ontana Mayor Pro Tem and local small businessman Jesse Armendarez announced last Friday that he is running for the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, Fifth District. The Fifth District includes all or portions of the cities of Colton, Fontana, Rialto, and San Bernardino, as well as the unincorporated communities of Bloomington, El Rancho Verde, Glen Helen, Arrowhead Farms, Muscoy, Little Third, and Rosena Ranch. “I ran for the Fontana City Council to improve the quality of life for my neighbors. Our Council has done just that, and Fontana is now one of the most thriving and prosperous cities in the county. We achieved this by investing in our infrastructure, including keeping our roads and streets pothole free and well maintained. We also hired more law enforcement officers which reduced crime rates overall. And, we attracted new businesses and convinced local businesses to expand, creating livable wage

jobs for our region. We achieved this all while being fiscally responsible and balancing the city budget without new or higher taxes.” “While Fontana is moving in the right direction, I noticed that San Bernardino County isn’t

doing as well. Since 2013, the county budget has ballooned by almost $2 billion dollars but the services the county provides have not improved. While we are paying higher taxes, including: $3.4 million in vehicle license taxes, $25 million in fire service taxes, 52% more in water rates,

and a new small business fee, our violent crime rates have gone up 16% since 2014, and there is a need for more officers to keep us safe. To make things worse, homelessness increased 23% just this last year. Clearly, our county Armendarez, cont. on next pg.

Armendarez is headed down the wrong track.” “I want to bring my record from the Fontana City Council to the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors and get our county moving in the right direction. I am running for supervisor to reduce violent crime and gun violence. I am running for supervisor to create livable wage jobs for our residents. I am running for supervisor to make our streets and infrastructure pothole free and well maintained. Together, I believe we can improve our quality of life and move San Bernardino County forward.” Jesse Armendarez was born and raised in San Bernardino County. 95 degrees; the space features lots of great architecture that makes it unique. It has been great for Viva La Boba and having that extra secluded outdoor space will be special to the area and future businesses. The duo also shared that in the future they anticipate the Breezeway will offer a full experience including dining, more drink options and more live entertainment. Some drink options that the boba shop currently serves were specially crafted to the city’s demographic. “San Bernardino is 62 percent Hispanic and we wanted to cater our drinks to the population. Since it was released our Horchata Milk Tea has become a fan favorite at Viva La Boba,” said Philip. Philip shared that the Horchata Milk Tea base is made with traditional Horchata, made of rice milk; and it includes whole milk or heavy cream and black tea - oolong. Another popular drink at the boba shop is its Chai Milk Tea, “It’s representative of my Indian culture. It’s made with a blend of spices that has been passed down through generations in my family. When we serve this drink, I always feel as if we’re giving our guests a piece of my grandmother’s kitchen,” continued Philip. Another item that makes Viva La Boba so special to not only San Bernardino but to the environment is the special biodegradable straws made of sugar cane.

“We've always been environmentally conscious people. We were looking at different ways to help save the environment and the one thing that we did was create biodegradable straws made of sugar cane; it’s our way of showing that we can reduce landfill. Our next step will be to create reusable boba tumbler cups and reusable straws,” Philip said. Both Philip and Friedman are environmentally conscious, as well as conscious of all the ways they can contribute to the city of San Bernardino. “We have a passion for the community. Our goal is not to make a bunch of money. We are intentionally staying small. We only want to be in communities that need us. We host cleanups, fundraisers, and we’re not afraid to get political,” Philip said. “In fact, one of our cleanups is this Sunday, August 25th, in partnership with Empowered Creations and Dearmelcee, we’re hosting a Community Park Clean Up at Seccombe Lake in San Bernardino at 8:30 a.m.,” concluded Philip. The Viva La Boba duo was recently honored by California State Assemblymember Eloise Gomez Reyes at district 47’s annual 30 Under 30 Awards Ceremony for their leadership and contributions to the community. With Philip and Friedman being so active in and around the San Bernardino community, it’s no surprise Viva La Boba has taken the Breezeway by storm. Time to tell our stor y A response to SCNG op-ed regarding model curriculum for ethnic studies By Dr. Enrique G. Murillo Jr. Professor of Education, Cal State University, San Bernardino

Graciela Torres Professor of Chemistry, Cal State University, San Bernardino

Kareem Gongora Professor California State Bar Committee of Bar Examiners

T

he Editorial Board of the Southern California News Group (SCNG) published a scathing and biased op-ed on August 8th regarding the model curriculum for ethnic studies. We not only strongly disagree, but reject the notions suggested in response to the draft model curriculum, that operate as a dog whistle to racists— which is absolutely dangerous in today’s political climate. This is the result of an Editorial Board that does not represent the ethnic and racial diversity of the community that SCNG services. Befittingly, they hold strong opinions on this curriculum and remain silent on the existing history curriculum, which promotes nationalism and not the inclusion of our nation’s diversity. The mere existence of ethnic studies, signals the absence of a culturally relevant and centered pedagogy, which our children deserve and has been established through the state’s policymaking process. We want to affirm the “guiding values and principles and highlight the inclusion of “capitalism, an economic system that profited on slavery and now preys on the prison and military industrial complexes as well as the exploitation of workers— many who are parents of these students. Understanding the

relationship of these powerful dynamics does not “teach children to feel lifelong hate and resentment over events that transpired centuries before they were born, but “[cultivates] empathy and enriches the process of holistically understanding who we are as Americans. The Editorial Board recommends “to educate students about the achievements of diverse people and cultures, which reminds us of how existing curriculum celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work towards civil and human rights for Americans, but overlooks Dr. King’s positions on the Vietnam War and the creation of the Poor People’s campaign. These stark omissions frame the conversation on economics and inter-sectional issues which continue to impact communities of color. We have reviewed the model curriculum for ethnic studies, which is working to cultivate academic success and elevate cultural competence. Undoubtedly, it should also raise sociopolitical and historical awareness. In closing, we believe “that until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter. It is time to tell OUR story.

In suppor t of Mayor Valdivia

S

an Bernardino's new administration comes equipped with a team of forward-thinking individuals committed to making our community all that it could be. The Mayor and his team are focusing on business development, growth, and safety. The administration is taking a strategic approach to attract quality jobs, grow our revenue, and bring San Bernardino's beauty back.

T

We've already seen quality changes for the better: improvements to our community parks and investment in youth programs because the children are our future. Our downtown is on a course towards revitalization. New projects, such as the Carousel Mall, are on track for overall enhancements that will attract businesses and consumers alike. Furthermore, the Mayor is focusing on generating long-term regional and global relationships that will in-

vest in our city and ultimately supercharge the San Bernardino economy. Change is never easy, but it's time to work together and show our neighbors that it's a new day in San Bernardino. Anthony Jones (Commissioner) Brenda Bell (Commissioner) Maxine Henderson (Commissioner)

How many bullets?

errorists proved on September 11, 2001 that guns are not necessary to kill 2753 people. Timothy McVeigh proved that a truck load of explosives can kill 168 people and injure 680 while destroying one third of building and damaging many others in Oklahoma City. A man with a knife killed four people and wounded two others in Los Angeles last week. A weapon of mass destruction can be a plane, an automobile, a knife, a gun or whatever an evil person chooses to utilize at a certain moment. By and large the weapon of choice has been an automatic weapon capable of holding a highcapacity magazine. Whether it was Las Vegas, Columbine, Charleston, El Paso, Dayton or sadly too many other locations to name, the weapon of choice has been an automatic rifle with highcapacity bullet magazines. A truck can kill people but normally you can hear and see a truck coming. A knife can kill people but not as many as a rifle with a magazine clip holding 70 or more bullets. An evil person can walk into a

church, theatre, Walmart or school and immediately have a couple of hundred people huddled together as a target. He doesn’t have to aim. He just points the weapon and pulls the trigger. The gun acts like a sprayer of bullets hitting people so fast that running or dodging is almost impossible. The shooter looks for scenarios where people are trapped with limited escape door opportunities. Thus a shooter with a bullet clip of 50, 70 or more has a potential of killing many people in just a minute or less. This is why Congress must enact background checks, strict licensing for high powered rifles and limit the number of bullets a clip can hold at one time. However, here is the problem. What is the magic number? My ordinary pistols hold six shells and my automatic ones hold more so what is the magic number of bullets that Americans will be limited to in one clip? Will it be 10 or 15 or 20? Honestly, there is no right number because a skilled marksman will still be able to kill. The hope is that maybe the ending of one clip or emptying of one pistol would give someone a chance to tackle the monster if anyone is still alive. Hopefully someone in the room will have a gun and be able to stop

the shooter. I’m for limiting magazine capacity but it won’t eliminate terrorism and mass shootings. It’s a Hail Mary and our Congress has to do something but we have to do more. All gatherings must take security measures. Hollywood and network television has to change. Universal Studios/NBC television is the biggest hypocrite of all. They constantly bark gun control and are negative toward the National Rifle Association while coming out with a movie titled “The Hunt which is supposedly about liberals hunting deplorables and killing them. This kind of junk is a huge part of the problem. Hollywood, the music industry and video games must dramatically change their tone. Barney Fife in the Andy Griffith show carried a gun but he never made any of us want to kill anyone or hate people. Guns, knives, trucks and airplanes can all kill and there are many other weapons that will kill massive numbers of people. We can’t eliminate them. Our greatest need is a culture change. Words to Think About: Both parties undermining our future wounded in Dayton, Ohio brought the total to 251 mass killings this year. It’s time our governmentboth Republicans and Democratsmust address the NRA. It subsidized 82 Representatives to the tune of several million dollars; and 28 Senators.

G. W. Abersold, Ph.D.

This article is unusual in one way. I have asked Jeffrey David to join with me as co-authors. He is 80 years old, a retired military man and a staunch Republican. I am 91, a retired minister and a staunch Democrat. We both agree that the Republican and Democratic parties are dead in the water. They are more negative than positive. They both live in the past. Neither one has programs to benefit our country. In fact, they both are undermining our future. For these reasons, we present the following suggestions. 1.The tragedy at El Paso with 22 dead and 26 people wounded; with 9 killed and 29people

In 2016 the NRA spent $50,000,000 on Republican election results. By the way, studies show that the mentally ill involved in the mass murders only affected 25 per cent of the killers. 2.The Infra-structures and educational programs in our country have decayed drastically in recent years. The Lieutenant Governor of Michigan stated last week that Michigan’s roads are imaginably bad. President Eisenhower was the last President to support improvement in the national Infrastructures. This includes dams, airports and bridges. Educators throughout our country are lamenting the school systems. This crisis should be addressed by both Republicans and Democrats. 3.Our borders and immigration laws are a farce-both Mexican and Canadian. In addition to laws, there is a great need for doctors,

and nurses. The current handling of children is a disgrace. Congress should develop a program similar to what F.D. Roosevelt instituted to develop in Germany’s economy. The Marshall Plan. The difference would limit the benefits to the citizens and not the corrupt oligarchy. It wouldn’t be long until the immigrants would stay home. 4. Again one or both parties need to address the national indebtedness. It is now around 30 trillion dollars. At the rate it is going our great, great grandchildren will be paying it off. The situation can be understood if we consider money we borrow for a home, a new car plus debts for college expenses. Those who loaned us the money have us by the throat. THEY CONTROL US. Do you know who controls the U.S.A.? China, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, the Queen of England, plus a dozen other organizations. It begins by balancing our budget. 5. Hate Groups. The number of them has grown astronomically in recent years. The afore mentioned mass murders verify their growth. Their membership is called White Supremacy. David Duke’s KKK

states: “The U.S. Government is following our agenda.” What is contributing to Domestic Terrorism? White Supremacy/White Nationalism are Duke’s agenda. Recalcitrant ex-military from the long wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria wars. Many vagrants in the big cities are ex-military men. Lost jobs that have hurt families in the Midwest. The result of NAFTA. Youngstown, Ohio is a good example. Factories have been closed; Unions have been eliminated; thousands have lost their jobs and they are rebellious. 6.Someone needs to stop having TARIFFS. Both USA and China. Traditionally “Free Trade” has been the answer. Either the Republicans or Democrats or both should take a stand for Free Trade. Socialism is not the answer. Neither is pure Capitalism. It takes a combination action. Free Trade is a viable answer, enabling a limited profit from the products. 7. Perhaps the most serious recommendation for both groups is to emphasize the truth that: “Words have Consequences.” President Trump says “Our nation must stop the hate, bigotry and

Caden Center

White Supremacy.” Statistics reveal that all killings have increasing in the last 25 years. The vast number of Americans and other nations have condemned assault guns. Domestic terrorists, hatred, while supremacy, the KKK, should all be condemned. 8.The government and primarily the Intelligence Departments have been blinded by the events of 911. Foreign terrorists have dominated their attention. Domestic terrorists have been growing more and more. They are a genuine threat to our citizenry. It’s foolishness to blame the killers being mentally ill. Mentally ill individuals are more likely to kill themselves. 9. Perhaps the most urgent issue for the political parties to address is the issue presented by Mr. Mueller. The destruction of our voting and election process. The future of our Democracy is in the hands of the Republicans and Democrats. The Bible says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” Psalm 33:12. Amen. Selah. So be it.

Angels blow the sox off the W hite Sox

his past Sunday I was able to go to an Angel game, where they were taking on the Chicago White Sox. The game was action packed and great to see, especially seeing the Angels just dominate and win 9-2. Here’s a recap, and what to expect as the season nears its end.

the Angels. For one, they consistently scored every other inning or so. Two, Mike Trout and Albert Pujols were both out of the lineup, so seeing the team win without them was impressive. Third, Shohei Ohtani hit only his 2nd Homerun in 33 games. If the Angels want to make a miracle run into the playoffs, he’s going to need to show up. Finally, the pitching was outstanding. Despite hitting two batters, Griffin Canning had an outstanding outing, only allowing 1 run, and allowing the Angels to not have to get too deep into their bullpen. There was also a lot of power on display, with Matt Thaiss and Kole Calhoun going yard along with Ohtani. It wrapped up the series against the struggling White Sox, where the Angels were able to win 3 games of the 4 game series.

There were a lot of positives for

The Angels now head to Texas,

the first time they’ll be there since the death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs. They will be playing a doubleheader to make up the game that was canceled due to Skaggs’ death. There were several fans still leaving tributes to Skaggs in front of Angel Stadium over the weekend. The Angels sit back 11 games in the wild card race (as of Sunday). But there is plenty of baseball left, and it would be one heck of a story to tell if this team could overcome so much to sneak into the playoffs. But, overall the game was fun to watch! Lessons I have lear ned from my 20-year str uggle with fear and anxiety

next time you feel anxious you can remind yourself that you got through it the last time by taking a walk.

By Stan Popovich

D

o you currently struggle with fear and anxiety and wish you could talk to someone who can relate to your situation? If so, I dealt with fear and anxiety for over 20 years and here are some lessons I learned during my mental health struggles. 1. Listen To The Professionals And Not Your Friends: Your friends may mean well, but when it comes down to it, the professionals know your situation more than anyone. They know what you are going through and are trained to deal with your situation. Consult with a counselor when you have questions about your mental health issues. 2. Distance Yourself From People Who Give You A Hard Time: Distance yourself from those people who won’t make an effort to help understand what you are going through. You need to surround yourself with positive and supportive people. I felt better when I avoided those people who would constantly argue with me regarding my anxieties and

stresses. 3. Focus On The Facts of Your Situation And Not Your Thoughts: When people are depressed they rely on their fearful and negative thoughts. Your fearful thoughts are exaggerated and are not based on reality. When you are depressed, focus on the facts of your current situation and not on what you think. 4. Learn From Your Experiences: In every anxiety-related situation I experienced, I learned what worked, what did not work, and what I needed to improve on as I managed my fears and anxieties. For example, you have a lot of anxiety and you decide to take a walk to help you feel better. The

5. You Can’t Predict The Future Regardless What Your Thoughts May Tell You: No one can predict the future with one hundred percent certainty. Even if the thing that you are afraid of does happen, there are circumstances and factors that you can’t predict which can be used to your advantage. For instance, you miss the deadline for a project at work. Suddenly, your boss comes to your office and tells you that the deadline is extended and that he forgot to tell you the day before. This unknown factor changes everything. 6. Things Change Over Time: Regardless of your current situation, things do not stay the same. You may feel very bad today, but it won’t last forever. Everything changes over time and this includes your current mental health issues. Stan Popovich is the author of “A Layman’s Guide to Managing Fear”. formed at LLU Children’s Hospital have included cholecystectomy, complex inguinal hernia repair, urachal cyst excision, splenectomy, pancreatectomy and IBD bowel resection. “We have now equipped our hospital to have another tool to serve our patients better,” Tagge said. “It won’t be used for every surgery, but now it’s an accessible tool to treat patients in the Inland Empire and beyond.”

You can almost hear the church vendors proudly identify their booth for the upcoming 78th annual Mi Ranchito Fiesta on Saturday, August 24th at the Historic St. John Bosco Mission. “As a church community, we’ve been preparing for several months by gathering the children and youth to fold, cut, and open colorful paper flowers. Ladies of the Prayer Group have been extremely busy helping with the flowers, preparing tamales, and sewing neck-cooler wraps,” said Henrietta Chavez, Fiesta Chair. The fiesta grounds will feature many booths of foods, beverages, games and a country store. Deco-

New University of Redlands campus mural highlights Native American Culture

y the time College of Arts and Sciences students return to the University of Redlands main campus in late August, there will be a new piece of art hanging in the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI). The new mural is a result of a grant that Native Student Programs received from the American Indian College Fund, a Native-run organization that provides scholarships, support, and programming to improve access to higher education for Native American students.

awareness of the challenges that many Native communities face. Over the course of his career, he has been commissioned to create a number of murals and art pieces alongside Native historians, working to preserve the Native oral tradition through art. His work is a form of cultural education and preservation. “After talking with Elizabeth, I learned that the Native youth who were going to be painting the mural were Cahuilla and Serrano,” he says. “We need to acknowledge the land that we stand on, so I incorporated aspects of the participants’ Native culture and history into the mural because they are the original caretakers of this land.”

“We knew we wanted to utilize the empty wall space outside our office to build awareness for Native Student Programs and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Excellence in Leadership Scholarship,” says Department Coordinator Christina Lara ’19. “When we applied for the grant, we stated we were going to use the funds to make a piece of art with volunteers from the community.”

Native Student Programs Assistant Director Elizabeth Shulterbrandt tapped Joe Galarza, a local Native muralist, and art instructor, to sketch the design of the mural. After growing up in Los Angeles, Galarza used art as a way to build

Over the course of a month, four different organizations from across Southern California brought the mural to life. Residents of the Desert Sage Youth Wellness Center, students from the Cal Poly Pomona Native Pipeline,

members of the San Manuel Department of Education, and students from Noli Indian School visited the Redlands campus on separate occasions to paint parts of the mural. Each group consisted of more than 20 participants, so members took turns painting while others played basketball and video or card games. Eleanor Navarro, a high school student from Riverside and a member of the Cal Poly Native Pipeline, kept coming back to the mural. “I wanted to take part in painting the mural because it represents my culture,” she says. “I think it’s really cool because not a lot of people make art about Native Americans and it feels good to see myself in paintings like this.” “The University is built on Cahuilla land, and this mural is an important acknowledgment of that,” says Lara. “Students on campus can be missing their homes and communities, and now they can come into CDI and see themselves.”

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916)939-0772 or visit this Internet Web http://search.nationwideposting.com/propertySearchTerms .aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA1900284734 Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Mortgagor, the Mortgagee or the Mortgagee’s attorney.
