n New Year’s Eve Tuesday, December 31, during the late afternoon hours, several hundred people gathered in the parking lot in front of the Ronald McDonald

House in Loma Linda to take part in The Unforgettables Foundation’s “20th Annual Light for Little Lives Memorial Walk”. There was a brief opening ceremony that included a welcome and introduction by the Unforgettable’s Founder

Chaplain Timothy Evans and several others who also welcomed the participants. At sunset, parents who have lost a child in 2019 released a dove into the sky. A larger dove release followed, as all the doves

Carlos Pastrano (12) from Bloomington, was selected to pull the little red wagon, leading hundreds of people making their way to the Campus Hill Church during the half-mile walk where formal ceremonies and recognitions were conducted. Carlos’ father Adam Pastrano got involved in The Unforgettables Foundation after experiencing a loss of a child. Adam has helped put on car shows through his car club benefitting The Unforgettables. The Loma Linda Fire Department escorted those making the walk, blocking traffic and encouraging participants. Among the crowd were the parents of Arianna Villalobos who held a portrait of their daughter Arianna (Ari), pictured being held by Jesus with her head resting on His shoulders. Ari passed away from cancer on Oct. 1, 2019. All the family members and friends wore T-shirts with the image of Ari and the words “Don’t be sorry for Ari, Be Saved by Jesus”. Not only does it have a great economic benefit for our airport, but it also provides great benefits for the residents of San Bernardino,” said Mayor Valdivia. “I hope to inspire our local residents to take advantage of this great opportunity and apply for the jobs that will be created. This development will provide a great renaissance for our economy and help us move towards a better, more prosperous future in San Bernardino.” The Inland Empire Economic Partnership (IEEP), an organization focused on economic development in the region, supports AllianceCalifornia efforts. IEEP President and CEO Paul Granillo noted, “The logistics industry has fueled the Inland Empire’s spectacular recovery by generating an estimated 84,000 new jobs – that’s nearly one out of every four new jobs – over the past 10 years. Eastgate will continue to grow the region’s economy in air cargo, so we can work closer to home and create good jobs for workers of all skill and education levels.” The development has been met with resistance from local organizations such as the Center for

The Loma Linda Crossroads Rotary Club and The Unforgettables Foundation presented the Top Doctor Award to Dr. Donald Case, Dr. Gerado Hizon, Dr. Chalmer McClure, and Dr. James Moynihan; the Christopher Kohlmeier Award was presented by the Redlands Optimist Club to Genesis Raine Easley; The Unforgettables Dr. Leonard Bailey Legacy Award was presented by Evans to Dr. Anees Razzouk.

“We’re not convinced by Hillwood and the SBIAA’s claims that this project will bring good-paying jobs, nor are we convinced of the FAA’s claims that Eastgate will not have severe air quality impacts on our communities,” remarked Ben Reynoso, Economic Justice Organizer for ICUC. “The approved ground lease fails to provide sufficient information that we trust will benefit our community. The lack of transparency throughout this entire approval process has left us extremely doubtful about any job guarantees at all.”

It is still unclear who the new tenant at the facility will be. Rumors are that it may be Amazon, but there is no confirmation.

The Commission’s decision concludes a multi-year environmental and community review process, which included input from the FAA, the South Coast Air Quality Management District, and many other resource agencies and community participants. SBIAA Commissioners are elected officials from the County

“A gag order making the public unaware who the ultimate tenant is for this project is extreme and wrongheaded for a government agency supposedly serving the people,” says Adrian Martinez of Earthjustice. “The San Bernardino International Airport Authority clearly does not care about meaningful public input and overall transparency by holding such a consequential meeting for such a massive project at an inconvenient time during the holidays with marginal notice.” This ground lease development with Hillwood Enterprises, L.P is 100% privately funded and includes approximately 100 acres of land. 658,500 square feet for the cargo sortation building, two 25,000 square foot ground support buildings and 41 acres of structured parking and gate positions. Initial monthly lease revenues from the ground lease are estimated to bring $2,587,804 annually and a 2.69% annual step in-

On aeronauticallyrestricted property, this was one of the more challenging yet truly vital elements of our multi-year revitalization efforts. It is a major step towards innovating a green, sustainable air cargo complex that flies and drives our economy without the use of public subsidies.” The project would require Hillwood to construct two new bridge crossings onto 3rd Street, on the west and east portions of the project site, including signal and traffic lane improvements. Proposed air operations include 12 daily flights initially, increasing up to 26 flights at full build-out. “The proposed lease gives Hillwood the right to use our airport runways, taxiways, ramps, public highways, and streets and bring airplane and truck pollution for decades to come without benefiting our community,” expressed Tammy Viescas, San Bernardino

resident. “We are not against development — we are for development that guarantees benefits for our community.” Principal lease terms are as follows: • Premises: 97.4 acres of land. • Initial Payment: 24 months at $112,000 per month, pre-paid and non-refundable. • Monthly rent: $215,650.33. • Initial lease term of thirty-five years (35) years with 2.69% annual step increases through Year 20. • Two (2) five-year; and One (1) four-year options to extend the lease. • Fair Market Value adjustments at Years 21, 26, 31, 36, 41, and 46. • Hillwood to construct all improvements at its sole cost and expense, including applicable permit and entitlement fees. • Triple-Net lease; Hillwood to pay all maintenance, taxes, utilities, and insurance costs throughout initial term and any option terms.

ess than a month remains for the public to provide input on a draft version of Connect SoCal, the 2020-2045 Regional Transportation Plan/Sustainable Communities Strategy for the six counties and 191 cities that make up the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG). The 25-year plan identifies $638.6 billion in transportation improvements for the region as a whole, including $87.4 billion specific to the Inland Empire. The public is encouraged to weigh in on the plan during the formal comment period, which runs through 5 p.m. on January 24. San Ber nardino County Homeless Point-In-Time Count and Sur vey

n Jan. 23, field teams of volunteers will canvass all of the county’s cities, towns and unincorporated communities in an effort to count, survey and assist the county’s homeless population. Volunteers will include members of the public, community groups, County employees, homeless service providers, and private-sector stakeholders. Volunteers who are able to engage with homeless individuals will ask specific survey questions, offer hygiene kits, and provide information on who to contact for homeless services.

Data collected during the PointIn Time Count (PITC) is critical to effective strategic planning and is the main source of data used by the federal government to track the number, demographics and needs of people experiencing homelessness throughout the county. These numbers are also used to determine federal funding allocations to address homelessness.

The annual PITC, coordinated by the San Bernardino Office of Homeless Services (OHS) in conjunction with the San Bernardino County Homeless Partnership (SBCHP), is designed to obtain an estimated number of homeless individuals and families in San Bernardino County on a given day and to discover their specific needs.

For the second year, volunteers will conduct the entire unsheltered Point-In-Time Count by use of a web-based application designed

Connect SoCal projects that the Inland Empire will see its population grow by more than a third over the next quarter century, from about 4.5 million now to more than 6 million by 2045 – far and away the fastest rate of expansion in the six-county region. During that year, the IE also is expected to expand its role as an international trade gateway, requiring an investment in infrastructure that facilitates the movement of both people and goods.

n February 5, 2020, San Bernardino County will hold its Regional Business Summit and State of the County titled Vision 2020. During the event, the County will celebrate how much has changed over the last decade across the region as well as look at the business innovators, places and people who will influence the next 10 years. Each year more than 1,000 business, government and community leaders come together to hear from the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, gain insight from top business leaders, and experience impact-oriented business development and networking. Some of the highlights to be shared will be key data points that demonstrate impact of the County’s growth on the local and regional economy and the long term effects of the Countywide Vision. In the fall of 2010, the San

Bernardino County Board of Supervisors engaged its residents, businesses, nonprofits, and other agencies in the creation of a Countywide Vision, a vision for the future. Since its adoption, the Countywide Vision has been a catalyst for collaborative solutions to critical issues such as public safety, housing, education, technology and more. Vision 2020 will be an opportunity to share some of these successes. here is one word that reflects universal admiration. Success. He or she is a SUCCESS. Money-Bill Gates. Politics-Nancy Pelosi. Business-Jimmy Carter. A good person-Jimmy Carter. Sports-Lebron James. T.V.-Ellen DeGeneres. Talk Show-Mika and Joe. Admired-Michelle Obama. Actresses-Goldie Hawn. PastorJoel Osteen. ETC. I’m sure you can make your own list of successful people. While the list I’ve given are all alive; the list of men and women that were successful in the past is beyond measure. The question that is most pressing is simple. What is the criteria for being successful? Amazingly, the King James Version of the Bible, mentions “success” only one time. Joshua 1:8. However, there are scores of ref-

Most of them. But what always inspires me is when a player turns to the T.V. and says something like, “I love you, Mom.” 0r “I owe it all to you, Mom.” He or she was acknowledging success. He voiced all of his success to his mother. Think of Thomas Edison; a dyslexic. Yet, no one has ever been more successful as an inven-

tor than him. A victim of a severe handicap.

Abraham Lincoln is revered as a great President. Yet, from what we know of him reveals his emotional bipolar problems. In no way did he succumb to his problems. In my opinion, one of the greatest heroes we Americans have ever had was John McCain. His political positions can be set aside. His patriotism is without question. He was a genuine hero. He was captured by the Vietnamese and endured unbelievable torture for seven years. He could have been released, but refused it until all Americans were released. His story is well known. Helen Keller is often ignored and her story is little known today. Born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama, she died on June 1, 1968 in Easton, Connecticut at age 88. Her birth name was Helen Adams Keller and 5 feet 7 inches tall. Seldom has any human person been so severely handicapped. At age one (1) plus seven months, she was stricken with a virulent childhood disease which resulted in complete loss of her sight and her hearing. Her parents diligently sought for

help for Helen, to no result.

The following paragraphs are verbatim from Eileen Berdon’s biography of Helen Keller. “Finally, when Keller was seven, Annie Sullivan, a young teacher, was hired by the family. Through a system involving a constant physical contact with Sullivan, a touch alphabet ‘spelled’ into Keller's hand, persistence, faith, and love - detailed in The Miracle Worker- (1962). Keller suddenly and amazingly understood; she quickly and efficiently learned language, and the world opened to her. She asked to be taught to speak at the age of ten. With Sullivan's important emotional and intellectual support, Keller's development took off. Keller graduated - cum laude - from Radcliffe College in 1904. Sullivan was her companion until her death in 1936. Helen Keller wrote prolifically, traveled

widely, lectured on various personal, political, and academic topics, and was awarded numerous honorary degrees from universities around the world. She died in 1968, one of the most famous and widely-admired women of our time.” In my research for this article I ran across the following. I don’t know who wrote it.

hank you to everyone who participated in this year's teddy bear drive benefitting Loma Linda University Children's Hospital! 476 bears were donated this year, crushing our original goal of 250. This brings the combined total of bears raised from all three years of the drive to 1,170! Bears were passed out to patients and their families during the week of Christmas. As a former patient of the LLUCH, I hope the gift of a bear brightens their days. Thank you to all of the local

businesses who were bear drop off locations: LLUCH Foundation office, Paulson Orthodontics, Star Tulip Stuffies House of Fine Stuffed Animals, Rau Plastic Surgery, Rendition Tattoo, Redlands Elks Lodge, Energy Lab, and Dance Move Live (Redlands and Highland locations). AUW Redlands Branch and the University of Redlands Public Policy Program will present a forum for the candidates for the California State Senate seat representing District 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 28 in the Casa Loma Room on the U of R campus. This event is open to the community at no charge. Moderators will be Dorene Isenberg, economics professor and codirector of the public policy program at the U of R; Renee Van Vechten, political science professor at the U of R; and Cassie MacDuff, former Press-Enterprise columnist and member of AAUW, Redlands Branch. San Ber nardino Symphony Orchestra to perfor m a tribute to Dr. Mar tin Luther King, Jr.

n honor of the birthdate of Dr. Martin Luther King and the region’s unique contributions to the American civil rights movement, the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra has prepared a tribute concert to be performed January 18, 2020 at the California Theatre of the Performing Arts.

“This concert is going to move our audience and reach out and touch their soul. The music is brilliant and powerful” said Symphony Board President Dean McVay, adding “That’s what this live symphonic experience is all about - transporting our audience to new and different places and experiences, and having them walk out of the concert hall having been moved and inspired in ways they had not considered before.” Inclusive of powerhouse vocalists Jacob Lusk, Lettrice Lawrence, Bradley Baker, and the Selah Gospel Choir, an accompanied by narrative from local education leader Dr. Margaret Hill, the concert will include electrifying renditions of anthems, hymns, and spirituals including Wade in the Water, Strange Fruit, Free at Last, City Called Heaven, and Lift Every Voice and Sing.

“Our MLK tribute will be one of the most inspiring concerts this orchestra has even mounted,” said Symphony Music Director and Conductor Anthony Parnther. “We have imported nationally regarded talent to our region to pull off a very ambitious program and these are the kinds of soulful performers who will bring the house down.” In addition, the Symphony will be performing the West Coast premiere of three-time Emmy awardwinning composer John Wineglass’s “Unburied, Unmourned, Unmarked.” Making its premier in February of 2019 in Pittsburg, this classical symphonic work takes history off the shelves and onto the concert hall as a modern and AfricanAmerican inspired take on a classic requiem in the spirit of Verdi, Mozart, Faure, and Britten. It mourns the souls of the enslaved Africans who died on Lowcountry rice plantations in the U.S., their bodies unburied, their suffering unmourned, and their sacrifices unmarked for future generations. Four Concerts Will Follow The January 18th concert is the third of six major performances scheduled for the Symphony’s upcoming season. February 22, the Symphony will perform Cirque de la Symphonie bringing awe-inspiring acrobatics choreographed to Classical music to the stage alongside orchestral musicians. A March 15 matinee will highlight works by Tchaikovsky, Mozart, and Grieg, including a solo performance of Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto by Maestro Parnther. The season will close May 2 with From Stage to Screen, a tribute to the golden age of Hollywood with movie scores from Bernard Hermann and a tribute to Judy Garland by Emmy-nominated vocalist Angela Ingersoll. Redlands Symphony to present String Serenade

he Redlands Symphony will present String Serenade, a concert featuring the orchestra’s outstanding string players, on Saturday, January 18, 2020 in Memorial Chapel on the

campus of the University of Redlands. Maestro Ransom Wilson will conduct. The concert begins at 8 PM. Doors open at 7 PM and there will be a pre-concert talk at 7:15 PM. Single tickets start at

$18 and can be purchased online at www.redlandssymphony.com, at the box office located at 112 E. Olive Avenue, Suite C in Redlands during regular business hours or at the door on concert night.

“The string section is often called ‘the soul of the orchestra’ with good reason,” according to Wilson, “No other section of the orchestra can convey the entire range of human emotions so completely. Our concert will showcase the warmth and virtuosity of

our own Redlands Symphony strings.”
