n August 4, San Bernardino City Council unanimously voted to proceed with a resolution of censure for Mayor John Valdivia.

Should the multi-step process result in a censure for Valdivia, it does not necessarily mean removal from office, but rather viewed as an official reprimand or condemnation.

“As we begin deliberation, as your mayor I’ve been meeting with residents within our community for many months,” said Valdivia. “Most residents are eager and ready to support positive change that will boost San Bernardino’s future success.”

oma Linda University Health officially opened the Dennis and Carol Troesh Medical Campus, home to a state-of-the-art adult hospital and Children’s Hospital tower expansion — a momentous occasion years in the making. Leaders celebrated with a jubilant ribboncutting ceremony on Friday, and patients officially moved in on Sunday. Built to meet updated state seismic codes for acute care facilities, the campus is home to LLUH’s new 16-story Medical Center and 9-story Children’s Hospital tower. The campus incorporates leading advances in patient safety and comfort and was designed to continue the organization’s 115-year legacy of care and healthcare education in what has become one of the most medically complex regions in the nation. Leaders thanked philanthropists Dennis and Carol Troesh for their lead gift of $100 million to the initiative. “This is truly a historic day in the legacy of Loma Linda University Health,” said Richard Hart, MD, DrPH, president of Loma Linda University Health during the ribbon-cutting. “There are no words to adequately express the sincere gratitude and excitement that we feel as we open these doors to the community.” Hart recounted his personal journey. He was born in the Loma Linda Sanitarium, which was located on a nearby hill and now houses two university schools. He attended the Loma Linda University School of Medicine and helped to move patients into the Medical Center’s cloverleaf towers when they opened in 1967. On Sunday, Hart took part in the transfer of patients to the new Medical Center and Children’s Hospital on the Dennis and Carol Troesh Medical Campus. “What a remarkable transition in one lifetime from a quiet sanitarium with a College of Medical Evangelists to a world-renowned academic health center known as Loma Linda University Health,” Hart said. “We stand today on the shoulders of many who have made this transition a reality.” The acute care facility is built upon 126 base isolators to reduce the impact of seismic activity. The Medical Center is the secondtallest hospital in California and has 320 licensed beds, while the Children’s Hospital expansion adds 84 licensed pediatric beds for a total bed count of 364. Kerry Heinrich, CEO of Loma Linda University Health Hospitals, reflected on the Seventh-day Adventist legacy of the organization, highlighting LLUH’s cofounder Ellen White arriving to the area in 1905 and remarking “this is the very place” that would be used to bring hope and healing.

The new campus, Heinrich said, begins a new chapter in that legacy. “This very place will be home to thousands of dedicated physicians, nurses, and clinicians, a place where they will provide world-class clinical care and education,” Heinrich said. “This very place will support the intense efforts of researchers whose discoveries will make an impact around the world.” LLUH leaders thanked the state of California for its support of $165 million in funding. State Treasurer Fiona Ma, MS, MBA, expressed her appreciation at the ceremony. “I want to thank the Loma Linda community for all your good work and your persistence in making this happen,” she said. A special additional ceremony was also held on the new facility’s fifth floor for the San Manuel Maternity Pavilion. Leaders thanked the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians for their contribution of $25 million. The gift, the largest in the tribe’s history, recognized the century-long partnership between the hospital and the tribe. Loma Linda University Health comprises eight schools, six hospitals, and approximately 17,000 employees. LLUH is the flagship academic health sciences center of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and it has sponsored numerous missionaries and served as a consultant for the establishment of the six other Seventh-day Adventist medical schools worldwide. “The future physicians and healthcare professionals who learn here will have many opportunities to train in multidisciplinary teams and come to understand that meaningful patient experiences must be at the center of everything we do,” said Tamara Thomas, MD, executive vice president for medical affairs at Loma Linda University Health. “It is my hope that the work taking place within these walls will transform the lives of both our current and future healthcare professionals and the diverse community we serve.”

Censure engaging in negative politics, instead of providing community leadership,” concluded Valdivia. After his initial sentiment, other council members shared their support to move forward with the censure process. “Mr. City Manager I’d like for you to address each one of these forthcoming items. Violation of the Fair Political Practice Mass Mailing Regulations…has Mayor Valdivia violated this practice? Everything on the charter is a violation; this is why Mayor John Valdivia needs to be censured,” said Councilmember Kimberly Calvin. City staff clarified that the item

was only brought forth not to immediately censure Valdivia, but to get the process started and vote to proceed with censuring. “I’m going to have to speak with a city attorney about this. I do not believe this is that process tonight. I think we are simply establishing to proceed with preparation of the censure resolution,” answered San Bernardino City Manager Robert Field. At the meeting it was also noted that Valdivia is entitled to due process and the city has hired independent investigators to examine the findings and violations. “I was the one that brought this forward and asked that we be given a report on what the procedure would be to censure the

mayor for reasons I believe to be valid. The statement I heard him read tonight was all deja vu all over again, I thought I was watching Fox News and listening to (Governor Andrew) Cuomo denying everything and blaming everyone else,” said Councilmember Fred Shorett. “We’re not censuring anyone tonight, this is the first step and all of us agreed to send information and evidence for investigation, those independent investigations are ongoing internally. I want to give the staff and city attorneys the opportunity to finish the investigation and bring a report back to us,” concluded Shorett. For more information, visit ci.san-bernardino.ca.us.

here is no doubt that vaccines in San Bernardino County are working against COVID-19 and variants of concern, including the Delta variant, with only 4 percent of cases since February 1 occurring among the fully vaccinated. The overwhelming majority of COVID-19 cases – nearly 96 percent – are among the unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, according to County’s Department of Public Health data. Out of 26,232 COVID-19 cases, 25,161 were among the unvaccinated or partially vaccinated and 1,071 were

among the fully vaccinated. You can view the County’s COVID-19 Data Dashboard for this and other information at sbcovid19.com. “This data proves that getting vaccinated is the best way to fight COVID-19 and protect our families and our loved ones from hospitalization and death,” said County Health Officer Michael A. Sequeira, M.D. “Get vaccinated. Get the shot. You don’t want to have any regrets when it comes to your health or the health of your loved ones, friends and co-workers.”

Statewide, COVID-19 case rates were nearly six times higher at 20.7 per 100,000 people who were unvaccinated compared with 3.5 per 100,000 of those who are fully vaccinated. Case rates among the unvaccinated are highest among 18-to-49-year-olds and AfricanAmericans in California, which are increasing more rapidly than any other group, according to the state Department of Public Health. Even more of a reason to get vaccinated is the prevalence of the Delta variant, which is 100 times more contagious than all the COVID-19 variants so far, accord-

fter waiting an extra calendar year for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, they finally arrived. For the USA’s men’s basketball team, it meant another opportunity to defend the country’s basketball crown, and win a 4th straight gold medal. But, it wasn’t as easy as the past 3 Olympics, where the U.S. breezed through almost everybody. This team had some major obstacles to overcome to get the gold, so let’s find out how they did it.

to an Australian squad that had some solid NBA players such as Patty Mills, Joe Ingles, and one of the best perimeter defenders in the league in Matysse Thybulle. The Americans were able to beat Argentina but, there was still doubt as to whether this team could win gold and not choke like the 2004 Olympic team that only won bronze. So, fast forward a bit, and here they are in Tokyo. It’s pool play time, now the games really counted.

This story begins during the opt out/opt in period for players. This is when star players such as LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Steph Curry announce whether they will be playing in the Olympics. It’s a big commitment. You’re going overseas and not resting during the summer, like many players want to. So, when some of the US’ best stars such as LeBron, Anthony Davis, Curry, and James Harden opted out we weren’t surprised, but we thought team USA may be in a bit of trouble. But, some stars did opt in, and Team USA was still very much the favorite going in to Tokyo thanks to having the likes of former gold medalist Kevin Durant, as well as the NBA’s best scorers such as Bradley Beal, Damian Lillard, Devin Booker, and Zach Lavine.

USA’s first pool play game was against arguably their best competition, France. France was loaded with NBA talent including Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert, a very good scorer in Evan Fournier, and a solid 3&D wing in Forward Nicolas Batum. The USA and France went back and forth until France made a surge in the 4th quarter led by Nets bench player Timothe Luwawu-Cabarot.

With the roster set, Team USA was ready to play in the annual send off exhibition games versus Nigeria, Australia, and Argentina. And it didn’t take long in these games to realize that USA was in trouble. Game 1 was against Nigeria and, it was disappointing. The Americans looked out of sync, lacking ball movement and making every possession a 1-on-1 matchup. They ended up losing by 3 to a Nigerian team that didn’t even have 1 NBA starter. But, there wasn’t too much panic because it was an exhibition, these guys were gassed from the NBA season, and they were without Devin Booker, Jrue Holiday, and Khris Middleton due to the NBA Finals going on. However, 2 nights later, Team USA would lose again. This time

The US couldn’t keep up and they started the Olympics 0-1. Now they were facing the possibility of not even making it out of the group stage. However, the USA got lucky, as the rest of the pool featured Iran and the Czech Republic, which only had 1 NBA player combined between the 2 teams. The Americans took care of business, finishing second in the group. Now it was time for the knockout stage. The US got a tough draw in round 1 due to finishing second, so they played Spain. Spain is a European basketball powerhouse that would easily have multiple gold medals if the US wasn’t so good. Spain was led by Lakers Center Marc Gasol, EuroLeague Star Rudy Fernandez, and a 41-year-old Pau Gasol that was still giving the EuroLeague and Olympics buckets. However, Spain wasn’t the same team it had been in the past decade, so the US was able to breeze by the Spaniards, winning 95-81. In the semi final, the US faced the team they had just lost to two weeks ago, Australia. But the US was ready for them this time. The team zeroed in on Australia’s main scorer Patty Mills, and the Boomers had no answer. Kevin

Durant could not be stopped, and the US won 97-78. Now they would play for gold, against the team they’d been on a collision course with since day 1, France. Boy, was this game fun to watch. Back and forth until the 4th quarter, when Kevin Durant reminded us why he’s a former MVP and Finals MVP. Bucket after bucket, KD could not be stopped. He finished with 29 points, and the US hung on to beat France 87-82. They had made sure to make their country proud, and had won the USA’s 4th straight gold medal in basketball. However, the win didn’t silence some thought that the rest of the world was catching up to the US in talent. After all, this year’s NBA MVP is Serbian, the FMVP is Greek, and the DPOY is French. But, I disagree. If team USA had everyone opt in, it would be able to boast a starting lineup of Steph Curry, James Harden, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Anthony Davis. That’s 4 former NBA MVP’s and a top 3 big man in today’s game. Not to mention the bench would include Damian Lillard, Chris Paul, and Kawhi Leonard, just to name a few. The bottom line is, while basketball is becoming more of a global game, the US still has the most depth and star power, and it will probably stay this way forever. Either way, congratulations to the US Men’s Basketball Team on the Gold medal, France on the Silver Medal, and Australia on the bronze medal. These Olympic Games may have started a year late this time around, but it was a much needed reminder that sports can unite a country, even if it’s just for a couple weeks. For now, we look ahead to the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, and the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. ing to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The week of Aug. 4, the Delta variant accounted for 98 percent of 127 COVID-19 cases sequenced in San Bernardino County. You can make an appointment or find a location to walk up and get a vaccine at sbcovid19.com. “The good news is that our residents are beginning to get vaccinated at a higher rate than they were two weeks ago which tells us they are listening to how serious the Delta variant is,” Dr. Sequeira said. “We have seen an increase of nearly 30 percent of vaccinations in our county.” San Bernardino County consistently rises to the top when it comes to daily doses of vaccines

administered per day in comparison to state averages in that last two weeks. State public health officials have reached out to San Bernardino County to ask for strategies and best practices on how the county is keeping its vaccination rate up. The County uses a data-driven strategy to reach our most at-risk communities and have partnered with local businesses and community-based organizations to hold vaccine drives. “From school superintendents to city leadership to hospitals to company CEOs, we are all vested in decreasing the spread of COVID-19 and improving vaccination rates,” Sequeria said.

Mural teaches youth about air pollution My Generation Campaign. When teaching children about pollution and climate change, Yassi and her team made sure everyone was involved and any questions answered. What they wanted to do with the group was to get them thinking about the dangers of emissions, while explaining how their voices matter and how they can make change. “We believe we need to raise awareness and give a voice to the youth,” shared Yassi. Project Fighting Chance and Sierra Club believe this partnership can help usher in an era of youth that can help preserve the environment.

“What I love about teaching the underserved youth about pollution is this shows them the issues going on around them,” explained Terry Boykins, Executive Director of Project Fighting Chance.

PFC, Sierra Club, and People’s Collective for Environmental Justice hope this is the first step of a great partnership. The mural, located on the backside of the gym, is used as a reminder of what these organizations are fighting for. “This mural is a celebration, it sheds light on where we’re at with pollution, with an eye towards making change,” explained Duan Kellum, one of three artists that created the mural. The idea for the mural was to help elevate public education on air quality, as well as a reminder of what they can do to help. “We want to use this mural as a reminder to these children, what we’re working towards,” said Yassi. When the teaching session ended, the children couldn’t wait to help paint their new beautiful mural; they lit up when they finally saw it. The mural will be unveiled in its finished form this Wednesday, August 11, 4 p.m. at PFC.

ourt Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is a nonprofit organization in San Bernardino County that provides advocates for foster children ages 14 to 17. Court appointed advocates are volunteers sworn in by the courts,

whose purpose is to create a relationship with their assigned foster child, serve as their voice in court, and provide any other support they may need until they reach adulthood. “Our advocates have all the rights typically a guardian would have, for example, they can be involved with the child’s schooling and the right to go into the court-

The connections were hard to make, it usually takes three months for an advocate to connect with a child, trying to connect over Zoom caused it to double to six months. So CASA and their advocates had to come up with inventive ways in forging these relationships. “When connecting during Zoom, the advocates had to get creative, one of our advocates came up with the idea to send care packages to their respective child. The care packages consisted of each child’s favorite snacks and they loved it, it brought smiles to their faces,” shared Navarrete.

Building these relationships was not easy during the pandemic, PHOTO LLUH    now with things opening up the CASA staff celebrating a grant bestowed by Bank of America last year. we will be taking our assigned child out to shop and allow them to pick what they want, we believe allowing them to pick out what they want gives them the power,” said Navarrete. The empowerment CASA provides doesn’t end at allowing kids to pick what they want from the store. The advocates give the child a voice, mainly in the courtroom. “Our advocates have done some great things for their child. We have one example where we had two advocates with their child at an event and the kids were siblings. They were reconnected for the first time in a couple years and our advocates pushed for visits with each other every week. They were even able to expand visiting hours with each other, then finally got them in the same home as well. With an eye towards building a better future for foster children, CASA does have obstacles to overcome. The number one issue CASA faces is volunteers. They currently have 183 children on the waitlist for an advocate, if you aren’t able to volunteer donations are also welcomed, for more information visit their website at casaofsb.org.
