Message from Head of School Dear IGBIS Parents and Community Members, A huge thank you to everyone who was involved in International Day, especially Julie Aricidiacono and her team of teacher and parent volunteers who made it such a successful day. It truly was a tapestry of different nationalities and highlighted not only the diversity, but the similiarities in our school community.

News from Elementary School
Thursday’s Book Character Dress Up Day was a wonderful success with almost all elementary students wearing a book character costume to school. To add to the excitement of the day all elementary teachers as well as some secondary and administration staff also dressed up, with most wearing a Where’s Wally? costume, much to the delight of the students. A large number of pre-loved books were swapped and we still have quite a few for students to borrow and read at home. Thank you to our Elementary School Student Council and their teachers Ms Kari and Mr Harvey for organising the many different events throughout the day. This years Duathlon for students in grades 1-12 is scheduled for Wednesday 19th April from 8.00-10.00 am. Students will

start with a swim in the 50m pool followed by a run that will finish on the soccer field. Parents are welcome to attend, so please save the date. More information will be provided shortly. What’s coming up? ++ Friday 7th April: last day before the holidays. ++ Monday 17th April: first day back after the holidays. ++ Thursday 19th April: Grade 1-12 Duathlon Until next time,
Mrs. Claire McLeod Elementary School Principal

Elementary Book Day
Kari Twedt & Steve Harvey Elementary Student Council ............................................................................................... The Book Swap was a great success this week and the highlight was surely Thursday when all of elementary school dressed up as a character from their favourite book. Pirates, wizards, princesses and superheroes abounded, but it seemed that almost all the teachers were fans of Where’s

Wally. Kindergarten students even used the day as a learning opportunity to walk around elementary school and record a tally of how many “Wallys” they could find. Throughout the day, whenever students’ heard the tambourine jangling, they had to stop, drop and read their favourite book, no matter where they were. This made for some interesting literary fun in the swimming pool. Everyone had a fantastic day and happily went home eager to read the many “new to them” books they scored during the swap.

and instead of a basketball hoop you have a teacher standing on a bench with a pin in their hand. After we finished playing Balloon Basketball, we went back to the classroom and washed our hands and we each ate five pieces of pizza. Ms. Demnar and Ms. Stephanie also provided fruit.
On Friday, 17th March, Grade Two students took a bus to the KL Bird Park. When we arrived, Ms. Stephanie, Mr. Chris, Ms. Demnar and Ms. Mathies organised four teams. They were Eagles (Ms. Demnar), Peacocks (Ms. Mathies), Stephanie’s 6 (Ms. Stephanie) and Wolverines (Mr. Chris). Then we went into the bird park. We saw many kinds of birds including eagles, owls, peacocks, ostriches and hornbills. We collected ostrich feathers on the way through. After that we walked over to the Orchid Garden in the Perdana Botanical Garden. In the garden we saw many kinds of plants and flowers. After that we took a bus to the Planetarium. There we got to go into the anti-gravity room. We also got to see all the metals that are made of stars. After that we took a bus back to school.
After we finished eating our pizza we went down to the Level 1 playground. When we got back up we played games in the learning area like Charades. Then we got a muffin and went home.
Then the people who had A.S.A. went to their A.S.A. The people who didn’t have A.S.A. stayed in the lounge and the Grade 2 classrooms. After the people who had A.S.A. finished, Grade 2 went to the sports hall and played Secret Agent Tag with Mr. Simon. We played 3 rounds of Secret Agent Tag. After we finished that, we waited until Mr. Demnar came up to the sports hall. When Mr. Demnar got to the sports hall, we played a game called Balloon Basketball. It’s basically like basketball only that you have a balloon instead of a basketball

explored the similarities and differences of the instruments. Some of the instruments they could see and try out in the classroom.
“I had no idea the double bass was so big! Even taller than Ms Hadewych!” We compared the embouchures of the trumpet and trombone last week. They discovered that it is actually easier to blow into a trombone.
“Your lips need to be relaxed and do a kind of brrrrrrrr movement. The trombone is huge and heavy to hold!” The Grade 3 students went around the world. We started in Africa where we explored West African drumming. Then we had Kako and Sumire, our Grade 11 music students, visiting us and telling us all about the Gamelan music from Java and Bali. We continued our journey into China.
Early Years and Kindergarten have been introduced to Carnival of the Animals by Saint Saens. In this activity we explored the variety of instruments that were used for each of the animals in the story. We had lots of activities that enabled us to recognise the physical characteristics and sounds of the different instruments. Grade 1 students are looking at a musical story about Dragons and Dinosaurs. Around this story we are creating music, movement and drama. Grade 2 students are continuing their research on the instruments of the orchestra. They looked more specifically at the orchestra seating and the instrument families. They
