n the heart of the Rialto community, at the City Hall (290 W Rialto Ave.), the spirit of giving is as palpable as the autumn chill. Never Stop Grinding Impact, under the stewardship of CEO Darious Harris, is hosting its 4th Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway, providing a cornucopia of goodwill in the form of 500 turkeys to residents this holiday season.

The event, a collaborative effort with the City of Rialto and Healthy Rialto, coincides with the city's farmers market, creating a festive atmosphere for families to receive extra help this Thanksgiving. Slated for November 15th, between 10 AM and 2 PM, the giveaway operates on a first-come, firstserved basis. However, registration is required through Eventbrite to help manage the flow and ensure a smooth distribution.

"The cost of Thanksgiving is climbing, with turkeys averaging over $30, but that won't stop us from bringing holiday joy to the tables of those in need," stated Darious Harris, whose organization is well known for its community support. "Our goal is to make a real impact on the people who might otherwise go without. We're not just giving away food; we're sharing hope."

Local organizations, including Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP), Supervisor Baca's office, and Active Helping Hands, have rallied around the cause, proving that it takes a village to uplift a community. Mrs. Barbara, a key figure in coordinating the event, has sourced the turkeys and facilitated resources, ensuring the event's success. Harris adds, "Her contributions are invaluable, and she embodies the spirit of community service we champion at Never Stop Grinding Impact."

Harris continues, "While we do what we can, the event's success truly hinges on the community's involvement. We invite everyone to lend a hand. Volunteer sign-ups are open at neverstopgrindingimpact.com, where you can join our family of community supporters."

Never Stop Grinding Impact's Thanksgiving event is more than just a giveaway; it's a statement of solidarity, a testament to what can be achieved when a community bands together to support one another. In a year where the cost of living has skyrocketed, gestures like this carve out a place for gratitude and togetherness, embodying the spirit of Thanksgiving. For more information on how to register or volunteer for the event, visit NSGIMPACT.EVENTBRITE.c om.

CAPSBC’s 2023 Gala Raises Over $80K, Hails Clarke Family's Rebirth and Connie Leyva's Aid in Securing Millions in State Funding

O

By Manny Sandoval

n a starlit October 27 evening, the Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County (CAPSBC) hosted its 2023 'Jewels of Compassion: United in Community Action' Gala, drawing nearly 300 guests to the Doubletree by Hilton Ontario Airport and successfully raising over $80,000.

The annual event, which celebrated victories in the fight against poverty, was marked by poignant stories of transformation and resilience.

Former Senator Connie Leyva, recognized as the evening's Legislative Advocate Awardee, played a significant role in these victories. She was instrumental in securing $1,000,000 in state budget funding in 2021, ensuring the continuity of CAPSBC's mission to help people and change lives. Her advocacy and dedicated service to San Bernardino County residents were at the forefront of the night's accolades. "We were honored to celebrate with almost 300 esteemed guests," said CAPSBC CEO Patricia Nickols-Butler. "The celebration was a testament to the power of resilience and the unwavering spirit of community."

One of the evening's most moving highlights was the story of Justin and Sharmeise Clarke, recipients of the Spirit of Hope Achievement Award. Through CAPSBC's support, the Clarkes overcame significant personal challenges, restored their marriage, and regained custody of their children.

Justin, now employed, is a leader in The Way Recovery, teaching the Holy Warriors 1 Class. Sharmeise, having reclaimed her life, is a fulltime volunteer and ministry leader at The Way World Outreach, where she helps feed people experiencing homelessness weekly. Their journey from despair to steadfast pillars in their community encapsulates the Gala's theme of united action and compassion.

Following the Clarke family's story, Pastor Jessica Alexander was honored with the Venny H.

Newman Humanitarian Award. As an advocate for the homeless and Chair of the Interagency Council on Homelessness, Pastor Alexander's work through Operation Grace and beyond has shaped a better future for countless individuals across San Bernardino County.

The event was also a moment of recognition for the Gala's generous supporters, including Inland Empire Community News, which proudly served as an Opal Sponsor for the occasion.

Other awardees of the night included The Way World Outreach, known for its substantial community impact, and Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP), a local healthcare service provider deeply involved in community welfare.

"It was an honor and a privilege to share the evening with individuals whose lives have been positively changed by CAPSBC," commented Thomas Rice, CAPSBC Board Chair. The event was also dedicated to the community members who have benefited from CAPSBC's 58 years of service.

San Bernardino City Councilmember for Ward 6, Kimberly Calvin, shared her gratitude for the opportunity to serve with Patricia Nickols-Butler. Her reflections on her time with CAPSBC underscored the organization's profound impact on her life and those she has helped secure housing for over the years.

The Gala featured not only the opportunity to support a noble cause but also an evening filled with entertainment, including a live band and a silent auction. It spotlighted CAPSBC's unyielding commitment to its strategic mission of empowering residents toward economic stability, especially during times marked by the pandemic, high inflation, and escalating needs for housing and food security.

In the spirit of community action, the 'Jewels of Compassion' Gala not only celebrated past and present accomplishments but also set a luminous precedent for continued collaboration and support in San Bernardino County, shining brightly as a beacon of hope and change.

Local Elected Officials Gather in San Bernardino to Discuss Water

Community News

early 50 community leaders gathered at the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District on Saturday, October 21, 2023, for the WELL UnTapped Fellowship Water Workshop in San Bernardino. This workshop was part of a series of workshops held throughout the state by the 16 Graduates of the WELL UnTapped Fellowship Class of 2023 and their local state legislators. The water workshop was cohosted with Assemblymember James Ramos of the 45th District and Councilmember Rafael Trujillo, City of Rialto. The workshop marked the completion of the 2023 fellowship program by City of Rialto Councilmember Rafael Trujillo.

Councilmember Rafael Trujillo opened the meeting by discussing his interest in public service and water issues that stemmed from his memories as a young child translator. He also shared his experiences in the WELL UnTapped Fellowship Program (Program) with audience.

"During the water tours and discussions in the Program, I engaged with community members and industry leaders with a strong vision for addressing our state's water challenges and the opportunities available. I visited communities with several major water challenges in their water supplies, including arsenic and other contaminants in their water, resulting in a lack of poor health conditions and economic opportunities.

Those stories resonated with me because they reminded me of my commitment to public service and why I do the work that I do. I ask that you find a speaker or a topic this morning that resonates and inspires you to get involved with these water discussions because there is a place for all our voices in water."

President and Founder of WELL, Victor Griego, stated the purpose and reason why local Latino leaders should be involved in conversation in and around the water sector.

“California water challenges will require all Californians to be aware of what they can do to conserve water. These workshops prepare community leaders to learn how they can work together to make our communities sustainable as we expect more climate change challenges.”

Featured in the workshop was a presentation on water recharge by Dr. Milan Mitrovich Land Resources Manager, San Bernardino Valley Water Conservation District, and a presentation on the Fluidized Bed Bioreactor Wellhead Treatment System (FBR) by Joanne Chan, Operations Manager, West Valley Water District. These presentations were then followed by a panel on innovative water conservation strategies in new development projects with Joseph Zoba, General Manager, Yucaipa Valley Water District and Sal Aridi, Director of Special Projects & Business Development, International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials (IAPMO).

Time Capsule Opening at SBCUSD’s Dr. Mildred Dalton Henry Elementary School’s 10 Year Anniversary

decade of dreams and accomplishments were joyfully unearthed at Dr. Mildred Dalton Henry Elementary School during its 10th Anniversary and Time Capsule Opening on October 23, 2023, as part of the San Bernardino City Unified School District, the school, home to the spirited Trailblazers, celebrated this landmark event in the presence of a remarkable educator and a community bound by resilience and hope.

The time capsule, interred in the foundational year of 2013, was carefully excavated, offering a poignant glimpse into the school’s inaugural days. Amongst its contents was a paper penned by a young 6thgrade student, capturing her aspirations and reflecting on a time when she prom-

ised herself, “I’ll work harder than I am right now.”

Daisy Ortega’s words, “Education is the most powerful tool in the world,” written on a slip of paper in the capsule, encapsulated the ethos that the school embodies, emphasizing the transformative power of learning.

The capsule also contained a snapshot of daily life with a laminated breakfast and lunch menu from when the capsule was sealed. The students on that day were offered a choice of a taco burger on a bun or a hot dog, accompanied by baked fries for lunch—a simple yet fond reminder of school days.

The event was graced by the school’s eponymous founder, Dr. Mildred Dalton Henry, who, at 90 years old, shared her

harrowing yet inspiring journey. “My siblings and I defied someone’s limited expectations of us. Education was our pathway,” Dr. Henry asserted, reflecting on the harsh words once directed at her family. Her story is a profound counternarrative to the prejudices of history.

Principal Christopher Tickell acknowledged the gap between past expectations and today’s reality, “We may not be where we imagined a decade ago, but we are certainly further along the road to greatness,” he noted as the capsule’s artifacts sparked reflections of past and present.

From overcoming the segregation of Tamo, Arkansas, to her impactful tenure in academia, Dr. Henry’s life work has been a source of inspiration. As the first African American tenured at the College of Education at CSU, San Bernardino, her

efforts have shaped countless lives beyond the school’s corridors.

As the ceremony drew to a close, participants raised glasses in an apple cider toast to Dr. Henry, symbolizing the sweet taste of success and the shared ambition that propels the Trailblazer community forward. Reflecting on the unity and progress of the school, Principal Tickell expressed gratitude, “We want to thank our young people, their families, and all friends of education who have supported us.”

The celebration was not merely a look back but also a reaffirmation of Dr. Henry’s guiding principle: to “Dare to do the Impossible.” It is a reminder that the legacy of a school is not just in its history but in the ongoing achievements and dreams of its students.

Considering each community is unique in their water uses and effective conservation tools, San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District (San Bernardino Valley) established a groundbreaking Demand Management Incentive Program aimed to work with retail water agencies to promote reducing regional water use while also recognizing that different incentives and tactics may work for one retail water provider but not another. First-of-its-kind Interactive Digital Wall Unveiled at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital

This innovative project has been made possible through 100% donor funding, showcasing the power of community support in transforming the hospital experience for young patients and their families.

Community News

oma Linda University Children's Hospital has unveiled Loma Land, an interactive digital experience wall in the hospital lobby that combines technology and art. A first-ofits-kind initiative within a hospital setting, Loma Land offers hospital visitors, patients, and their families a unique opportunity to ignite their creativity and elevate their overall well-being.

Created in collaboration with ESI Design, Loma Land offers a three-part digital experience with three colorful kiosk screens. When children visit Loma Land,

they can choose an animated forest creature to accompany them along their walk to the elevators. They have the choice of a rabbit, deer, raccoon, fox, or a bear. For a surprise option, there's one with a question mark.

These forest creatures are more than just digital companions; they are blank canvases ready for personalization. Children can decorate them with a variety of accessories and flair, adding their own touch of creativity.

Once the customization process is complete, it's time for the enchanting moment of "releasing" their forest creatures into

the wild. This magical event unfolds on an expansive 60-foot-wide screen, serving as the gateway into a captivating digital world. Here, children can watch their creatures spring to life, interact with those of other young adventurers, and embark on exciting journeys of their own. “Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital has elevated the importance of positive, uplifting environments,” said Emily Webster, Studio Design Leader at NBBJ’s Experience Design Studio, ESI Design. “We’re grateful to build upon that legacy with the introduction of Loma Land, an immersive, interactive experience for children and families unlike any

other in the country. Seeing joy and creativity in patients as they arrive to the hospital has been deeply meaningful, and points to a future where healthcare facilities provide additional moments of happiness for patients as a holistic form of healing.”

“We are immensely grateful for the generous support of our donors who have made this innovative program a reality. Their investment in this project reflects our collective belief that it will have a profoundly positive impact on those we serve,” said Peter Baker, senior vice president and administrator at Loma Linda University Children's Health.

aptain's Mast, a trailblazing apparel brand rooted in the Inland Empire, has set sail in the fashion world with a line that's as adventurous as it is respectful.

Founded by veterans Jacob Luna and Christopher Manzano, the company offers unique, military-inspired fashion that captures the spirit of the high seas. Launched in September 2023, Captain's Mast presents a collection of shirts that embody bold and rugged aesthetics entwined with maritime history.

"Our shirts are for the adventurers, the modern-day pirates who appreciate a touch of maritime history in their wardrobe," said Jacob Luna, who still serves in the Navy after a decade of service. "We're mixing the rough and readiness of the high seas with the honor and tradition of military service."

Every shirt is a testament to Captain's Mast's commitment to quality, made from durable materials and crafted with an eye for detail. The founders' dedication to functionality and style is evident in their designs, which merge nautical and pirate themes with military elements.

"We started this brand to offer something that speaks to navy enthusiasts and those who admire the pirate's freedom on the open seas," Christopher Manzano added, bringing five years of Navy experience and a lifelong love of nautical lore to the table. "Our apparel is for those who stand out and are proud of it."

Their webstore, accessible globally, showcases a variety of sizes and styles to accommodate an array of preferences. With a strong belief that style is universal, Captain's Mast aims to reach a broad audience, catering to anyone drawn to the aesthetic of

the maritime world.

From the Inland Empire's Highland, the founders are not only paying homage to naval heritage but are also embodying the entrepreneurial spirit of their hometown.

As they prepare for their respective deployments, Luna and Manzano ensure that Captain's Mast's sails remain unfurled. They have instilled a culture of resilience and commitment within their company, reflective of their military values. The duo plans to expand their offerings beyond shirts to include a full range of clothing that continues to honor their vision of quality and durability.

Supporting their fellow service members, Captain's Mast offers a 15 percent discount to the military community with the code "Military15." Visit IECN.com to read more.
