lexander Mattison, 2016 San Bernardino High School (SBHS) graduate and current Minnesota Vikings running back, returns to the city to host two I AM GIFTED youth football camp sessions this Friday, July 2 at SBHS for 1st through 6th graders at 1 p.m., and 6th - 12th graders later at 5 p.m. Athletes for Life is still accepting sign-ups (details below).

Mattison is teaming up with NFL Play 60 - designed to educate, encourage and empower youth while teaching them the proper skills and techniques such as passing, catching and running skills in a non-contact setting.

Youth learn in an age-appropriate manner based on their cognitive and physical maturity.

n Saturday, June 26th, following many months of COVID-19 shutdown, the San Bernardino Food Fest has returned to Court Street Square. 15 vendors participated in the opening with live entertainment at the Court Street Square stage.

Every Food Fest food vendor is required to be licensed by both the City and County Health Department. Each food vendor is also required to pass an onsite inspection by the County Fire Department. During the event, four armed security guards roamed the vicinity maintaining a safe environment.

Pacific High is one of five schools statewide to ear n gold cer tification

P

acific High School’s Digital Design and Communications Academy, part of the San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD), is certified Linked Learning Gold. It’s one of only five Linked Learning pathways statewide to achieve Gold Certification.

Linked Learning approaches high school courses as an opportunity to prepare students for both college and a career. While many high schools shift students to either a college-bound track or a trade/career track, Linked Learning aims to make sure all students are prepared for both by integrating career-technical training with rigorous, college-entry coursework.

“Linked-Learning Pathways are the perfect complement to the District’s goal of making sure all of our students are prepared for college and career when they graduate from high school,” said Rose Gonzalez, coordinator of Workforce Development for SBCUSD. “And knowing that Pacific’s Academy earned Gold Certification is proof that we are on the right track in preparing students to Food Fest, dors who participated in the Food Fest. They have added a Mobile Kitchen to their operations that they use for catering and special events. Restaurant owners Misael and Jovi Rodriguez said that they were excited to be part of the SB Food Fest and plan to be regulars at the event.

Linked-Learning pathways connect to one or more of California’s 15 industry sectors. Students who complete the pathway learn knowledge and skills applicable to careers in that sector and are prepared for entry-level positions in their field and to enroll in a related college major.

Pacific’s Digital Design and Communications Academy is part of the Arts, Media, and Entertainment and Business and Finance sectors. Digital Design Academy students gain industry certifications, participate in work-based learning projects, and develop a digital portfolio that demonstrates their skills and can be used when applying for internships and jobs in those sectors. Students who successfully complete the program are prepared for careers in animation, movie and video production, voice acting, graphic design, and more.

There are four key elements to Linked Learning. Courses must be rigorous and aligned to admission requirements for state colleges

and universities. They must provide students with a technical education that teaches real-world skills through a carefully structured sequence of lessons. Coursework must expose students to real-world workplaces through internships, apprenticeships, and job shadowing. And students should be supported in their learning with counseling and supplemental instruction in reading, writing, and math to address individual student needs.

According to the Linked Learning website, Gold Certification represents the highest-quality standard for career pathways.

Each pathway must demonstrate student-centered learning with “strong career and postsecondary integration, combined with student supports that ensure equitable opportunities for all students.”

By the end of the camp, participants will have developed a better understanding of the fundamentals of blocking, catching, running, and passing. Mattison will also provide combine testing for all 7th through 12th graders, testing participants in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump, and 3 cone drills.

A native of San Bernardino, Mattison himself started participating in the I AM GIFTED football camp when he was in 6th grade, attending each year until he graduated from SBHS. This Friday’s camp will serve as the launch of Mattison’s annual involvement.

The San Bernardino Food Fest is a monthly event that will occur every fourth Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m.

“For me it’s a no-brainer that I’m going to always come back and give back to San Bernardino and the community that will make an impact on the youth,” Mattison explained. “This is just one of many ways that I want to give back to the community to make sure that there’s something available for these kids to have an outlet and have something that they are passionate about – what better way than someone who is a San Bernardino native who walked in their shoes and made it out.”

Mattison, whose backstory is scarred with violence, drugs, and poverty, revealed his path to success was his focus on school, putting that above all other distractions. His efforts paid off – Mattison was a two-time all-state running back named the county's top student-athlete, not only for his field performance but also for his 4.6-grade point average in the classroom. He was a dual-immersion program student starting in the 1st grade and graduated with a seal of biliteracy. After rushing for back-to-back 2,000+ yard seasons for the Cardinals, Mattison chose to accept a full-ride football scholarship to Boise State University.

There he led the Broncos in rushing his sophomore and junior season before leaving college early to enter the NFL Draft, selected by the Minnesota Vikings in their third round pick.

“For a lot of the kids in the city, one thing that can help is being focused on your personal growth for the betterment of yourself and your family; and for me, if you put your family at the forefront of your decisions then it makes it a lot easier to make the right decision,” Mattison reflected. “It takes a lot of strength for these kids to go through a lot of different situations living in San Bernardino, but I’m testimony that it’s possible. Go find your why and put all your energy into making that dream become a reality.”

Communit y organizat ions collab orate in major vaccination push to combat vaccine hesitancy

N

onprofit organizations and faith leaders across the Inland Empire are combining forces in an urgent effort to reach communities most impacted by COVID-19. Recognizing vaccine hesitancy and circulating disinformation, leading community groups are partnering to maximize vaccine efforts in this critical moment of reopening and recovery.

The initiative, IE COVID Recovery, led by Inland Empire United, brings San Bernardino and Riverside County groups together to share messaging and strategies for reaching communities most impacted by the pandemic. While community groups along with Sierra Health Foundation have been collaborating since early February, many groups are now heeding the call to help increase vaccination rates and fight disinformation head on as a critical life saving effort in their communities.

“We’re saturating our neighborhoods with images and messages in their languages that speak to their needs and concerns,” explained Anna Lisa Vargas, Communities for a New Education Fund (CNC) lead Coachella organizer. “We care about the people who make up our neighborhoods so we’re doing our best to get them vaccinated.”

Drawing on political organizing experience, creative methods and trusted voices, groups such as CNC are meeting residents in the spaces they most frequent. Drawing on their community organizing experience, CNC is meeting Coachella residents “on their turf”, in the physical and virtual spaces that they frequent most.

Most recently, CNC launched a Subete la Manga, (roll up the sleeve) challenge, kicked off by well-known radio host, Don Cheto who calls on residents to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated with a little dance to the tune of Mexican party music. In the Coachella Valley, over 65,000 residences have been reached with life saving vaccine information.

Targeting community spaces such as churches, food banks, parks and agricultural fields, Inland Congregations Uniting for Change (ICUC) is intentional about reaching Coachella Valley residents in their own languages of Spanish, English and Purepecha. Coupled with door-todoor canvassing, phone banking, radio and television campaigns, ICUC is successfully communicating with hard to reach communities. From Univision television campaigns to Spanish language radio spots, airwaves are being filled with positive vaccination messages. Congregations Organizing Prophetic Engagement (COPE) is leading the Essential

Faith Campaign, along with African American faith leaders of the Inland Empire Concerned African American Churches (IECAAC), to support access to COVID-19 vaccinations within Black communities and encouraging continued social distancing and mask wearing.

Campaign efforts have been driven by research polls conducted in January and April in partnership with the Othering and Belonging Institute (OBI) and Inland Empire United by UC Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS). The poll oversampled voters in the Inland Empire with a series of questions designed to capture attitudes on COVID-19 vaccination and mitigation efforts.

The positive takeaway from the results is that both hesitance and resistance to vaccination have dropped substantially across IE communities of color from January to May. By May, the declines in hesitancy among IE voters of color were large, and outpaced that among whites. Overall, 17.2% of IE voters of color are now undecided (down 12.3 percentage points), and 20% of English-dominant Latinxs (down 11 percentage points).

The fruit and vegetables benefit increase will be issued from June 1, 2021 through September 30, 2021. Benefits are good for 30 days from the date they are issued.

For example, benefits issued on September 27 can still be used through October 26.

“The fruits and vegetables benefit has a significant impact on the dietary quality of WIC families,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Curt Hagman. “Eating a diet

“Since I want to be a nurse, I should start helping people,” said Sanchez, a graduate of Redlands High School. “I should start with my school. I want to be out of my comfort place and meet new people.”

She said the pandemic has been very stressful for students and if there is something the trustees can do to provide more emotional support, that is one thing she would suggest.

I

n a year when college campuses reopen after a global pandemic, two nursing students will be the student trustees on the Board of the San Bernardino Community College District.

Cosmic coincidence? Probably.

Lauren Ashlock, 19, will represent Crafton Hills College and 19year-old Elena Sanchez Paez will represent San Bernardino Valley College. They were elected by a vote of their peers, and they were sworn in on June 10, via Zoom,

for a one-year term.

Their job is to speak for students at the public meetings of the San Bernardino Community College District Board of Trustees, who decide the big picture issues of financial aid, new buildings, campus safety, and just recently, hiring a new leader.

Last month the trustees voted to appoint Diana Z. Rodriguez as the district’s 16th Chancellor. She has been president of San Bernardino Valley College and on August 1 she will lead the system that

serves 20,000 students through two campuses, a workforce training facility, and KVCR TV/FM. Both of the new student trustees said they will be learning from more experienced board members as they go, trying to stretch themselves to meet new people and speak up for the needs of the students.

Sanchez is fully bilingual in English and Spanish. She lives in San Bernardino with an aunt. She said she is studying to be a nurse because her mother is a nurse in Mexico. “I used to go to the hospital with her and help the patients.” She hopes to finish her program at San Bernardino Valley College and then transfer to Cal State San Bernardino to earn a degree in nursing.

Ashlock is a graduate of Loma Linda Academy and has been taking her Crafton Hills classes online in the pandemic year at the same time as her parents and her siblings have been working and studying from home.

that,” Ashlock said. But she is ready to feel more involved at school. “My goal is just to listen to the students and do what is best for them.”

Her own healthcare dream is to be a Physician’s Assistant one day.

“I like the flexibility and I like the hands-on time with patients, and I think I will be able to keep a balance between work and the rest of my life,” she said.

Her memory of meeting a Physician’s Assistant comes from an event three years ago when her father had a boating accident that required serious stitching on his hand. She will finish her program at Crafton and then apply to transfer to Loma Linda University.

“I’m more interested in the patient care side of things,” Ashlock said. “I’m a people person. I like to interact with people.”

That is a common refrain from students who are missing out on some of the traditional fun of walking around a college campus in person. When classes start on August 16, she and all the other students will get a chance to do just that.
