Arrowhead Regional Medical Center expands dialysis services and receives five stars from Medicare

A

rrowhead Regional Medical Center’s (ARMC) Dialysis Outpatient Center recently expanded from eight to 24 hemodialysis treatment stations and will hold an Open House from noon – 1 p.m. on Aug. 30, to celebrate its expansion. With ARMC receiving more than 3,500 dialysis patient visits each year, increasing the number of treatment stations gives San Bernardino County residents with kidney disease better access to this life-sustaining therapy. In addition, Medicare recently noted a five-star rating for the Arrowhead Dialysis Outpatient Center. “The ability to increase the number of dialysis treatment stations

at ARMC enables us to accommodate more patients,” said ARMC Dialysis Manager, Edgar Chan. “This ultimately helps to reduce stress and enables patients to lead fuller lives while managing their disease, since they won’t have to travel to other facilities further from home to get treatment.”

While approximately 30 million people in the United States have kidney disease, nearly 700,000 of them have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), in which the kidneys no longer work as they should to eliminate waste and unwanted water from the blood. ESRD requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to stay alive. Dialysis is the medical process of eliminating the waste and excess

water from the blood.

The Medicare star rating shows how well a dialysis center delivers care compared to the national average. The five-star rating means a dialysis center has a quality of care that is considered much above average compared to other facilities. ARMC’s Dialysis Outpatient Center operates seven days a week. Patients typically undergo dialysis three times per week, which takes four to five hours per visit. Visit www.arrowheadmedcenter.org, or call (909) 580-3911, for more information. The hospital is located at 400 North Pepper Avenue in Colton.

Surviving the first days of school - a guide for parents By Shelby Horton

B

ack to School is an exciting time for students as they begin the next phase of their lives, but it can be a difficult time for parents. Many parents struggle with the challenges school life will bring their children, from preschool to college it’s never easy. There will never be the perfect first day but there are some ways parents can be prepared for their child’s “First Day of School.” Many parents fear that moment where their four-year-old child clings to their leg as they lead them to the unfamiliar world known as school. There will be struggling, begging, and plenty of tears - it can be a heartbreaking moment for parents. “The best thing for a parent to do is walk them to class, give them goodbye hugs and kisses and trust

us to take care of the rest,” said a Kindergarten teacher, who would like to remain anonymous. “It’s hard, they’re your babies, but if you’re distressed at leaving them with their new teachers they’ll be just as upset. By the end of the day, we can assure you, we will love them as much as you do.” There is no perfect way to deal with this but there are ways to make the transition a little easier. Start by talking to your child about school and introducing them to activities that will become part of their routine soon. Such as sitting quietly while listening to a story, practicing how to use scissors, and sharing toys with other children. These will become essential in their school routine and helping them cope with the change. But no matter how prepared they are for the classroom, many will inevitable cry when faced with

being dropped off at school for the first time. Pre-school and Kindergarten teachers have seen it for years and reassure parents that the kids will adjust to their new exciting life at school. Elementary and middle school will flash by before you know it, leaving you with the daunting first day of high school. High school is anything but the way they portray it in the movies but it is an exciting and confusing time for a teenager. In the awkward stages of being a teenager going through puberty, there is also social media and technology to document it all. It was stressful for parents when they were teenagers, and its stressful for their kids. “Be an encouragement and a support to your child, but even then, kids sometimes don’t listen, so form strong alliances with their teachers, counselors, and administrators,” said Lucy Leyva, a

Colton High School teacher. “Try to be a coach..tough, supportive, and consistently pushing them to achieve their dreams.” Creating an environment that helps students focus is essential to success according to Peter Goldkorn, Colton High School teacher. Goldkorn recommends making a quiet place for them to do homework or just read to help them focus. Soon that little kid is all grown up and going to college headed down that path to adulthood. This can be nerve wracking for parents as their babies begin to leave the nest. However, students will begin to realize how much they need their parents’ help but will struggle to ask for it. Many college students feel immense pressure to succeed and not be a failure to their parents. College students often forget to take care of themselves the way their parents did

while focusing on school. “Don’t let your kids forget about self-care, that’s really important because it's easy to overwork yourself and become burnt out when focusing on your dreams, “said Emmelyn Hernandez, a college graduate. “Remind your kids that physical and mental health is so important, also to get plenty of sleep.” Hernandez goes on to explain how college kids feel so much pressure to become a success and a functioning adult. But being in college doesn’t make them an adult and they will come to realize that, so as parents be there for when they stumble. Raising children is no easy task and they will not always ask for help because they want to prove they can do it on their own. However, being supportive and with your arms out in case of a stumble can guarantee some school days.

COMMUNITY COMMENTARY You can email letters to editor@iecn.com. Please include your name and city of residence. Anonymous letters will not be printed. Consider the children before approving another warehouse

The journey from school to home is now a dreadful one for parents and students. Cars, buses, and diesel trucks all converge on Bloomington’s busiest streets for afternoon traffic jams that seem to last forever. Annoying traffic congestions are inevitable signs of the small town’s commercial growth. Unfortunately, the development we’re seeing occurs in the form of industry, which comes at the cost of our children’s health. That’s why San Bernardino County’s latest proposal to rezone 17 acres of land for the purpose of bringing further warehouse development on Slover Avenue is a terrible idea. More high cubed warehouses will not only further clog up roads, but also compromise the health and safety of Colton Joint Unified School District families. Researchers at USC found that children living in the Inland Valley have some of the slowest lung development and capacity statewide. While developers can come and go as they please, Bloomington children and their families are exposed to diesel particulate matter that causes asthma and lung cancer. As an advocate, I’ve made it my duty to protect school children from water and air pollution. We should be pushing for innovative measures that will help reduce our emission output and create long term sustainable jobs. Why place all our eggs in one basket? Colton Joint Unified School

District has already proven that advanced methods of technology could have great impacts on communities. Installing solar panels at school sites is a fun, engaging way to introduce students to engineering and electrical career fields. Introducing cleaner technology, such as electric trucks, at warehouses can have that same lasting effect. This could only be done, however, if our leaders take into account feedback from constituents. Sadly, concerns relating to warehouse proliferation and ideas on how to address air pollution have fallen on deaf ears. Despite vast opposition from community about the health and safety of Zimmerman Elementary School students, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors still allowed for a warehouse to be constructed approximately 100 feet away from the campus. Warehouse development could be the legacy left behind by the current Board of Supervisors--an inheritance that may bring “progress through the suffering and demise of children. As a father of four, I plead with the Supervisors to think of the future and vote #NoToRezone. Randall Ceniceros Area One Trustee for the Colton Joint Unified School District Board of Education

Suppor ting a better Bloomington for our r esidents and childr en For the past several years, the Bloomington Municipal Advisory Council (MAC) has been working hard to improve our community. As MAC members, we volunteer our time to meet with business owners, residents, and county departments to find ways to support our community. In total, MAC members have lived in Bloomington more than 150 years and we know the needs and wishes of our community. While the County has invested millions of dollars in a new state of the art library, baseball fields, and senior housing in Bloomington, we still do not have nearly enough municipal services. This is because our community does not generate enough revenue to cover the limited services we currently receive. The MAC has been working with the County to find ways to increase revenues so we can have improved services, such as a dedicated Sheriff’s patrol, more Code Enforcement to deal with illegal businesses and clean up blighted areas, along with increased services for our seniors and children. These are services that the vast majority of our residents have consistently asked for. We also want to see more infrastructure improvements including street lighting, better roads, and sidewalks so our children can walk to school safely. As part of this strategy to move Bloomington forward, we are requiring new projects to commit to community benefit agreements with the money staying in Bloomington. These benefit agreements will bring enhanced infrastructure and services to Bloomington. This approach is a first for the County and we are leading the way. The first project to include a benefit agreement will soon be coming to the Board of Supervisors. It is a warehouse project on Slover Avenue – on an existing industrial corridor next to other industrial properties and near the Union Pacific Railyard. This location is exactly where a warehouse should be located, on an industrial truck route near the freeway. The Bloomington MAC 1HƂEG 2JQPG

members unanimously support this project. The project has been studied by experts, and a comprehensive Environmental Impact Report has been generated with state-of-the-art mitigation measures. It is designed with a substantial set-back that is seven times the required limit to minimize any impacts to the four houses behind the project. The project will pay development impact fees for area transportation improvements including a signal light on Slover. A large amount of money from increased property taxes generated by the project will go to the CJUSD to support our children's education, health and safety. Additionally, the project will contribute $30,000 annually to be used only in Bloomington for enhanced services, $225,000 for future public works projects in our community and will construct approximately 300 feet in sidewalks to complete a safe route to school for our Bloomington High School students. Some residents have expressed concerns about the project. We appreciate those who have asked good questions. Constructive feedback has helped make this project better. Unfortunately, some outside groups are using this project to present a false narrative to uninformed residents and are using scare tactics to frighten residents into thinking that some “greedy developer is “threatening to steal their homes and “rob people of their land. The truth is no one, under any

circumstances, can be forced to sell their property to anyone else against their will. These same people, that claim to be for the environment, conveniently turn a blind eye to the unpermitted, unregulated 130-plus illegal trucking operations located next to our schools and in the middle of our residential neighborhoods. These illegal diesel truck operations have an estimated 2,000 trucks a day traveling through Bloomington and are by far the biggest source of environmental pollution and truck traffic in Bloomington. The MAC has asked this outside environmental group to work with us in our efforts to rid our community of these major polluters, yet we have not received one word of support from those that claim to be trying to protect our children. I ask you to look at the true motivations of this outside group, are they really here to help our community, or their own political agenda? I encourage my fellow Bloomington residents to take the time to learn the facts and make up their own minds based on what’s best for Bloomington as a whole, not on someone else’s outside personal or political agenda. Please do not allow people with outside motivations to divide our community for their own personal or political gain. Our efforts to improve our community are too important to allow outsiders with an agenda to derail the efforts of many of us that have worked so hard to provide enhanced services, infrastructure improvements and job opportunities for our residents. In closing, this project is a win for our entire community and I encourage residents and elected leaders to focus on solutions to the real challenges we face, instead of resorting to empty rhetoric and partisan politics. As for the members of the Bloomington MAC, we will continue to make the best decisions to support a better Bloomington for our residents and children. Gary Grossich Bloomington MAC Member

Wor ds t o T hi nk A bout : H umo r ab oard shi p right where she had left it. She rushed with it to where I was and we both roared with laughter. Another story. Our Princess ship was docked at Victoria, Vancouver. Everyone but Stella and I were ashore. We were on the fifteenth deck having a buffet lunch. We were on the starboard side, by a huge window.

G. W. Abersold, Ph.D.

I’ve been on 146 cruises, most of them as a lecturer. There are many benefits in cruising. The price, the food, the entertainment, the destinations and of course, new friends. Amazingly, Stella and I have also experienced many humorous events. For example, upon getting on the ship, someone like me must use a walker, I had to switch to a wheel chair. Upon getting on the chair, I left my walker with Stella. Upon getting to the final deck, Stella asked me about my walker. She had left it at the entrance. She could not go back down without a guard. Finally, she went down and to her amazement the walker was

A Norwegian ship had docked beside us, about 30 feet away. Suddenly the tug boat that had docked the Norwegian ship broke loose and the ship began to drift toward us. People were aghast. Hands covered their mouths and Stella and I just watched. It came closer and suddenly banged against our ship. Several tenders were splintered. Three glass windows also on the ship cracked. The scene was overwhelming and watchers broke out with hilarity. Fortunately, no one was injured. Later repairs were made and within two days later we continued our voyage. When I was lecturing I always began with a magic trick. On one cruise I had two trick knives with me. On boarding the ship, we were searched for contraband and the inspectors found my knives. They laughed while taking the knives. As I left they stopped and

asked me how the tricks worked. I was torked off. I said something like, “no way. Why should I show you how the trick works when you took them from me.” Stella and I laughed - later. We (Stella and me) have been through the Panama Canal about twenty times. I remember two very funny events. The first one involved when I was doing a trick that involved two spoons. I can put them end to end and make them whirl around. I offer $20.00 to anyone that can duplicate the trick. Strobe lights were all over the place. When I started the whirling, I dropped them and the bright lights affected my sight. I could not retrieve them. I yelled, “Stella, Stella.” She came running from the back of the theater and salvaged my act by picking up the spoons. Embarrassment was mine, but later we both laughed. Another humorous event happened off the coast of Costa Rica. I had told the audience about Jurassic Park II, when two dinosaurs escape the island and made it to the jungle in Costa Rica. I enlarged the scene by telling the audience how Stella had taken a jungle trip and escaped. Two dinosaurs had scratched her back seriously.

Caden’s Cor ner An inte r v ie w w ith Ange ls T V B r oadc a ste r Victor Rojas

I recently sat down with Los Angeles Angels play-by-play television broadcaster, Victor Rojas, for a pregame interview: Growing up with a father who played baseball professionally, did you always know you wanted to be a broadcaster? Not a broadcaster, I wanted to be a player myself. It wasn’t until later on in life that I decided to get into broadcasting. With four boys, three brothers overall, a lot of baseball was played going up. That is for sure. You were the very first person to appear on MLB network when it launched, how exciting was that and were you nervous? It was very scary, so yes, I was very nervous. I had never done television before on a full time basis, I had done just radio broadcasting. So when I got hired by MLB network I kind of had to learn on the fly. Pretty scary to be on that stage on the fly when we opened the show on the stage that first time.

You have spent time as a player, coach, and even the general manager of an independent team. Do you think this diverse background gives you a unique perspective that helps in broadcasting? I think it does. Growing up in a baseball family provides most of my background. But I think from the different things that I have done in the game, has given me the opportunity to look at things a little bit differently. I can get a player’s perspective, versus a general manger perspective, versus a broadcaster prospective. So I think it has kind of helped me round out my background a little bit. What advice do you have for kids out there like me who want to become a broadcaster? Keep doing things like this! A lot of interviews, a lot of reps. I would even do games if I were you sitting in the stands. Do play by play into a microphone and go back and listen to it day in and day out. That is kind of how I did it. I

didn’t go to school for broadcasting. I had to figure it out on my own. When I was working for the independent league team that was the first time I had ever done broadcasting. That is what I did. I basically went back and listened to my tape and listened to how bad they were. They sounded nothing like a major league broadcaster. But that is how you learn. You self-critique yourself to get better. What is your favorite memory in your time with the Angels? Wow. I would have to say probably the Jered Weaver no-hitter here against the Minnesota Twins. Albert Pujols getting his 600th homerun here against Ervin Santana was pretty cool. But probably the Weaver one, only because he was drafted by the Angels, he is a SoCal kid, and to do it here at home with his mom and dad and wife here was pretty cool. What do you think the future has in store for the Angels the rest of the season? Well, it has been a tough year

Always when I finished my lecture I would tell the audience to turn and hug a couple people with a great hug. At that moment, an elderly lady turned to Stella and started to hug her. Suddenly another woman stopped her and said, “Don’t hug Stella. She recently had her back scrapped by a huge DINO.” Obviously, we laughed and still do, when I tell it. I’ll never forget a cruise that included Richard Simmons with 250 of his overweight group of people (men and women). They always ate their breakfasts and dinners together. But at the buffet lunches, they were on their own Richard never was close by. I’m a pretty big guy. As they rushed the buffet line I was roughly shoved out of the way unceremoniously especially by the women. The ladies wore skimpy bikinis and the men skimpy thongs. Watching the men and women gobble down the forbidden food was hilarious. I often refer to the Carnival Cruise Ships as the Booze Cruises. We (Stella and I) decided to try one simply to see if I could make it on a smaller facility. Usually I have a handicapped room. There were several items on this cruise. Ninety percent of the cruisthis year. Hopefully they can play a little better baseball over the next six weeks. They have played pretty good here on this home-stand. They have won four straight, so we will see what happens. But overall if you can make some sort of a run somehow - if Shohei can come back and pitch a

ers were young adults. Most of them were always “halfswacked.” The girls all were scantily dressed-short shorts, braless and flirty. Several of the girls were doing the pole dance. Couples were monopolizing the handicapped restrooms for thirty minutes at a time. There were ten amazed nuns watching them with eyes wide open. The food was lousy. We heard two girls talking at the end of the cruise. One said, “Do you remember the red-haired guy?” The other girl said, “No, I don’t even remember the cruise.” Finally, my last laughter for this article. Stella and I were leaving Gold, Oregon and heading for Portland, Oregon. The ride was beautiful with abundance of large trees, and very few stopping places. Stella developed an urgent need to stop for a restroom There wasn’t a resting place. Finally, we came into a huge comfort shopping place. As we started to exit the car we saw a huge figure of Paul Bunyan. As if he could sense our plight, we heard a loud voice say, “the restrooms are straight ahead.” We hardly made it for our laughing. Amen. Selah. So be it. little in September and add to the offensive side of things maybe they can make some noise against the A’s and maybe the Mariners. Okay! Thanks for the interview! My pleasure, buddy!

“Land, Water y Comunidad” Explores Impor tance of LWCF to Latino and Urban Communities Highlights Need for Congress to Reauthorize the Fund before It Expires in Sept.

A

new film screened in Redlands highlights the impact the Land and Water Conservation Fund has had on Latino and urban communities throughout the United States and emphasizes why Congress needs to permanently reauthorize the program before it expires at the

end of September and why it should to be fully funded. LWCF has supported more than 41,000 national, state and local parks and projects across the nation and its absence would have a significant impact on outdoor access and the conservation of public lands. The film “Land, Water y Comu-

nidad” profiles five LWCF sites from around the country, including Sand to Snow National Monument in the California desert, and explores the relationship diverse communities have with LWCF sites – what it means to them, how they enjoy them and the impact it would have if these lands were not

available. The screening was followed by a panel discussion featuring both national and local experts. “For many Latinos and other diverse urban communities, sites funded through the Land and Water Conservation Fund often provide their only means to experience the outdoors,” said Maite Arce, president and CEO of Hispanic Access Foundation. “From having places to connect with nature, spend time with family, enjoy outdoor recreation or explore their cultural heritage, LWCF isn’t just about protecting pieces of land or providing specific resources for development, it’s about the connection we have with these places and what they represent for each individual. These sites matter to people – and the loss of the program would be felt for generations to come.” Since its passage in 1965, the Land and Water Conservation Fund has gone on to become one of the nation’s greatest tools for providing access to the outdoors and helping to preserve the lands and waters we love. It has supported more than 41,000 parks and projects nationwide and over 1,200 in California. LWCF is funded through offshore oil and gas drilling royalties meaning that COURTESY PHOTO there has been no cost to taxpayLeft to Right: Chela Garcia (Director of Conservation Programs, Hispanic Access Foundation), ers. However, while the fund is Peter Satin (Land Stewardship Supervisor, Mojave Desert Land Trust), Christine Tamara (San capped at $900 million a year, Bernardino County Project Coordinator, Hispanic Access Foundation), Jack Thompson (Regional Director, The Wildlands Conservancy).

Congress must authorize the amount the fund receives annually. However, it has only been fully funded twice. Despite that, LWCF has been used to support some of America’s most iconic landscapes like the Grand Canyon and Joshua Tree National Parks, Mojave National Preserve, numerous Civil War battlefields, historic sites like Monroe Elementary School in Kansas -- the school attended by Linda Brown, of Brown v. Board of Education -- and countless local community projects like swimming pools, trails, parks, playgrounds, and sports fields. “More than 50 years ago, Congress created the fund as a bipartisan promise to safeguard this country’s natural areas, water resources cultural heritage and economies,” said Arce. “Now is the time for Congress to set aside politics again and stand up for the vast majority of Americans and all our diverse communities who agree that the Land and Water Conservation Fund is essential to protect the places we love and the way of life future generations deserve. It’s time for LWCF to be permanently reauthorized and fully funded.” The full film "Land, Water y Comunidad" will be released publicly on September 3, 2018, but the California segment is currently available at: www.HispanicAccess.org/LWCF.

Iconic “Ice Cream Guys” provide enter tainment, refr eshment during Little Lea gue Wester n Regionals

T

hey are colorful, they are entertaining, they are unique, and with this year’s triple digits of heat in San Bernardino, they maybe the MVPs of the Regionals. The iconic “Ice Cream Guys” started 24 years ago, and was inspired by the army of volunteers that helped run the Little League Western Regional Baseball Tournament. Jim Brooks and Wayne Lallier wanted to do their part to help. Several years later, Dave Kok joined as a substitute and has been helping out full-time with Mr. Brooks for multiple years as Mr. Lallier could no longer do it. Next year, the group is hoping to get the entire crew together next year to celebrate the 25th year and a Golden Anniversary. While looking into how they can help out at the Tournament, the group saw that the ice cream bars sitting in the concession stands were not selling and saw an old ice cream cart in storage not being used. From there, an idea was born and a tradition started. The first year, the costume was made of ice cream bar boxes worn as hats on the top of their heads. From there it just got better. Paint, decorations, a fixed-up cart, and crazy outfits can now be seen throughout Al Houghton Stadium as the group sells ice cream on hot August nights. One night, it might be two guys in baseball uniforms. Another night, nothing less than formal attire is worn. Their favorite costume? A Pirate. Every year since 1995, they have been out selling ice cream and entertaining the fans. Soon after,

their act caught the attention of the Little League International staff in Williamsport and they were off to the Little League Baseball® World Series to entertain the fans back East. In addition to his role as an “Ice Cream Guy,” Mr. Brooks has also gotten to umpire in the 2001 Little League Baseball World Series. The “Ice Cream Guys” even have a thoroughbred horse race named after them. Mr. Brook’s daughter works for Oak Lawn Race Track in Hot Springs, Ark., and several years ago she told the story about her Dad and the “Ice Cream Guys” to the Board who honored them by naming one of their races, the “Ice Cream Guys

Classic.” To the visitors of California, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, as well as the millions of viewers of ESPN the “Ice Cream Guys” are wellknown to Little League fans from around the world. While their visibility has grown, the notoriety has not changed their volunteer spirit that helps make the Western Regional Tournament the event that it is. Every year, they continue to get excited seeing the smiling faces of both kids and adults. Even after over two decades of service, they are proud to say that “every year is still fun and exciting. We have such fun mingling with the fans.”

Redlands Community Hospital receives $100K grant from Stater Bros. Charities to fight cancer in I.E.

S

tater Bros. Charities and the Inland Women Fighting Cancer (IWFC) awarded the Redlands Community Hospital Foundation (RCHF) a $100,000 grant to purchase a Savi SCOUT system, a wire-free breast localization system to improve breast cancer biopsy and lumpectomies for patients. Peter Van Helden, president and CEO of Stater Bros., Nancy Varner and Annie Sellas, founders of the IWFC, presented the check to Jim Holmes, president and CEO of Redlands Community Hospital, RCHF board members, and staff.

The Savi SCOUT wire-free breast localization system is the first and only non-radioactive implant that uses micro impulse radar technology to provide realtime surgical guidance during breast surgery. Placed up to 30 days before surgery by a radiologist, a tiny reflector is inserted into the breast. During surgery, the system’s hand piece accurately detects the location of the reflector and the tumor. The ability to strategically plan the incision can result in less tissue removed during surgery, a shorter procedure, more precision, easier recovery, and better overall outcomes.

Previously, women needed to arrive several hours before their operation to have physicians thread a wire into their breast (known as wire localization), and then wait. The Savi SCOUT system eliminates the wait time and the discomfort of the wire. Each year, Stater Bros. Charities, a non-profit that supports the critical needs of the Southern Californians, teams up with IWFC to host the Believe Walk, a communitybased effort that attracts more than 12,000 participants to raise funds for cancer treatment and support services for Inland Empire communities.

“Redlands Community Hospital completes an estimated 5,800 mammograms annually and nearly 400 breast biopsies, onethird of them positive for cancer,” says Jan Opdyke, president of the RCHF. “The support we receive from Stater Bros. Charities’ gives us the opportunity to provide access to the some of the latest technology and improve our patients’ comfort and outcomes.” The American Cancer Society estimates that 252,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in women during 2017, resulting in more than 40,000 deaths. Many of those deaths might have been

prevented with earlier detection and diagnosis. Redlands Community Hospital’s Women’s Health Imaging Center is a 3,300 square-foot facility that provides women with mammograms, breast biopsies, bone density screening exams and other procedures. The center provides no-cost health education for women and allows patients to receive all necessary imaging services in one location.
