Message from Head of School Dear IGBIS Parents and Community Members,

crew! We hope that this is the beginning of a new wave of interest in the performing arts and Children’s Theatre at IGBIS.

There were some stunning performances by secondary students this week in both ‘Antigone’ and ‘The Real Face’. Antigone really drew in the audience as the plot unfolded and the actors gave such passionate performances. Another highlight was the discussion that took place with the Grade 10 actors who gave their perspectives on the questions raised by members of the audience.

While Secondary School was engaged in performing arts week, Elementary School students were taking part in a number of activities to highlight inclusion. Some of my favourites were seeing children sitting in mixed groups during lunchtime and elementary and secondary school teachers who swapped the classes they taught for part of a day. It is still hard to believe that ‘The Real Face” was entirely written, choreographed, composed, acted and directed by students. It was certainly by far the best example of ‘Children’s Theatre’ that I have ever witnessed. A large number of Secondary School students prepared and practiced for many weeks to ensure that the performance was a success. The theatre was more than half full on Thursday night meaning that at least 250 people came to see the performance. Congratulations to Hannah Newman and the entire

Next Friday we will have the Christmas Assembly and Holiday Bazaar. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Anne Fowles Head of School

News from Secondary School Dear parents and guardians, This week student leadership was on full display with four major in-school secondary events - a Student Council Assembly, (W)interlude (musical performances by the Performing Arts Committee), "Antigone" (Grade 10 Drama), and "The Real Face" (Youth Theatre, led by Grade 12 student Hannah Newman). It was an amazing week of involvement by our students, and a delight to watch for myself as well as the rest of IGBIS staff. The turnout and support of fellow students, parents and staff was very good, turning these events into celebrations of the strong community we have here. This support cannot be understated, I witnessed several examples of encouragement from students to their colleagues who were performing. The phrase "A rising tide lifts all the boats" comes to mind in our educational context, as our community gathers strength in support of our students and their development, which impacts not only on individuals but the wider group as well. Looking forward, we will be sharing more details about next semester in an email to parents, as we finalise the calendar and

events that will be taking place. As well, I look forward to seeing parents at the Christmas Bazaar next week, and the Christmas Assembly on Friday, which will be hosted by the Student Council. Sincerely yours,

Michael Arcidiacono Secondary School Principal

News from Elementary School This week has seen classes preparing for the Christmas assembly taking place on Friday 14th December. We hope you will be able to join us at 2pm in the theatre to enjoy the festivities. As is tradition, students will be able to wear Christmas clothes or just wear red and green to school on the 14th December. If you haven’t already managed to complete your Christmas shopping there will also be an opportunity on the 14th December to purchase items from vendors at our Holiday Bazaar that will start at 9.30am.

On Thursday as part of the inclusive week engagements there was a ‘Mix It Up’ of teachers. Teachers were allocated a random grade level and they taught a less familiar class, for example Mr. Hudson taught Mr. Mike’s Early Years class whilst Mr. Mike taught Mr. Hudson’s grade 5 class. This certainly gave teachers an appreciation of what each other does in their classroom setting.

Field trips are an integral part of our PYP programme. This week saw the Grade 1 students use the MRT to travel from Sungai Buloh to Kampung Selamat. This was part of their How the World Workssimple machines unit of inquiry. The students were in search of simple machines and once they found some they had to use their powers of observation to sketch them. Part of the excitement of the trip was to buy their own tickets and travel on the MRT train, for some this was the first time they had travelled on the MRT.

Elementary PE News Sean Lovesey PE Department

.................................................................................................................... As we build up to the December break our elementary students have been working hard in their PE lessons. Students have being doing a range of new activities to improve their abilities. Grade 2 and 3 students have been taking part in a football unit. Students have had to develop a range of techniques and abilities in order to show control with the ball. I am really impressed by the quality of the students and their focus on improving their skills. Furthermore, students have been taking part in water polo, learning a new sport. Students have really enjoyed learning the game and acquiring new skills.

Grade 1 students have been working on invasion games and looking at the different roles players have. Students have shown they can understand the difference between attack and defence and the skills needed for these roles. Kindergarten students have been developing their gross motor skills. This will help them develop their ability to catch, run and pass in a variety of sports. Overall, I can't believe how much progress students have made this semester. Students have consistently shown a passion for PE and always turn up to lessons with massive smiles on their faces. I can't wait for next semester!
