undreds of Rialto Unified School District parents and guardians came together at Rialto High School to attend the 11th annual Parent Summit on Saturday, Oct. 12, an event that underscores and celebrates parental engagement and participation in students’ academic journey. The event was energetic, highlighted by student performances, a parade of schools, rally and a myriad of parent workshops, vendors and resources. The goal of the summit, RUSD Board of Education Clerk Dina Walker explained, was to ensure parents/guardians were aware of the resources and have access to them.

Erika Del Carmen Ruiz Community Organizer Trucks idle outside our windows– churning out the black soot that helps to damage our lungs. With more warehouses and truck stops come the abundance of diesel trucks that create the current cruel reality of our daily lives. We’re struggling to breathe. And yet, the South Coast Air Quality Management District and local elected officials in the Inland region do very little to stop the harm. In fact, some of them turn the other cheek, while developers and corporations take up our space and provide us community members with very little in return. It was 87 days straight of smoggy air in 2018 and 85 straight days this year. The facts have proved that we breathe some of the worst air in the nation. Disregarding our testimonies because of “emotions is no longer a good argument. However, ignoring us because of our sentiments and experiences is in poor taste. Drug companies are eager to offer major discounts in exchange for a spot on a plan's formulary. On average, manufacturer rebates cut drug list prices by up to 30 percent. Last year, PBMs secured $166 billion in discounts and rebates. But these discounts aren't directly passed on to patients. PBMs keep a small portion of these rebates for themselves and pass the rest to insurers. In other words, the discounts that PBMs secure are not reflected in the prices that patients pay. That's bad for those living with autoimmune disorders, since so many of us rely on multiple medicines to control our disease. The Trump proposal would have re-categorized these discounts as "kickbacks" unless they were shared with patients at the point of sale. Estimates suggest if 100 percent of rebates were passed directly to patients, Part D beneficiaries would save $57 billion over the next decade. Savings like these would im-
prove health outcomes. One in three Americans reported "not taking their medicines as prescribed at some point in the past year" because of cost. All told, so-called "non-adherence" claims 125,000 American lives each year. Simply put, when patients can afford their medicines, they stay healthy. Absent needed reforms, today’s flawed rebate system remains intact -providing little direct financial relief to patients, continuing their struggle to afford their medicines. The Trump administration would have spurred needed reform and helped millions of patients. But instead, the administration has disappointingly decided to preserve an obscure system that keeps drug prices high. The government must enforce regulations on working hours, minimum wages, and worker health and safety. To ensure the success of these provisions, USMCA requires Mexico to establish a new system of courts for adjudicating labor disputes. All three nations must observe rules protecting migrant workers from unfair practices and ban any form of compulsory labor. The Governor’s support and the recent funding allocations to address homelessness makes all of this possible,” said Gonzales. Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who cochairs Governor Newsom’s Statewide Homeless and Supportive Housing Advisory Task Force, also chairs CSAC’s Homeless Action Team. As the conduit between the Task Force and the Team, Supervisor Ridley-Thomas is ensuring that best practices, programs, and collaborative measures recommended by his fellow Supervi-

Words to Think About: Origins of spaghetti pacted all of the Mediterranean area, including Italy. The third one is my favorite. It involves the adventures of Marco Polo. His supporters are legendary. I have an inveterate yen for spaghetti. I believe that spaghetti is the universal food. I’ve visited 84 countries, and if my memory is correct, I’ve eaten spaghetti in each one of them. In fact, for special occasions I choose the Olive Garden to celebrate. My desire for spaghetti goes back to my youth, my early teens. We lived beside an Italian family. Momma, Papa, Tony, Frankie, Rosemary and Barbara. They taught me how to eat spaghetti and drink wine. I was so close to the family that Mrs. Renzi walloped me whenever she swatted her boys. I belonged. The history of the origin of spaghetti is nebulous. There are at least three themes. One is dated about 1,000 years before Jesus with an origin from the Far East. Like India or China. The second has an origin with the Arabs and the advance of Muslims. In the 700’s A.D. They im-

The word SPAGHETTI comes from the Italian word SPAGHI, which means “lengths of cord.” The southern part of Italy is its home where it was commonly used with tomato sauces and fresh vegetables. The word PASTA is different with a Greek origin word PASTOS. There is also a tie with Latin which means “dough, or pastry cake.” My favorite usage is “pasta fagioli.” The worldwide enthusiasm for spaghetti was stimulated by World War II. The United States, Canada, Great Britain and other allied countries in Europe. The soldiers were fascinated by Italian food and historians state that the Italian pasta was the popular food. So, in my Japan sojourn I ate spaghetti for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I must admit, it was always delicious. Australia is an event in itself. First, the people are as independent as a hog on ice. But they are as friendly and helpful as all get-out. No waiter or tip. You want spaghetti, they say, “It’s over there.” You want coffee? “Get it over there.” I dished out my own dish of spaghetti, and whatever I wanted with it. It was always very good. Scouts par ticipate in major food donation program this Saturday in multiple cities
O
n Saturday October 19th the Boy Scouts of America invite you and your neighbors to support your local food pantries while you shop at your local grocery stores in the Inland Empire communities from Colton and Grand Terrace to Banning along the I-10 corridor and across the San Bernardino Valley up to Lake Arrowhead, Blue Jay and Crestline in the San Bernardino Mountains. The Gray Arrow District Boy Scouts will be “Scouting for Food” October 19th collecting non-perishable food items from shoppers in these communities at participating grocery store entrances. Stater Bros., Albertsons, Food for Less, Walmart and Vons are the larger participating grocery stores in the greater San Bernardino Valley up into Banning Pass areas, while Jensen’s and Goodwin’s join Stater Bros. in
the mountain communities. Gerrards, Trader Joes and Smart & Final stores in Redlands will join this support effort, as well as Dollar General and Walmart in Calimesa to Banning area. Please encourage your families, friends and neighbors to help the Scouts do a meaningful “Good Turn” for your communities by donating food items intended for needy families that reside in your local communities.

Scouts will be collecting donations at grocery store entrances in communities from Colton and Grand Terrace to Banning along the I-10 corridor, and across the San Bernardino Valley up to Lake Arrowhead, Blue Jay and Crestline in the San Bernardino Mountains.
Scouting for Food has been an annual “Good Turn” community service for America, performed by Scouts of all ages in the California Inland Empire Council since 2001. Collected food items are distributed to food pantries of local nonprofit agencies including the San Bernardino and Redlands Salvation Army Service Offices, the Family Service Association of Redlands, its Yucaipa Outreach Project, as well as Yucaipa Family Assistance, and H.E.L.P. Inc. in the Banning Pass. In addition, donated food items are passed to Operation Provider in the mountain communities and for the second time this year to the Inland Empire Ronald McDonald House in Loma Linda. These agencies all provide emergency assistance that includes food distribution and other needed services to needy or disadvantaged and transitional families. The area served by these agencies includes Colton, Grand Terrace, Loma Linda, Redlands, Mentone, Yucaipa, Highland, Forest Falls, Angelus Oaks, Beaumont, Calimesa, Banning, San Bernardino, Devore, Lake Arrowhead, Blue Jay, and Crestline. Food is especially needed this time of year as the weather cools and the pantries of these charities are at their lowest before the holidays. On October 19, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., when you shop for groceries below the mountains, Scouts in uniform will give you a list of suggested food items most needed by these service agencies as you enter the stores. This Scouting for Food program will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the mountain communities in early November. As you make your purchase, exit the store, present your donated food to a smiling Cub or Boy Scout as you place the food into the large collection boxes to which they are attending. Collected food will be sorted and delivered to these local community agencies by Scouts, their parents, and adult Scout leaders of the Gray Arrow District, California Inland Empire Council, Boy Scouts of America. Scouting has been building character and developing leaders for over a century in this country. Since its beginning in England in 1909, Scouting has been developing character in youth worldwide. If you have any questions in respect to our Scouting for Food program, please contact Ed Lucas, our Gray Arrow District “Scouting for Food” Chairman for 2019 at either edmech02@msn.com or his Cell: (951) 906-3713.
