l Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), a Mexican celebration, is a day to celebrate, remember and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. On this day in Mexico, the streets near the

cemeteries are filled with decorations of papel picado , flowers, candy calaveras (skeletons and skulls), and parades. It is believed that the spirit of the dead visit their families on October 31 and leave on

November 2. In order to celebrate, the families make altars and place ofrendas (offerings) of food such as pan de muertos baked in shapes of skulls DDM, cont. on next page

“We are very grateful for Amazon’s investment in the community and in our future leaders,” said San Bernardino Mayor Carey Davis. “This pathway program offers students a kick-start in a career in logistics, and broadens the scope of opportunities available to them.” Amazon

The Amazon Logistics Pathway Program will be implemented at Cajon High, from 9th – 12th grade, and provide students the opportunity to gain academic and technological education while obtaining real world application off-site at Amazon. “This (pathway) will become a national model,” said SBCUSD Superintendent Dr. Dale Marsden. “Amazon is not only preparing students for high demand, high growth and high wage industries, it also helps with youth employment as they transition to college.”

Amazon readily employs college students allowing flexibility to accommodate class schedules, and offers a tuition reimbursement program. “We are very grateful for Amazon’s investment in the community and in our future leaders,” said San Bernardino Mayor Carey Davis. “This pathway program offers students a kick-start in a career in logistics, and broadens the scope of opportunities available to them.” Other local organizations that received donations from Amazon this morning were Feeding America - $20,000; San Bernardino Library Foundation - $10,000; City of San Bernardino Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department - $7,500; Boys & Girls Club of San Bernardino - $7,500; and the Inland Empire Children’s Book Project $5,000. Parks and Recreation Director Jim Tickemyer indicated the funds would be allocated toward a new scoreboard in the Rudy Hernandez Community Center gymnasium as part of the department’s efforts to relaunch many of its children’s sports programs. “My first experience with Amazon was on Arbor Day when 50 – 75 employees volunteered to help us plant trees at Lytle Creek Park,” related Tickemyer. “It’s very gratifying when a community partner sees and appreciates what we’re doing and gives back to the department.” DDM and figures, candles, incense, yellow marigolds known as cempazuchitl (also spelled zempasuchil) and most importantly a photo of the departed soul is placed on the altar. It might sound somewhat morbid, but the Mexicans react to death with mourning along with happiness and joy. They look at death with the same fear as any other culture, but there is a difference. They reflect their fear by mocking and living alongside death. Living alongside death means that Mexicans have to learned to accept it within their lives. Death is apparent in everyday life. It is in art and even in children's toys. It is not respected as it is in other cultures. Children play "funeral" with toys that are made to represent coffins and undertakers. Death is laughed at in its face. Many euphemisms are used for death, La calaca (the skeleton), la pelona ("baldy"), la flaca ("skinny"), and la huesada ("bony"). There are refranes, sayings, and poems that are popular with day of the dead. These say-

ings are cliches and lose meaning when translated. For example "La muerte es flaca y no puede conmigo" means "Death is skinny/weak and she can't carry me." Calaveras (skulls) are decorated with bright colors with the name of the departed inscribed on the head. Children carrying yellow marigolds enjoy the processions to the cemetery. Families also visit the graves of their loved ones, cleaning the headstones, and decorating with flowers, and bringing food and music and dances are made to honor the spirits. The roots of Day of the Dead are pre-Colombian, and many of the symbols and practices are derived from the indigenous groups of Meso America (Maya and Aztec, e.g.). Octavio Paz, a native of Mexico and winner of the 1990 Nobel Prize in literature, observes “The word death is not pronounced in New York, in Paris, in London, because it burns the lips. The Mexican, in contrast, is familiar with death, jokes about it, caresses it, sleeps with it, celebrates it, it is one of his favorite toys and his most steadfast love."

OPINION&LETTERS for. Everything that came to mind happened to be out of state, many of them being in New York. Everybody tells you, “Shoot for the sky.” But I knew I wasn’t ready. I needed guidance and I needed to gain experience.

Local news matters

Fernanda M. Tovar

J

ournalism wasn’t something I spoke about as a kid. The only news I saw was with my parents on Telemundo or Univision. I still remember the day I learned about news production. As I was picking classes for my freshman year of high school, I noticed they were offering journalism as an elective course. My counselor explained the class doubled as the school newspaper. I thought to myself, “Wow, how cool would that be?” And soon I became fully absorbed into journalism. I became editor in chief of the paper at Arroyo Valley High School and became fascinated by the power of storytelling. As journalists, we need to be able to write, be photographers, be fluent in social media, know how to edit videos and pictures, and much more. When I graduated high school, I decided journalism was something I wanted to pursue. I wasn’t quite set on what my goals were, but I was glad I had a sense of direction and dedication. I’m currently a communications and journalism senior at Cal State University, Dominguez Hills in Carson. If things go according to my plans, I’ll be graduating in the spring of 2018 with my bachelor’s degree. As part of my communications requirements to graduate, I’m required to complete an internship at a site that relates to my field of study. At first, I wasn’t sure how to find an internship. I thought of places I wanted to write and work

Commuting back and forth from school is exhausting, so I knew I had to search for a place to intern close to home. I came across the Inland Empire Community News through a friend on Instagram. I started following the work of one of their editors, Anthony Victoria, and learned about their coverage. I reached out for a possible internship with them and was given a chance! It’s been a challenge because I realize I’m no longer confined to writing about the happenings of my university. I’m experiencing the world of professional journalism for the first time. So far, I’ve covered different events, taken photographs, written stories, and learned more about the essentials of journalism. My biggest challenge has been overcoming my fears. I’ve learned that in order to receive factual and accurate information and take great photographs, it requires assertiveness and confidence. I know it’s important to get over my fears to succeed in this business. Receiving feedback for photographs, captions, and stories has been an eye-opening experience. Anthony gives me tips on how to improve my writing skills without making me feel like I’m an incompetent writer. He is critical of my work, but it also supportive of my growth. Recently, I was able to interview a World War II veteran for a story. We sat and talked about his experience in the war and what his life was like afterwards. It was an honor to have a conversation with him because the war was something I learned about years ago. I never thought I would talk to someone who actually experienced it. I realize reporting about the events, issues, and people of my community is important to me. Sometimes we forget that local issues are also important. Some news is good, some news is bad. However, it’s important to remember that local news matters.

A healthcare victor y for small businesses By Sean Flynn

W

ith Congress stuck in the mud when it comes to healthcare reform, the President has issued an executive order that could positively impact the health insurance system for small business owners and their employees. As a healthcare economist, I have been extremely critical of both parties and their “solutions” for healthcare. Democrats have opposed any reforms to the broken and expensive system that they created while Republicans have rushed to completely repeal and replace the current system without working either among themselves or with the Democrats to find the best alternative for all Americans. Faced with that impasse on Capitol Hill, the Administration is moving forward with a series of directives that embrace commonsense, bipartisan reforms. These reforms could offer relief and security to millions of middle class families and hundreds of thousands of small businesses. It’s too soon to know how the directives in the executive order will be implemented, so it’s vital that both parties in Congress stop the bickering and make a bipartisan effort to ensure these reforms are enacted correctly. Continued inaction and gridlock is unacceptable because millions of Californians are still uninsured and countless Inland Empire families struggle with the cost of current plans. Their difficulties have been exacerbated by two longstanding problems that have plagued the healthcare market-

place for decades. The first problem relates to regulations that drastically limit which groups can apply for group insurance policies. Under current law, these policies are mostly limited to groups of employees who work for the same employer. It’s for this reason that we normally think of health insurance coverage as being tied to employment. But millions of Americans are either self-employed or work for firms that can’t afford to buy health insurance policies for their employees. In fact, only one third of small business employees nationally receive health insurance through their employer. These hard-working Americans include contractors, accountants, day laborers, and a huge variety of small business owners. Under current regulations, they are not allowed to band together to apply for group insurance policies. The executive order could fix that by allowing for “association health plans” under which nearly any group of employers in a similar line of work could come together to purchase health insurance coverage. Some obvious groups that might want to do this are trade associations, labor unions, and groups of self-employed individuals. By grouping together, employers could not only negotiate for lower-cost group rates but also empower themselves by choosing an alternative to the highly dysfunctional Obamacare exchanges, where double-digit premium increases and inadequate coverage are all too common. The Affordable Care Act has

been a great help to many, but expanding access to association health plans would provide relief to those who have been hardest hit by the dysfunctional Obamacare exchanges – the middle class and our small business community. The executive order could also allow employers from more than one state to group together to purchase association health plans. This historic reform would be the first instance of the federal government allowing health insurance plans to be offered across state lines. This alone would expand access and lower premiums for millions of Americans. As an economist and entrepreneur who believes in healthy, well-regulated competition, this is welcomed news. There is no good economic reason for limiting health insurance plans to only people within a particular state. It’s better to diversify across more people from more places. The greater the diversification, the lower the risks. And the lower the risks, the lower premiums can be. We may still be several years away from seeing all types of health insurance plans offered to customers across state lines, but the directive to expand association health plans is good news— finally!—when it comes to healthcare reform. Sean Flynn is the chairman of the Economics Department at Scripps College in Claremont, the author of the international best-seller Economics for Dummies, and an expert on free-market healthcare systems.

Word s t o T hin k Ab ou t: Th e ma ny f a ce ts , h is tor y of San Fran cis co

Dr. Bill Abersold Tony Bennett made himself popular and San Francisco even more popular by singing, “I Left My Heart In San Francisco.” The best description of the city is comparing San Francisco to the life of the proverbial “phoenix.” In spite of earthquakes, devastating fires, economic failures, it always rises from the ashes. It is a beloved city. Its virtues equalize and raise it above its vices. Whether it’s hippies, it’s sports, it’s Jim Jones’, it’s Bank of America, it’s Alcatraz or it’s Pier 39, its history is vibrant. Well worth visiting today. The Ohione Indians inhabited the hills and fog around 10,000 years ago. They left evidence of their ancient presence in the “shell mounds” -piles of shells and other

artifacts-that can be seen on the shores around the Bay. The second inhabitants landed in 1579 with the arrival of Sir Francis Drake. Nothing happened there until 1775 when the Spanish ventured north from Southern California on a religious expedition. The leader was Gaspar de Portola, in 1776 followed by the Catholics and the Missions. Soon the Ohione Indians were enslaved. Shortly the U.S. A. set its eyes on California in 1846. But the biggest was in 1849 when gold was discovered. In less than a year, over 50,000 came to S.F looking for their fortune. Following the gold bust in 1858 the Comstock Lode was discovered-SILVER. The ore wealth gave another boost to S.F. It was the period of Victorian style housing and the advent of the cable cars. In 1906, April 18, at 5:12 AM disaster struck: the San Francisco earthquake. It leveled most of the city and fires destroyed the rest. What was left, looters took. The history of San Francisco cannot be told without its sports. In particular the 49ers football NFL champs, with Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, the S. F. Giants with Willy Mays, Barry Bonds and, the S.F. Warriors with Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant. All three are world champions. The “City by the Bay” offers vis-

itors what few other cities in the world can combine. “Scenic beauty, pioneer history, and eclectic world class culture all in a compact location. It is a mecca for shoppers and gourmet’s delight.” Some of the better-known sites include: the cable cars, Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39, the Cannery, Alcatraz, Ghirardelli Square, Chinatown, the Golden Gate Bridge and Park, Haight-Ashbury, Union Square, Lombard Street, North Beach and Telegraph Hill. And I would add - the people. They are special. San Francisco spawned a bunch of social trends - some good and others not so good. Rev. Jim Jones for one. He migrated from pastoring a legitimate church in Indianapolis, Indiana in the early 60’s to San Francisco. He was a mesmerizing speaker and called several hundred to British Guiana in South America. Under his influences, believing the end of the world was near, he persuaded hundreds of his followers – men and women, young and old and children - to take a poison. Then there was Haight-Ashbury that gave birth to a social revolution that became the “hippie” age. Drugs, free sex, no worries, and wild living prevailed. It also spawned the Anti-Vietnam violence and opposition to the war. I’m not sure but I think there is another social influence that has

affected San Francisco’s image Alcatraz. It sets as a guardian, in the harbor, as a message to evildoers. Al Capone, John Dillinger and Robert Stroud were residents within its walls. Against this environment, just 113 miles south is a totally different culture - known as Monterey, Carmel (4.1 miles is due west) and, meandering for 17 miles is the most beautiful scenery imaginable. Huge, awe-inspiring trees flank one side, and blue sparkling ocean on the other. Carmel celebrates Clint Eastwood - his singing ability, his piano playing and his role as Dirty Harry. His stint as Mayor and the Czar of several world-renowned golf courses all will live on. But it’s the town of Monterey that captivates me - and all of its 43,000 residents. One writer has described it thusly. “Monterey is a gorgeous city on California’s rugged central coast. It’s Cannery Row, one-time center of the sardine packing industry, was immortalized by novelist John Steinbeck.” If you haven’t read at least three of his books: “The Grapes of Wrath,” “Cannery Row” and “Traveling With Charley”, you ain’t educated in American literature. Today Cannery Row is crowded with gift shops. Restaurants and bars in remodeled factories. The

highlight for me is the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium with many thousands of marine animals and underwater plants. Outside are harbor seals, sea otters and pelicans. The entire display is a National Marine Sanctuary. A bit of interesting history - for thousands of years before the white man settled the area, the native Rumsien people lived there. Very little is known about them, but we do know why they were there. It was the abundance of fish and wildlife. Also, the mild weather made this area an important part of Rumsien life. By the way, several of their village sites have been located within the confines of Monterey. On November 17, 1542, the world changed. Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo called the bay, La Bahia de los Pinos. Sixty years later in December of 1602, Sebastian Vizcaino, when he landed, named the territory Monte Rey Bay. To celebrate, they (200) held mass. One Hundred and Sixty-Eight years later in 1779. Father Junipero Serra said mass and established a Mission. A year later the Mission was moved to Carmel. On September 9,1850 the U.S. Congress voted to admit California as the 31st state of the Union. Amen. Selah So be it.

an Bernardino City Unified School District candidates Dr. Barbara Flores, Anthony Jones, and Abigail Medina were joined by Fontana Unified School District candidate Mars Serna for a forum held at San Bernardino Valley College on Tuesday evening. The four school board candidates answered questions from both students and parents during the event organized by community leaders and faith based organizations. In a Q & A format, the candidates were given 2-3 minutes on average to answer questions from the public relating to school curriculum, student achievement, health and safety, suspension rates, and learning supplies, to name a few. When asked about how she will advocate for student voices, Dr. Flores confirmed she has tried to push the board to conduct surveys to receive input from students. She also explained to students of the Board of Education’s role in approving funding for resources and services. “It’s the board that directs the money and the funds,” Flores said. “And it needs to be spent on you-for supplies and field trips. I would do that, and I am doing it.” Medina affirmed Dr. Flores’ point by explaining that SBCUSD already has several student representatives on the Board of Education that help give input on student needs. Jones believes SBCUSD could save money by providing students better learning material, such as tablets and E-Readers instead of books. “Our school district has already implemented a chromebook program,” Jones said. “We’d be able to focus on other supplies and resources.” In regards to campus safety and school policing, Medina said it’s important to hold law enforcement

accountable but also solidify a partnership that will benefit the community. “Family engagement centers are prime one-stop centers,” Medina explained. “They can use those spaces to sign up [for magnet programs] immediately. Parents can get the support they need right then and there.” On suspensions and eradicating the school-to-prison pipeline, Flores said the district has begun changing the way they discipline students. However, she did admit the district still has a lot of work to do. “I would like to eliminate any citation. Period,” Flores said. “We’re implementing a procedure where students cannot get a citation unless the parent is there. We have to develop a culture of kindness and of mutual respect.” Jones believes the district needs to implement better strategies to improve academic achievement. “We’re only getting 50 or 60 percent of our students to be proficient in English and Math, but we

have all time high graduation rates,” Jones exclaimed. “It doesn’t sound like an accomplishment for me. We need more instructional service and support staff.” On the issue of domestic violence, which was at the forefront of the North Park Elementary School shooting, Flores believes the district should work with crisis counselors and social workers to direct women and men to receive help. “Many of the people--students and teachers--have not recovered,” Flores said. “We need to all work with all the entities in our community. It is an elephant in the room.” Medina was asked if she would remain on the Board of Education for another four-year term if reelected. Medina said she’s committed to the students and her campaign, but did confirm residents have urged her to run for state Assembly again. “Right now my focus is the school board,” Medina said.

IECN PHOTO ANTHONY VICTORIA From left: SBCUSD Board of Education candidates Dr. Barbara Flores, Abigail Medina, Anthony Jones and Mars Serna answered questions from students and parents during a forum Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Serna spoke on the importance of providing a multitier system to help students of color. He said it’s vital for the Fontana Unified School District to have professional development for teachers to learn the essence of working with at-risk youth. “Our teachers and staff need to have coaches...so they can be better servants of our students,” expressed Serna. Despite receiving $40,000 of campaign contributions from the Academic Arts and Action Charter

of Costa Mesa, as listed on a state Fair Political Practices Commission Independent Expenditure form filed by the Inland Empire Business Alliance, Serna admitted he was not a pro-charter school advocate and said he would need to further investigate charter schools. “I’ve seen charter schools’ tremendous work,” said Serna. “At the end of the day, I would have to evaluate who to bring into our community to serve our schools.”

ore than 200 people ran or walked in the second annual Run Like A Mother 5K at Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, Oct. 21, which this year was held in memory of slain student Jordyn Rivera. The race/walk was hosted by the

CSUSB chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma National Health Education Honorary Society, of which Rivera had served as president and treasurer, and students of Health Science 404: Women’s Health, said chapter faculty adviser Angie Denisse Verissimo, who works

alongside Nicole Henley, who serves as the other faculty co-adviser. Both are assistant professors in the university’s Department of Health Sciences and Human Ecology and faculty coordinators of the 5K. Rivera, who was heavily involved in planning the race, was among those whose lives were lost in the mass shooting in Las Vegas on Oct. 1. The students, who were still mourning the loss of Rivera, decided to continue with the event as planned and dedicate it to her, Henley said. “They should be praised for their efforts,” said Henley, who credited the students for their hard work and dedication in planning and staging the event. Rivera’s parents, Mary and Albert Rivera, were also at the race, along with CSUSB President Tomás D. Morales. Time for Change Foundation’s executive director Kim Carter was also present along with her staff and nearly 40 women and children who receive services from their organization. The 5K run/walk is to raise money and awareness for the Time for Change Foundation and Soul Food for Your Baby. Both are nonprofit community organiza-

tions dedicated to improving the lives of women and children by providing resources, programs and services. The annual race is “public health in action,” said Verissimo. “It is a prime example of bringing com-

munity members and our CSUSB community together all while raising consciousness on the pressing concerns that our communities face and celebrating those community organizations that strive to address these concerns.”

he Sinfonia Mexicana Mariachi Youth Academy announces that Harmonia (Strings) Instructor Jonathan Palomar has been selected by Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan to join the world famous ensemble in November 2017. Vargas is traditionally recognized as the best Mariachi Orchestra in the World and has been performing since 1897. Some groups would challenge that in today’s entertainment industry but history and tradition seems to sustain that belief. Jonathan is the son of Rafael Palomar who was Vargas’s top vocalist for 20 years. Rafa as he is known is the lead instructor of Music and Performance for the Sinfonia Mexicana who is housed at the San Bernardino California Theatre and classes are conducted at Sturges Center for the Fine Arts in downtown San Bernardino. Jonathan Palomar has been an instructor for the Sinfonia Mexicana Mariachi Youth Academy for the last 3 years, enriching the Education of local students every Tuesday. He attended music classes at the University of Colorado in 2008-2010, and has been a member of Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano in Los Angeles since 2012. San Ber nardino hosts final Third Thur sday Food Fest By Ricardo Tomboc

A

fter a two-year run, the City of San Bernardino held its last Third Thursday Food Fest event on Oct. 19 at Court Street Square. The first Third Thursday Food Fest was held in October 2015 and has been providing the downtown area with a variety of gourmet food trucks. While the first Food Fest brought thousands to the event, with lines stretching across the parking lot and many vendors running out of food before the event was over, the crowds have been steadily getting smaller, and maybe the novelty has been wearing off. Many people said that they “didn’t have enough time during their lunch break to wait in line for their food”. Others stated how “they wished the event was held during the evening so that they could bring their entire family out to the fest.” And yet on this last event, there were still many first-timers who attended and were disappointed

that they had missed so many Food Fests in the past. Nancy Rawlizer and Bob Halbel work in the Court House nearby. They have attended nearly half of the events. They said “it was nice while it lasted, but the hot weather was bad at times.” Joe Banuelos is one of the instructors at the “Teen Music Workshop.” On several occasions during the past two years, the “Teen Music Workshop” has been able to bring several of their students and provide the Food Fest goers with many musical concerts. Joe was not able to bring any of his students to entertain during the final event, so he came solo with his guitar to sing to guests. “The Food Fest may come back in the future, but not on a monthly basis,” Director of Community Development Mark Persico said. First Ward Councilperson Virginia Marquez recently approved “Art Night” to be held at the 66ers Stadium, and reflected that she would like to see more events held in the downtown area such as the Food Fest.

At the Los Angeles County Fair’s “Dare to Fair,” Villegas earned two second place ribbons for a multi-color girls dress and pink girls dress. Gutierrez, for her crochet pieces, received first place for her dragonfly baby blanket; third place for a breast cancer scarf and poultry egg apron. In the knitting category she received first place for her silver shawl; second place for three items - ladies beige cape, baby bunny hat and mens blue slippers; and third place for baby slippers, ladies pink meow hat and a baby pink meow hat.
