Star Entertainment Could Lose Sydney Casino License
Star Entertainment has been operating two casinos in Sydney, which have been lucrative ventures for the company. However, recent concerns about cultural failures have raised eyebrows within the regulatory authorities. These concerns have prompted an independent inquiry to assess the situation and determine whether Star Entertainment has indeed violated any regulations.
To conduct the independent inquiry, Adam Bell, SC, a Sydney barrister who previously investigated Star Entertainment’s Sydney casino, has been appointed as the reviewer. This decision has surprised the company’s executives, as they were not expecting Bell’s involvement. The appointment of Bell indicates the seriousness of the matter and the determination of the NSW regulator to get to the root of the alleged cultural failures.
The cultural failures in question have not been explicitly defined. However, it is clear that they are significant enough to warrant a thorough investigation. These failures could range from issues of corporate governance to ethical practices within the organization. The independent inquiry aims to uncover the extent of these failures and hold Star Entertainment accountable for any wrongdoing.
The potential consequences for Star Entertainment are significant. If the independent inquiry finds evidence of major cultural failures, the company could face severe penalties, including the revocation of its casino license. Losing the license would be a substantial blow to Star Entertainment, as it would not only impact its revenue but also its reputation in the industry.
The inquiry into Star Entertainment’s
cultural failures could have broader implications for the gambling industry as a whole. It serves as a reminder that regulatory authorities are committed to upholding high standards of conduct and will not hesitate to take action against any operator found to be in violation. This inquiry may prompt other casino operators to reassess their own practices and ensure compliance with regulations.
The news of the independent inquiry has sent shockwaves through the gambling industry, with stakeholders closely monitoring the situation. Other casino operators are likely to use this opportunity to examine their own operations and ensure they are not susceptible to similar allegations. The outcome of the inquiry will shape the industry’s future and set a precedent for how cultural failures are addressed.

ated in the heart of Berlin, the vibrant office is home to a talented team of around 80 professionals.
The game portfolio shines with a rich blend of classic titles like Ramses Book, Crystal Ball and Fancy Fruits and engaging series such as the captivating Fire Series and the fantastic Deluxe Series. This mix of traditional and cuttingedge games has captivated players spanning over 35 countries. As a B2B provider, GAMOMAT focuses on delivering unique and high-quality gaming experiences, continually raising the bar in online gaming.
Q: Could you take us through the origins of GAMOMAT and share what inspired its launch?
Dietmar: Of course, I’d love to. It all began over fifteen years ago, when we
42 INFINITY GAMING
Dietmar Hermjohannes Founder & Managing Director of GAMOMAT
set off on an exciting journey to create GAMOMAT, driven by two fundamental passions: a deep love for gaming, as I am an avid gamer myself, and a real interest in people. For us it was vital from the outset, it was essential to form a workplace where equality and flat hierarchies thrive, guided by our philosophy: ‘Ideas, that work’. This empowers our entire operation.
Our humble beginnings in 2008 saw a dedicated team of just three. Our inaugural collaboration was with Bally Wulff, making land-based games. This initial success paved the way for our digital evolution. In 2015, we followed the decision to expand into the online space, collaborating with BRAGG a move that proved to be a pivotal learning curve. Our portfolio has since gone from strength-to-strength with a plethora of successful launches, most
recently with the highly acclaimed Book of Elements.
Since 2019, our focus has been solely on the international online market, an area where our product line continues to thrive.
Q: How does your corporate culture act as a catalyst for progress?
Alex: That’s a great question and one that requires some consideration. Our brand goes beyond innovative games; it’s firmly rooted in its unique corporate culture, which stands as a testament to its excellent leadership and progressive management philosophy. The company’s positive growth trajectory is constant and dynamic, anchored by a culture that is both unique and adaptive.
This philosophy translates into an environment where innovation is actively encouraged, collaboration is key, and employee well-being is prioritised. A dedication from the entire team to preservea unique culture while continuously evolving reflects the dynamic nature of the gaming industry itself.
In 2023 we had a true moment of fulfillment when we were voted again among the “Best Employers BerlinBrandenburg” and “Best Employers in ITC” in Germany from Great Place to Work®. This award was complemented when we were named as one of Germany’s top employers. Out of more than 900 participating companies of all sizes and sectors, we made it into the top 100 and achieved an outstanding 13th ranking.

Q: In what areas has GAMOMAT made the biggest iGaming impact?
Dietmar: Let me have a think as there has been plenty to choose from. I’m certain a big part of the company’s consistent advancement is a result of relentless innovation, appropriate reactions to industry dynamics, and a strategic approach to holding a competitive edge. At the heart of the company’s success lies its forward-thinking and adaptable nature, which has been crucial in navigating the challenges of the gaming industry. We recognise that player preferences and regulatory requirements vary considerably across regions. GAMOMAT has therefore invested in regional market researchand the creation of localised games for every market we operate.
Our studio has not only transformed the beautiful graphics of the landbased games for the online world , but also knowing how to use this knowledge for further game development, using progressive technology to provide an immersive visual experience. Sound is a critical component, and I’m incredibly proud of what the team has produced in terms of soundtracks that add depth to the gaming experience. Simplicity and intuitiveness in gameplay are vital, so our people work tirelessly to ensure that the games are accessible and enjoyable for all players, regardless of their experience with online gaming. This user-friendly aproach is supported by a commitment to ro-
bust and trustworthy mathematical models, ensuring fairness and balance in all games. Game rules are communicated clearly to players, reinforcing the trust in the gaming market.
Q: Given that employees are central to GAMOMAT’s growth, could you elaborate on how you’ve fostered an inspiring working environment?
Alex: That would be a pleasure. At our company, we embrace a value-driven ethos within a hybrid, adaptable work environment, echoing the principles of an “Ethical Entrepreneur 4.0“. We meticulously craft every phase of the employee journey, from recruitment onward, to align with our five core values: Dream Partner, Empowering Potential, Fire and flames, Quality advocate, and Cognizant idea generators. “Dream Partner“, in particular, shapes our expectation for mature, effective communication. This approach has fostered a team environment recognised for its absence of ego, sensitivity, and office politics, yet remains an environment for healthy debate. The essence of our success lies in our commitment to these values in every aspect of people management. Our deep understanding of the manner that corporate culture plays in our success has led us to integrate our values more deliberately and consistently into all we do.
For us, corporate culture isn’t just a part of our strategy; it’s at the very core of our operations. We wholeheartedly believe in the saying, “culture eats strategy for breakfast“, seeing it come to life every day within our walls. To foster both professional and personal development, we offer flexible, hybrid work models and tailored professional development programs. We’re proud of our GAMOcademy which provides a wide range of diverse training opportunities, giving our team members the resources needed to grow and
thrive. This hard work was recently recognised at the International Gaming Awards where we won the “Great Place to Work (Supplier)Award”. The award celebrates organisations that excel in building a diverse and inclusive employee environment.
Q: As we’re still in the early stages of 2024, what are your expectations or plans for GAMOMAT for the remainder of the year?
Dietmar: I love the early stages of a new year as it offers opportunities galore. One ambition for 2024 is to build on our momentum from last year, and we’ve already made a strong start with the launch of the Book of Elements game. This captivating title sees players join Kiana Bluespyre, a young frost mage, and her ice phoenix, Avala, on an enchanting journey to master the elemental arts. There is also plenty of anticipation around the launch of Crystal Ball Deluxethat is the latest to join the Deluxeseries following Ramses Book Deluxe.
Looking a little further ahead, we’re excited to expand our global footprint, steadfast in our commitment to consolidating our status as one of the premier online gaming providers and an employer of choice. We celebrated our 15th anniversary last year with the launch of the Deluxe series. Throughout this year, we’ll continue to enhance this series, reimagining our most iconic games with state-of-theart graphics. The first to undergo this deluxe treatment were Fancy Fruits Deluxe and Royal Seven XXL Deluxe, which have been reimagined and are now available.
Additionally, we’re passionate about advancing our Gaming for the Climate initiative. Keep an eye out for our upcoming announcement of a fourth environmental project partnership, marking another stride in our continuous commitment to corporate social responsibility.

Macau Revenues Looking Positive During CNY
According to brokerage CLSA Ltd, Macau’s casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) could exceed MOP19.8 billion (US$2.46 billion) for the month, making it the highest monthly tally since early 2020.
Macau’s strong performance during the Chinese New Year holiday period can be attributed to robust visitations and solid foot traffic. Analysts Jeffrey Kiang and Leo Pan from CLSA Ltd noted in a recent report that average visitations from February 10 to 17 were in line with the Macao Government Tourism Office’s forecast of 120,000 visitors per day. Their observations during a visit on February 12 revealed bustling activity at borders and integrated resorts.
Preliminary data from Macau’s Public Security Police showed that more than 898,000 visitors arrived in the city during the first five days of the Chinese New Year break, with an average of about 179,700 arrivals per day. This influx of mainland Chinese tour -
ists has long been a boon for Macau’s gaming industry, and the holiday period serves as a prime opportunity for them to enjoy the city’s entertainment offerings.
CLSA Ltd predicts that Macau’s February GGR could exceed their initial forecast of MOP19.8 billion, which was already 2% higher than January’s figure. The strong performance during the Chinese New Year period has given rise to this upside risk. If confirmed, this achievement would mark a significant milestone in Macau’s recovery from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
During CLSA’s visit to Macau, they observed the popularity of various casino games among visitors. Baccarat, a beloved card game with a minimum bet of MOP1,000 (US$124), was widely played. Additionally, sic bo, known for its higher house edge and a minimum bet of MOP500, attracted many players. Slot machines and live multigame terminals also saw substantial
usage.
The Chinese New Year holiday period is undoubtedly a key driver for Macau’s tourism industry. The city’s allure as a gambling and entertainment destination draws hundreds of thousands of mainland Chinese tourists each year. Macau welcomed over 898,000 visitors during the first five days of the Chinese New Year break, indicating a strong rebound in tourism. This surge in visitor arrivals is a positive sign for the recovery of Macau’s economy and its gaming sector.
The anticipated February GGR in Macau is expected to surpass pre-pandemic levels, signalling a significant milestone for the city’s gaming industry. The Covid-19 pandemic severely impacted Macau’s gambling revenues in early 2020, leading to a prolonged period of low visitor numbers and revenue. However, the strong performance during the Chinese New Year period indicates that Macau is well on its way to recovery.

Thailand Considers Legalizing Gambling
The Thai government has been considering the legalization of gambling casinos as a means to boost state coffers and attract tourism. This move, inspired by the success of Singapore’s integrated resorts, aims to tap into the potential tax revenue that a legal gambling industry could generate. However, experts are urging caution, highlighting the need to carefully consider the social impacts and implement effective regulations to control illegal activities. In this article, we will explore Thailand’s potential gamble on gambling casinos, weighing the benefits and risks associated with this proposition.
The Need for Regulated Gambling
Thailand has long grappled with illegal gambling activities, particularly in its border towns and online platforms. By legalizing gambling, the government hopes to divert funds from illicit operations and into the country’s coffers. Additionally, legalizing casinos could position Thailand as a competitor in the lucrative gambling tourism market, attracting visitors from neighboring countries and beyond.
Learning from Singapore’s Model
To ensure responsible gambling practices and minimize the negative social impacts, experts suggest adopting a model similar to Singapore’s integrated resorts. In Singapore, strict regulations are in place to control local players’ ac -
cess to casinos, such as entry levies and exclusionary orders. By implementing these measures, Thailand can strike a balance between reaping the economic benefits of casinos and safeguarding its citizens from excessive gambling.
Addressing Illegal Gambling
While legalizing casinos may help curb illegal gambling, it is crucial to address existing illicit activities before introducing legal alternatives. Thailand’s border towns, in particular, have become hotspots for illegal gambling dens. To effectively combat this issue, the government must crack down on illegal operations and provide robust regulations for legal gambling venues.
48 INFINITY GAMING
Public Sentiment and Opposition
Public opinion on legalizing gambling remains divided. While some see it as a potential economic boon, others express concerns about the social consequences and the potential for increased addiction. A poll conducted by the previous parliamentary committee on the issue revealed that while over 80% of respondents were open to the idea of entertainment complexes, only 36% supported the inclusion of casinos. This divergence of opinion highlights the need for comprehensive public consultation and education regarding the benefits and risks associated with legal gambling.
The Case for Online Gambling
In addition to physical casinos, there is growing pressure to legalize online gambling in Thailand. The global online gambling market has seen exponential growth, and legalizing online gambling could tap into this lucrative industry. However, concerns about addiction and the potential for illegal activities make this a contentious issue. Authorities must carefully consider the risks and benefits before making any decisions regarding online gambling.
Controlling and Regulating Online Gambling
Countries like China have experienced challenges in regulating online gambling, with calls for stricter control and policies to combat illegal activities. Thailand can learn from these experiences and develop comprehensive regulations to mitigate the risks associated with online gambling. By implementing effective safeguards and providing support for individuals struggling with addiction, Thailand can strike a balance between capitalizing on the online gambling market and protecting its citizens.
Economic Implications and Revenue Generation (PTO)
49 INFINITY GAMING
Thailand Considers Gambling
One of the primary motivations behind legalizing gambling is the potential for significant revenue generation. A previous committee’s report estimated that the opening of entertainment complexes with casinos in each of Thailand’s five main regions could generate billions of dollars in tax revenue annually. This revenue could be further supplemented by allowing other forms of gambling, such as online, sports, and stock exchange betting. By diversifying its revenue streams, Thailand can bolster its economy and fund essential public services.
The Complex Nature of LegislationLegalizing gambling is a complex endeavor that requires careful consideration and planning. The legislative process may take years to complete, as it involves multiple stakeholders and considerations. Balancing the economic benefits with social and ethical concerns is crucial to ensure a sustainable and responsible gambling industry. Thailand must draw upon the experi-
ences of other countries that have embarked on similar journeys and learn from their successes and failures.
Lessons from the Legalization of Cannabis
Thailand’s recent legalization of cannabis provides valuable lessons for the gambling industry. The rapid expansion of the cannabis industry without adequate regulations led to unforeseen challenges and the need for subsequent adjustments. To avoid repeating the same mistakes, Thailand must prioritize comprehensive regulations and effective enforcement from the outset. Learning from past experiences will enable the government to establish a well-controlled and managed gambling industry.
Tourism and Economic Develop
mentProponents of legalizing gambling emphasize the potential for economic development, especially in areas with income disparities. By strategically
locating entertainment complexes in regions in need of economic stimulus, Thailand can drive local economies and improve the livelihoods of its citizens. This approach would not only attract tourists but also create jobs and opportunities for local communities.
The Road Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities
As Thailand considers the legalization of gambling casinos, it faces a complex array of challenges and opportunities. Striking the right balance between economic growth and social responsibility is paramount. The government must ensure that comprehensive regulations are in place to control and monitor the industry effectively. By learning from the experiences of other countries, addressing concerns regarding addiction and social impacts, and implementing robust regulations, Thailand can navigate the path to a sustainable and responsible gambling industry.

Gambling Giants
Exploring the World’s Leading Countries in Gaming
When it comes to the global casino stage, certain countries stand out as flourishing gaming spheres that attract millions of players. These countries not only have physical casinos but also online gambling sites that accept players from different geog -
raphies. In this article, we will delve into the world of gambling giants and explore the leading countries in the gaming industry. We will examine global trends, discuss the strength of the iGaming sector in specific regions, and shed light on how much money people spend on this popular hobby.
So, if you’re curious to find out which country gambles the most, keep reading!
United States: The Gambling Capital
It should come as no surprise that the United States is a major player in the gaming industry. With Las Vegas often referred to as the gambling capital of the world, the country boasts a thriving gambling culture. The constant tech innovations in the field of arcades and online casino games have contributed to the popularity of gambling in the US. Slot machines, in particular, have become more immersive, packed with unique features like bonus rounds, clusters, cascade, and megaways. Additionally, the incredibly high payouts offered by certain games, with jackpots reaching tens of millions of dollars, make gambling even more enticing.
Gambling in the United States appeals
52 INFINITY GAMING
to both casual players and professionals. Casino games like blackjack and poker are played on a professional level, and many individuals make a living out of these hobbies. Furthermore, gambling on the outcome of competitions adds an exciting dimension to the viewing experience. According to the American Gaming Association (AGA), the United States commercial casino industry generated a record $43.6 billion in gaming revenue in 2019 alone. The country is also home to industry giants such as MGM, Caesars, IGT, Light & Wonder, and Las Vegas Sands.
China: The ‘Las Vegas of Asia’
Although gambling is strictly prohibited on China’s mainland, the au-
tonomous region of Macau more than compensates for it. Known as the ‘Las Vegas of Asia’, Macau has witnessed a remarkable increase in industry revenues. The region’s unique position and aesthetic appeal have attracted millions of high-end guests eager to test their luck. In 2019, Macau’s casinos generated a staggering $36 billion in revenue, making it a major player in the global gambling scene. Notably, the main gambling hubs in Macau are owned by US giants such as MGM, Las Vegas Sands, and Wynn Resorts.
Australia: A Nation of Gamblers
Australia boasts one of the most developed gambling markets in the world, with a participation rate of approxi-
mately 80% among adults. In 2020 and 2021, Australians spent over $24 billion on gambling, according to statistics from the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation. The country’s love for gambling is further evident in the fact that almost 80% of all pokie machines (slot machines) in Australia are located outside of traditional casinos. These gambling terminals can be found in pubs, clubs, and various other hotspots, making gambling a ubiquitous part of Australian social life. With an estimated 8.6 million Australians regularly playing the lottery and buying scratch tickets, it is no wonder that Australia is considered one of the biggest gambling nations.
53 INFINITY GAMING
Gambling Giants
United Kingdom: A Regulatory Framework for Success
The United Kingdom has established a robust regulatory framework for the gambling industry since the early 2000s. The UK Gambling Commission oversees all gambling regulations, from licensing to strict compliance standards. The UK consistently ranks among the top countries in terms of gambling revenue. According to the UK Gambling Commission’s report from 2019-20, the nation’s gross gambling yield for that period amounted to £14.1 billion. The success of the UK’s gambling industry can be attributed to its early legalization and regulation of the online gambling sector, giving it a significant head start over other EU countries. As more European countries open their markets, rapid expansion is expected in the sector.
Singapore: The Rise of a Gambling Powerhouse
Singapore may be small in size, but it
has quickly earned its place among the giants of the gambling world. The citystate boasts several renowned gambling venues, with integrated resorts serving as the main attraction. Resorts such as Marina Bay Sands and Resort Worlds provide accommodation for millions of tourists each year, who have the opportunity to enjoy state-of-theart casinos on Singaporean territory. In 2019, over 19 million tourists visited Singapore, with gambling venues being a major draw. Popular gambling activities in Singapore include 4D/Toto, social wagering with friends and relatives, mahjong, horse racing, and casino gambling.
Canada: A Variety of Gambling Options
Canada is another country with a thriving gambling industry, offering a variety of casinos, racetracks, and lotteries to cater to different preferences. According to the Canadian Gaming Association, the country’s gaming sector recorded over $17 billion in revenue
in 2019. Some of the main gambling hubs in Canada include Casino Niagara, Fallsview Casino Resort, Casino de Montreal, and Parq Vancouver Casino Resort. Canadians are particularly drawn to activities such as lottery games, slot machines, and table games like blackjack and poker.
Conclusion
If we examine the list of the world’s most prominent gambling countries, we notice a common thread - they are all places with developed economies. People with higher disposable incomes are more likely to engage in gambling activities, making these businesses highly profitable. While developing economies also have gambling industries, players in those regions tend to spend less on casino games and betting. As the global gambling landscape continues to evolve, it will be fascinating to see how different countries rise and fall in the rankings of gambling giants.
