas, werewolves, princesses and even a detailed Mary Poppins costume. As the evening came to an end, students carried their prized pumpkins, candy and toys while parents led them to the photo booth where Grant Elementary School’s Principal Patrick McGinn took pictures of the families with a green screen behind them where a scary background would later be Photoshopped in. “Everything was great even if we may have had a few bumps in the road,” concluded Principal McGinn. “We have a wonderful community that has been very generous to us.” mitted a video. Organizers also research bands online. In addition, BHS Band Director Torres has maintained a relationship with the London parade organizers since he took a band from another district to London. This marks the first time that Colton Joint Unified School District bands have been invited to participate in the parade. Band members will spend the next year fundraising in order to pay their way to the parade, noted Band Director Torres. “Attending the New Year’s Day Parade in London is certainly going to be a life-changing experience for the BHS Band members and our sister schools, Colton and Grand Terrace. Our kids have worked extremely hard to build themselves up musically, academically, and socially and are ready to take this challenge head on,” Torres said. “Each performer is more than deserving of this honor

Sisters Illisa Gallegos, former Grant student, and Gabriela Gallegos, current student. to represent CJUSD, California, and, most importantly, the U.S.A.” “This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to participate in such a wonderful event,” added Bloomington High School Principal Sandy Torres, “The experience of going to London, England will be something they will never forget. We are thankful and honored to have our band perform in the 2020 London New Year’s Day Parade.” Mr. Victor Torres, meanwhile, added that he is grateful to the community for their support: “I would like to thank our wonderful BHS administration, faculty and staff for their support and excitement. I would also like to thank our district administration and school board members for their overwhelming support of music and the arts in our schools. The best is yet to come!”

n partnership with the Black Voice Foundation, the San Bernardino County Museum presents the exhibit Footsteps to You: Chattel Slavery. The exhibit brings together a collection of documents and artifacts that were bequeathed to the Foundation by the estate of historian Jerry Gore in 2016. The exhibit opens on Nov. 1 and runs through Apr. 1. Jerry Gore's lifelong goal was to expose the horrors of slavery so that visitors to his hometown of Maysville, Kentucky could appreciate the daily perils experienced by enslaved people as well as the strength it required to fight for their freedom. This exhibit presents the unique artifacts collected by Gore in his effort to build historical empathy, a means of achieving a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of people from the past. First-person accounts, newspaper articles, and original objects of the slave trade serve to put the viewer in the shoes of those that were subjected to this treatment. According to Hardy Brown, chairman of the Black Voice Foundation, "Footsteps to You immerses the visitor in a world where people were considered objects - a prejudice that was entirely based on the color of one's skin. Visitors will learn that these injustices not only affected those who were actively oppressed, but that

slavery's lingering effects have haunted people even decades after it was abolished. Visitors are challenged to ask themselves 'What side of history would I have been on?'" Jennifer Dickerson, Curator of History, said "this exhibit challenges the visitor to view history, not from the traditional perspective of the culture holding power, but from the perspective of the individuals who were oppressed. Those voices resonate profoundly in these objects." The Black Voice Foundation originally connected with Jerry Gore through their "Footsteps to Freedom" tour. Since 1996, the Foundation has hosted over 2,000 educators on the Footsteps to Freedom, Underground Railroad Tour where they have walked the steps of past enslaved freedom seekers. These tours strive to build historical empathy amongst participants by learning first-hand about the incredible courage of the people who sought freedom or who helped others achieve it along one of the central routes of the Underground Railroad, Kentucky to Canada. The County Museum is at 2024 Orange Tree Lane, at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. General admission is $10 (adult), $8 (military or senior), $7 (student), and $5 (child aged 5 to 12).

Some things to consider before you vote to tax yourself this November.

the path we’re already on. It is stant “General Fund Transfers”. intentionally vague and inten- You have to wonder why. tionally omits specifics to give • The same local “lobbies” and council free will to exercise a bargaining units that are funded by maximum of 20% general fund the General Fund and endorsing transfer (GFT) from the City’s this “tax” are the same ones in Utility Fund to balance the Gen- large part that are responsible for eral Fund. our current structural deficit due to There are 3 bogus “SAFE- their over reliance on and overburGUARDS” that attempt to make dening the general fund with irrethis Measure look like more than what it really is; • It states all funds generated by Measure V stay IN Colton, FOR Colton. Well, where else would they or should they go???? • It creates a Fiscal Oversight Committee. The current and active predecessor Measure D Fiscal Oversight Committee’s recommendations and observations have ever been taken seriously by the current council or staff. Their agendas have always been prepared FOR them, not BY them or based on resident input. This is a useless safeguard. • It requires mandatory audits. Yet another weak attempt at making Measure V appear to be something it isn’t. The City already has to have mandatory independent audits REGARDLESS of this Measure. They are not a condition of this Measure nor are extra audits required for this Measure. The City’s attempt at trying to paint a picture of being fiscally responsible is a moot point because in actuality the Measure has no bearing on audits because regular audits are required by law annually anyway. Residents are not given extra assurance over and above the regular assurance they are given by law. There is no added value. Some other critical points to consider; • How long are residents willing to let their “level of services” be held hostage or used as a leverage to let the bully lobbies put fear in the hearts of residents by falsely claiming emergency response times will go up and that crime will go up and that their libraries and streets and parks will go unmaintained? Haven’t we been throwing more and more money at these problems with no success only to end up with a bigger bill and a projected possible bankruptcy in the near future if we do not balance the general fun on its own? Throwing more tax money has not solved or prevented fiscal mismanagement. Residents deserve these things without a Measure that raises their taxes. • How long are residents going to allow the City to kick the can down the road before fiscal mismanagement catches up with the City? We can look to the neighboring city of San Bernardino to understand what we could be headed for if we continue down

sponsible negotiations that continually increase salaries that we cannot afford to pay, now or in the future. Don’t be fooled by the fact that utility workers are included as those who endorse this Measure. Utility workers are paid FROM the UTILITY FUND that is currently bailing out the General Fund which will come to an end in 2021 if Measure V does not pass. This is an attempt to make it appear as if there is wide support among City workers for this tax. • There is no real accountability for how the General Fund Transfer (GFT) will be used. It states that

annual reports will ensure funds are spent properly but does not specify HOW and it does not require a full reporting for HOW either. • The majority of the Colton Utility Commission is not in favor of Measure V.

spending -OR- they can vote NO and let the current Measure D expire in 2021 so other REAL solutions can be reevaluated that will not burden the residents with additional taxes or rate increases which will send the message to the City to live within its means.

Colton’s real budget problem STILL has not yet been seriously addressed. The current reasons for the increase in expenditures are being shoved under the rug. Residents are given the choice of voting for this tax to sustain their General Fund by raiding the Utility Fund in order to sustain over-

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. I

’ve heard recently of the deaths of two childhood friends, Lawrence and Frank, - Baa and Tunner. My nickname was Ram. We had moved into their neighborhood from Ramcat Alley. They were Italians and lived in adjacent homes. My parents were divorced and I lived with my Dad. Their mothers included me in all their family activities. They taught me to eat spaghetti and drink wine. Baa was the oldest, then me and Tunner the youngest. We played, fought and ran together. And got into trouble together. Baa became a school teacher and Tunner worked in the local steel mill. He was also head of the local Mafia. I last saw them 30 years ago. We spent several hours together in the Italian-American Club, sharing beers. They were both surprised that I had become a minister. I’VE OFTEN THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT CONTRIBUTED TO MY LIFE THAT MOTIVATED ME. My Dad only went to the 6th grade. He was a molder and farmer most of his life. But he motivated me to work hard, save a little money, bought me a trumpet and taught me to read. My favorites were Horatio Alger stories, Zane Gray westerns and Rover boys. And he took me to church. Since then my life has been filled with activity (work, music, religion and ideas (books.) Particularly the latter. The following do not include my theological influences. Fletcher, de Bono and Frankl. John Fletcher, Anglican Episcopal Minister was the father of Situations Ethics. I agree with most of what he said. The basic premise of S.E. (Situation Ethics) is very simplistic. “The rightness or wrongness of any event is determined by the situation.” Basically it is saying that love is at times more important in ethical matters than any other moral principle. Paul Tillich, the great theologian said, “Love is the ultimate law.” In his book of 1966, Fletcher gives a classic illustration. Following World War II, a German woman, Mrs. Bergmeier, who was taken captive by the Russians while she foraged for food for her three children. She was taken to POW Camp in the Ukraine. Her husband spent months searching for her. Mrs. Bergmeier learns that her release was only possible if she was pregnant. After much inner turmoil, she decided to allow herself to become impregnated; after verification, she was released and sent home. She was welcomed with open arms, even when her neighbors learned how she had managed her release. The baby was born and he was loved as well. What about the moral law against adultery? Her decision was based on love. Is stealing always wrong? Is lying always wrong? What about murder? Fletcher categorically stated, “The situation determines the rightness or wrongness of an event.” Dr. Edward de Bono’s classic book, “Lateral Thinking,” has challenged all who have read it, including me. Born in Malta in 1933, his academic credentials are impressive. His life work has been to spread his theory Lateral Thinking. There is more than one way to skin a cat. You need to think outside the box. That’s Lateral Thinking. Wherever there is a problem, L.T. is applicable. Many years ago when elevators were just coming into vogue, a major hotel in San

Diego wanted one installed. The building was not structurally sound for one. For the first time the decision was made to build one outside of the structure. Lateral Thinking. Accepting the status quo is the brain of lateral thinking. Dr. de Bono gives a succinct explanation of L.T. “It is a method that can be applied during a problem and created a problem-solving process to help come up with possible workable solutions.” Victor Frankl M.D. was born in

Vienna, Austria on March 26, 1905 and died on September 2, 1997 at age 92. He was one of my mentors. He alone survived Hitler’s Holocaust. His wife, brothers and parents did not. He survived because he was a doctor. Two things I remember about him. He believed that having a reason to live will sustain a person to survive any suffering or ordeal. “Man’s Search for Meaning,” is a classic. Second, he often encouraged humor. His favorite joke was
