PRESIDENT’S report / 2024

PRESIDENT & CEO BRUCE PAISNER

The year 2024 saw the International Academy begin to achieve many of its long-term goals. Membership grew to over 1,000 people, with worldwide diversity. Sponsorships grew too with the addition of Dubai Studios, which is a unit of Dubai Media Company, and Amazon MGM Studios. Long time sponsors continue to support and enhance the Academy, with important contributions from Globo (Brazil), Ay Yapim (Türkiye), and JCS International (USA), among others. Globo will sponsor our signature Academy event, International Academy Day in Rio de Janeiro in April, and Dubai Studios will sponsor one in the next couple of years in Dubai. Meanwhile our annual Gala, where we present International Emmys in 14 different categories continues to grow in worldwide entries and attendance. The Gala is the culmination of the World Television Festival, a weekend of screenings, panels and parties, which displays all the nominated programs and brings together TV professionals from all over the world. The presentation of two special awards also took place at the Gala. The Founders Emmy was presented to producer and writer David E. Kelley, whose TV shows have been seen by millions of viewers over many generations. The Directorate Emmy Award was presented to Sidonie Dumas, who has propelled France’s historic Gaumont organization into an international programing powerhouse.

Our Board and Members Meetings this year included three in-person gatherings and featured various panel discussions on the media landscape. In March, we invited members to join us in New York for our Spring Meeting hosted by ARRI, one of the premiere camera & lighting companies. Our September Meeting took place in Los Angeles, and our November Meeting took

ranging from Buenos Aires to Seoul, and these judgings produced the 56 nominees who competed for International Emmys at the Gala.

Central to the International Academy's successful operations is our devoted team, led by Camille Bidermann, our dedicated Executive Director. This team is reinforced by a talented Executive Committee comprised of seasoned Television industry professionals. I express my sincere gratitude to its members: Fred Cohen (Chairman), Bruce Tuchman (Secretary), Kevin Beggs (Treasurer), Piv Bernth (Emmy® Committee Chair), Adina Pitt (Nominating Committee Chair), Armando Nuñez Jr, Jean-Briac Perrette, and Abbe Raven.

My appreciation goes out to my colleagues at Hearst, whose unwavering support has been critical to my work with the International Academy. I am particularly grateful to Steven R. Swartz, Hearst's President & CEO, along with his predecessor, Frank A. Bennack Jr., Executive Vice Chairman & Former CEO of Hearst. Steve's continuous support and wise counsel have been immeasurable, while Frank, who brought me into Hearst many years ago, has been an enduring source of

I eagerly look ahead at an exciting 2025, which will kick off with Academy Day in Rio de Janeiro hosted by Globo. This high-level event will take place in April and will incorporate our Spring Board & Members Meeting, some great panel discussions, sightseeing activities, and more. We are thankful to Amauri Soares and the Marinho family, who are celebrating the 60th anniversary of Globo television.

Lastly, I extend heartfelt thanks to our Academy Directors and Members whose dedication and enthusiasm have been instrumental in fortifying the International Academy's mission and impact. These are uncertain times, with challenges and threats, but opportunity too. Like everyone else, the Academy will be affected by these things, but we will navigate through them and be stronger for it.

The 52nd International Emmy® Awards took place on Monday, November 25 at the Hilton Hotel in New York City. Sixteen Emmy statues, including two Special Awards were presented by the International Academy during the evening. International Academy during the evening.

Where are you going to keep your Emmy®?

First of all, I am incredibly happy that both I and the Emmy® crossed the border without any issues. Some might see it as a heavy, blunt object with sharp, pointy edges-- perhaps even something you could imagine being used to stab. But seriously, it will be placed in a cabinet in my wife’s editing room in our apartment. Whenever I’m feeling down, I can visit it to recharge my spirits.

Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

This award represents the culmination of a fruitful and beautiful two-year journey for our team, starting with the premiere of Pianoforte at Sundance. I couldn’t imagine a better final note/chord to end this road.

Personally, it’s the greatest achievement of my career. As I’ve been told since the announcement, it also comes with a sense of responsibility—one I am ready to embrace.

What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next?

I’m working in both fiction and documentaries and hope to continue this rotation. Right now, together with Maciej Kubicki, the producer of Pianoforte, we are considering a documentary series about the upcoming 2025 Chopin Competition. On the fiction side: I’m finishing the postproduction of a series and developing a dramedy script.

Where are you going to keep your Emmy®?

I’m still flushed with pride, so presently it sits on its own dedicated small table in the lounge of our flat.

My wife Shane utilised a concertina style fabric lamp that sits in front and enhances its art deco feel to atmospheric effect. Eventually it will be placed in a more discreet and less demonstrably self satisfied location. Not just yet though as it fits in too well with the Christmas decorations !

Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

The Emmy® is a world famous iconic award, to have a received one is a great honour , I’m pretty over the moon actually. It is an Award but it is also an emblem and celebration of the continuing power and significance of

entertainment and storytelling delivered into people’s intimate surroundings through the medium of television. It’s very satisfying that almost a century since its invention people still get such pleasure from it.

What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next?

I’m due to start work on a film in February with some very talented women. It’s going to be shot in the London area. it’s a family story and the director is a brilliant actress , who is also in it. All a bit vague I’m afraid , but it’s currently under wraps. Very much looking forward to it though.

Where are you going to keep your Emmy®?

I keep my Emmy® in the center of my dining room table; it radiates so much positive energy. When my loved ones visit, they often pick it up and admire it. To me, it's a reminder of their constant support and encouragement. I want everyone who visits to experience that same feeling.

Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

Winning the Emmy® was a truly surprising experience. Every nominee was incredibly talented and deserving so I felt deeply honored to be chosen. I think it was more than a personal achievement; standing on that stage as an actor representing a Thai

film on Netflix filled me with immense pride. I hope this award inspires other Thai actors to continue pushing boundaries and elevating our craft.

What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next?

I'm currently working on a Chinese project featuring a really challenging character that's pushing my acting abilities and allowing for significant artistic growth. Looking ahead, I'm eager to explore roles in romantic comedies. I've often been cast in more intense, dramatic roles, and I'm excited by the prospect of showcasing a different side of my acting range through lighter, more romantic work.

Where are you going to keep your Emmy®?

At my workplace, though I think it might add some pressure when I'm writing the next project.

Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

The best recognition was that people liked the show, also being offered to make a second season. But in some way, it feels like the end of a journey—from the day we started working on the project to reaching the highest award one could aspire to. It was the first time I got emotional receiving one. We always try to think that awards aren’t the most important thing, but it sure feels great to win them, haha.

What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next?

We’re editing the next season of División Palermo, and my most immediate project is to take a long and well-deserved vacation once everything is finished. After that, it will be time to start writing again—movies and series—with the Emmy® nearby to look at it from time to time.

We're going to keep the Emmy® in our office kitchen, on a shelf next to a few other awards we've been lucky enough to win for this and other projects. That way everyone who works for Story Films can see it when they make a cup of tea.

Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

It's totally overwhelming and brilliant to win an Emmy® in every way. This documentary was a true passion project, and was the joy of our lives to make, to win an Emmy® is an amazing end to our journey.

What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next?

My day job as the Creative Director of Story Films means that I'm lucky enough to work on most of the projects that we make in some capacity. At the moment I'm executive producing documentaries for Netflix, Amazon, Channel 4 and the BBC in the UK. But most importantly I'm working with Otto, Bruce and Daisy to develop Otto's next project Satan Claus, a Christmas-comedy-horror feature film.

Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

It is such an honor to have a show like this resonante with audiences globally. It is a multi-cultural show shot in three different languages. I’m so proud of the recognition this show has received.

What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next?

We are currently in production of Drops of God Season 2. I’m also excited about another project in development that takes place in the world of art heists and forgeries. It invites audiences into the world of art just as Drops of God introduced them to the world of wine.

What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next?

We are about to premiere Tiddler on BBC1 this Christmas, and are currently in production on a beautiful new special for Christmas 2025. We’re also producing a wonderful preschool comedy adventure series for CBBC and ZDF which will premiere in 2026.

This project was incubated, developed, and produced in Mexico by a lot of collaborators that came together to assemble an incredible team. That’s why we’ve decided to keep it in our Warner Bros. Discovery Offices in Mexico City so it can serve as an inspiration for other teams and projects.

Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

Winning an Emmy® is the ultimate validation of the work that the whole team and the animation industry has been doing in the most recent years in Latin America. Being able to compete, and in this case, to win in the international arena, brings us an extra dose of motivation to keep going and telling stories that resonate with our audiences.

What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next?

We’re very excited about very diverse projects across Latin America, from a stopmotion feature film such as “Frankelda and the Book of Spooks” and the second season of our pre-school original “Cuquin” in Mexico, to our continuous bet in Brazil with “Jorel’s Brother” fifth season and the expansion of our relationship with “Sociedade da Virtude” and “Mauricio de Souza” among other very exciting stuff.

Where are you going to keep your Emmy®?

In my living room I have an antique wooden shelf I inherited from my late grandfather. When I was 19 right before he passed he gifted me a generous amount of money to go to a 5-month film making course for beginners. I find it fitting that the Emmy® will find its home on that shelf.

Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

The story is a love letter to queer coming of age, and for that to resonate with people across country borders means that queer stories have importance in film and TV and can be watched by everyone. The honor of this award is as much mine as it is every person who worked on this series. Each and every person made it what it is.

What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next?

In Denmark we have a strong tradition of young adult fiction and I would love to make more of that. I hope to be able to continue to create drama series that can be moving and poetic… But truthfully the theater kid in me also secretly dreams of one day creating a musical series!

So happy and such an honor. Winning this International Emmy® represents the culmination of a long and meaningful journey—one shaped by following my heart, staying true to my beliefs, and holding onto integrity and motivation, even when the road was difficult. It hasn't always been easy. But through it all, I've remained focused on what truly matters, learning every day, and

having lots of fun too. It feels like reaching the top of a very tall mountain, but now going down, life keeps going and thinking about what mountain to climb next.

What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next?

Similar projects to keep telling stories that matter about human rights, social issues, unreported stories, and try to bring understanding and empathy to this world, that is more necessary than ever. Hopefully with more resources and a proper budget!

The team decided the original should go to Keanu Reeves. Not only did he put in a stellar effort as host of the series, travelling all over the world and conducting scores of interviews, but he had to be in Europe over the awards weekend and missed all the fun. So hopefully he’ll find a prominent spot for it at his home in Los Angeles.

Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

North One has been fortunate to have won a few significant awards over the years, but this one is very special. It is international recognition for a job well done and the competition this year has been fierce. The three other nominees were outstanding shows, so to come out on top feels like a

genuine achievement and reinforces the company’s global position as a producer of high quality sport and factual programming.

What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next?

There’s so much going on at the moment. We have a new true crime series for Paramount, called The Body, which is due to launch soon; we start production in February for the new MotoGP season for TNT and Max, in the UK and US; and there’s the small matter of the Super Bowl for ITV! We’re also talking to Disney about a follow up to Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story –so watch this space!

Well, the Emmy® will now be on the set where we make the series for a few months so that the more than 180 people who work on it can take a photo and enjoy the award.

Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

Well, Spain is a country that has won it on very few occasions and the truth is that the impact it has had in the Spanish media has been very great. Another thing I value most about winning the Emmy® is that it has been an injection of energy for the entire team of the series. And then there is also the recognition of the profession, of the colleagues who have been very happy about this award for Bambú Producciones.

Definitely, winning an Emmy® is one of the most important moments of my twenty years of professional career.

What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next?

Well, we recently premiered Valle Salvaje for Spanish public television (RTVE) and for Netflix and the sensations are very good because the series is in the Top 10 in the world of the most watched series, and that makes us very happy. Also shortly will be the premiere of La Favorita 1922, a series about five women who open a haute cuisine restaurant in Madrid. And of course continue with The Promise because we have many stories yet to tell. In short, these coming months are the time to reap the fruits of hard work in 2024.

Winning an Emmy® for this story is especially important. The civil war in Myanmar is an underreported conflict, and the Emmy® win means that for a moment the country and its people are in the spotlight, which is much needed. The amount of emails and messages we have received from people inside Myanmar thanking us for telling their story has been overwhelming.

We really want to go back to Myanmar, specifically to the Last Hospital, to see how they are coping as the war goes on, so we plan to do that. We will also continue to report on the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine which are at critical junctures. The stories of migrants in Mexico and across Latin America is another focus for us, as is the continuing crisis in Haiti.

During the Summer, the Semi-Final Round of Judging for the 2024 International Emmy® Awards competition took place around the world.

From June to September, 34 member companies hosted Jury panels. Our Hosts spanned 20 countries:Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Greece, Germany, India, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.

The Sir Peter Ustinov Television Scriptwriting Award is designed to motivate novice writers worldwide, and offer them the recognition and encouragement that might lead to a successful career in television scriptwriting. 2024 SIR PETER USTINOV TELEVISION SCRIPTWRITING AWARD WINNER FOR "EACH OTHER'S KEEPERS"

Born and raised in Paris, Ornella is a screenwriter and playwright who specializes in character-driven stories. She explores the themes of identity, religion, morality, family dynamics, gender roles, sex and love. Her favorite thing to do is to travel the world, meet locals and listen to their stories. This often is the source of her writing. Ornella also draws inspiration from her own experiences like growing up in the Jewish community of Paris or playing highly competitive sports. Her play What Comes After Sorrow received an Honor Award in the Writer’s Digest and was published as part of an anthology of plays at Barnes & Noble. The book was launched in New York City’s iconic Drama Book Shop and was mentioned in Broadway World. Ornella is a proud member of the Dramatist Guild of America
