“It’s a great honor to be recognized by the Rialto Democratic Club for my advocacy on behalf of businesses in the city. At the chamber of commerce we help businesses, especially small businesses and guide them towards tools and resources to ensure their success…I don’t do any of this with the intention of recognition, so it feels nice to be recognized tonight,” said Calderon. The awards ceremony was emceed by Rialto Unified School District Communications/Media Services Agent Syeda Jafri and featured Keynote Speaker Dr. Daniel Walker. “We have accomplished a lot over the past year: defeating Donald Trump, defeating Governor Gavin Newsom's recall, electing President Joe Biden and the first woman of color Vice President Kamala Harris. Despite these successes, the last administration showed me how imperative it is to ensure our voice is heard on every level,” said Rialto Democratic Club President Daphne A. Hawkins. After high school, Hunter plans to follow in his father’s footsteps and enlist in the United States Marine Corps. Hunter’s future aspiration is to start his own business in commercial websites. In his free time, Hunter said he enjoys spending time with friends and reading. His favorite subject is history. His favorite book is “The Testing” by Joelle Charbonneau. He is also a wrestler. ep. Pete Aguilar introduced the Jerry Lewis VA Clinic Act, legislation to rename the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Loma Linda VA clinic in Redlands after former Congressman and San Bernardino County native Jerry Lewis, who passed away earlier this year. Lewis served as Chairman of the Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development and Independent Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee before serving as the Chairman of the full House Committee on Appropriations, where he helped secure billions of dollars in federal investments for the VA. “Jerry Lewis was a giant in our community and dedicated his life and career to serving San Bernardino County. As a member and eventual Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, Jerry was a vocal advocate for federal investment into our region, and never stopped fighting for veterans’ access to the highest quality health care and services. I’m proud to introduce this legislation to memorialize and honor Congressman Lewis for his lifetime of dedicated service,” said Aguilar. Rep. Ken Calvert, who served in Congress with Jerry Lewis, is an original cosponsor of the bill. Both Aguilar and Calvert serve on the House Appropriations Committee, the committee responsible for providing funding for federal agencies and programs. “Throughout his distinguished career in public service, my friend Jerry Lewis worked tirelessly for those he represented, especially our veterans, and I believe it’s a

“Jerry spent his life advocating for our community, and we’re thrilled to see him honored in this way. We’re grateful to all of his former colleagues in the House of Representatives for helping preserve his legacy of service here in San Bernardino County and continue his great work on behalf of our Veterans.” The Jerry Lewis VA Clinic Act is now pending before the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

Tumultuous 2020 provides inspiration to Redlands ar tist John Andrews By Eric Sandoval

R

edlands rock artist John Andrews released his 4track EP All Saints this past April on all music platforms. “I got the inspiration for this album from the personal challenges of the pandemic, as well as seeing what society has had to go through over the past year,” shared Andrews. Andrews’ first track, What Makes You So Sure?, sets the mood for the album with a catchy hook throughout the song. The theme of doubt is apparent, and the hook reinforces that feeling of having self-doubt. “I wrote the hook on a piece of paper, then I sat on it for a little and thought of the lyrical themes to go with it. As I wrote it out, I developed the idea of how a doubtful frame of mind can be lonely,” said Andrews. Andrews’ next song, Cracked, is focused on the challenges that come with mental health. In the opening line Andrews says, “All is good inside my mind”, but throughout the track it’s clear

there must be some soul searching to truly reach that feat. “In Cracked, I focus on the idea that for me everything is fine, but it isn’t. Sometimes you must lose your mind to gain it,” explained Andrews. His third track, Along for the Ride, has a bluesy theme that focuses on a tumultuous 2020. “This song has more urgency and speaks on how people don’t think for themselves, they just line up on one side and that’s it, we don’t treat each other the same,” shared Andrews. His title track and final song off the EP is All Saints. This song has an important meaning of working to be better and truly completes the theme of this EP. “The song was written years ago, a priest once told me that even saints are sinners, they just keep trying to be better. This song has an important message that we just need to keep working to be better,” explained Andrews. Andrews credits his inspiration for this project to what was hap-

pening in 2020, and feels this project is better than anything he’s done before because the inspiration wasn’t money or fame, but simply to express his feelings. “I haven’t made music since 2015, but after staying home and seeing what was going on in the world, I got that itch and inspiration again,” said Andrews. In his first project since 2015, Andrews captures a lot of what 2020 was and how a lot of society is dealing with the fallout. “When I was sequencing the songs out, they followed a common trend, which is a response to what we all endured in 2020. My last two tracks focus on us rising above to be our best and not feed into hate,” shared Andrews. All Saints captures the feeling of 2020 but doesn’t allow the listener to fall victim to a negative feeling, instead Andrews preaches the power of creating positive change. All Saints EP is available on all music platforms and the music video for the title track, All Saints can be found on Youtube.

San Ber nardino Symphony receives largest gift in its histor y

I

n its most compelling sign of resurgence since beginning to emerge from the COVID pandemic, the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra has received the largest gift in its history: $2 million. The donation, from the Paramo family, places the funds directly into the orchestra’s endowment. “We were overwhelmed with the generosity of this donation,” said orchestra board president Dean McVay, adding, “a gift like this will make it possible for us to positively impact more people than ever before.” Along with its 93-year history of orchestral music-making, the

Symphony is known for its collaborations with local schools, colleges, and community organizations to ensure unhindered access to the arts for all. They regularly perform free annual concerts for over 3,000 Inland Empire students. Even during the pandemic shutdown, they were able to provide a full digital concert as a gift to the entire San Bernardino City Unified School District. The $2 million boost to the endowment is exactly the scale of gift the orchestra has long sought as the cornerstone of a new endowment campaign. An endowment is money kept in perpetuity, kicking off investment income

each year used to offset operating costs. Gifts of this size are unusual for regional orchestras. The $2 million gift is the largest in dollar terms the San Bernardino Symphony has ever received, even outpacing a generous $1 million dollar bequest by former Board member Frank Plash in 2007. The gift has already been paid to the orchestra, and comes with no conditions for spending it on specific activities, said McVay. As part of the Symphony’s established endowment, this gift will provide an additional $100,000 each year to augment ticket income and annual giving to cover

an operating budget that will be roughly $1 million this upcoming season. “This gift is a major vote of confidence in the musicians of the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra, our incredible board and staff, and in the direction we’re moving as we expand the size, scope, and community outreach of this organization,” said Music Director Anthony Parnther. Orchestra piccoloist Kathleen Dyer, chair of the musician members’ committee, said the “gift is so uplifting because it means our work matters, that the arts matter.”

“I think this amazingly generous gift recognizes that what the PHOTO RICARDO TOMBOC SBSO contributes to art and culFrom left: Orchestra Board President Dean McVay, SBSO Executive Director Dr. Anne Viricel, ture throughout the Inland Empire is something worth valuing,” and Music Director Anthony Parnther.

added San Bernardino Symphony executive director Dr. Anne Viricel. Symphony leadership is now working toward expanding the endowment further and has each pledged to include the organization in its own long-term planning. “We cannot ask others to help sustain our future if we are not willing to do so ourselves,” added McVay, “and the Symphony has been in my personal long-term plan for many years.” Concluded Parnther, “Our job as an orchestra is to create beauty and share it with our community. This gift makes it possible to enrich the city of San Bernardino and the Inland Empire even further. The future is tremendously exciting for the San Bernardino Symphony.”
