“I feel proud,” Hernandez, a third-grade student at Dunn Elementary School in the Rialto Unified School District, responded. “I feel like not giving up. I feel like I’m going to be a smart kid!” Of course, he is! Hernandez’s three books — “Animal helpers,” “Denzel and his cleats,” and “My favorite holiday” — are proof that he is already a super smart and very creative student.

The event was well attended, and a lot of community

support was present for the little leaguers. The Bloomington Little League members had a blast seeing baseball legends Ron Cey and Steve Yeager attend the event. The Dodger Alumni gave the children an inspirational speech. These 1981 World Series Champions’ presence at the opening was very

special to the Little League. Some of the lucky players left the event with autographed baseballs and Andrew cation program that provides high-quality literacy content and tools for students. The company’s “Create-a-Book” feature allows students, like Hernandez, the ability to write, edit, print, and email books using words and artwork from books they have read. With the feature, Hernandez was able to merge words and pictures to generate fully formed stories. As an example, in his story “Animal helpers,” Hernandez writes about dogs helping people paired with pictures of man’s best friend. In the story, Hernandez wrote: “When people feel sad a dog can be a good friend and companion. A dog can be a good friend to humans.”

Simple as that! Hernandez is excelling as a third-grade student in Michele Horner’s class at Dunn Elementary School. Horner said she wasn’t surprised to see her student flourish as an author. He displays that type of creativity regularly in class. “Andrew is an exceptional student in many ways, but his love for learning, his wide range of interests, and his love for reading and writing make him extraordinary,” Horner stated. “Andrew decided to start creating books on Footsteps2Brilliance because he loves reading and enjoys using the online tools. He loves to see what sort of things you can add to the backgrounds to make his own stories great. He is a creative young man and crafting these books allows him the chance to use his creativity, be artistic, and learn all at the same time.” His teacher is not the only one to recognize his accomplishment. Footsteps2Brilliance provided a certificate of recognition from “Detective Sherlock Mouse,” the

Dunn Elementary School Principal Mario Caranza praised both Hernandez and Horner for their awesome work. “Ms. Horner is an inspiring and dedicated teacher with some exceptionally creative students like Andrew!” Caranza said. “I appreciate her support of Andrew and her endeavors to make Dunn Elementary a place of opportunity and academic success. It is a pleasure working with Ms. Horner and watching her motivate and influence students on a daily basis.” While Andrew has plans for more books in the near future, he doesn’t think he’ll remain an author forever. Andrew wants to become a police detective. “I want to be a police detective because I love solving mysteries and trying to figure things out,” Hernandez said. “I think that would be a fantastic job because I can help people, solve crimes, and protect people from other bad people.”

he Inland Empire Job Corps campus has immediate availability to safely house, feed, and educate qualified applicants and place them directly into employment in our community. At the Inland Empire Job Corps Center, they have the capacity to serve 340 students aged 16-24 in areas such as Construction, Health Care, Hospitality, Finance & Business, and Renewable Resources and Energy. In addition, the campus works directly with local and national employers to help them fill in-demand and well-paying positions. This in-

cludes Southwest Carpenter and Affiliated Trades/Carpenters Local 909, Career Strategies, and San Manuel Band Of Mission Indians Casino. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 Pandemic significantly reduced the number of students the Inland Empire has served over the past year and a half. But with effective vaccines and continued safety precautions, the campus is now ready to resume full operation. “We are incredibly excited that our campus has reopened our training opportunities and we are eager to bring in deserving young

people and help them start their careers,” stated Suzanne Schaeffer the Center Director for the Inland Empire Job Corps campus. “With a long track record of successfully placing our graduates into meaningful careers in the Inland Empire, we want our community to know that Job Corps is a terrific first option for any interested young person.” The Inland Empire Job Corps campus has already demonstrated they are able to house and serve students safely and effectively despite COVID. The program has protocols and policies in place to track COVID symptoms, test, and

T

he Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship (IECE) at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) has published the 2021 Impact Report and the data shows that the IECE continues to have a growing and impactful economic presence in the region. Among the findings is that in 2021, the IECE had a total net positive economic contribution of slightly more than $70 million when the total loans, contracts and exports are combined. “That's the direct economic impact, that doesn't account for any multiplier effects.” said Mike Stull, Director

of IECE. IECE was also responsible for the creation and retention of approximately 17,000 jobs in 2021. The jobs are representative of a variety of industries including hospitality, logistics, tech, construction and retail services. Another category of jobs is for the entrepreneurs themselves who become self-employed after launching their ventures. “Due to the pandemic a great deal of focus in last years impact to the economy was in assisting companies in keeping employees on the payroll. We did a lot of

work to keep people employed and to keep their employees inhouse. And so that's reflected in that number as well,” said Paul Nolta, Manager of the IECE Small Business Development Center. The report also details that IECE held more than a thousand training and networking events last year with more than 17,000 attendees. Women-owned and minority-owned businesses were also heavily featured in the IECE training and assistance programs with more than 2,000 and 2,500 businesses facilitated respectively.

This time has also shown us that Job Corps dedication to teaching trades to young people has made a big difference not only in the lives of our students and their families, but in the lives of Americans reliant upon the work Job Corps alumni have

been trained to do,” said Byron V. Garrett, CEO and President of National Job Corps Association. “Given our availability to immediately serve students, we know the potential for our campuses to transform lives and want everyone to know that Job Corps is reopened and ready to help.”

CSUSB establishes Elder/Culture Bearer In-Residence position to help Native American students cess and educational equity in the division of Student Affairs. Robert Levi Jr., a citizen of the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians and a retired AP/CP U.S. History teacher at Upland High School, who in his 38 years of teaching includes teaching at Sherman Indian High School and Riverside’s Notre Dame High School, has been named the inaugural Elder/Culture Bearer InResidence, Springer said. C

al State San Bernardino has created a new position – the Elder/Culture Bearer In-Residence – designed to serve as a mentor to Native American students and serve as special consultant for the college on matters of importance for tribes in the region. Along with mentorship, the Elder/Culture Bearer In-Residence will benefit CSUSB students in a number of ways that include expertise from Inland Empire tribal elders as well as opportunities to enhance and develop positive cultural identities, said Molly Springer, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation/Osage and associate vice president, student suc-

Levi said the Elder/Culture Bearer In-Residence is very important because Indian students need to know there is somebody available for them and to help them feel a sense of belonging. “You have the idea of family, and how are you going to fit that in terms of a university?” Levi said. “Sometimes you’re devoid of each other. American Indian students are islands within the university and there’s usually nothing to bring you together. “So hopefully that’s what this Elder/Culture Bearer In-Residence will help them do: Help the students find a place where they can come and just talk ‘Indian,’ talk about what’s happening on the rez. What happened with your aunties and your uncles? Tell a couple of wry Indian jokes. Make fried bread,” he said. Springer said Levi’s experience

in working with students and the Native community will also help the university. “Recently, Mr. Levi served as a mentor for Cal State Northridge’s Ethnic Studies Education Pathways Project, and this is an area that CSUSB is interested in supporting,” Springer said. “Mr. Levi’s connectivity to the desert communities will allow CSUSB to better engage and partner with tribal communities in that area, and also allow the PDC campus to extend its reach with Native communities.” Springer added that it is through this effort that the university hopes to offer CSUSB students the richness and education of tribal Elders within the Inland Empire, build fruitful and reciprocal relationships with Tribes, and work in partnership with tribally/Native/Indigenous focused organizations within the Inland Empire, Springer said. Culturally, the Levi family holds strong convictions to Desert Cahuilla traditions. His father, Robert J. Levi Sr., along with three other Cahuilla elders have preserved and taught Cahuilla Bird Songs. These social songs have revitalized not only the Cahuilla culture but that of other tribes throughout the Southern California, Arizona and Nevada regions.

Along with the sense of belonging, Levi said he also hopes to encourage more Indian high school students to consider higher education because of the small number of American Indian students in colleges and universities, especially those seeking to become teachers. “Being the past chair for the American Indian Alaska native caucus for the California Teachers Association, we find that there is only 2 percent of teachers in California who are American Indian. So, there’s a void that needs to be filled,” Levi said. “So basically, coming here I hope to include more American Indian students to come to campus and become teachers, because who best to tell our stories except for us?” He added there is also “a need for more outreach, especially in the Coachella Valley. And with our satellite campus out in Palm Desert and with the California Nations College out there, we hope to fill that gap, fill that void and also help the other universities the (University of) Redlands and UCR,” Levi said. “We hope to get more and more involvement of American Indian students within the higher education.” The idea for the Elder/Culture Bearer In-Residence came after a discussion with Native American students, staff and faculty, and was brought to life by the divisions of Student Affairs and Advancement, and the President’s Office, said Springer. CSUSB has had distinguished Native Elders in the faculty, including Ernest Siva, a respected elder and tribal member for the

Morongo Band who has been an instructor of Serrano Cahuilla/Serrano language in the world languages and literatures department, and Hannah Kivalahula-Uddin, a tribal citizen and respected elder of the Puyallup tribe in Washington, who is an assistant professor of educational leadership and technology in the College of Education, Springer said. But college staff thought it was important to create a position to specifically serve as a special consultant for the college on matters of importance for tribes in the region, Springer said. The Elder can also help the university in working with the Native American community on how CSUSB can align itself with the needs of the community and be aware of the things that we could be doing better, Springer said. “Our Elder/Culture Bearer InResidence will be sitting on a variety of committees to support the work our campus is already invested in with regards to Native/Indigenous peoples,” Springer said. “The Elder/Culture Bearer In-Residence will support our thinking in what other initiates and partnerships must be created to grow in awareness and understanding of the needs of the regional tribal communities and urban Native communities.” The position is not a new one to the California State University system. Cal Poly Pomona created a similar position in 2015 with the appointment of Lorene Sisquoc, a citizen of the Mountain Cahuilla/Apache, to serve as its very first Native American elder/scholar-in-residence.

Annual STEMapalooza provides Inland Empire students with STEM experience

A

n estimated 15,000 students representing more than 35 districts in both San Bernardino and Riverside Counties are expected to participate in the 10th annual STEMapalooza event, hosted virtually by San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS) Alliance for Education. “Our students are the Inland Empire’s greatest asset,” said San Bernardino County Superintendent Ted Alejandre. “Opportunities like STEMapalooza help spur their interests and prepare them for the careers that will be available in their future. Our region’s

economic vitality relies on having a highly skilled workforce and events like these further that goal.” STEMapalooza is an annual event which provides students with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning experiences. The event exposes them to STEM-related careers, the essential skills those careers require and the pathways that lead to them. From Feb. 22-25, fourth to eighth-grade students explored content released daily in a virtual learning environment with a retro

multiplex theme. Students practiced hands-on and virtual STEM skills in the Activity Arcade, listened to keynote speakers on the “Just Say’n” stage and watched videos and 360-degree industry tours at the SBCinema4. Many STEM industries were represented, including arts, media and entertainment; building and construction trades; engineering and architecture; energy, environment and utilities; health science and medical technology; hospitality, tourism and recreation; manuand welding; facturing information and communications

lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 090537-CA. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction.
