tudents K-12 in the San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) have easy and immediate access to health care with the implementation of Hazel Health at the onset of the 20182019 school year at nine school sites. Hazel Health, based in San Francisco, is an innovative model that offers students a virtual health clinic through an iPad that connects them to health care providers who assess them in a matter of minutes – regardless of insurance or immigration status. According to Hazel Health CEO Josh Golomb, 90% of students return to class, contributing to a 40% drop in health related absenteeism. Dr. Lorraine Perez, SBCUSD assistant superintendent of Student Services, noted that Muscoy Elementary and Sierra High schools have seen signifi-

intended to assist school nurses. “This is not to undermine or replace school nurses, but provide support to school nurses.” Sharon Lip, school nurse at Muscoy Elementary and three other school sites, noted a key

benefit of the program is saving parents a trip to the doctor’s office for minor illnesses. “If a child has pink eye, for example, a Hazel doctor can preHealth, cont. on next pg.

This year the special honoree was Daniel “Danny” Flores, a veteran of the US Army who passed away in 2017. Danny was a member of the Psychos motorcycle club in the 70’s. San Bernardino City Unified is the first school district in Southern California and Hazel Health’s largest partner. “We find visionary leadership willing to try new things to support kids,” Golomb said about approaching SBCUSD. “(The school district) has a fantastic team that’s already doing so much to help its students. We hope to show how much impact we can make on this community.” According to Perez the program is congruent with the district’s first strategy listed in its Community Engagement Plan 2.0 – Health, Wellness, and Safety. “This effort is very much aligned with the school board which has rallied around to support the health and environment on campus; it adds so much

value,” Perez remarked. Hazel Health selects communities with high Medicaid and poverty rates, communities where Golomb hopes to have a significant impact. According to Golomb, the goal is to connect children and their families to local doctors, which in turn provides access to preventive care. “We’re always looking for new ways of bringing health care to the underserved,” Golomb said about his model that identifies health issues, writes prescriptions, provides triage and more. “Health care is more expensive in this country because there’s no easy access to preventive care, that leads to chronic disease which drives the cost up. There’s no better place to start than with kids.” Hazel Health school sites: Arrowview Middle School Del Rosa Elementary Del Vallejo Middle School Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School Lincoln Elementary School Muscoy Elementary Pacific High School Riley College Prep Academy Sierra High School San Bernardino High School

President Donald J. Trump bragged recently that the economy was the best ever. Unemployment is the lowest in 50 years, he says. Black and Hispanic unemployment is the lowest since unemployment statistical measurement of those groups started in the 1960s. His political strength, he says, is among white working people, especially in the south where he polls the best. There is some truth in what the President says. However, behind those statements lies a bitter truth that the President never mentions. “More than 37 million Americans live in households that struggle against hunger...Nearly one in seven households with children cannot buy enough food for their families...The rates of food insecurity were much higher for households headed by African Americans (21.2 percent — two and a half times the rate for white non-Hispanic households) and Hispanics (16.2 percent — two times the rate for white non-Hispanic households)...The food insecurity rate is highest in the South, followed by the Midwest, West, and Northeast. For those challenged by mathematics, that’s more than ten percent of the American public that “struggles against hunger. So, if the economy is the best ever, why is more than ten percent of the population having hunger problems especially if children are involved? Part of it is geographic; i.e. rural hunger problems are greater than urban hunger problems. We know that the region of the country, the South, that supports President Trump the strongest has the highest percentage of hunger problems. Rural America, especially in the Old Confederacy, suffers from hunger. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Blacks in the poorest state, Mississippi, suffer immensely; ditto New Mexico with the highest rate of hunger in the state with the largest percentage of Hispanics. The tie between “poverty and hunger is direct. “38.1 million people (11.8 percent) lived in poverty in 2018, down from 12.3 percent in 2017...More than 16 percent of children (11.9 million) lived in poverty in 2018...The 2018 poverty rate was much higher for African Americans (20.8 percent) and Hispanics (17.6 percent) than for whites (8.1 percent)...SNAP lifted 3.2 million peo-

goes to the pathologist, who conducts a thorough examination and makes a diagnosis. The pathologist also often conducts additional tests to determine which therapies are most likely to kill the cancer cells of that particular patient.

That work is crucial. Consider the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Women diagnosed with the disease at the earliest stage are more than six times likelier to live past five years than those diagnosed at the most advanced stage. Potential delays in that initial diagnosis could lead to delays in treatment -- and a decrease in survival rates. That's why the pathologist shortage is so concerning. The number of U.S. pathologists decreased by nearly 18 percent between 2007 and 2017. During that time, the "diagnostic workload per pathologist" rose by almost 42 percent. That's taken its toll. One-third of active pathologists are "burned out," according to Medscape's 2019 survey. And many pathologists are on the road to retirement. In a 2013 study, researchers found that more than 40 percent of pathologists were 55 or older. They predicted that retirements would reach their

Consequently, by the end of the next decade, the United States will be short more than 5,700 pathologists. Graduates of international medical schools are poised to close that gap. They already account for nearly one-third of the U.S. pathologist workforce. That figure is set to increase over the next several years. Nearly 45 percent of active pathology residents graduated from an international medical school. This year, 4 percent of international medical graduates selected residencies in pathology. That might not seem like a large number -- but it's nearly four times the share of U.S. med school graduates who chose pathology. Further, the percentage of U.S. grads selecting pathology has declined over the last five years. Graduates of the school where I teach, St. George's University, are increasingly deciding to pursue careers in pathology. Twenty-three of our graduates just began pathology residencies in states nationwide -- everywhere from California and Pennsylvania to Texas and New York. Over the past five years, more than six dozen of our grads have entered pathology programs. The growing demand for pathologists must be addressed. Graduates of international medical schools will be the ones to meet that need.

A major highlight of Skagway is the Chilcoot Mountain. Dyea is a next-door ghost town, and the climb up the mountain started there. It is 33 miles to Bennet Lake. However, today a train or bus takes visitors up the mountain.

kagway is my favorite city in Alaska. I have several memories about it. The mountains around it; the history of it; my friends that Stella and I met there. Before white people settled in Skagway, the Tlingit were there. It was founded in 1897.

The great gold rush in the late 1890’s attracted hundreds to climb the Chilcoot. Canadian Mounties inspected each climber for 2000 pounds of supplies. It took each one about 40 trips up and down the mountain.

They were a major Indian group in Alaska. They named the area. Skagway. Skagway meant, “the land of great winds.” So it is. Much of the city looks like the early 1900’s. Primitive. Steve Hites, a good friend, is a former Mayor and business man.

The Chilcoot climb is no more. A train was built. It became famous in 1943, when Skagway became a staging area for 400,000 American military. Why? To build the ALCAN Highway, to get to the Aleutian Island, to fight the Japanese.

He and his wife are devout Presbyterians. A few years ago, he was looking for a pastor and asked me to be their new pastor. Stella’s answer for us was quick, “Over my dead body.” Supposedly the population is about 1500 in the summer and 150 in the winter. However, a million tourists visit during the summer. I call Steve Hites the “Willy Nelson of Alaska.” He entertains each

land, Ohio museum. The honored musher was Leonhard Seppala. My final literary photograph is about Frederich Drumpf who arrived in the United States in 1885 at age 16, from Germany. He was a barber, but at age 29 he set out for Seattle. In 1898 he set out for Skagway.

The objective was to destroy the Japanese on the Kiska and Attu Islands. In 19 days of battle, 549 Americans were killed and more than 1,200 injured. The Japanese lost over 2,351 of 5,950 men. The Island of Attu was the last Island in the Aleutian war. Amazingly the Japanese left Kiska at night and when the Americans attacked at dawn the island was empty. Incidentally the Japanese General Yamasaki was killed and 28 were prisoners. The battle was the only time Japanese military were on American soil.

miles long. They stop each night and the next day they start based on the time difference the day before. The race is for 938 miles to Nome. The race honors two sets of important people: they established the Iditarod Race. It was spearheaded by Dorothy Page and Jo and Vi Redington. The second important item was the race to Nome with the diphtheria serum in 1925.

Imagine the situation. Commoners from the urban cities of Europe, the New England cities, climbing mountains, building a boat for the Bennet Lake and digging for gold.

The Iditarod is an Athabascan name. It means “river.” They were the only Alaskan natives that emigrated to the United States. They lived in tee pees. They also splintered in the U.S, Mexico, and Central and South America.

The Alcon highway was constructed during World War II. It begins in Dawson Creek and runs to Delta Junction in Alaska, via Whitehorse, Yukon. It was completed in 1942 and was opened to the public in 1948. It is paved all the way.

Back to World War II. The soldiers had to build the Alcan Highway. All 1,387 miles, through mountains. We’ve traveled it. It seemed impossible to build, but it was accomplished in nine (9) months.

The Iditarod dog race from Anchorage to Nome was first run in 1973. It lasts close to a month. The first 30 mushers to finish receive prize money. First place receives $50,000-more or less. The remainder scaled down. The race is 938

A few words about BALTO. He was a Siberian Husky and sled dog. He led his team to the final leg of the 1925 serum run to Nome. On his death on March 14, 1933 at age 14, his body was stuffed and placed in the Cleve-

A partner, Ernest Levine, and Frederich set up a restaurant at Dead Horse Trail. Because of Levine’s drinking, they severed their relationship. Mr. Drumpf-on his own-developed a menu that sold horsemeat, fruit and prostitution. He returned to Seattle with the same menu: cheap meat, plenty of food and free women. From there he went back to Germany for a wife. But Germany sent him back as a “draft dodger,” He returned to New York, developed his skills, became a prominent millionaire and died at age 45. His son, Fred married an immigrant from Scotland and they had several children, including Donald. When the older Fred was cast out of Germany, he changed his name from Drumpf to Trump. Fred, Jr. became a very rich millionaire and, on his death, he left Donald with a $500 million bequest. The rest of the Trump family is a well-known story. Amen. Selah. So be it.

exter Emoto, RN, a postanesthesia care unit and recovery room nurse at Loma Linda University Health, has been895A9060WEB.jpg inducted into the national Fresenius Kabi Donation Hall of Fame for his blood donations.

Emoto started donating his blood 45 years ago while he was attending Pacific Union College (PUC) in California’s Napa Valley. “I’ve always had a passion for helping people, and at the time, I simply hoped someone could benefit from my donation,” he said. Emoto has donated more than 113 gallons, making him one of

the highest blood donors in the western United States. That blood has helped nearly 1,500 individuals, estimates Lifestream.

most all of my donations have come to the Loma Linda University Medical Center, where it goes to the patients I care for daily.”

Representatives from Fresenius Kabi, an organization that specializes in lifesaving medicines and technologies, inducted Emoto into its national Donation Hall of Fame Wednesday for his contributions.

Since graduating from nursing school in 1977, Emoto has worked as a nurse — as well as a mentor for student nurses — with Loma Linda University Health. “I want future nurses to know that the blood they hang is coming from a volunteer,” Emoto says.

Emoto began routinely donating blood at Lifestream in San Bernardino, California, in 1982 after transferring from PUC to Loma Linda University School of Nursing. “I realized I could benefit the patients in my local hospital by donating,” Emoto said. “Al-

How to sur vive a panic attack when it strikes By Stan Popovich

D

o you experience panic attacks and do not know what to do? A person can experience a panic attack when they least expect it. This can cause a great deal of fear and anxiety for the person. As a result, here are six easy steps a person can follow when a panic attack strikes unexpectedly and how to overcome anxiety. 1.Take A Break: The first thing a person must do when experiencing a panic attack is to stop what-

2.Take Deep Breaths: A person should take some deep breaths to help feel better and to get rid of some of the excessive fear and anxiety. There are also many kinds of breathing exercises a person can learn to follow with the help of a mental health counselor. Taking some deep breaths can help a person relax right away. ever they are doing. A panic attack can be very uncomfortable and can affect a person’s everyday thinking. Take a break to help regain your sense of comfort.

3.Distract Yourself: A person should try to distract themselves from the panic they are experiencing. A person could get some fresh air, listen to some music, take a

The fact is that you will be ok and that it takes a few minutes for the anxiety to go away. Talk to a counselor and get the facts of what a panic attack is and what you can do when a panic attack occurs. 5.Don’t Dwell on Your Thoughts: A person must not dwell or focus on their thoughts during a panic attack. The more a person tries to reason out their thoughts the longer a panic attack

will last. Read some positive statements from your favorite self-help book to help overcome your negative thoughts during a panic attack. 6.Get Help: It is important to talk to a qualified professional in order to learn how to survive a panic attack. By talking to a professional, a person will be helping themselves in the long run because they will become better able to deal with any panic attacks that may occur in the future. Paralympians in the making: Califor nia Classic spotlights disabled athletes

A

ustin Olive hopes to make the Paralympic swimming team in 2024.

The 18-year-old Yucaipa resident is working hard to improve his time in the water and build his muscles. But along the way, Olive will have to qualify for a chance to make the team during events like the recent California Classic at Crafton Hills College. Held October 26 and 27 in CHC’s Aquatics Center, the Classic - hosted by US Paralympic Swimming - put a spotlight on para-athletes looking to showcase their abilities as they compete against their peers in several events. The meet was open to swimmers from all over the United States with any physical, visual or intellectual impairment. Several will move on to the Paralympics next year in Tokyo, while others like Olive are focused on future Games. Olive – or Auggie as he’s known – found swimming after he found it difficult to keep up with his

peers on the baseball field. Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, swimming opened several doors for Yucaipa High School alumnus, particularly when it came to addressing his competitive spirit, said a family member at the event. “Swimming makes me feel weightless,” said the current CHC student. “When I’m in the water, I don’t feel anything weighing me down both emotionally and physically. My stress and anxiety go down when I’m in the pool.” Several athletes at the Classic have similar stories, some of which are known while others are still being discovered. Event organizers invited the community to the event with the intent of introducing competitors to local residents. Several took US Paralympic Swimming up on its offer. “One of the greatest things about this day in age is the Games are becoming more and more visible,” said Erin Popovich, associate director of the organization. “And when we can involve communi-

ties who do not get to see the Paralympics in person or on TV, once they see something like this, they understand it.” The next stop for Augie and the other 44 Classic athletes is the National Championships in Dallas, Texas, in December. Popovich said the championships will lead to the Paralympic Games in Tokyo next summer. And then the fun starts all over again in anticipation of the 2024 Games in Paris, France, she added with a chuckle. Twenty-twenty-four sounds like it is a lifetime away, but Augie has no plans on slowing down just yet. “It’s pretty cool how fast I can swim even though I’m getting older and my muscles are growing,” said Olive. “Just because someone has a disability doesn’t mean they should be counted out. Do not ever give up.” You can follow the progress leading to the Paralympics online at www.paralympic.org/paralympic-games.

he Feldheym Central Library will be a “Come Write In” center for participants in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) this year. Drop in anytime Wednesdays in November from 3 – 5:30 pm in the Creation Station in the Jack L. Hill Lifelong Learning Center on the 2nd floor; Saturday, November 16 from 1:30 – 3:30 pm in Kellogg Room B; and Tuesday, November 19 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm in Kellogg Room B. NaNoWriMo’s Come Write In (CWI) program connects libraries, bookstores, and other neighborhood spaces with their local

NaNoWriMo participants (or Wrimos) to build vibrant writing communities. Every November, thousands of writers around the world congregate at Come Write In spaces to pursue their creative dreams and write the first draft of their novel. NaNoWriMo is shorthand for National Novel Writing Month, a worldwide celebration of creative writing that counted 500,000 writers in its 15th year in 2013. The end goal for NaNoWriMo participants is to write a novel of at least fifty thousand words between 12:01 AM on November 1st and 11:59 PM on November 30th. Quantity is emphasized over quality; the idea is not to produce the

Next Great American Novel, but simply to get one’s brain rolling by building characters, plots and ideas for one month to see what develops. NaNoWriMo is for everyone: elementary and secondary students who would like to improve their writing skills, armchair scribes who have always wanted to try their hand at fiction, and even published professionals. All of these free events will be held at the Norman F. Feldheym Central Library at 555 W. 6th Street in San Bernardino. For more information call 909-3818238 or visit www.sbpl.org

S

an Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) is giving K12 students and the community a glimpse into the art of filmmaking with its monthly lab series. The Inland Empire Media Academy (IEMA) series was developed to help students find their voice and develop an appreciation for the art and craft of film and visual storytelling. Labs, free to elementary, junior and high school students and $15 for members of the community, are held on Saturdays and participants can expect to receive a broader knowledge of film, TV and media production. "This is a great way to learn about everything that goes into making a movie or TV show right here in San Bernardino," said IEMA Director and SBVC Radio, Television and Film (RTVF) In-

structor Lucas Cuny. "It also gives people a chance to work with state-of-the-art technology and learn about the RTVF program here at SBVC." In the final lab of 2019, SBVC presents "Experimental Film" on November 16. This lab, taught by SBVC's Miguel Tarango, explores abstract and experimental films, new ways of thinking regarding content creation and expression and allows students to implement their visions using found footage. The series goes dark in December and restarts in January 2020. All labs are from 1-5 pm in SBVC's Media and Communications Building, Room 142. Registration is at valleycollege.edu/academic-career-programs/degrees-certificates/radio-television-film/film-fe stival/index.php.
