The Shops at University Parkway celebrates grand opening of Phase 2

he community celebrated the grand opening of the second phase of The Shops at University Park on Saturday, January 11, located on Northpark Boulevard at University Parkway across the street from Cal State University San Bernardino. Developed by JR Watson & Associates Development Corp., the center celebrated the recent openings of Afters Ice Cream, FireWings, Asian Fusion Eatery, Poketology and VCA Northside Animal Hospital, which join eateries Wayback Burger, Jimmy Johns, Jamba Juice, and Dickey’s Barbecue Pit. It’s Boba Time will open in the near future.

he San Bernardino City Unified School District Board of Education honored 11 students with Outstanding Student Awards at the November 5, 2019, Board meeting. Students were also recognized by the San Bernardino Symphony, which provided them and their families with free symphony tickets, and Assembly member James Ramos, who provided each student with a certificate of recognition. Outstanding Student Award winners are recognized for achieveShops JR Watson & Associates, who thanked the community for their attendance. “We’re very pleased to be involved with the City of San Bernardino and with the university, it’s a great place to do business.” Watson and his wife Judy established the Watson Literacy Center and the Judy Rodriguez Art Program on campus, and declared they will continue to fund future public art programs. He is inquisitive and loves to share his knowledge “This is a great opportunity for development in our city, we’re really excited to have Jim and Judy Watson’s great work here in our community,” stated Valdivia, who congratulated the Watsons on behalf of the city for their investment in San Bernardino. “The opportunities are endless when we partner, collaborate, and work together in a safe environment and community - this development represents those principles of collaboration and partnership.” Fernando Dutra, builder and land developer, highlighted the fact that Watson is responsible for the development that spans the campus - 350 new homes between

Visitors enjoyed a free afternoon of family fun, including a ribbon cutting ceremony, entertainment by the Cajon High School Band, a DJ from CSUSB’s Coyote Radio, face painting, a balloon artist, food samples, life-size games and giveaways. Together, they have graced international stages from Chenai, India, to Paris, France, and have extensively toured the U.S. as the supporting act for Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys’ new project The Arcs, as well as Cafe Tacvba, La Santa Cecilia, and Natalia Lafourcade. Their recent collaborations

with Miguel and John Legend have garnered much press. The Cheech will be one of the first museums dedicated to Chicano art, featuring approximately 700 paintings, drawings, sculptures and other works Mr. Marin has collected over more than 30 years. The collection is considered the largest private collection focused on Chicano art. It will be housed in a refurbished 61,420square foot building that was opened as the Riverside Public Library in 1964, next door to the

historic Mission Inn Hotel & Spa. The Center is slated to open in Fall 2021. Fourth-grader Natalia Guadarrama is a respectful and responsible student who models good behavior at all times. She is on the Honor Patrol and has auditioned for the Odyssey of the Mind Club. Natalia wants to attend UCR or UC Berkeley and become an elementary principal right here in SBCUSD. Fifth-grader Myala Poynter consistently demonstrates PBIS skills and Restorative Justice practices. She is a high-achieving student who masters new concepts in both English and Spanish. Myala wants to attend CSUSB and become an artist who works in animation. Del Vallejo Leadership and STEAM Academy Outstanding Students Eighth-grader Adriane Flores is a model scholar-athlete who exhibits good behavior, completes his assignments, and is a starter on the softball team. Adriane wants to attend UCLA and become a professional baseball player or work in criminal justice. Seventh-grader Rachel Gonza-

lez is an example of a student who understands the importance of both arts and academics. She plays baritone in the Advance Band, but her focus is always on maintaining her 4.0 G.P.A. Rachel is excited to become a Pacific Pirate and earn top grades so she can attend a four-year university and become a veterinarian.

Sixth-grader Laylah Johnson stays on task and focused on her studies, as evidenced by her 3.667 G.P.A. She is also helpful and kind, which is why her teachers can always count on her to represent the sixth-grade team. Laylah wants to attend Spelman College and eventually become a professional photographer. Arroyo Valley High School Outstanding Students Twelfth-grader Miguel Antonio is a scholar-athlete. He’s taking rigorous IB classes and is the president of the AVHS running club. And as senior class president, he helped create a positive, inclusive school culture. Miguel plans to attend Cal State San Bernardino and major in finance or marketing. Twelfth-grader Veronica Banuelos is extremely intelligent and motivated. She is an International Baccalaureate scholar with a 4.9 GPA. She is being sought after by many colleges, who have invited her to visit. Veronica plans to major in economics and minor in business. Tenth-grader Marissa Collins is smart and hardworking. She is willing to do whatever it takes to further her education. She took the initiative to travel to Vietnam over the summer to see how medicine is practiced in other countries. Marissa wants to major in medicine at an Ivy-league college.

Emerging partnerships are key to the IEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s promising future will continue to experience significant population growth in the years ahead, which is attractive to businesses looking to build or expand their workforce. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also a young community â&#x20AC;&#x201C; more than 25% of our population is under the age of 18. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s incumbent upon us to prepare that next-generation workforce for emerging career opportunities.

eveloping partnerships are helping to establish a new roadmap for the Inland Empire as we boldly embrace a future of economic opportunity and prosperity. Robust, cross-sector initiatives such as Inland Economic Growth & Opportunity (IEGO), Inland California Rising and Regions Rise Together are demonstrating the power of collaboration and shared visioning when it comes to promoting business growth and developing a next-generation workforce. More locally, efforts such as the Fontana Mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Education Coalition are reinventing how schools, businesses and the public sector can work together to build stronger, more prosperous communities. Add it up, and the IE is clearly poised to fulfill its promise as one of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fastest-growing population and economic centers. But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing it that stands out â&#x20AC;&#x201C; recognizing that our collective might is far greater than the sum of our parts. At the recent Regions Rise Together launch event at Cal State San Bernardino, members of our San Bernardino County Workforce Development Board (WDB) team worked side-by-side with stakeholders from throughout the IE and the governorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office to discuss proactive steps we can take as a region to maximize the opportunities ahead of us. Similar discussions are taking place with IEGO â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a cross-sector collaboration committed to attracting more middle-class employment opportunitiesâ&#x20AC;&#x201C; and Inland California Rising â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a developing partnership between stakeholders in the IE and Central Valley to seed broader regional opportunities. Among the recurring themes in all of these efforts: The Inland Empire

Again, partnerships are the key. In San Bernardino County, initiatives such as Vision2Succeed, the Workforce Roadmap and GenerationGo! are establishing the framework for aligning our workforce and economic development efforts. Through GenGo!â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s career pathways program, students are getting hands-on learning opportunities, internships and apprenticeships at local businesses. If scaled, this model could help tens of thousands of high school students in our county alone get the initial skills training and workplace knowledge they need to get that first real job. The Fontana Mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Education Coalition is built on the same foundation, and is already producing tangible results, such as a newly launched program that is teaching high school students workplace skills ranging from interviewing to dressing for success to conflict resolution. The weekend classes are taught by business owners, who are gladly offering their time and expertise to give young people a preview of what will be expected of them when they get a job.

Bernie Sanders the best choice for veterans There is an old saying, â&#x20AC;&#x153;A man (or woman) cannot ride two horses at the same time.â&#x20AC;? Candidates who hold fundraisers in wealthy peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s living rooms and then claim to represent working Americans are being hypocritical. Senator Bernie Sanders has received the largest number of donations of any candidate for President in history up to this point, with an average donation of $18 and is the only top tier candidate with no billionaire donors. As the former Chair and longtime member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, Sanders has a longtime proven track record of standing up for veterans and ensuring they and their dependents receive the care and benefits they are entitled to. Among other things Sanders will implement as President are: 1.

Large pharmaceutical companies invested more than $90 billion in U.S. research and development in 2016. Small biotech firms invested billions more. By comparison, the NIH's annual research budget is less than $40 billion. Millions of people suffer from debilitating conditions. Fifty million Americans suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and other diseases that cause a person's immune system to attack healthy cells, organs, and tissue. Most of these ailments have no cure. And existing treatments often cause severe side effects. These patients are counting on researchers to produce better treatments and cures. Thankfully, U.S. researchers are currently developing more than 4,500 new treatments for a variety of diseases, including type 1 diabetes, lupus, and heart disease.

he most beloved and remembered verse of Scripture is undoubtedly the Gospel of John 3:16. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” The love of God. We quote it; we sing about it; and we believe it. But recently I was reading Mathew Kelly’s book, “Rediscover Jesus,” and he said something that impressed me and disturbed me. It was given to me by Annette. We have a tendency to judge people by the people they choose to associate with; their friends. Basically for two reasons. One, they are very much like each of them. Or two, by comparison they see themselves to be superior to them. Not always, but too often they would wish to be like them.

Consider the people that Jesus associated with. E. Stanley Jones, who many years ago was a Methodist missionary in India. He wrote, “Jesus was the best photograph that God had taken.” What it implied was that Jesus was reflecting the love of God, in His actions.

In Luke 10:25-37, IS THE FAMOUS STORY THAT JESUS SHARED. The concept of helping others, even though they were outcasts. Jesus’ attitude toward others was radical. He saw everyone, the good and the bad, the acceptable and the boozers, the religious and the irreligious. All were children of God.

The question we must ask ourselves is, “How many of those that Jesus associated with would we be comfortable with? They were: the sick, the poor beggars (vagrants), the orphans, despised, women, children, the boozers, and sinnersin each of them Jesus saw them as a child of God. An example may be of help. In John 4:7-8. It’s about a Samarian woman that came to a well for water. Jesus asked her for a drink. His disciples had gone to the city to buy food. She said to Jesus, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask me, a woman and a Samaritan, for a drink?” Remember; all Jews, Gentiles and Romans-despised the Samaritans. She was also divorced. Her own people looked down on her. At another time He drinks with men at the local bar. He was accused of being a “winebibber.”

A personal account. Years ago, when I was a local pastor, we had a spaghetti dinner. I received several complaints that night of the dinner. Three men were serving the spaghetti in the kitchen. They were dishing it to the people. One man was a para-trooper, a Colonel and was wearing his uniform with all of his medals. The second was a senior, former military man who was a pain-in-theneck for many, the third man was relatively new to the church. He had recently got out of prison, he was a Hell’s Angel and covered with tattoos. He was clean and that evening had asked me if he could join the church. By the way, several members complained about him. I told him, “Yes, just attend the membership class on Sunday.” One year later I conducted his

funeral. The only ones there were his wife, under the tent, and about 30 Hell’s Angels standing far back. The service was at Montecito. I ask you, “What would Jesus have done?” Or what would you have done? Also, I have thought about the disciples of Jesus. The ones He had picked to listen to what He had to say, and the ones that would build His church after He was gone: one was boisterous and a liar, two were egotistical, they wanted very special preference, one was a traitor. The disciples were described in Acts 4:13 as “unlearned and ignorant.” WHAT A BUNCH. Two personal illustrations. My Mother gave me up when I was 2 ½ years old. Fortunately, my Dad took me. We would talk after I grew older. At age 16 I had become a Christian and a self-right-

eous believer; a trait my church encouraged. A young girl; age 18, became pregnant, and in my righteousness, I condemned her. My Mother said something that I’ve never forgotten. “Bill, have you ever considered that she might need what you say you have?” It changed my attitudes completely. “Thank you, Mother.” My favorite response for any judgmental attitude is, “Since when did God resign and put me or you in charge?” Some place in the Bible it says, “Judge not that you be not judged.” Amen. Selah. So be it. This is a reprint of Doc’s article from this time last year. Doc suffered a fractured vertebra as a result from two falls last week and he is recovering.
