On Tuesday, Nov. 26 the Sons of American Legion Post 155 served 125 plates of food that brimmed with turkey and all the trimmings. According to Historian and Chaplain Jaime Romero, main chef of the event and pictured far left, the event originally started as a means to reach out to the homeless population, but with very little participation, the event’s focus became that of the veterans, their families and the community at-large as an opportunity to honor and support veterans during the holidays. Romero indicated that a highlight this year was the participation of eight high school students who volunteered their time to serve. They came from Colton High School, Rancho Cucamonga and San Bernadino. More photos on page 2.

ngel Guerra-Chagolla, founder of Karma and Blessings, has brought a clothing closet and a Friendsgiving event to Bloomington High School. Just last month, in November, Guerra-Chagolla introduced the first ever clothing closet to the high school. “I bought out Kmart in Redlands before it closed down. I was able to purchase and donate $6,000 worth of clothing. We donated brand new shoes, clothing and jackets,” said GuerraChagolla. She shared that the goal is to keep the closet open year round. “The closet is currently managed by The Parents Center, a community liaison hub. We currently offer school clothing to make students feel confident at school and business attire for colBHS, cont. on next pg.

Funding for the dinner came from the Sons of American Legion Post 155 Treasury, as well as community donations.

BHS lege and job interviews,” continued Guerra-Chagolla. As for the Friendsgiving, also a new initiative brought forth by Karma and Blessings, will host 130 students from Bloomington High School on December 8. “A local meat company is donating all of the chicken to us that we will be providng. At the Friendsgiving we will be giving students a full lunch, giving out stocking stuffers and raffling items such as

new shoes, table top pool tables and lots more,” Guerra-Chagolla said. “This year we really focused on Bloomington High School. It’s in an area that needs some community involvement. We’ve had a lot of firsts this year and we’re hoping to expand in 2020,” said Guerra-Chagolla. In the next year the organization is hoping to host quarterly education workshops that teach students business etiquette, financial empowerment, and stress manage-

ment. “Currently, anyone can visit https://karmanblessings.org/ to learn how to tie a tie, learn how to draft a resume and understand basic business communications,” concluded Guerra-Chagolla. The organization will soon post its calendar for the first quarter of 2020 for volunteers or possible donors. Visit https://karmanblessings.org for more information.

Guest Op-Ed

Raoul Lowery Contreras Author Roger Hedgecock and I served on the campaign committee of Houston Flournoy, the 1974 GOP candidate for California governor. When he successfully ran for County Supervisor I supported him as I did when he successfully ran for San Diego Mayor. My help: a maximum campaign contribution. When Mayor Hedgecock was criminally indicted for 13 felony counts of lying on campaign contribution reports, I supported him. The jury voted 11 to 1 for conviction. When retried I supported him. He was convicted. He appealed. He was removed from office by law. He was immediately hired as a radio talk show host on San Diego’s all-news station. His show was a daily xenophobic blast about how Mexico and Mexicans were ripping off the United States and invading it with 30 millions of illegal aliens. Within weeks his show was number one in San Diego, the 8th largest city in the U.S. and the largest city on the Mexican border. His audience ratings among dozens of stations was a solid 9. He even substituted for Rush Limbaugh, until Limbaugh discovered that Hedgecock had been convicted by 23 of 24 jurors of 13 felonies. I was new to newspaper commentary but my home paper was La Prensa-San Diego and I was carried from time to time in the San Diego Union and Evening Tribune -- people knew me. Hedgecock eagerly debated me on his show whenever I called in. I called regularly because he would taunt me over the air to call to debate his xenophobia. As it turned out, those calls, some of which led to on-air debates lasting 20-30 minutes, eventually led to my being hired for my own nightly radio talk show on the same station and, to television commentaries and analysis. Staking out positions that supported Mexico, Mexicans and immigrants was easy for me. After all I was an honor student in high school and college, a published writer/journalist, a speaker of English and Spanish and was actually born in Mexico where I lived until my American citizen mother brought me to the U.S. when I was three. Note: I have never demeaned the U.S. ever, only some of its people who masquerade as Americans but have no idea what the Constitution is or what the Declaration of Inde-

pendence says. I do pick on U.S. Navy squids and soldiers with their cute berets, however. Another plus for the show’s weeknight and weekend programming on San Diego radio was the fact that I had enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on my eighteenth birthday and proudly served for eight years, active and in the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve. In all San Diego radio, I was the only former United States Marine on air. Add Spanish-speaking three million American resident people in our signal area, plus Tijuana’s million, plus all 60,000 active duty Marines stationed in San Diego and Orange County Marine bases, their families and thousands of retired Marines and their families - add all those people and I had an audience. On Saturday/Sunday mornings, I led the a.m. radio market; I even beat NPR. Before I was hired for my own show, I affirmatively responded when Hedgecock asked me to appear on his show, usually to debate some right-wing nut about immigration. Those appearances helped get my own show. Then one day I was on the Hedgecock show, in studio, debating a former Army sergeant who had no college and easily handled anything he had to say. When we finished, former San Diego Mayor Roger Hedgecock who had escaped military service during Vietnam because he had pimples (technically a skin condition, something like bone spurs) and couldn’t pass the physical, asked me the question that could have come out of Donald Trump’s mouth today. “If, he asked, “the United States and Mexico went to war, which side would you support? I looked at him and said, “ My service in the United States Marine Corps speaks for itself. I didn’t dodge the draft with pimples on my face. I not only served, I loved it. We’ve not spoken since. Good thing there was a seven second delay on his microphone or his fandom would have had coronaries. What’s going on today with childish comments about four U.S. citizen congress people, three of whom were born here, going back “to where they came from, brings back that memory. If your skin looks like mine, someone somewhere will “suggest I go back where I came from; or, ask which side I would be on in a U.S war with Mexico. To all those people, all of them regardless of rank, social or economic position, Semper Fi..! Been there and done that, have you? Contreras is the author of WHITE ANGLO-SAXON PROTESTANTS (WASPS) & MEXICANS; he formerly wrote for the New York Times’ New America News Service

A solution to gifts that nobody needs or wants Let’s be real. Buying for others is difficult. And stressful. Ah, the gifts. Let the shopping frenzy begin. Purchasing gifts that someday will be regifted to others in the original box. And eventually these unused items will end up in a thrift store or spend eternity in a landfill. Think about the gifts of Christmas past that you didn’t need or want. You appreciated the sentiment behind the gift and thanked the giver, but that was one ugly sweater. Ugh. I’ll pass on Snoop Dogg’s new cookbook. “From Crook to Cook serves only to take more of your hard-earned paycheck. I don’t want to see this recipe of disasters under my tree. Sorry Snoop. Don’t feel badly. I don’t want to deck my halls with Martha Stewart’s goofy goodies either. Toaster Grilled Cheese Bags are not for me. Too cheesy of a gift. Wah-wah. Herbal Warming Slippers sound too Zen for me. I like toasty toes as well as the next gal, but fuzzy socks are my favorite. Why do individuals engage in zany buying rituals? You purchase gifts and put the receipts in the boxes so family members and friends can return the items after the holidays—so everybody wastes time standing in long lines. Spread that festive misery! What about gag gifts? That works for some families, while others haggle over the amount everyone has to abide by. The 2020 Pooping Pooches White Elephant Gag Gift Calendar is funny and gross. But at $16.99, that’s an expensive laugh. The Potty Putter Toilet Time

Golf Game may interfere with bowels movements, so please don’t bring this to a passing party. In case both conservatives and liberals attend the office party, avoid the Donald Trump Stretchy Keychain and the Hillary Clinton Novelty Toilet Paper as gag gifts. Not everyone loves political humor. What about the White Elephant idea? Each guest brings a wrapped used item. You do get rid of something you don’t want, but you usually get something else you don’t want. Gift cards can be stuck in your purse or wallet and easily forgotten. I’ve got several of these with a small balance leftover—that I forget to use. It’s so wrong to donate money to a charity on behalf of a loved one. And then give them a card that explains how wild boars are suffering. They will call you a Grinch behind your back or a dopey dogooder in front of your face. Homemade holiday foods are yummy, but it takes time and effort to prepare and package. Hug and thank the person who still bakes. A professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, released his book “Scroogenomics: Why You Shouldn’t Buy Presents for the Holidays. Of course, retailers disagree with a passion for peddling their products. Our environment does not like the holidays. Boxes, bows, bags, and wrapping paper increase the colossal pile of stuff in garbage dumps. What about gifts for children?

Cheap and flashy plastic junk made to look like toys fill playrooms. A giant mountain of toys can overwhelm kids. Too many sparkling presents under the tree does not teach creativity or gratitude. According to a 2018 study in the journal Infant Behavior and Development, an environment with fewer toys is better for kids. Less toys resulted in healthier play and deeper cognitive development. So, tame that toy overload. And spent winter playing outside in the snow. Creative building with Legos is fun, but a bazillion of them in every corner, drawer, and closet produces chaos. Teens do not need the latest technology upgrades. Each Christmas brings a boatload of TV commercials for the newest must-have toys or gadgets. Gimme. Gimme. Gimme. Just because a toy is a bargain at a thrift store, doesn’t mean you have to buy it. Credit card debt does not make a merry Christmas. Downsize the gifts and spend money on holiday concerts and outings. Offer fun family experiences instead of bookoo toys and electronic gadgets. So‌ did you get everything you wanted? Stop asking that question to kids after gifts are opened. Our culture has run amuck on material possessions and instant gratification. What’s the solution? Give the gift of green. Cash. What better way to stimulate the economy than givers and receivers spending their dollars after Christmas? Ask your children to pick what two affordable toys they want. Parents can select and buy one of the toys to offer a surprise on Christmas morning. Grandparents can purchase the other item. Many families try to find balance between over-commercializedeverything, fostering greed, and the true meaning of Christmas. Can pretend Santa be too generous with gift-giving? “The Christmas Heart": "Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide open heart that thinks of others first. The birth of the baby Jesus stands as the most significant event in all history, because it has meant the pouring into a sick world the healing medicine of love which has transformed all manner of hearts for almost two thousand years... Underneath all the bulging bundles is this beating Christmas heart.â€?—George Matthew Adams Melissa Martin, Ph.D., is an author, columnist, educator, and therapist. She lives in Ohio.

Words to Think About: Mayonnaise jar and coffee When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the coffee.

have a myriad of sources for ideas that stimulate my interest for articles. From friends, news reports, books I’m reading, things I’m thinking about. However, this week I was rummaging around in my papers and started reading an item that I didn’t even remember that I had it. It was dated at April 14, 2004, and had been given to me by a longago friend. It’s so provocative that I must share it with you. The Mayonnaise Jar and Coffee

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So, the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous

few years ago, I was admitted into Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital for four days (don’t worry! I am completely healthy now!). Being in the hospital is not fun. However, the staff at the hospital really know what they are doing. They have an entire child life department dedicated to activities for the child patients to keep them busy. I really enjoyed the TV with gaming console and DVD player. After I got out of the hospital, with the help of generous family and friends, I was able to raise $1,500 to purchase a new TV, gaming console/DVD and isolation box to keep it in. This unit is now in the hospital and being used by patients!

Two years ago, I decided I wanted to give back and do something for the hospital again. That is when Caden's Teddy Bears for Kids began. The teddy bear drive bears are passed out to patients in the hospital on Christmas and Christmas Eve. We are on track to reach 1,000 total combined bears from all three drives this year!! Being in the hospital is tough for anyone at any age. However, being a child in the hospital at Christmas is extra challenging. My hope is these bears brighten the day for patients and their family members. How a Crafton alumnus ear ned an inter nship with the city of Eastvale

L

ike all college students before graduation, Ibraheem Lawal was busy mapping out the next step. Looking to expand his resume, the Crafton Hills College alumnus stumbled upon what he thought would be a great opportunity: an internship for the city of Eastvale. So, he applied. Six months went by before he got a call from a would-be colleague offering him the job. The timing, Lawal said, couldn’t have been more perfect. “I applied in January and they called me a week after I finished my master’s program (at the University of Redlands) in August,” he said. Located in western Riverside County and surrounded by more populated areas such as Corona and Norco, Eastvale, one of California’s newest cities, incorporated in October 2010 and continues to experience strong growth each year. Today, more than 73,000 residents – including Lawal – call Eastvale “home,” in large part because of its smalltown feel. Lawal is becoming a jack-of-alltrades for Eastvale, where currently, he shoots and edits videos for the city’s social media chan-

Soon, the Eastvale resident plans to launch his own business along with a personal goal to inspire others “to keep going no matter what’s ahead.” “Be engaged and contribute.

Lawal’s internship is through the city’s management team, under the direction of the Eastvale City Manager, Bryan Jones. Though the job may not directly fall under Lawal’s master’s degree coursework – he majored in information technology at the U of R – Lawal said the internship is exposing him to all aspects of city government, particularly “ how a city “works.” “I’ll say the best thing about

working in a small city is that you get to work in every department, and because the city is growing, there’s always something to do. It doesn’t get boring,” he said. Lawal knows his future is bright, but the path to get there isn’t always going to be easy. After graduating from Crafton with an associate’s degree in economics, Lawal transferred to Cal State University San Bernardino. In 2016, he earned his bachelor’s degree in communication-media studies, before moving on to U of R.

Behavioral Health seeks feedback on innovative projects

T

he San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) invites community members to review and provide feedback on the draft 2019 Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) Innovation Plan, which includes creative, time-limited, test projects focused on eating-disorder prevention and treatment, art, and service-delivery improvement. Projects with successful outcomes may become permanent programs. The Eating Disorder Collaborative project seeks to develop a partnership between behavioral health professionals and primary healthcare providers, including community health centers and college health clinics, in an effort

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Find yourself by putting yourself out there,” Lawal said. “I feel the best way to do this is to build your self-improvement, that’s the best way to go. Learn how to improve yourself every single day.”

to educate staff on how to recognize and access services for a person living with an eating disorder and where to refer for treatment. The Cracked Eggs project is a therapeutic art workshop series that uses art, in conjunction with peer facilitators and behavioral health professionals, to express and manage mental health symptoms. The Full Service Partnership project, developed in collaboration with Fresno, Marin, Ventura, Siskiyou, and Sacramento counties, seeks to create a consistent behavioral health care service experience across the state and implement measurable goals to improve care. “MHSA funded innovation proj-

ects allow our department to discover and test new methods of delivering behavioral health care,” said DBH Director Veronica Kelley. “This funding, along with feedback received from our community members, helps DBH provide services responsive to the unique needs of our county.” The plan and comment forms are available for review at http://www.sbcounty.gov/dbh during the public posting of this plan from now through Dec. 26. For a printed copy of the plan and/or comment forms, alternative formats, or for questions and/or to submit comments by phone, call (800) 722-9866 or dial 7-1-1 for TTY users.

he San Bernardino County Board of Education elected Laura Mancha as president of the five-member governing body during its monthly meeting on Dec. 2. Mancha, who will serve a one-

year term, represents Trustee Area C, which includes the school districts of Chaffey Joint Union, Valley, Cucamonga, Chino Fontana, Mountain View and portions of Ontario-Montclair. She replaces Hardy Brown II, whose one-year term ended on Dec. 2.

Mancha acknowledged and thanked Brown for his service and leadership during the past year as board president. “It has been my honor to serve as president and represent the County Board of Education,” Brown said.

Mancha has served on the County Board since 2010 and was previously president of the group during the 2013-14 term. In addition to the presidency, Alen Ritchie was elected as vice president of the Board. Ritchie represents Trustee Area E, which includes the school districts of Bear Valley, Colton, Morongo, Redlands, Rim of the World (east of Highway 138) and

Yucaipa-Calimesa. Board members are elected to four-year terms. The Board establishes policy, adopts an annual budget, approves building plans and hears student expulsion, inter-district transfer and charter school appeals. The Board meets monthly, regularly the first Monday of the month. The next scheduled meeting for the Board is scheduled for Jan. 6, 2020.
