Since then, I’ve joined my colleagues in working to create a fairer economy, fighting to lower the costs of health care and prescription drugs, standing up for our veterans and seniors, and rooting out corruption in Washington. Recognize childhood cancer all year long, not just during the month of September By Manny B. Sandoval

H

ighland resident Denise Sandoval says it’s important to recognize and remember childhood cancer all year long and not just during the month of December. On Wednesday, December 18, Sandoval donated 23 stuffed Scentsy Buddies to Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern California (CCFSC), to be disseminated to children in the cancer ward at Loma Linda University Children’s Health. “It’s important to remember children who are battling cancer and fighting for their lives all year long and not just during September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month,” said Sandoval. For many years, childhood can-

cer has been overlooked and underrepresented in both the media and in-regards to funding childhood cancer research. “I support the awareness of all cancers and believe all types of cancers should be represented in an equal light. Since childhood cancer only affects one percent of the entire population fighting cancer…it receives less attention than it deserves,” Sandoval said. According to the American Cancer Society, childhood cancers make up less than 1 percent of all cancers diagnosed each year. That 1 percent is not much of a market for drugmakers, who rack up an estimated $1.4 billion in out-ofpocket costs while bringing a novel drug to market. They would never recoup that treating the 700 children diagnosed with neuroblastoma annu-

ally, or the 100 diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, a deadly brain tumor. It was until 2018, wheren major enterprises, such as Amazon and the American Childhood Cancer Organization, began an innovative state level approach to overcome the disparity between adult and childhood cancer research. The initiative, Why Not Kids, has been successful in bringing fourth policies and funding for children battling cancer. “As the holiday season approaches and when it concludes…it’s important to remember everyone. Especially those little fighters, fighting for their lives in a hospital bed,” concluded Sandoval.

New year, new laws for firearms-related regulatory and enforcement activities. Gun buying: Under AB 164, anyone prohibited from buying a firearm in another state will not be allowed to purchase a firearm in California.

Maryjoy Duncan Managing Editor

As California begins 2020, new laws will go into effect addressing issues like housing, gun ownership, healthcare, and more. Here's a look at new state laws to know at the start of the new year: HOUSING Rent control: Under AB 1482, California communities without rent control will now be covered by statewide rent control protections. Rent increases will be limited to 5 percent per year plus inflation and never more than 10 percent total. The state law won't apply to housing built within the last 15 years. HEALTH Healthcare for immigrants - California will be the first state to offer Medicaid coverage for low-income adults 19 to 25 years old regardless of immigration status under SB 104. Californians will be required to have health insurance or pay a penalty on their 2021 tax returns. Doctors will be required to fill out a new standardized form for parents who want to exempt their kids from vaccinations. Doctors with five or more exemptions will be reviewed by the state. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SB 273 extends the statute of limitations for domestic violence felonies from 3 to 5 years. AB 218 extends the statute of limitations for adult victims of childhood sexual abuse to report their abusers from age26 to age 40. SB 439 ends the prosecution of children under age 12 who commit crimes other than murder and forcible sexual assault. Convicted felons who have completed their sentences, parole, probation and supervision will no longer be disqualified from serving as jurors under SB 310. FIREARMS Price to purchase: Firearm-related sales will increase $31.19 in California under AB 1669, to be used

Firearm storage: Anyone who owns a firearm that is taken out of the home by a child or "prohibited person" can be charged with a crime and be banned from owning a gun for 10 years under SB 172 . AT WORK Minimum wage: Under SB 3, minimum wage workers will see another increase in their paycheck, as the wage rises $11 to $12 an hour in California for companies with 25 or fewer employees and $13 an hour for larger companies. Gig economy workers: AB 5 requires independent or contract workers to be considered employees and not independent workers if the employer controls the work, if the work is part of the company's core business, or if the employer directs the worker in their job.

Make America impeach again

Deplorable Donald Trump Is a self-pitiful disgrace Two Articles of Impeachment Right in Trump’s angry orange face! Traitor Trump always blames His crackpot crimes on anyone else. So stay away from 5th Avenue, Among the many radical economic plans offered by various Democratic presidential candidates, Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have proposed an annual wealth tax on billionaires (and other “ultra-rich Americans). Sanders has bluntly stated, “There should be no billionaires.

Look at capitalism’s track record: It takes many fewer hours of labor today to buy an everwider range of consumer products than it did just a generation ago. And who brought about this incredible enrichment of the masses? If you say, “profit-seeking corporations and entrepreneurs, go to the head of the class. The few “billionaires among us are generally our greatest economic benefactors. They became wealthy delivering more value to more of their fellow man than the rest of us have. We should be grateful for them, instead of plotting the extinction of this rare breed. There are only two modes of taxation that uphold the principle of equal treatment before the law: 1) every citizen is taxed the same amount; 2) every citizen’s income is taxed at the same rate. We abandoned that principle in 1913 by adopting the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. That amendment incorporated the Marxian principle of a graduated or progressive income tax—that is, different rates for different citizens. (Note: “a heavy progressive or graduated income tax is point 2 in the 10-point plan of Marx and Engels published in the Communist Manifesto in 1848.) This is conscious and deliberate discrimination. And what is the “right or “just amount of discrimination? There is no self-evident, incontrovertible principle; rather, rates are determined by who has the most votes in Washington. This is the crude principle “might makes right, i.e., there are more of us than there are of you, so we can take what we want from you. As for un-American, the promise of the American Dream has always been that the sky is the limit, and that you don’t have to be born into a hereditary aristocracy to get rich. Sadly, presumptuous political panderers like Sanders and Warren show contempt for great achievers, and have the hubris to assert that politicians, not the people who created and earned wealth, should decide how that wealth should be spent. The proposals for billionaire wealth taxes represent the worst rather than the best in us. Yes, we have considerable economic challenges in our country, but cannibalizing the wealth creators who uplift our living standards is not the way forward. —Dr. Mark W. Loma Linda Univer sity Children’s Hospital r eceives 2019 Leapfrog Top Hospital Award “We are very honored to be again acknowledged as among the best children’s hospitals in the nation,” Perryman said. “We participate in numerous national quality and patient safety reporting efforts because we want to do better and be better for our babies, children, teens and their families. Recognition for a third time in a row

demonstrates that our collective work to establish a culture of safety and quality is taking hold in a transformative way.” Additionally, three consecutive years is the longest streak for receiving the award — an honor held only by two hospitals, including Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.

Serving the largest geographic region in California, Loma Linda University Children's Hospital provides all aspects of care to nearly 100,000 patients every year.

oma Linda University Children’s Hospital was named a Top Children’s Hospital nationally for the third consecutive year by The Leapfrog Group — an independent hospital watchdog organization — on December 17, highlighting its achievements in patient safety and quality. The Leapfrog Top Hospi-

tal awards are widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive honors American hospitals can receive. Approximately 2,100 hospitals across the nation were considered for the award, and Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital was one of only 10 children’s hos-

pitals to be recognized by The Leapfrog Group.

Scott Perryman, senior vice president and administrator for LLU ig announcement! The Children’s Hospital, said the reCommunity Foundation ceiving of the award was only is making some bold made possible through the efforts changes. For the first time in 19 and commitment from the hospi- years, the Foundation will go by a different name. Our new name – tal’s staff. drumroll! – is the Inland Empire Community Foundation (IECF)! We’re still doing the same great work serving the Inland Empire, but now with a new name, logo, tagline and website!

A reminder to celebrate the holiday season safely

Two weeks ago our family of donors and supporters gathered at our holiday reception for the “big reveal.” It was a special evening for the Foundation and comes after nearly a year and a half of vital input from donors, advisors, board members, staff and community stakeholders. As an organization focused on growing philanthropy and collaboration in the IE, now is the time to reintroduce ourselves to donors who may not know us, to regional funders who want to invest in our area and to partners in the community that want help our region thrive and be more resilient. Our rebranding efforts, we believe, are helping us accomplish this. When we began the process of rebranding the organization, it became clear that our name and visual identity needed to better reflect the region we serve and appeal to donors unaware of our existence. One of the main challenges we wanted to address was our name; people would often always ask, “where is your foundation?” Our new name communicates a powerful message that we are the IE. We know the IE brand has value and provides a sense a place that is embraced by our donors, nonprofits and businesses alike. And we discovered in the process that young people are reclaiming the name Inland Empire, which we think bodes well for our shared future in the IE.

Along with a new name it was time for a new look. Our vibrantly-colored logo reflects a contemporary mark that unifies the region as a forward-thinking and diverse community. Furthermore, we wanted to convey the Foundation as accessible, approachable and friendly by displaying “ie” in lowercase; and with “CF” in uppercase this demonstrates our organization as solid, established and here for the long term. The logo is also reinforced by our new tagline, “where giving grows,” which symbolizes the power of giving over time. Although we have a new name and brand identity, we are the same Foundation and a trusted steward of the region’s charitable resources. More than ever, we are committed to those who care passionately about benefiting our community forever. Our donors will always be the heartbeat of the organization and we are proud to be your partner in charitable giving. In addition to grantmaking, the Foundation will continue to serve as a leader that brings together key stakeholders to determine community needs and act as a catalyst for positive change. Our work in addressing important social and community issues through Census 2020, Listos California, Inland Economic Growth and Opportunity (IEGO), Youth Grantmakers, Graduate Success and the Women’s Giving Fund are just a few examples of that. We are building a community foundation for the Inland Empire with more intention than ever, and tackling the issues that need powerful, thoughtful philanthropy as a partner. We are grateful for your generosity and look forward to all that we can do together to make our region great.

Words to Think About: Stor y of a Christmas carol From this information Hutcheson introduces a famous character from the 1800’s, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. A casual observation of events is depressing.

I

G. W. Abersold, Ph.D.

am indebted to Sue Moore for sharing an article written by Chip Hutcheson, retired newspaper publisher and current managing editor of the Western Recorder in Kentucky. Chip vividly describes the current events we are aware of in our country and the world. To say the least, we are ashamed and greatly concerned about them. In his article Chip details a few of those we daily live with. The President’s impeachment, the increasing gun violence, targeting schools and churches, allegations of sexual abuse by high profile people, genocide in many countries throughout the world, tragedies of human trafficking, within our own borders, the increasing persecution of Christians around the world. These are but a few reminders while the emphasis at this time of the year, we think of “peace on earth.”

“The tragedies that Longfellow experienced and how they inspired one of the favorite Christmas carols, we sing to this day.” Chip follows these words with a demanding challenge. “Hopefully no matter what your situation is today, the story of his Christmas carol will be an encouragement to you.” In 1861, a series of tragedies became a part of Longfellow’s life. His wife, Fannie Elizabeth, died tragically when her dress caught fire. Longfellow desperately tried to save her life, but failed. His own body was severely burned, primarily his face. He later grew a beard to cover his facial scars. Another tragedy that swept the U.S.A. was the Civil War in full force. He hated the war, but he was for the end of slavery. His first wife, Mary Storer had died of a miscarriage in 1836. In 1843 he married Frances Appleton. The deaths of Mary and Fanny was devastating for him and also to their six children, es-

pecially their oldest son Charles. In March 1863, Charles enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 18. His parents were unaware of his enlistment. By the way, all six children were born to Frances and Longfellow. Longfellow eventually signed his approval for Charles to become a soldier. Shortly after his enlistment, he impressed his commander so much that he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant. Tragedy hit the family again when Charles was victimized with typhoid fever. Eventually he recovered and rejoined the Union’s forces. On December 1, 1863, Charles was severely wounded in his spine and the doctors said he would probably be paralyzed. Recently widowed, the 57 year old Longfellow, with his oldest son on the verge of paralysis, had an emotional affect. It was on Christmas. He wrote a poem that he hoped would capture the affect of his traumas. He recorded the moment when he heard the church bells ringing. He was surely depressed because of his heartache, the Civil War, his

grief over his wife’s death and his son’s illness. His confusion was shattered as he heard a choir singing, “peace on earth,” (Luke 2:14). Hutcheson says, “He observed a world of injustice and violence that seemed to contradict this optimistic outlook.” Longfellow is recorded as saying, “In despair I bowed my head. There is no peace on earth. Hate is strong and mocks the words of “peace on earth, goodwill to men.” These words were poetic. He had the insight that inspiration brings. Fortunately, the poem doesn’t end with the element of despair. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born on February 27, 1882. He was recognized as a great scholar, a novelist and an outstanding poet. As a poet he rivaled Walt Whitman, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson as his contemporaries. However, none of them were so prolific. Perhaps my favorite poem is tied in with the Season of Christmas. On Christmas Day, 1863, he was inspired to write the poem, “I heard the Bells On Christmas Day.” Chris Hutcheson says; In the poem Longfellow recognized that “God is not dead, nor doth He

sleep.” That statement is just as true today as it was then. Here are four verses of the seven in the poem. 1. I heard the bells on Christmas day, Their old, familiar carols play, And wild and sweet Of peace on earth, good-will to men! 2. And thought how, as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along The unbroken song Of peace on earth, good-will to men! 3. Till ringing, singing on its way, The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, A chant sublime of peace on earth, good-will to men! 4. Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: “God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men.” Amen. Selah. So be it.

SBVC Foundation inducts newest Alumni & Athletics 'Hall of Famer s'

S

an Bernardino Valley College is proud to usher in distinguished graduates to the Alumni Association and Athletics Halls of Fame, each recognized for their prize-winning accomplishments and service to the community. SBVC Foundation Board President Beverly Powell said the Foundation is honored to partner with the Athletics department to laud the achievements of SBVC alumni and former studentathletes. "The opportunity to showcase some of Valley College's best 'success stories' not only helps the Foundation raise funds necessary to help students achieve their dreams - but events highlighting our alumni also help inspire our current SBVC students to envision their own success and believe their own dreams are possible," she said. Inducted into the SBVC Alumni Association Hall of Fame is Dr. Louie F. Rodríguez, interim dean of the Graduate School of Education at UC Riverside. He received recognition for being a catalyst for many academic initiatives to benefit the community. He also serves as Bank of America chair in Educational Leadership, Policy, and Practice in the UCR Graduate School of Education. Among numerous awards and various posts, Dr. Rodriguez is also the Founding Director of the Center for Educational Transformation at UCR. His educational foundation began at SBVC. Later transferred to California State San Bernardino, where, as a McNair Scholar, he focused on research to help histori-

cally marginalized students. From there, Dr. Rodriguez became a high school math teacher, and holds two master's degrees, along with a Ph.D in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from Harvard University. With his first years at SBVC campus, he recalls the indelible impact of a caring guidance counselor, Laura Gomez. He feels the primary objective for all students is to make the most of their academic goals, while never forgetting about what's most important in life. "Students, know who you are, identify a mentor, get connected to programs, dream big, surround yourself with excellence, and be a leader. After you graduate from SBVC, always find ways to give back to your community," says Dr. Louie F. Rodríguez. Inducted into the SBVC Athletics Hall of Fame are Kenneth Blumenthal, Michael Sola, Stan Sanchez, Eric Swanson, and 1982 SBVC Championship Football Team. Each of these athletes are acknowledged for both dedicating themselves to excellence in their sport, and also for their impact on the community and students. Former San Bernardino Valley College coach Kenneth Blumenthal has run the ball from the early days as captain of the Eisenhower High School football team in Rialto, and later as a student-athlete at San Bernardino Valley College. Through his journey, Blumenthal credits close friends, colleagues and faith for support through his remarkable athletic career at SBVC, where, under Head Coach Bob Smith, he set an unrivaled

three-decade record for the most tackles in one season. Following great success at the local campus, a football scholarship paved the way to Long Beach State, where Blumenthal earned his bachelor's in recreation, and another Bachelor's in kinesiology. He also holds a teaching credential from California State University, San Bernardino. Among his many posts, Blumenthal served at Rialto Frisbee Junior High and his alma mater Eisenhower High School. He also holds a Master's degree from Azusa Pacific University, and coached track in 1988 until he became full-time Defensive Coordinator/Head Track Coach in 1990. He is unmatched for conference championships. No other head coach has taken home as many wins as Blumenthal at SBVC, to which he acknowledges colleagues and coaches that have backed him along the way.
