een Read Week™ is a national adolescent literacy initiative created by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). It began in 1998 and is held annually in October, the same week as Columbus Day. Its purpose is to encourage teens to be regular readers and library users.

Leader s thinking ‘outside the box’ to save after school programs By Anthony Victoria

enator Connie Leyva (D-Chino) spoke on the state of after school education during a press conference at the Think Together headquarters in San Bernardino early Monday. Leyva authored Senate Bill 78 with the support of Senators Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) and Senator Ben Allen (DSanta Monica) to help offset the costs, demands, and expectations of the state’s After School Education and Safety program. ASES supports over 4,000 elementary and middle schools across the state by offering after school and summer programs to about 400,000 students on a daily basis. These programs operate mostly in low income communities, where about 80 percent of the population qualify for free or reduced lunch. Programs, cont. on next page
The 2017 event will be held Oct. 8 - 14th, featuring the theme 'Unleash Your Story." San Bernardino Public Library is planning two different events for teens during Teen Read Week. Both workshops will be at the Feldheym Central Library, 555 w. 6th Street, San Bernardino. The first workshop is a Creative Writing Class, encouraging teens to tell their own stories. It will be Monday, October 9 at 4:00 PM in Kellogg Room A. It is open to teens 12-18 years old. The second workshop is a craft class creating Halloween String Art held on Tuesday, October 10 at 4:00 PM in the Children’s Room. This class is also open to teens 12-18 years old.
