8 Top local players from the Inland Empire were picked to represent the United States of America at the International Soccer Game on November 4.

Out of the 18 athletes, four of them were from the city of Rialto - Gabriela Ramirez, Natalie Cardona, Valerie Moctezuma, and Geavanna Flores were the four soccer athletes who represented not on the country, but the city.

“There were four girls from Rialto picked to play out of 65 that showed up to the tryouts. 18 girls were picked to participate in this exhibition game overall. The other 14 were from San Bernardino, Riverside, Moreno Valley and Bloomington,” said Lio Mejia, So Cal Select head

coach.

Rialto Unified School District honored Mrs. Nancy G. O'Kelley (middle) with the dedication of the administration building at Eisenhower High School (Rialto, California) on Monday afternoon. The recently renovated building will now be forever known as the Nancy G. O'Kelley Administration Building, a fitting honor for the former Eisenhower High principal. Mrs. O’Kelley's four-decade career as a teacher, administrator, and board of education member, has provided excellence in service to students, staff, and the education community of the Rialto Unified School District. As was evident at the event, Mrs. O'Kelley's commitment to Rialto has already impacted many. Now her name will continue on in association with Eisenhower High for generations to come.

The Rialto Unified School District office welcomed special guests, Mr. and Mrs. Claus and kindergarten students from Dr. Ernest Garcia Elementary School! then drove to Mexico together. It was the first time many of these athletes were traveling internationally,” continued Mejia. Mejia detailed how important it is for soccer players in the Inland Empire to shine, due to underrepresentation. “In Mexico you can become a professional soccer player at 14 years old. In the United States soccer is not a prominent sport…so there are not as many big names who come from our area and play professionally; so it’s important to get these athletes out there,” said Mejia. After the International Soccer

Game, Coach and Scout of Cholas of Tijuana, Jasmine Guzman, asked Mejia to bring back four of the athletes to participate in a camp. “Four girls from Rialto got invited to a camp. They will go out there for a week and enlist with the soccer team. At the camp the girls will go to school, travel to different academies, they will be taught how to eat, exercise, and go through team bonding,” concluded Mejia. Mejia stated that the So Cal Select team will be headed back to Mexico in January for another successful exhibition tournament. For more information, visit socalselect.org.

ews of San Bernardino City Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Dale Marsden’s resignation was met with shock and disappointment by yours truly. The announcement was sudden and unexpected. As a parent of three young children in the school district, I am sorry to see him go. Under his leadership there were tremendous strides made within the school district that include significant increase in graduation rates from 66.8% to 95.2%; a jump in the number of career pathways available to high school students, over 50 in all; and the reduction of the number of citations and suspensions. In addition, a dynamic internship program with San Bernardino County was established as another means for students to explore employment options. Dr. Marsden sent a home letter to parents/guardians last week informing of his impending departure, citing ambiguously that he was leaving to serve the region in another capacity, providing no other details. Having led the district of over 50,000 students and 72 schools for almost 8 years, Marsden noted that his tenure with SBCUSD has been the most incredible opportunity he could imagine. “Serving SBCUSD has been in response to a clear call on my and my family’s lives, he wrote and added that two of his children graduated from San Bernardino high schools. I can only hope that whoever the candidate may be that the Board decides to replace Dr. Marsden, he/she be able to rise to the task and lead the district with as much passion, vision and ingenuity as their

In other educational news, San Bernardino Community College Chancellor Bruce Baron, who has served the district since 2011, announced his plans to retire, stepping down on December 31, 2019. Under Baron’s leadership and in partnership with the board of trustees, campus presidents, faculty and staff, the Community College District underwent some record achievements that include: • Being one of the first in California to offer free college for two years to its students The Free College Promise, making higher education a reality for hard-working students in our community;

ommunities in the Inland Empire have historically been undercounted in past Census. This meant that cities in the region received less funding for schools and roads, particularly for afterschool and nutritional programs. oughly 40,000 environmental activists recently descended on Lower Manhattan for a global climate strike. Many of the protesters marched with a specific goal in mind -- convince Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli to purge $13 billion in fossil fuel investments from New York State's $210 billion pension fund. All across the country, environmentalists are urging public pension managers to sell their fossil fuel assets. If pension managers embrace divestment, the thinking goes, oil and gas companies' share prices would plummet. And firms would struggle to raise capital in the future. Thus, they'd shelve expansion plans and keep more fossil fuels in the ground.

• SBCCD earned community support for Measure CC, a $470 million bond measure to fund safe, secure, and state-of-the-art classrooms and labs where students receive the education and training needed to become skilled workers and entrepreneurs in 2018.

But the strategy is short-sighted. Divestment would punish retirees, not the energy industry.

State pension funds manage retirement benefits for public employees like teachers, firefighters, and police officers. And the plans are heavily invested in the energy industry. Nearly 30 percent of fossil fuel industry shares are held by

pension funds. And almost 20 percent are owned in individual retirement accounts. Because they're high performing, fossil-fuel-related stocks help secure public employees' retirement plans. An average investment portfolio featuring fossil fuels outperforms a divested portfolio of equal risk by 0.5 percent per year over the long run. That amounts to tens of thousands of dollars per worker over several decades. That's why divestment would hurt America's retirees the most. If they divest, the nation's 11 top pension funds would risk losing up to $430 million a year and almost $4.9 trillion over 50 years. Specifically, the California Public Employees' Retirement System and New York's five pensions would risk missing out on nearly $290 million and $120 million per year, respectively. In response to these losses, pension funds would be forced to cut pensioners' benefits. In Colorado, divestment could cut every pensioners' benefits by up to $400. Even before the divestment craze, public pensions were strug-

And divestment wouldn't even remotely affect energy companies' behavior. If any state pension divested from energy stocks, different investors would simply take the pension fund's place. Even if divestment did reduce energy companies' share prices, it wouldn't curb global demand for fossil fuels. Global energy demand rose 2.3 percent last year with fossil fuels providing more than twothirds of the increase. The outlook for energy is 50 percent growth by 2050, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, with fossil fuels accounting for 70 percent. If climate activists truly want to reduce emissions, why not support natural gas? This cleaner-burning resource has helped wean Americans off coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel. As a result, American energy emissions are nearing 30-year lows, while global emissions have spiked 50 percent. Already, methane emissions from natural gas dropped 14 percent between 1990 and 2017 even as natural gas production climbed 50 percent.

In the 20 states with the least-funded pension plans -- including New Jersey, Illinois, and Kentucky -retirement systems have only half the assets necessary to cover retirees' benefits.

n a little over a week, members of the Bloomington, Colton, and Grand Terrace High School bands will be headed to London for the London New Year’s Day Parade, a huge event attended by nearly 700,000 spectators and viewed on television by millions. A total of 37 students will be participating in the parade, marking the first time Colton Joint Unified School District musicians have been part of the global event. More than 8,000 entertainers take part in the parade. Bloomington High School earned the spot after Band Director Victor Torres sent in an audition video. Lord Mayor Duncan

Sandys from Westminster and parade founder Bob Bone personally made a trip to Bloomington in October of 2018 to formally invite the band. The group will be in London Dec. 29-Jan. 4. They will perform in the parade on New Year’s Day and will give a concert in St. John’s, Smith Square on Dec. 30. The group, who will be traveling together, has a full itinerary including performances, practices and plenty of sightseeing opportunities. Torres hopes the experience will be something the students will remember for a lifetime. None of those going have been to Europe before.

“There’s a lot of stuff they’re going to be exposed to,” he said. “They’ve seen Westminster Abbey in a book, but they’re going to be standing in front of it. I want them to see that the world is bigger than they think.” Lesley Nuñez, former drum major and 2019 BHS graduate will be joining the group as a saxophonist. A huge Harry Potter fan, Lesley said she is most excited to go on a Harry Potter tour in London. The parade, she said, is exciting, but “little nerve wracking” since it will be seen by so many people and broadcast live on television. The performance is the most exciting part of the trip for BHS sen-

So, it was with December 25th. It was the birthdate of Mithra, the god of Mithraism. It became the birthdate of Jesus.

The birth of Jesus was not celebrated by Christians until hundreds of years after His birth. Pope Julian was the first to use the

Matthew and Luke state that at the time of Jesus’ birth, Mary, His mother was a virgin. Strange as it may seem, this uniqueness was rather common in ancient times. For example: Zoroaster, Mithra, Perseus, Horus and Krishna were all alleged to have been born of a virgin. It was as a sign of purity. Helena, the mother of Constantine, arbitrarily established the location of Christian sites in the Holy Land. For example, the location in Bethlehem as the birthplace of Jesus. I’ve been there. The Cathedral is entered through a small door. At the back of the Chancel is a stairway descending about 20 feet. At the bottom is an ornate altar and a silver star with a one foot hole in the middle. Looking into the hole there is a light about twelve feet below. That is the place where Jesus was born. So it is believed. Did you know that the Wisemen never came to the manger? The Gospel of Matthew states they came “to a house.” Tradition says there were three magi. Only because three gifts are mentioned: gold, frankincense and myrrh.

them that at the singing of the Hallelujah Chorus, the king stood and the entire audience did the same. To my complete surprise the audience to whom I shared the chorus, AROSE as I repeated the words to the Hallelujah Chorus. This practice continues to this day.

Again, tradition says they were named: Balthazar (the oldest), Melchior (middle-age), and Caspar (a young man). Consider the time of the yearDecember. I’ve been to Jerusalem and Bethlehem in December. It was rainy, snowing and cold. It is comparable to our mountains in December. Hardly the time of year for sheep on a hillside. There are huge limestone caves in the area that shelter the animals. The time of the manger story is most likely to have occurred in the Spring of the year. A few years ago a Southern California University had a Christmas display on campus. Several sidewalks were lined with giant Christmas cards-designed by students in the Art Department. The winning exhibit was a card with Santa Claus hanging on a cross. It symbolized the commercialism of Christmas. Where does God fit into this crass secularism? It’s time to wake up to the realities of Christmas. Guizot was a great French painter. One of his remarkable paintings depicts the shepherd scene. The lower left shows several shepherds gazing up into the sky. Dimly portrayedin the upper right- are several angels, singing. It is so real one can

almost hear them. “Glory to God and peace on earth.” BUT, surrounding the shepherds, fast asleep, are several sheep dogs. They don’t see or hear the angels. The depiction should be obvious. Emmanuel is the real message. “God with (in) us. A few years ago I was Protestant Chaplain on the Ship Hope in Tunis, Tunisia. Upon arriving there I was asked to preach each week at the Anglican Church-the only Christian Church in Tunisia. Their priest had become ill and went back to England. On Christmas Eve I participated in three services: at the church, on the ship and with the Catholic priest at the Midnight Mass. I ended my sermon at the Anglican Church by telling the story of Handel’s great oratorio, The Messiah. Written in 21 days, it was sung for the first time in 1741. The British king, George II was present at the presentation. I reminded

My favorite Christmas story involves a nine-year-old freckled faced boy, a red wagon and the baby Jesus. A Methodist Church had a manger replica on the front lawn. Wisemen, shepherds, Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus. Christmas fell on a Sunday. As the pastor came early, he noticed that the baby Jesus was absent. Someone must have stolen it. A few members came early also. Who had stolen the Christ child? Suddenly the nine-year-old kid, pulling a red wagon strolled up with the Christ Child in the wagon. When asked why he had the Baby, his answer solved the problem. “I promised the Baby Jesus that if I got a red wagon for Christmas that I would take Him for a ride in it.” Finally, Stella and I wish all who read this article a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful and prosperous 2020. May God’s Best Be Yours, Always. Amen. Selah. So be it.

Car clubs suppor t 3rd Annual Toy Drive & Car Show at Loma Linda Ronald McDonald House By Ricardo Tomboc

O

n Saturday December 14, the Third Annual Toy Drive & Car Show was held at the Ronald McDonald House in Loma Linda. The event was promoted by RZ Entertainment and the Suavesitos Car Club. Despite the rainy weather, several spectators and participants from various car clubs came for the event. Although there were many entries into the various car show categories, the big winner was Ronald McDonald House, who was the recipient of the Toy Drive. Car show participants came from all around the Southern California area. Bobbie (Burgie) Baeza from Covina is a member of the Abrayas Car Club and won the

First-Place trophy for his Golden Thunderbird. Johnny Liendo from Colton won the SecondPlace trophy for his Red 1965 Chevy S-10 Pickup Truck. Johnny, a member of the “Bajitos” Car Club, said, “I like to participate and contribute to the Ronald McDonald Charities when I can.” Several vendors took part in the festivities, including LifeStream who held a mobile blood drive onsite.

Ronald McDonald Houses are found in over 64 countries. Local chapters have been helping millions of families with sick children find comfort and support when they need it most. The programs are tailored to meet the urgent needs of each community. Promise Eaves, 17, from Orange County performed several songs during the car show. Promise has

been battling cancer since she was 18 months old and has been in and out of hospitals most of her life. Promise’s mother Ila Eaves has been a guest of the Ronald McDonald House, not only in Loma Linda, but in the Orange County area as well.

The Loma Linda House has the capability to accommodate up to 54 families and is located across from Loma Linda Children’s Hospital. Families can stay at the Ronald McDonald House for little to no cost. The Ronald McDonald House is in need of financial support, volunteers, supplies, including food items and beverages, and sponsors willing to adopt a room or rooms for families in need. For more information, contact the Ronald McDonald House at 909-747-1200; or go to rmhcsc.org/inlandempire.

We have learned that we must mobilize ourselves to cater to the needs of our community and understand their culture and language especially when it involves them asking for help whether it’s on mental health or housing, we know who to refer them to,” said Esperanza Project Founder Connie Rosales. “The

simple fact that they are starting to ask for help is already a win and learning of other organizations of what they do, and offer is important to us to support them and share it to the community. We are stronger as a community when we support and collaborate with other organizations.” The Esperanza Project is a nonprofit organization and its mission is to do wellness art sessions with children and youth to heal hearts, and present charity events such as this one.
