Project Brief: Floating Theatre in Sydney Harbour Location: Sydney, Australia Type: Public & Entertainment Space

I have made a sculpture … you will never be finished with it – when you pass around it or see it against the sky… something new goes on all the time… together with the sun, the light and the clouds, it makes a living thing.

Fort Denison has an evolving history the same as Sydney itself. Originally part of aboriginal land, the area was taken over by British settlers in 1788. Then built into a prison barrack that did not get any use, it was then changed to a defense fort. It was stacked with cannons, stone walls and lookout tower but was never used for battle. It now is a historically preserved site with artifacts and tours.

Jorn Utzon’s Design Principles Derived from quotes when he described the process of designing the initial opera house for his competition entry. Encourage fluidity of people’s movement Design with circulation as a main factor so people can explore this space and not walk to a dead end.

Common geometric denominator Having a specific geometric language assists in the overall aesthetic while also remaining coherent.

Simple living geometric forms With a sculptural exterior, the interior should be very simple in contrast so the interior is understood.

Inspire and Enable Creativity Allowing the users of the creative space the capacity to utilize the interior to assist in their outcome.

Performance Space Variety Different productions, events, or even classes can be included in this space and viewers get the opportunity to experience this space in different performance types.

Scale Space to function Exclude Noise and Reflect Sounds A key factor in theatre performance is the acoustics. Preventing outside sounds and reflecting the performance inwards are very important elements in a successful theatre.

Understanding the layout of the building by the scale the user is observing. The layout should be understood from a simple tour of the building.

With a famous neighbour like the Opera House, there was an opportunity for a relationship such as creating a derivation. First was taking these geometric principles and applying them with the parametric abilities available today...

Especially in a post Covid-19 world, there has never been a greater need for the human interactive experience of live theatre. No more isolated screen time, it’s time for the show!

The true beauty of this structure is the independence from the interior structure. Like the Sydney Opera House, the shell is its own structure not relying on interior walls. Therefore any interior renovations would not threaten the structural integrity of the entire form.

48

The Lily Pad Theatre

Building off of Architect Toyo Ito’s structural innovations with his Opera House in Taiwan, the main structure used is interlocking reinforcement steel bar cages and steel trusses.

Toyo Ito Structural Diagram

The building’s form is made up from the steel frame components covered in a layer of unifying sprayed concrete known as shotcrete.
