ince inception of the program over 40 years ago, the San Bernardino Valley College Radio, Television and Film program changed its name ahead of the 2020-2021 school year. The program, which is now titled Film, Television and Media, was initiated to encompass a full range of inclusivity for all areas of media.

“We changed the name of the program because we needed to broaden our program’s scope, to evolve with the landscape of the media industry. When the program started over 40 years ago, it focused heavily on radio and today radio has been, in a sense, replaced with platforms such as podcasts and music streaming services,” said Lucas Cuny, program co-chair. Still time to respond to 2020 Census and shape the future

ou can still complete the questionnaire yourself online at 2020census.gov, by calling 844-330-2020, or by returning the paper form you received in the mail. Respond using the address where you were living on April 1, 2020 and include anyone who was living with you at the time. Your response matters – as does that of your friends, family, and neighbors – because the results of the 2020 Census determine how Media Today, the hands-on program is focused on film, media and production, with an array of equipment for students to reserve and use at home. “With the upgrades that our department has received in the past year students have the ability to come in and make a short film, a documentary, a podcast, or even shoot a live sporting event,” continued Cuny. “If a student wants to take three cameras out into the field, they can do that. We have the technology for them to accomplish all of that.” What makes this program stand out on a nationwide scale is that it’s one of four colleges in the country to provide students the opportunity to garner hands on Certificate “This is a much-needed project that will benefit so many students and have a great impact on the Hispanic community in the Inland Empire and beyond,” said Carmen Jany, CSUSB professor of Spanish and linguistics in the World Languages and Literatures Department, who oversees the grant. The three-year grant was written by Jany in collaboration with Nerea Marteache Solans, an associate professor in the CSUSB Criminal Justice Department, as well as María Mayberry, a profes-

For those wondering how the program is operating through the pandemic, its running just fine, according to Cuny. “Our program is lucky because we were a bit ahead of the curve. With our program’s upgrade that happened in the last year, we now have enough equipment for our students to check out cameras, iPads or some of our other tech to sor of Spanish at California State University, Sacramento, with whom CSUSB partnered to develop the certificate program. “I am thrilled that we have received grant support to carefully develop this project and all related activities and eager to get started,” Jany said. “It has been a great experience to collaborate with CSUSB faculty from criminal justice and to learn about their programs, disciplines and needs for their students. This is a collaborative effort, and the collaboration is what will make it a successful endeavor.”

has already responded, such as a roommate or family member, go ahead and respond and include everyone in your household in your response; the Census Bureau eliminates duplicate responses when processing the questionnaires. Your answers to the 2020 Census questionnaire are strictly confidential and protected by law. Your census responses cannot be used against you by any government agency or court in any way. Responses are only used to produce statistics.

At the beginning of the current 2020 fall semester, the program was only forced to drop one advanced radio production course; but it’s still operating 12 classes and 13 sections. Students of the program will soon participate in the Inland Empire 48 Hour Film Festival in November and the 2nd Annual Wolverine Con, potentially slated for a virtual format if virtual learning is still in effect. The San Bernardino Community College District will announce the status of virtual or in-person learning for spring 2021 on September 18. For more information, visit valleycollege.edu. According to Jany, the consortium with Cal State Sacramento is an effort to address the urgent need for linguistically and culturally prepared law enforcement workers serving the rapidly growing largest minority group in the state: Hispanics. Besides collaboration in the development of the Spanish Certificate Program, specialized instructional materials, and the international cultural experience in Spain, this partnership provides a means of addressing the same needs of a larger segment of California’s Hispanic population. “Students in the criminal justice

and related fields can now combine their field of study with language study and gain specialized language and culture competency which will ultimately make them much more competitive in the workforce and help them deal with the Spanish-speaking population,” said Jany, who has co-developed other professionally-oriented language programs, such as the Healthcare Spanish Certificate Program. Both campuses consulted with criminal justice faculty and professionals. At CSUSB, Jany has already offered an upper-level course in Criminal Justice Spanish after teaming up with Solans

to create the content. This project is intended to help students gain specialized Spanish proficiency at an intermediate level or higher. It aims to broaden the communicative skills attained in elementary Spanish. The project-specific and newly developed textbooks are designed to be incorporated into second- and thirdyear Spanish courses, said Jany. The goal of the coursework and internships in Spain is to develop linguistic, cultural and behavioral demeanors appropriate for successful communication with persons of Hispanic heritage in a professional situation.

Relics of America’s harrowing past are facing new scrutiny, and rightfully so. Statues are falling. NFL teams are renaming themselves. Even syrup brands are being discontinued.

Most urgently, they’re demanding a complete revision of U.S. history courses, calling on teachers to educate students about the darker side of our nation’s history — from the Trail of Tears to the Tulsa massacre — as well as the Black and Native Americans that have fought to make the ideals of our democracy true. We need age-appropriate curricula tailored for all stages of K12 education. A study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information found that by three months of age, a child begins to show a preference for faces of their own racial group — a bias that is only reinforced if it is not disrupted through transformative education.

Actor Chadwick Boseman recently died after a four-year battle with colon cancer. He was 43.

Boseman had starred in the blockbuster Marvel superhero franchise movie Black Panther rising to stardom. He played Jackie Robinson in the movie 42. He also played James Brown in Get on Up and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall. Boseman had received international accolades for his movie roles. He was young, handsome, and very talented. He had a loving family who was by his Los Angeles bedside when he died. Colon cancer robbed him of another 20 or even 30 years of movie stardom. Boseman's early diagnosis of colon cancer at the age of 39 reminds us all of the seriousness of colon cancer. All cancer is serious but colon cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States when women and men's statistics are combined.

mended age for the first colonoscopy. Newer reports have recommended age 45. I would suggest talking to your doctor by the age of 40 about a colonoscopy. My doctor has been adamant that my sons have colonoscopies by the time they are 40. There are more and more reports of early death from colon cancer. Television journalist Katie Couric's husband Jay Monahan died in 1998 at the age of 42 Death comes to us all by something. However, a colonoscopy might extend your life several years.

You may know someone who has been impacted by colon cancer. My father was diagnosed with colon cancer at age 60 but after a couple of very serious colon surgeries he survived to live to be 85 years old. My mother-in-law was diagnosed with colon cancer and lost most of her colon in her early forties, but also lived to be 85. When I was 50, I had my first colonoscopy and had several polyps removed that were not cancerous. Most likely if I had not

had routine colonoscopies along the way I would be dead today.

While you are scheduling your colonoscopy eat plenty of fiber. When I was kid in health class, we were taught about the importance of eating fruit and vegetables. I can't underscore enough the importance of eating broccoli, lots of other vegetables, strawberries, oranges, apples and other fruit. A big bowl of plain oatmeal every morning and a handful of walnuts is another good choice. We would never pour a cup of sand in our automobile's gas tank. Yet, often we consume food choices that do not benefit us much and often hurt us. Good eating choices are vital. There is no eternal fountain of youth in this world. However, I do hope we can live a lot of more good years and keep in mind that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Dr. Glenn Mollette glennmollette.com

As ongoing Black Lives Matter protests have forced a reckoning on police brutality, systemic racism, and truths that have been conveniently left untold, student coalitions are circulating petitions demanding anti-racist education curricula in schools across the country.

Ultimately, exposure to a diverse and anti-racist education at a young age equips students with a sense of radical empathy that is not only an essential quality of leadership, but that will serve them in their relationships throughout their lives.

Crafton Hills College's Summer Bridge Program transitions students from Adult School into college scholars

ore than two dozen students from local adult education institutions completed Crafton Hills College's Summer Bridge Program, an online course designed to prepare students for a successful college experience. The program is part of Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), a state and collegefunded program to uplift underrepresented and marginalized students and help them succeed in higher education. Students who participated in the summer 2020 program had a slightly different experience than Bridge students in previous years, according to Counselor Arline Troncoza. Because of the restrictions placed on daily life and higher education due to COVID19, students enrolled in this year's program had more of an emphasis on digital literacy skills.

Modules within the course focused on traditional study skills like notetaking and time management but also reflected how the educational landscape has shifted in the era of COVID-19. Students learned how to use distance learning tools including video conferencing, online collaborative software, student email and more.

Lakers win 4 straight after game 1 loss, easily eliminate injured Blazers team

F

inally, after eight long years of waiting, the Lakers have their first playoff series win. It was no easy task, but LeBron James showed why he’s the king, and AD showed why he is maybe the best big (man) in the league. The series started with game 1 in the Orlando bubble, with the Lakers designated as the “home” team. The game was a battle of runs. It came down to the final minutes, until bubble MVP Damian Lillard hit two long range threes to put the Blazers ahead, and they never looked back, winning and making the series 1-0.

But the Lakers did not back down. Anthony Davis and LeBron showed much more aggressiveness, and they were able to tie the series, and take the lead in game 3, 2-1. However, an even bigger loss for the Blazers hit. Their star Damian Lillard had dislocated a finger. Luckily, it was on his nonshooting hand and he was able to play for a crucial game 4. But the Lakers showed no mercy. Outstanding performances all around helped give the Lakers a statement win, and put the Blazers in an impossible 3-1 hole. Game 5 would come however, a few days late. Teams around the league all boycotted their next games, in protest to police brutality and the owners’ lack of ability to step up and spread the black lives matter movement. However, after more than a few meetings, both sides got what they wanted, and game 5 went on. Game 5 the Blazers played without Damian Lillard, due to a knee injury he had suffered in the pre-

vious game. The Blazers, led by Carmelo Anthony and CJ McCollum put up a good fight, but in the end, LeBron’s triple double led the Lakers, as they won, and move onto the second round. The Lakers met expectations for the first round, beating a Blazers team that some considered the greatest 8 seed of all time. They showed weaknesses shooting from 3, but also showed that when AD and LeBron are aggressive and score first, they are almost unstoppable. As of when this is being written, the Lakers will face the winner of the Thunder-Rockets series, with the Rockets currently up 3-2. Expect the Lakers to be favorites no matter who comes out of that 4-5 matchup. 4 wins down, 12 to go, as the Lakers look to win a championship for Kobe in the craziest season the NBA has and will ever see. New prog ram helps senior s and residents with disabilities bridge technical divide

T

o help ensure access for seniors and persons with disabilities to resources and communication through digital technology, Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP) has awarded Rolling Start Inc., a non-profit organization serving people with disabilities, with a $5,000 sponsorship to support its new Digital Access Pilot Program. In addition to the sponsorship, IEHP will encourage interested employees to volunteer for the program, that launched September 1. Aiming to reduce the digital divide and social isolation experienced by seniors and persons with disabilities in the face of COVID19, Rolling Start Inc.’s Digital Access Pilot Program will provide eligible individuals who have restricted or no internet access with paid access for up to three months, a Chromebook and instructional courses. Program participants will be required to complete all instructional courses within a designated

time to keep their devices. IEHP team members will use this training as a tool to teach program participants how to navigate social media websites, access telehealth benefits, and how to use the tool to improve communication with their medical providers. “While we are in the early stages of this program development, we have purchased 50 Chrome Books and have identified 30 qualified individuals who could benefit from a program like this,” said Lisa Hayes, executive director of Rolling Start Inc. “With IEHP’s partnership, we hope to connect with even more individuals and work to empower individuals to access what they need, when they need it from the convenience and safety of their personal digital device.” To date, Rolling Start Inc. is one of 27 Independent Living Centers in California that are specifically designed to assist people of all disabilities and ages by offering an array of services that include: pro-

gram referral, assistive technology, advocacy and other services. After recently receiving a grant from the San Bernardino County Department of Aging, Rolling Start Inc. will become an Aging Disabled Resource center, providing additional services to seniors in San Bernardino County. “Partnering with Rolling Start in this way will allow us to further develop a program referral process through our Connect IE Platform,” said Carmen Ramirez, IEHP’s disability program manager. “This will allow IEHP and other organizations to refer eligible individuals to this innovative program and get them connected.
