mpire PBS, KVCR-TV is calling upon parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts & uncles to recognize their high school graduates on TV.

The High School Senior 2020 project is a community service initiative to recognize high school seniors and provide them with the recognition they deserve, amid COVID-19.

“This is completely free…all you need to do is submit the student’s name and high school, a senior photo and a congratulatory statement. We are producing oneminute spots, featuring five seniors in each spot,” said Lillian

Vasquez, Empire PBS marketing coordinator.

“Currently, we have 45 students that are participating, but our goal is to highlight up to 200 high school graduates,” continued Vasquez.

The initiative was generated by Vasquez who says she feels that high school seniors were robbed of a complete graduation experience.

“We are going to acknowledge them for their hard work and success.

Many organizations are helping to make sure these students feel important and appreciated. One of those organizations that we would like to thank is the Frieda Berlinski Foundation for backing this initiative with a grant, which provided us with the funds to garner the manpower to bring this initiative to life,” concluded Vasquez.

She also shared that due to COVID-19, the Empire PBS and KVCRTV office is working at a limited capacity in response to following State of California safety practices and the grant from the Frieda Berlinski Foundation allowed them the opportunity to not only recognize high school seniors but provide working hours to its staff.

County urged to do better following safety guidelines

S

an Bernardino County, like numerous other counties throughout the state, is seeing a rapid increase in positive tests for COVID-19 — and worse, a significant expansion in hospitalizations due to the disease.

These restrictions include the mandatory closure of all indoor operations restaurants; movie theaters; family entertainment centers; wineries, breweries and tasting rooms; card rooms; and zoos and museums.

The County reported 423 new cases today, and hospitalizations continue to go up, with 461 COVID-19 positive patients in County hospitals today, which is up from 451 on Sunday, July 5.

This rise in COVID-related hospital and ICU beds has seen a steady increase since June 17.

The new restrictions will be in place for at least three weeks, after which the state will reevaluate the situation.

In response, last week Gov. Newsom announced new restrictions for all the counties on the state’s monitoring list, which includes San Bernardino County.

Newsom and other public health officials have largely attributed the recent spike in cases to people ignoring social distancing and mask-wearing protocols.

It is apparent that too many people have let down their guard and ignored safety guidelines that have been promoted these past

few months — social distancing, face coverings, proper hand washing, and especially avoiding social gatherings. Whether it’s been visiting their favorite bars and restaurants, or celebrating birthdays and graduations, we have felt compelled to get back together with friends and extended family, not seen in weeks or months.

We urgently need your help and cooperation. Every resident — young and old, men and women, in every community within our County — needs to do their part.

That means following simple, albeit mildly annoying guidelines.

and are being provided with medical treatment. Federal patient privacy guidelines restrict the release of additional information regarding the identity of the inmates or their medical treatment. One hundred and twenty-seven inmates have recovered from the illness.

All inmates continue to be provided with face coverings, cleaning supplies, soap, and are urged to wash their hands repeatedly throughout the day. They are rou-

Eight department employees have tested positive for COVID19 and are self-isolating at home.

A total of 89 department employees have tested positive for COVID-19. Fifty-two employees have recovered from the virus; other employees are expected to return to work in the next few weeks.

At this time recreational team and youth sports of any kind, including purposes of conditioning, drills and exercise activities are not permitted. It is unfortunate and we understand that children would like the opportunity to participate in their normal team activities but now is not the time to let our guard down. We will share official guidelines for recreational team and youth sports when they are made available by the state. In the meantime, we encourage you to do your part to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

How the Census can assist H e a l t h r e s o u r c e s a i d our cur rent reality

As states begin to relax their stay-at-home orders and communities plan for the reopening of local economies, many may be returning to work and engaging in more regular social activity. While the return to some semblance of normalcy may come as a relief, questions about one’s own health or the health of family members may remain.

Paola Avendano External Affairs Associate, Center for Social Innovation - UC Riverside Given the detrimental repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, Latino communities who are disproportionately vulnerable, among other minority groups, deserve to be properly represented now more than ever. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “Long-standing systemic health and social inequities have put some members of racial and ethnic minority groups at increased risk of getting COVID-19…Among some racial and ethnic minority groups, including non-Hispanic black persons, Hispanics and Latinos, and American Indians/Alaska Natives, evidence points to higher rates of hospitalization or death from COVID-19 than among non-Hispanic white persons.”

Many Latino working families have members who are considered essential workers and unfortunately make them vulnerable to the virus.

Due to this reality, there is a high risk of essential workers bringing the virus back home where they may have numerous family members living under the same roof, making the virus more likely to spread. Yet it must be made clear that no minority group is responsible for the spread of this virus. The racial disparities have long existed even before this pandemic took center stage, they have only now become crystal clear and have been exacerbated to the point that it could no longer be ignored.

The good news is that your participation in the 2020 Decennial Census can be one easy way to help alleviate this problem. Successful emergency planning and recovery

are due in large part to census data and an accurate count. With the participation of Latino families in responding to the Census, it makes it easier for states and the federal government to better prepare for future large-scale emergencies and pandemics like the one we are facing today. Although COVID-19 has forced the U.S. Census Bureau and other involved organizations to shift their census operations and outreach strategies, the work must continue in order to secure resources for the communities that need them most.

It has never been easier to respond to the census given that the questionnaire can be completed online, over the phone, or by mail–all without having to speak with someone face to face.

By doing your part in counting yourself and encouraging family and friends to do the same, you can assure that the schools, hospitals, roads, and other vital programs you utilize and rely on get their fair share of funding. Moreover, an accurate count means an equitable distribution of political power for Latinos to have a voice in decisions that affect them directly.

You can positively impact the next ten years of federal funding in the Inland Empire by simply offering 10 minutes of your time to fill out the Census. Do the future of your neighborhood a big favor and visit https://my2020census.gov or call the Spanish response line at 844468-2020.

Upon returning to work, people should continue to be smart and cautious while interacting with others. Following CDC guidelines and maintaining social distancing, practicing good hand hygiene and frequently sanitizing common areas or high-contact items, including doorknobs, hand railings and communal phones and printers, can be good preventive measures to help mitigate COVID-19 health risks.

Business associations, health systems, and governments are crafting guidelines to help mitigate risks associated with reopening communities, but additional resources may be available to help individuals navigate their own physical and mental health during this transition period.

Many may continue to have questions related to potential COVID-19 symptoms. To help, UnitedHealthcare provides an online COVID-19 symptom selfchecker to help people gauge their symptoms and consider what may be the next steps for care. The symptom self-checker is at no additional cost for people to access, and users of the self-checker tool will be asked to answer a series of questions to generate feedback on care options to consider, which then assigns assessment levels ranging from self-isolation to emergency care, depending on the severity and urgency of the symptoms recorded. A testing site locator feature provides updated information on nearby COVID-19 testing sites if recommended by a physician.

Some people may still need to see a doctor but may worry about the potential risk of exposure (or the risk of exposing others) with in-person visits to a physician’s office or urgent care center. As an alternative starting point for care, some people may continue to consider telehealth, which enables people to connect 24/7 with a health care provider via a smart

phone, tablet or desktop computer.

Telehealth may be especially helpful as an initial option for medical advice related to COVID-19, and to help evaluate other possible health issues, such as allergies, pink eye or the flu.

Employers also have a tool available for their employees. ProtectWell, a new smartphone app just launched by Microsoft and UnitedHealth Group, screens employees for COVID-19. Employees found to be at-risk for COVID-19 are directed to get a test and the app notifies employers of the results. The ProtectWell app is offered to all employers in the United States at no charge.

Access to mental health resources may also continue to be an important tool for people to have as they head back to work. Being at home and perhaps feeling isolated over the last few months may have had an impact on one’s mental health, and the loneliness people may be experiencing, as well as possible stress or anxiety brought on by the pandemic, should be considered alongside physical health.

Virtual mental health resources are available for those experiencing increased stress and anxiety. A free emotional support line (866342-6892) is available 24/7 to the public courtesy of Optum, which is part of UnitedHealth Group.

Staffed by mental health professionals, individuals may receive help without taking any unnecessary trips.

Available at no additional cost, mental health and wellness apps, like Sanvello, may also be great resources for coping with the ongoing stress and anxiety. Equipped with self-care tools, peer support groups, coaching and therapy, Sanvello offers a number of avenues to receive the help and support one may need as they return to work.

For people who used mental health services before COVID-19, some care providers offer longdistance counseling and other resources, enabling for continued care from the comfort of home.

Check with your providers regarding options on what may work best for you.

Taking care of physical and mental health needs may be imperative in the coming weeks and months as communities strive to reopen and individuals resume more familiar living routines. Using online and telehealth services may play a role in facilitating a smoother and healthier transition.

SBCSS selects new Assistant Superintendent of Student Ser vices

M

yrlene Pierre has been selected as the new assistant superintendent of Student Services for the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, County Superintendent Ted Alejandre announced today.

"We are excited that Myrlene, who has extensive experience as an educator for three decades in public education, will be joining our organization," Alejandre said.

"She has been a teacher, principal and district administrator in Southern California and has a passion for developing strong educational programs for all students."

Pierre will be replacing Randy Elphic, who is retiring from County Schools after eight years

as the assistant superintendent of Student Services and 24 total years as an educator and administrator in County Schools' Student Services.

In her new role as assistant superintendent for Student Services, Pierre will oversee the operations of the Student Services branch that includes the administrators, teachers and paraprofessionals who provide direct support to students in County Schools operated programs. The assistant superintendent position is a member of the county superintendent's executive cabinet.

County Schools' Student Services program annually provides education to approximately 6,000 students in alternative education,

special education, juvenile court school and state preschool programs.

Previously, Pierre served as the assistant superintendent of Educational Services for the Westminster School District for the past three years. She also was an assistant superintendent of Educational Services with the Claremont Unified School District.

She also was the director of Educational Services with the Magnolia School District for four years. From 2006-2010, Pierre served in roles as a principal and curriculum specialist in the Anaheim Elementary School District.

Pierre's scheduled start date with a County Schools is July 13.

Distributions and deliveries took place weekly to provide health agencies with a steady and consistent flow of needed PPE. “Fighting COVID-19 is a collaborative effort,” said IEHP Chief Executive Officer Jarrod McNaughton. “Putting PPE in the hands of those who support the health and wellness of our members and communities, throughout this pandemic is just one of the ways IEHP offered support to our partners during this time. high-speed rail ser vice into Rancho Cucamonga

he Board of Directors of the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) this week approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Xpress West to explore the possibility of a privately funded high-speed rail line into Rancho Cucamonga from Las Vegas.

The new proposal would represent an expansion of Xpress West’s currently planned service from Las Vegas to Apple Valley, using right of way through the Cajon Pass along the Interstate 15 freeway and eventually connecting with the Rancho Cucamonga Metrolink station. The two phases would be privately built and managed by Xpress West.

“SBCTA is eager to explore innovative transportation solutions that incorporate emerging technologies, reduce the carbon footprint and protect the public interest. The MOU allows us to work with Xpress West in looking outside the box in considering the possibility of a privately built and managed rail system through the Cajon Pass between Apple Valley and Rancho Cucamonga,” said Ray Wolfe, SBCTA’s Executive Director.

he College of Arts and Letters at Cal State San Bernardino has named Luis Esparza, communication studies major, as its 2019-20 Outstanding Graduate Student and Brenda Flores, philosophy major, as its Outstanding Undergraduate Student.

Typically, Esparza and Flores would be honored at the college’s 2020 commencement ceremony, but the event, along with the other colleges’ commencements, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Esparza, who also received his bachelor’s degree in public relations and media studies from

CSUSB, identifies as “a queer Chicano/x junior scholar who specializes in Decolonial studies, Indigenous methodologies, Indigenous pedagogical methods, Queer rural studies, Queer history, Mexican masculinities, and mass communication studies.”

His thesis “Desde La Preferia De La Milpa: Testimonios of MSM de Los Ranchos y Pueblos” is centralized in the experiences of men who have sex with men (MSM) in rural parts of Mexico. Specifically, it focuses on the resistance methods MSM implement to navigate oppressive ideologies that stem from different moments in Mexican history such as the colonial era, exclusionist nation building,

“I come from a long line of warriors, campesinos, and activists who continuously battle to put an end to the dehumanization and symbolic annihilation of people of color, LGBTQIA+, and other marginalized groups,” he said. “I hope to continue this legacy through my education and activism.”

Flores began her higher education journey at UC Berkeley, but left due to financial hardships.

After finishing her general education requirements and earning her associate degree in philosophy at Chaffey College, she transferred to CSUSB. “My journey to get my degree had not been a short one, but it has been worth the wait,” she said.

While on campus, Flores, who is dedicated to a vegan lifestyle, and her friends started the Students
