ne of the most exciting things to see in any community is people coming together. That’s exactly what happened over the last few weeks where members of the City of Colton Public Works crew were tasked with the installation of a new beautiful “dryscape” in the quad area at City Hall. Armed with 24 yards of decorator rock, ten yards of refined granite material, and an assortment of drought-tolerant plants, the nineman crew, led by acting Public Works Superintendent Fernando Ramirez, completed the landscape project just in time for the CityWide holiday festivities, which started with the Christmas Parade, Street Fair and Christmas Tree Lighting.

Superintendent Ramirez enthusiastically explains, “we all had to work together to get the job done in time…teamwork,” and adds “now the public will get to see a completed landscape when they come for the festivities.” The last day of the project was Thursday, Dec 5, and needless to say the news was spreading quickly among the employees at city hall. Throughout the day, people were coming out to see our crew in action, and a few even spent their lunch time outdoors at the kiosk while enjoying the new landscaping project. Council Member Dr. G also came out to check out the action and was invited to participate in the final installation (spreading) of the “rainbow” rock - which he enthusiastically accepted. Jin Lee responded when asked about the project, “the work started three weeks ago, and required coordination among departments, and a creative schedule change.” Although the next project is just starting and will take some time, Dr. G points out that the public restrooms will soon be renovated including needed repairs, a fresh design and new fixtures. “We’re pleased with the beautification progress,” says Dr. G. The city needs to identify those residents in the Reche Canyon area that they are powered by Edison and not Colton Electric to mitigate any foreseeable issues.” “If Edison shuts off their customers, their customers’ power will go down. s I sit here writing this column all the errands that I still have to complete are buzzing around in my head and I am starting to feel overwhelmed. There are gifts that still need to be purchased, holiday cards to be mailed - which I still haven’t received from Shutterfly! - Christmas dinner menu to plan and the inevitable trip to an overcrowded grocery store. The holiday season seems to cause a flurry of stress as we get wrapped up in the holiday hoopla, setting high expectations in order to make things perfect for our family and friends. There are moments that I remind myself that the holiday season isn’t about the gifts and the running around, but about being with family, and I’m able to pause and take in a few deep breaths, but once the mind starts racing again, that very fleeting moment of calm quickly dissipates. I researched some tips and found some by Dr. Alok Trivedi, a psychological performance coach at The Aligned Performance Institute. I hope you find them helpful, as for myself, I will breathe easier come Dec. 24. Stop trying to please your family Learn to say “no” to your family sometimes, otherwise the holiday season will be a very stressful time for you. And while quality time is nice, allocate your time accordingly, and don’t over-commit. Stop painting the holiday fantasy Know that the stereotypical holiday fantasy is just that — a fantasy. So if you’re unrealistic in your expectations, you will only be let down. “Ask yourself, what’s the benefit of the holidays for you? What’s the worst that could happen if it doesn’t work out for you?” Let the reality of our holidays unfold realistically, he adds. Trying to make a fantasy into reality will only lead to disappointment. Stop being a perfectionist Don’t try to control situations that you cannot control because it will only leave you frustrated.

Stop eating to excess It’s so easy to want to indulge in hot eats and treats over the holidays, but try not to overdo it. “This is big — more than people realize,” he says. “What people do is they want to give themselves freedom to indulge, but what that does is it creates more stress in your body which then doesn’t help you handle the psychological stress on a day-today basis.”

Christmas is family time. Don't exclude anybody. God is inclusive. He came to love all the people of the world. There are always people who feel excluded, unloved and seem to be the rag muffin person in the family. No one is perfect. Everyone has failed in different ways. Christmas is a different day. Stores, most restaurants, workplaces and businesses are closed on Christmas. What are you going to do? Be happy, reflect, give thanks and don't feel sorry for yourself. Take time to focus on the one that so many Christmas songs have been written about, "Christ, The Savior is born." We need Christmas because we need The Savior of Christmas. We need peace on earth and good will to men. We need a Silent Night and a holy night. We need the Joy to the World as sung in the famed Christmas Carol. We need to know the grave is not the end. We need to have the hope of eternal life. We need help to deal with our grief and strength to face tomorrow. Jesus came to give us this and more. That's why we need him and the message of Christmas so desperately in our lives.

amily, friends and colleagues joined Cal State San Bernardino faculty, staff and students on Dec. 2 for A Day of Remembrance to honor the memory of 14 people -- five of them CSUSB alumni -- who died in a mass shooting at the Inland Regional Center on the same date in 2015. The memorial was held at CSUSB’s Peace Garden, which was created three years ago in memory of the five alumni, all graduates from the university’s College of Natural Sciences: Robert Adams, Yucaipa (public health education, 2011); Juan Espinoza, Highland (biology, 2002); Shannon Johnson, Los Angeles (environmental health science,

2004); Yvette Velasco, Fontana (environmental health science, 2013); and Michael Wetzel, Lake Arrowhead (biology, 2001). Located next to the college’s Chemical Sciences Building, the garden has five large boulders, five benches, five trees and a fivesided pedestal on which a bell stands. Each side of the pedestal has the name of one of the CSUSB alumni. Each year on Dec. 2 the bell is rung 14 times, once for each life lost in the attack. The other victims were Isaac Amanios, Fontana; Bennett BetBadal, Rialto; Harry Bowman, Upland; Sierra Clayborn, Moreno

The program began with Michael Nguyen, a lecturer from the Department of Health Science & Human Ecology who rang the Peace Garden Bell 14 times. College of Natural Sciences Dean Sastry Pantula welcomed the attendees. “It is with peace in our hearts, we come together to cherish the memories of our loved ones, our friends, our former students, and our college community. It is with peace in our hearts, we wish together that such senseless shootings be eliminated forever around the globe,” Pantula said. “It is with peace in our hearts, we imagine a better future, for those who are gathered here today.” William Vandyke, also a lecturer

Erica Porteous, sister of victim Yvette Velasco, spoke on behalf of the families and the pain they feel from that tragic day. “Not a day goes by that we feel the loss and the pain that comes with Yvette not physically being with us,” said Porteous, who held a framed picture of her sister.

The ceremony concluded with Nguyen re-ringing the Peace Bell. Velasco’s mother, Marie, said the family relives the pain of their loss whenever there’s another mass shooting. She said when she sees news reports of mothers searching for their children, she instantly remembers the pain of learning the loss of her daughter. “We know what it feels like,” Marie Velasco said. “We have lived that pain.”

ecember is the traditional month of the year to celebrate Christmas. The name stands for “Christ’s Mass,” which is a Roman Catholic term. The pressing question remains. Why is Christmas celebrated on December 25? The word “syncretism” is a theological term. Basically, it refers to the thoughts and practices that were taken from pagan or Jewish religions and incorporated into Christianity. During the first 300 years following the life of Jesus, there were three other religions opting with Christianity for dominance. Judaism, Emperor Worship and Mithraism. Several practices were adopted from each of them into Christianity. Syncretism. The term Mithraism comes from its “god,” Mithra. And, of course the most popular, “White Christmas.” It was composed by Irving Berlin and made famous by Bing Crosby. Bing sang it for the first time on December 25, 1941. Four San Ber nardino County Mock Trial teams qualify for semifinals

os Osos, Oak Hills, Rancho Cucamonga and Redlands high schools have advanced to the semifinals of the 38th annual San Bernardino County Mock Trial competition.

The semifinals for the competition will be held on Jan. 15-16 beginning at 5 p.m. - at the San Bernardino Justice Center (247 W. Third St.). In the semifinals, Los Osos (Gold) from the Chaffey Joint Union High School District will take on Redlands of Redlands Unified. In the other semifinal, Rancho Cucamonga (Purple), also from the Chaffey district, faces Oak Hills (White) of Hesperia Unified. During the semifinals, the teams will compete as both the prosecution and defense over the two days of competition. The top two teams from each semifinal match advance to the county Mock Trial finals, which are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Jan. 18 and will be held at the Foothill Law and Justice Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

Redlands High has made the finals in each year since 2010 and is seeking its record 16th county title. Los Osos (Gold) has qualified for the semifinals for five consecutive years. Oak Hills (White) and Rancho Cucamonga (Purple) are both making their first appearances in the semifinals. The Mock Trial competition simulates a criminal case where students portray the principal courtroom characters on both the

prosecution and defense sides of a case before a real judge. This year's case is People v. Matsumoto, a murder case. There were 32 county teams that competed in four preliminary rounds that ended on Dec. 4. The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and the San Bernardino County District Attorney's office are co-sponsors of the competition. The winner of the county competition advances to the state finals in March.

ture, transportation, flood control, trails, habitat enhancement and agriculture. Implementation of these covered activities may result in impacts to five endangered species: the slender-horned spineflower, Santa Ana River woolly-star, cactus wren, California gnatcatcher and San Bernardino kangaroo rat. Approval of the Wash Plan would provide the District with an Incidental Take Permit (ITP) from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) under Section 10(a)(1)(B) of the Federal Endangered Species Act, and allow the Conservation District to extend such take coverage to other participating entities implementing covered projects through a Certificate of Inclusion process. The SEIR adds to and revises the 2008 EIR approved by the Conservation District over 10 years ago. The Department of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) is recruiting volunteer advocates who will be trained and certified to investigate and monitor long-term care facilities and resolve complaints on behalf of residents of skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. Ombudsmen investigate reports

of abuse, neglect or mistreatment of individuals in long-term care facilities. They also monitor nursing homes and board and care facilities regularly to ensure residents understand their rights and other free services available to them. Volunteers must be over the age of 18, submit to a free background check and not have worked in a long-term care facility for at least one year. Free training is available to obtain state certification with classes forming in the San Bernardino area. Schedules are flexible and include evenings and weekends.
