he SCGA (Southern California Golf Association) Hall of Fame inducted its 13th class last month at Brookside GC in Pasadena in front of more than 200 guests. Brandie Burton, fivetime Solheim Cup member and two-time LPGA Major Champion, and Joe Novak, an integral name within Bel-Air CC’s history, were honored and inducted into the prestigious hall of fame. From the beginning of her career in the SoCal junior golf circuit to her success on the LPGA Tour, Burton set the bar high with no shortage of accolades. Before graduating from Eisenhower Hign School in Rialto, she was already the 1988 PGA National Champion, the

1989 U.S. Girl’s Junior Champion and a two-time winner of the San Diego Junior World Championships. With that resume, Burton proved to be Sun Devil material, joining the Arizona State University women’s golf team in the Fall of 1989. As a freshman, Burton quickly rose to the top. She won six of her first seven tournaments, capped off by a Pac-10 title, an NCAA Team Championship and a No. 1 U.S. collegiate ranking. That season alone, Burton proved she could compete with the best in the world. After participating on the U.S. Curtis Cup team and winning the North and South Women’s Amateur Championship in the summer of 1990, she would forgo her amateur status. With an Burton, cont. on next pg.

The facts bear this out: According to prisonpolicy.org as of 2018, there were 2.3 million people in U.S. jails. Just over half a million people in this country are experiencing some form of homelessness points out endhomelessness.org. And health giant Cigna, using the UCLA Loneliness Scale, reports that 46percent of survey participants noted feelings of solitude.

less person, perhaps we may buy something for them to eat. Even if it’s a dollar burger, someone who is truly hungry will appreciate it. We can give of our time to volunteer at one of the many places offering social services to the less fortunate. Besides giving the basics of food, clothing and shelter, we can take the moment to sit and listen to them. We can share stories. We can even learn from those who have much wisdom to offer. Giving doesn’t have to take a bite out of our wallet. Oftentimes, at a basic human level that’s all people need: just to know they’re not alone. They need encouragement. They need to know that someone truly cares, whether it be in person or in the form of an email or snail mail letter!

I’m not here to debate why they are in such circumstances. There are those who may say, ‘Well, they put themselves in their situation, why should I feel sorry for them?’ Perhaps. Maybe not. But that’s not the point. The goal is for us to stop and take pause of their existence. Let’s validate instead of judge. They are human too. At one time in their lives, they may have found themselves in the grateful and lucrative circumstances some of us find ourselves in. Chances are you might even find yourself nearing a similar and harrowing circumstance. Often, we hear of stories where a family is one paycheck from living on the streets. Both the reality and the potential reality should be hard to ignore. We all probably know someone who is experiencing these situations.

I remember being there, when I was homeless, locked up, and lonely. And there were days that just a handshake, hug, or smile of encouragement saved me from feelings of desperation. As we prepare for the holiday meal, shop for gifts, or celebrate a new season – indeed any time of the year-let’s ask ourselves what we can do to help lift the less fortunate out of the despair they may be in.

This year's flu season is nearly upon us. Here are four tips to stay healthy. 1. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. People should get the flu vaccine early. Every year, this shot prevents up to 6.7 million flu cases, 87,000 hospitalizations, and 10,000 deaths. The vaccine also helps makes the flu less severe for those who do catch it. The CDC recommends obtaining a flu shot no later than the end of October. The treatment takes around two weeks to become fully effective, so there's no time to waste.

2. Your mom was right: If you do fall ill, remember your mother's advice. Drink lots of fluids. Juice, Gatorade, herbal teas, and chicken soup can help fight dehydration. Menthol ointments and humidifiers break up mucus and make it easier to breathe. These treatments aren't fancy, but they provide real relief. 3. Remember that antibiotics won't help. Influenza is caused by a virus. Antibiotics, which only treat bacterial infections, are completely useless against viruses. Not all patients realize this. Many clamor for antibiotics at the first sign of flu-like symptoms. Such antibiotics won't make people feel any better. In fact, needlessly taking antibiotics increases people's risk of future infections. It gives bacteria an opportunity to evolve and become immune to treatments -- a phenomenon known as "antimicrobial resistance."

4. Antibiotics come with risks. Antibiotic overuse accelerates the spread of drug-resistant bacteria known as "superbugs," which already kill over 160,000 Americans every year. To fight these superbugs, Congress is currently considering the Developing an Innovative Strategy for Antimicrobial Resistant Microorganisms Act, or DISARM. This bill would incentivize hospitals to use antibiotics appropriately and sparingly. It would also encourage researchers to develop new antibiotics. Along with a package of market incentives for new treatments, the DISARM Act could save thousands of lives. So remember -- get your shots early, follow your mother's advice, and don't jeopardize your health by needlessly taking antibiotics. San Ber nardino Valley College to build new teaching hub for 21st centur y skills

S

tudents, lawmakers, board members, instructors, and community members gathered Wednesday inside a cavernous building where, for decades, San Bernardino Valley College students have learned to repair autos, airplanes and even helicopters. They came to celebrate the fact that this plain brick building -- one of the oldest on the campus -- is about to get a 21st-century overhaul to become a career training hub for Inland Empire students. Gov. Gavin Newsom allocated the first $2.5 million for the new Applied Technology Building in his recently signed budget. The college will receive $35 million from state construction bonds passed by voters in 2016. The district will match that from Measure CC money voters approved locally in 2018. Construction starts in summer 2021 on a 99,500 square foot building outfitted for modern workforce training. The new building will be accessible, sustainable, and filled with the tools needed for training students in water management, automotive repair, and machining, among other fields. Currently, there are about 5,600 students enrolled in Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses on the campus. “This is the fun part of the job,”

said State Senator Connie M. Leyva, who commented on the enthusiasm among the faculty and students as she toured their programs. She worked closely with State Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes to get San Bernardino Community College District listed among the districts receiving construction money from the state. “When we work together, we win together,” Leyva said. Gomez Reyes practiced law before she was elected in 2016 to represent the 47th Assembly District. “We fought to make sure that money came to San Bernardino Valley College,” she said. “We need livable wage jobs so students can enter the middle class.” It was a tough fight and a close call, said Frank Reyes, a college district trustee and chair of the board’s legislative committee. He said it involved meeting with leaders in Sacramento and convincing them that the Inland Empire needed some of the Prop. 51 funding, passed by voters in 2016. At the suggestion of a staff member from Leyva’s office, the district delayed a groundbreaking for the new building. State construction money can only be allocated for a new project, not one already underway. The advice paid off. Bill Rawlings, a member of the California Community College Board of Governors, said invest-

San Bernardino Valley College President Diana Z. Rodriguez earned the biggest ovation when she said that students deserve the kind of training that will make them the entrepreneurs and skilled

workers who will drive the economy forward. “We work day in and day out for our students,” she said. Mauricio Jauregui likes the sound of that. At 22, he is just starting out his training in auto repair and attended the celebration with several other automotive students. He said even if he does not get to see the new building, he is happy to witness the launch of something that will be a resource for the students who come next.

“I like what they said about earning a livable wage on one salary,” he said. “So many of us struggle.” More major facility improvements are on the horizon across the San Bernardino Community College District, which includes SBVC and Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa. In 2018, local voters approved Measure CC, a $470 million bond measure to repair and modernize classrooms, labs, veterans centers, and increase student safety.

here are not many literary phrases I enjoy more than proverbs or as Hispanics say, DICHOS. Their origins are myriad. From ethnicity, nationalistic, history, literature-including the Bible. I begin each day by rambling a tune and singing; “This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” From Psalm 118:24. At my age, 92, I’m glad to see each day, with all that it offers. Therefore, I take it at its basic meaning. In spite of an occasional pain I “rejoice” in it. Stella tolerates my scat singing. Ala Louie Armstrong. If the day turns out bad, I can always blame it on God. After all, He made it. Most of my thoughts have either a religious or psychological connotation. For example, I like one that comes from the preaching of Rick Warren. “HURT PEOPLE,

Individuals that mock others or are sarcastic, have a history of being hurt verbally. The next dicho relates to the first one. “Live each day as if it was your last. But plan each day as if you were going to live forever.” I believe it is self-explanatory. I heard a phrase today that piqued my mind; FACTS COUNT. I equate it with another of my favorite phrases. Al Sharpton and Democratic Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan are given credit for it. The Senator is deceased. “Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not to their own set of facts.” The basic problem with this adage is that many times opinions are said as if they are facts. Those individuals that are most prone to doing this are politicians and ministers. They are apt to use hyperbole, or outright lying. I’m sure that all of us know some that are noted for using hyperbole (exaggerations) and lying. For example, there are two words for Scripture explana-

First of all, the word “pessimism” is debilitating in itself. It is negative and breeds unhappiness. Unfortunately, it also affects others and even family members. Beware of its insidious affect. Norman Cousins suggests a valid answer. Basically, he is saying that pessimism is based on a lack of information. Pessimism is based on ASSUMPTIONS. I count the next nine words as a proverb. Even though they are phrases from a Gospel song. “Count your many blessings, name them one by one.” I take it as a daily command, not only on Thanksgiving.

Give the Gift of Love to a Deser ving Senior this Holiday Season

T

he holiday season is also the season of giving and a time to share smiles with those around you. As you gather to drink hot cocoa and sing carols with family and friends, it’s important to remember there are seniors in your community who would love to celebrate, too. However, many seniors live alone, without someone to share this special time. Home Instead Senior Care is once again offering the Redlands community a chance to spread joy to local seniors. Through the Be a Santa to a Senior program, community members can give a senior a special holiday gift. Since the program’s inception in 2003, the Be a Santa to a Senior program has mobilized more than 60,000 volunteers, provided approximately 1.2 million gifts and brightened the season for more than 700,000 deserving seniors nationwide. Last year, more than 800 local seniors received 3,200 gifts. “The Be a Santa to a Senior program is all about including seniors in the joy of the holiday season,” said Geneva Labate, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving San Bernardino County. “A simple gift shows them they are a loved and vital member of our community.” Be a Santa to a Senior is a true community program, with generous support from Southern California businesses, nonprofit

organizations, retailers, numerous volunteers and members of the community. The Home Instead Senior Care office serving Redlands has partnered with local organizations to help with gift collection and distribution. It’s easy to help. Visit one of the participating locations listed below and look for the Be a Santa to a Senior tree on display until December 17. Each tree will be decorated with ornaments featuring seniors’ first names and gift suggestions. Holiday shoppers can choose an ornament, buy the requested gift and return it to the store with the ornament attached. There’s no need to worry about wrapping — community volunteers and program partners will wrap and deliver the gifts to local seniors in time for the holidays. “While it may seem like a small act of kindness, it can really make a difference for someone this holiday season,” said Labate. “Watching seniors open the gifts they received through Be a Santa to a Senior and seeing the smiles and appreciation on their faces is one of my favorite parts of the holiday season.” Be a Santa to a Senior trees can be found at the following locations: Alta Vista Credit Union, 1425 W Lugonia Avenue, Redlands, CA Jose's Mexican Restaurant, 33527 Yucaipa Blvd., Yucaipa, CA Redlands Chiropractic, 620 Ala-

eigh Steinberg, the sports super-agent and inspiration for the Oscar-winning film Jerry Maguire, shared his own battle and recovery from alcohol addiction while praising mental health providers and supporters on Thursday, Nov. 21 at a benefit for Loma Linda University Behavioral Medicine Center. Steinberg, who represents numerous high-profile athletes in multiple sports, became addicted to alcohol after a series of tragedies in his personal life. Friends later supported him through a 12-step program that helped him overcome his dependency, he told the audience. “No life is hopeless. There is redemption, and a place like this can help you get through,” Steinberg told attendees while hosting the 12th annual Seeds of Hope event. The yearly benefit drew approximately 200 attendees to Centennial Complex on the campus of Loma Linda University Health. Supporters gather each year to share stories of patients who have successfully completed a recovery program, highlight the work of providers who care for patients along their journey, and raise funds to help patients in need. “Addiction can hit anyone,” Steinberg said. “It’s not something I had throughout my whole life, but it caught up in a great hurry.” His battle with alcohol began after his two sons were diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa that led to blindness, his father died from cancer, his home was damaged, and major problems developed in his marriage. “I wasn’t in denial — I just didn’t know it [addiction] was happening,” he said. With support from his friends, Steinberg made sobriety his top priority, and he now supports programs that help others reach the same goal. Seeds of Hope organizers say alcohol is a far-reaching problem throughout the country, with up to 40% of all hospital beds in the United States used to treat condi-

tions related to alcohol consumption. Edward Field, MBA, vice president and administrator of the Behavioral Medicine Center, highlighted the need for expanded mental health services in the Inland Empire. “We recognize the nationwide need for expansion of substance use recovery programs and the vast financial burden to the health care system, patient and families,” he said. The Behavioral Medicine Center has provided support to those living with mental illness for more than a quarter of a century. Field shared statistics about the current needs for substance use program support: Approximately 1 in 5 men and 1 in 12 women develop alcohol dependence during their lifetime. In 2016, 19 million Americans needed treatment for substance use, but only 11% received it. In 2009, nearly 4.6 million emergency department visits in the U.S. were drug-related The BMC offers comprehensive substance use programs for both inpatient and outpatient care. “Although these statistics are shocking, we are committed to doing our part by offering the full continuum of care through the whole person care approach,” Field said.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the

county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of the resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may contact Nationwide Posting and Publication for information regarding the trustee's sale or visit its website www.nationwideposting.com or call 916.939.0772 for information regarding the sale of this property. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the website. IECN writer Caden Henderson recognized as Youth Volunteer of the Year

ECN Staff Writer Caden Henderson was recently awarded the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) – Inland Empire Chapter, award for Youth Volunteer of the Year. According to the National Philanthropy Day nomination form, the award recognizes “service by an outstanding youth leader under the age of 21, youth group, or youthgenerated project that has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the community through direct financial support, development of charitable programs, volunteering and/or leadership”.

ball team, so I guess that’s why,” Caden shared. Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital (LLUCH) nominated Caden for the Youth Volunteer of the Year award because of his volunteer services for the pediatric patients. A few years back, Caden was hospitalized at LLUCH for about four days, and that’s when he decided to do something for the children in the medical wards. He has worked with the Child Life department, playing games and engaging in activities with the children, and he explains some of the procedures to the patients. He raised money to provide the children’s unit with Wii gaming equipment. Three years ago, Caden began to collect teddy bears for each patient to be gifted during the holiday season.

Outside of school, 14-year-old Redlands High School student Caden keeps himself busy by writing an aptly named column (Caden’s Corner) for the IECN Newspaper group, and interviewing celebrities and athletes for his very own YouTube channel. When he graduates from high school he hopes to attend USC or the University of Redlands to study sports broadcasting and/or sports journalism. In school, he’s on the freshman basketball team, but says he’s got a soft spot for baseball.

2019 is the third year for Caden’s Teddy Bears for Kids. The effort will begin November 29th and bears will be collected through December 19th. Various busi-

nesses in Redlands and Highland are collection/drop-off points. This year, Caden is on track to hit 1,000 bears for donation to the children. Asked what he would advise someone who wanted to start doing something for others, Caden answered, “Well, I would say, start, and then keep going. Do what helps others, because something as small as a teddy bear will affect someone in a positive way.” IECN is proud of this young man and his spirit of caring for others. We send congratulations to Caden as the recipient of the prestigious AFP Youth Volunteer of the Year Award. We look forward to seeing what’s in the future for this young man!
