A state of emergency. Four daunting words that should catch the attention of our state. On Wednesday, September 25, 2019, the Los Angeles City Council proposed a state of emergency on homelessness. Los Angeles declared a state of emergency four years ago on the same issue – there were 25,000 homeless then. Today, an estimated number of 130,000 people are homeless in California with 36,000 of the population in Los Angeles. That is an increase of 11,000 homeless people in Los Angeles the past four years. It is now an issue for Governor Gavin Newsom to follow through on this recent proposal making sure that California and Los Angeles receive the federal support needed in a state of emergency. We see them on the streets, living in their vehicles, on the sidewalks, and under freeway ramps. So listen up California. Policy makers. Residents. We have solutions on how to alleviate this emergency. Subsidized housing and building affordable housing are all proven remedies needed now. It’s your choice whether to listen, but more importantly, to act. Let’s talk about this and the stigma behind affordable housing. Let’s break this stigma and focus on the positive aspects of affordable housing. What if I told you that affordable housing could benefit you? Or that affordable housing benefits whole communities? Studies have shown that affordable housing leads to an increase in health, education, and neighborhood quality. First, we can focus on the issue of education. Studies suggest that students who experience homelessness or hypermobility are far more likely to drop out of school and suffer from learning disabilities and behavior problems. From the standpoint our children, we can see that this results in an ongoing cycle of poor academic achievement and poverty.

From a healthy community standpoint, increasing affordable housing options would help relieve the constant stress for families working fulltime but still cannot afford the rent. Think about what safe and affordable housing means to you. Many individuals in our community face the fear of losing their home every month. Whether you are rich or poor, we all need housing. By creating more affordable housing, people are able to focus on raising healthy families. Homeowners will benefit from local income and increased property values. We all want to create an environment that will benefit our futures. Therefore, how about if we start off with not rejecting the idea of affordable housing? It is time to take a look at a resolution that will work for you and your community. We must address the stigma surrounding affordable housing. For example this summer in California’s own state capitol of Sacramento where residents opposed building affordable housing. Neighbors “fear the apartments will continue a trend of concentrating low-income and homeless individuals....” Ending Homeless is one of our Grand Challenges. As opposition continues, the struggle increases, and this crisis will not get solved. Wake up California, we have an actual state of emergency, an epidemic occurring and as long as we fear change, things will only continue to worsen. It is time to say no to fear and yes to courage. It is time to move on from No In My Backyard (NIMBY) to Yes In My Backyard (YIMBY). It is time to speak up at city council meetings and say yes to building affordable housing. We know that affordable housing will not hurt our society, but will benefit it. Let’s step out with courage and embrace change. Let’s change California. Ray and Rebekah are graduate students at USC in the Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work program. This is an important issue to them as future social workers and concerned residents of Southern California. They hope that from this op-ed piece it will be a wake-up call for action to the government and residents.

Once again it’s a beautiful day in California today as I write. It’s sad it’s not the true state of this once Golden State. I was having my hair done and as I spoke again about my disappointment of our state many people in my conversation said they too have had enough and are looking to move out of California. They had recently read there is corruption in the Cucamonga Water District they’ve manipulated voting in their favor using voters as pawns to keep their positions. To extend their terms. I had read this too. We have an election on November in RANCHO to vote for new Water Board Representatives. I contacted Mark Gibboney a candidate by e- mail he shared the corruption in our community Water board. Now I know why when I am billed every month and my average bill is $200.00 a month - unbelievable. I don’t even water my front yard the lawn died after I put in the city device that was supposed to save water by monitoring humidity in the ground. I am angry I supported this stupid plan now. I will be voting for him on No-

vember 5th. As we talked to one another someone said that her friend’s husband is a parole officer and spends hours writing reports to get a felon back into jail because they shouldn’t be back in society. He’s told they’re sentenced to a year again only to find out they’re out in less then a month doing their crimes all over again. She said her husband feels like he’s beating his head against a wall. This governor Newsom has tied our Law Enforcement hands, has taken our rights as parents away through sex education distortion teaching them pornography. He signs bills taking our right to bear arms away while not doing anything about the increase in crime, homelessness, drug & alcohol abuse, epidemic of typhoid fever and bubonic plague in our inner cities.

Have you noticed the rat traps all over our community - it’s because of homelessness. Wherever there is filth there will be an infestation of rats and diseases they bring. In Northern California people have homeless living in their front yard, defecating and urinating on their lawn. When they complain to city officials their homes smell like

sewers they’re told nothing can be done they have rights too.

Our state is worse then third world countries currently. We have 16% poverty - citizens here are not encouraged to work but instead told to sign up for welfare. Soon we’ll be a country like Venezuela. They are still diving into dumpsters for their food. The recent manipulation of our electricity is another tactic of socialism which is what California leaders have led us too in this season. We must stand up and fight not just sit in groups and talk about it or gossip about it but move forward in action by calling, e-mailing and even going in protest to our liberal leaders’ offices and demand they serve us & enforce our laws, work to clean up our streets and bring order in chaos. If they don’t respond then we vote them out of office or soon we’ll not have a pot to call our own. Just speaking truth. Check out those in your district that are running for Congress, State, U.S. or other community positions you probably have corruption in your community too. However because you kept your eyes closed didn’t become informed you too will suffer in your community like inner city LA, San Francisco, San Diego and San Bernardino. Be informed as our founding fathers before us told us to be, John Adams stated, “ LIBERTY CANNOT BE PRESERVED WITHOUT A GENERAL KNOWLEDGE AMONG THE PEOPLE.” Also stated by Thomas Jefferson, “IF WE ARE TO GUARD AGAINST IGNORANCE AND REMAIN FREE, IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EVERY AMERICAN TO BE INFORMED.” Get involved don’t just talk check out those running for office contact them personally as I do. BE INFORMED! I’ll leave with this Ephesians 3:14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.16 I pray that out of HIS glorious riches HE may strengthen you with power through HIS SPIRIT in your inner being. With prayer all things are possible so pray with me as I pray everyday our LORDS will be done, as in in HIS word Heb 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from GOD’S sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before HIM to whom we are held to account. This will bring the corruption forward so those responsible for chaos of our state will be held accountable once and for all but not if you remain silent and are not informed. he California Classic is back at Crafton Hills College the weekend of October 25, and the public is welcome to watch potential Paralympians in action. The annual sporting event found a home in the Yucaipa-based college’s Aquatics Center a few years ago and has since become a favorite of CHC staff, students and faculty.

“It is certainly one of the events I look forward to the most,” said Heather Chittenden, Crafton’s aquatics director. “It’s just a positive event for the campus and the community, and every year we have a good time.”

Words to T hink About: One man’s weight loss jour ney It is relatively easy to imagine the trauma that he experienced in those years. Being black, grossly overweight, limited social life and above all, suffering a body that was falling apart. He told me he had to take medicine for his knees, his low back and other parts of his body.

Ken Ford is one of the most interesting men I’ve met. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, his family moved to San Bernardino when he was five years old. He currently lives in Redlands. Unfortunately, Ken’s father died when he was 6 years old. He was raised by his mother. Psychologists know that under normal circumstances, a child will cling to a pacifier of one kind or another. Food (a nipple, a bottle, baby food,) becomes the child’s normal choice. Unruly behavior, rebellion will often follow. Personally, as a child I began to stutter. Ken used food, more and more. By the time he graduated from Pacific High School, he weighed 230 pounds. He was eating constantly. As Ken grew older, his body became larger. His 6 feet 1 inch body became fatter and fatter. From about age 20 until age 50 he worked at menial jobs, working at YMCA and city schools from time to time. His weight became heaver until he weighed 620 pounds.

He describes his eating as a total fast food. He devoured a dozen donuts at any time; not one Big Mac but 2 or 3 at a time; french fries by the bucket. Food became the substitute for friendship, extended family and a few friends his age. There is a trait that Ken has that reflects a very real spirit. He’s a happy guy. From every comment he’s made and the number of pictures he has shown me, in the midst of his 620 pounds he was always in a happy mood. Similar to what exudes currently. With his father gone, his mother was his only family. My own childhood was so severe that I had problems. My mother gave me up when I was 2-1/2 years old. For years it contributed to my rebellion and stuttering. Emotional attributes. As a therapist I saw scores of patients who acted out their hurt spirits with over eating. Dates were out of the question. Long term friendships were a fantasy. They couldn’t have been happy. Their weight isolated them.

At his heaviest, Ken Ford weighed 620 pounds; today he is 230 pounds, nearly 400 pounds lighter. Back to Ken. His weight caused him all kinds of physical problems. He had to take several prescriptions: for his knees, his low back, his kidneys, his liver, his lungs; beside his stomach and digestive system. In spite of his weight, Ken worked diligently between age 20 and 50. He taught water aerobics, swimming classes, and taught basketball to kids. Then about ten years ago he began to think about “gastric bypass surgery.” The medical word is, “BARIATRIC SURGERY.” He was informed that as with all major procedures there are significant health risks and side effects. He was about 45 years old. Two major items were necessary. Ken had to lose 50 pounds and have extensive counselling with a Psychiatrist. I’ve known three people that had the Bariatric Surgery, and all three lost a lot of

weight, however, they began to eat “junk” food and gained back all their weight. Ken has vowed NEVER to gain his 387 pounds back. He currently weighs 230 pounds. Today, in spite of a number of traumatic events, Ken is a vibrant, happy man. His mother died last July and he misses her tremendously, but with his water aerobics job and his 1988 baby blue Cadillac and many friends, he is a survivor. Ken is extremely knowledgeable about all kinds of food. He examines every can and box and reads every label. He also swims ten laps a day at the swimming pools where he is an instructor in water aerobics. Eight classes a day. Ken has two important goals. He wants to weigh 220 pounds. That would be exactly 400 pounds from his high of 620 pounds. The other is to finish the excess skin removal

from his lower body. THE FOLLOWING THREE COMMENTS REFLECT WHAT MANY HAVE FOR KEN. Kayla is a co-worker: “Ken is vibrant and fun. Every time he walks through the YMCA doors, he has a huge smile on his face. He makes all of our YMCA members feel like they are a part of our community here. He is a huge asset to the YMCA and is constantly bringing joy and inspiration to all those around him. He is humble and always takes the time to smile, say hello and greet everyone he comes across.” Gabriel’s letter to Ken: “I made it. I am going to USMC bootcamp this Monday! I got the career I wanted, which is aviation mechanic. I just wanted to say thank you for inspiring and pushing me to lose the weight and to always strive to become a better person. I lost 50 pounds. Thank you for everything and best of luck on all your future endeavors.” Lindsey, the Executive Director of the Highland Y.M.C.A, gladly says: “Ken Ford comes to the Highland Family Y.M.C.A. every couple of days. He is an instructor of water aerobics. He always shows up with a smile on his face, ready to give everyone a great workout. he baseball seasons is wrapping up, and this postseason has been wild. We saw the Dodgers go out early, the Nationals make an unprecedented run, and the Astros claw their way back to the World Series. Astros vs Nationals, who will win? Let’s break it down. The Astros are as strong as ever. We all know about Jose Altuve, who hit the two run bomb to get them here in Game 6. There are also other stars on the ‘Stros guys like Carlos Correa and Alex Bergman. Not to mention their ace Justin Verlander. This team is strong, shows great chemistry, and is hungry to take back baseball’s crown. We head over the Nats. This season for them was all about defying the odds. After losing Bryce Harper, no one expected them to be here, especially after their rough start, but here they are. Led by their ridiculous pitching staff led by Max Scherzer and Stephen

Strausburg, they’ll make Houston’s life hard. But I don’t see them fully stacking up, at least on paper, to the Astros. My prediction: Game 1: Nats Game 2: Astros Game 3: Astros Game 4: Nats Game 5: Astros Game 6: Astros. I see the Astros being too much for the Nationals, as they bring the World Series trophy back to Houston. What a season it’s been! This MLB season brought untimely injuries, unfortunate deaths, and underdog stories, and all of baseball is excited to see how it ends.

County adopts resolution of suppor t for deser t protection

T

he San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors has adopted a resolution acknowledging the value of conservation, tourism, and recreation in “California’s rich desert landscape.” The resolution adopted October 8th, 2019 is a show of support for the last 25 years of desert conservation, which were catalyzed by the 1994 California Desert Protection Act (CDPA). October 31st marks the 25th anniversary of the Act which established Joshua Tree and Death Valley National Parks, Mojave National Preserve, and 3.5 million acres of wilderness. According to the resolution, the Act “catalyzed efforts to protect natural areas and military installations through subsequent legislative and administrative efforts.” It also “safeguards precious groundwater” which supports the “fragile desert ecosystem”, and provides recreational resources, solitude, and “undisturbed vistas and clear night skies.” The resolution was presented by Supervisor Dawn Rowe during a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Act at the Mojave Desert Land Trust headquarters on October 8th. The event is one of a number of festivities happening across the Desert to celebrate the last 25 years. This anniversary marks an important moment to appreciate the public lands we enjoy in the California Desert. The California desert landscape is one of the most biologically rich places in the state. The California Desert Protection Act was a landmark accomplishment for the California desert ecosystem and the start of one of the most sweeping conservation endeavors in the lower 48 states. It led to the creation of three National Parks, four National Monuments, and millions of acres of public lands to be used specifically for recreation, protection of cultural, historical and biological treasures, and streamlined renewable energy development through the 2016 Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan and the John D. Dingell, Jr, Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act of 2019. These protected lands draw millions of visitors from all over the world each year, bolstering local economies and creating jobs.

Highland student among top 30 in nation for Broadcom MASTERS

A

San Bernardino County middle school student from Highland will compete among the top 30 science projects in the nation at the ninth annual Broadcom MASTERS competition. Seann Torres of St. Adelaide Catholic Academy in Highland advanced from the top 300 Broadcom MASTERS event to qualify for the finals of the competition, which will be held Oct. 25-30 in Washington, D.C. Winners of the top 30 competition will be announced during a ceremony on Oct. 29. Torres competed at the 37th annual Inland Science and Engineering Fair, which was held in April in Fontana and organized by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools. Torres, who was an eighth-grader last academic year, has his project titled, "An Ecosystemic Analysis on Vertebrate Coprolitic Inclusions from the White River Formation."
