EDITOR’S LETTER

WATERBORNE

Welcome to the BASF refinish magazine Gloss. With the years end fast approaching it is a good time to reflect on what has been and what lies ahead for our industry. The response to our first issue of Gloss was extremely positive. In our second issue of Gloss we are taking an in depth look into how the change to waterborne coatings has impacted some of the key Bodyshops across Australia and New Zealand and why they made the decision to make the change. With industry legislation appearing not to be addressed again until mid 2010, it is still important for us to continue to encourage the change before it becomes enforceable. As you will read in the pages of this publication, 90 LINE has so many advantages over and above the environmental benefits. With low odour, accurate colour matches and an OEM quality finish to name only a few; we are continuing in our drive to encourage you to make the change before it becomes a legal obligation. This issue of Gloss will also introduce you to exciting new Glasurit technology that is being used by OEM’s on an international level, as well as an in depth look into the Glasurit training offer which has established a reputation as one of the industry’s leading programmes. I hope you enjoy the read and I look forward to meeting a number of you at our upcoming Access conference in Thailand. Thank you for your continued support through what has been a challenging year for our industry. I wish you and your family a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. If you have any further questions or feedback please contact us on (02) 8787 0100.

Making the transition. We talk to Bodyshop experts that have made the transition to Glasurit’s 90 LINE waterborne system. They highlight the positive impact it has had on their business. ENVIRONMENTAL ADVANTAGES PRESTIGE PAINT & PANEL RUSHCUTTERS BAY, NSW.

4 months ago, proprietor John Torrisi at Prestige Paint and Panel made the decision to change over to the 90 LINE waterborne system. Being concerned with the usage of a petroleum based paint, John wanted a healthier and more enviromentally friendly alternative. The immediate advantages were obvious with odour down to a bare minimum. Torrisi comments that “Not only is the odour problem solved, but we are also well within any current and foreseeable Council regulations. So that has been extremely positive in that regard.”

“ Colours so far in 90 LINE have been absolutely spot on with Mercedes” says Martin Chapman, “We haven’t had one that has caused us a problem yet.”

There was also a side benefit of the changeover. Prestige’s Manager Martin Chapman comments that the staff have “Little to complain about in terms of odour nowadays - it doesn’t even smell like a Bodyshop anymore.” Prestige Paint and Panel are predominantly a Mercedes Benz repairer - so colour and finish are critical to the business. “Colours so far in 90 LINE have been absolutely spot on with Mercedes” says Chapman, “We haven’t had one that has caused us a problem yet. 90 LINE also allows the Prestige team to replicate a Mercedes factory finish. Torrisi has found that “It is the closest thing I have seen to factory finish in terms of a proper gloss. It doesn’t look artificial and the metallic in the paint stands up better.” Being one of the first Bodyshops in Sydney to adopt the new technology has been advantageous to Torrisi. “It is the paint of the future and if we don’t do it now we would have to do it in 12 months to 2 years when legislation comes in, so we wanted to get a head start.” With the transition process and training all completed, John is now enjoying all the benefits of the system in his burgeoning business.

STAFF HEALTH

MT ROSKILL PANEL & PAINT AUCKLAND, NZ.

COLIN WAITE LTD AUCKLAND, NZ.

Brent Buckmaster from Mt Roskill Panel and Paint became a 90 LINE shop over 2 years ago. He had experienced first hand the side effects that solvents have on your health; “headaches, mood swings and tiredness affected all of us in the workshop. The more I thought about the future of my shop and staff the more I felt that it just wasn’t appropriate for my staff to have to deal with unnecessary solvents anymore.”

Gary Waite, Managing Director of Colin Waite Ltd is one of Auckland’s longest standing Bodyshops. Opened by Colin in 1959 it has been running for over 50 years and still maintains one of their original customers. Colin’s son Gary has been successfully managing the business now for over 20 years and specialises in Lexus and Toyota repairs.

“ Headaches, mood swings and tiredness affected all of us in the workshop. The more I thought about the future of my shop and staff the more I felt that it wasn’t appropriate to have to deal with unnecessary solvents.” I believe that the environment is important and I couldn’t think of a just reason why not to. In the future I felt that things were going to change and it would become even more of an issue. But the main point was my workers well being. They were even more impressed after receiving intensive training at the Glasurit headquarters and were pleased with the smooth transition. Brent decided to make the most of the change by rethinking all of his operating processes. He introduced a complete recycling system into the Bodyshop. “Now, along with the PPS Paint pot system, we recycle everything in our workshop. This means that our material and waste costs have been significantly reduced which in turn has increased our bottom line” says Brent.

“ Now, along with the PPS Paint pot system, we recycle everything in our workshop. This means that our material and waste costs have been significantly reduced which in turn has increased our bottom line.” The Glasurit training and Profit Manager programme have definitely helped Brent and his team improve their processes and productivity. With the new systems in place and all the performance benefits of Glasurit 90 LINE starting to positively impact his profitability, Brent could not be happier.

Over 6 months ago Gary made the decision to fast track his decision to change over to the Glasurit 90 LINE waterborne system. Similar to many Bodyshops today, Gary was having issues with Pollution control teams who were investigating complaints from a new building next door. As soon as Gary informed the council that he was moving to a waterborne system and the new products and an extraction system were installed, their complaints and the potential threat to his business dissipated. “The fact that we are in a semi residential area as well meant that it was the responsible thing to do” says Gary. Gary’s staff were excited about the change and have embraced it wholeheartedly. “I thought one of my staff was going to sleep in the paint room for a couple of nights because he loved it so much” jokes Gary. There was absolutely no resistance from them and they can see that it is better for them to be using the new system.

“ I thought one of my staff was going to sleep in the paint room for a couple of nights because he loved it so much.”

With over 40 cars a week going through the Bodyshop, Gary needed a seamless changeover with as little down time as possible. “The training was outstanding, that’s what makes Glasurit stand out from their competitors, their training programmes are second to none.” My staff were up to speed pretty much straight away. Now we waste less product and our productivity has improved.

“ T he training was outstanding, that’s what makes Glasurit stand out from their competitors.” Gary now has plans to start marketing their environmental stance and the fact that they are one of the first to take on the new technology. Additionally he has recently been nominated for a recycling award.

8 | GLASURIT – 90 LINE. MAKING THE CHANGE

COLOUR & PERFORMANCE RAY HASLAR AUTOHAUS AUCKLAND, NZ.

Stefan Tolich (Director) from Ray Haslar Autohaus saw the potential benefits of moving to a waterborne system over 2½ years ago and became the first Bodyshop in New Zealand to make the move to 90 LINE. He followed this up recently by installing an impressive state of the art tint mixing room to further improve colour mixing systems and reduce the amount of waste in his Bodyshop.

“ T he finish represents a factory finish so much better than the solvent system.” Stefan’s Bodyshop specialises in repairing top of the line brands such as Porsche, MercedesBenz, Audi and VW. There is no margin for error or scope for time delays so Stefan needed to ensure that the transition process was seamless. With a growing business and a team of 6 painters and a Bodyshop Manager, Stefan prefers to be very

hands on in the business and ensure that quality is paramount. “90 LINE hasn’t slowed up the shop at all. We have less fry up issues and the change has definitely been for the better” says Stefan.

“ 90 LINE hasn’t slowed up the shop at all. We have less fry up issues and the change has definitely been for the better.” Both the colour matching and the 90 LINE finish have been a positive change for Stefan who finds that, “The finish represents a factory finish so much better than the solvent system.” With all of the approved brands that his company works with using Waterborne technology out of their factories, it makes complete sense to use the same system in the Bodyshop with all the additional environmental benefits that are associated with it.

PRODUCTIVITY & SPEED SUPER FINISH PRESTIGE COLLISION REPAIRS MELBOURNE, VIC.

Melbourne’s largest 90 LINE user, Super Finish Prestige Collision Repairs, run a tight operation where profitability and productivity are paramount. With high output levels of cars every week and all other other prestige vehicles, Manager Con Herouvim’s main focus is on productivity and keeping his regular customer base satisfied with the quality of the finish.

Super Finish made the decision to change to 90 LINE over 4 years ago. “It was not a difficult decision to make” says Con, “We knew that it was the way the market was going and we wanted to go early. With factory BMW and Lexus already using waterborne, it made perfect sense.” Con has found that 90 LINE has given them an additional advantage over solvent products with the ability to accurately replicate the Factory finishes, “The Lexus metallic pigment is so much finer because it is waterborne, and 90 LINE helps us to match it perfectly.”

“ T he Lexus metallic pigment is so much finer because it is waterborne, and 90 LINE helps us to match it perfectly.” With an easy changeover process, and comprehensive product training completed, Con made all of the necessary adjustments to his shop to maximise and enhance the benefits of 90 LINE. “90 LINE has much better coverage than the other products and the reds are now fantastic because of the E tints” says Con. The cleaning of the guns and equipment is so much easier and has helped to speed up the whole process. This combined with the factory finish makes our job easier and more efficient all round.” Super Finish Prestige Collision Repairs are a growing business who now operate over 3 premises. They are well known for delivering outstanding customer service and combined with their increased efficiencies and improved replication of factory finishes, they have an extremely lucrative operation.

Our panels come with an attractive price tag.

Always specify Mercedes-Benz genuine parts. With reduced prices on selected Mercedes-Benz replacement parts, it makes sense to always fit Mercedes-Benz genuine panels. Now you can avoid problems associated with non-genuine parts. Parts that are ill-fitting and need reworking cost you time and money. Remember, Mercedes-Benz genuine parts are designed, engineered and tested by the same people who produce Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

That’s why our parts come with a 2 year unlimited kilometre warranty. While non-genuine parts may look the same, do they fit the same, do they perform the same, do they last as long? Would you compromise your reputation with non-genuine parts? Always specify Mercedes-Benz genuine parts.

12 | GLASURIT – A RODDERS LIFE

A Rodders Life! Mike Dascoli has been a Glasurit user for over 30 years and is one of the lucky ones who gets to indulge in his passion for cars as a job.

Just over a year ago, Mike Dascoli founded The Hot Rod Company – a bespoke Hot Rod company specialising in custom restoration, painting and reproduction of Hot Rods. “Passionate owners spend up to $200,000 for a custom built Hot Rod which can take up to 12 months to build” says Mike who consults with his clients to create exactly what they want using catalogues to chose details such as lights, trims and colour ideas. Mike and his team develop a number of unique designs themselves for clients using stunning colour and graphic combinations. Mike made the decision to use 90 LINE when he set up his new company and has not looked back. As well as all of the immediate benefits of low odour, environmentally friendly products and improved efficiencies, Mike has found that 90 LINE has allowed him to create true “Hot Rod” colours.

“Colours look a lot cleaner in 90 LINE which is an asset when we are trying to create interesting colours. Hot Rod colours are usually much brighter and incorporate the use of effects as well to ensure an eye catching finish” says Mike. He works with Glasurit to develop most of his colours from scratch making sure that they suit the unique body shape of his custom built cars as well as standing out on the road.

16 | GLASURIT – NEW CLEARCOATS

Silky-soft and beautiful to behold. Scratch and abrasion resistance Matte Clearcoat with beautiful results? Is it possible? Yes, with Glasurit’s new scratch-resistant, high-solids clearcoat solution. Developed by BASF Coatings, the soon to be released new Matte Clearcoat finish is based on systematic research to bring beauty and resilience together.

GLASURIT – NEW CLEARCOATS | 17

The polymer network

There’s something about Matte

Matte is here to stay

How is it done? A bit of “Polymer network 101” may be helpful at this point. The mesh size of the polymer network contained within the paint film is crucial - the tighter the network is knit, the better the scratch resistance.

Matte-effect paints are one of the major trends causing a sensation at car shows all over the world. The silky soft appearance of surfaces coated with matte-effect paints attracts drivers as if by magic. No wonder, more and more cars with “matte finishes” are being presented at car shows.

The new matte lacquer was first used on the “Mercedes-Benz CLK designed by Giorgio Armani”. Fine materials, warm colours and, above all, the matte shine of the finish together created the elegant, sensual look of this special-edition vehicle.

Matte Lacquer provides automotive stylists with a whole new spectrum of design options. Conventional automotive clearcoats just create the impression of high value finishes. The matte alternative presents a silky soft look that makes the viewer want to touch the surface of the finish. In this way, the appearance of the paint finish adds a new dimension of touch to the art of automotive design that complements colour, contrast and shade. There are various degrees of matteness and gloss to suit any taste.

And the newly released Mercedes-Benz CLS Grand Edition features a compelling platinum matte lacquer finish to emphasise the contours of the premium coupé. In keeping with the avant garde paintwork, the radiator grille louvres are also finished in the same platinum matte paint.

To achieve as tight a knit as possible BASF Coatings is using nanoparticle technology to raise the cross-link density and in turn, improve scratch resistance. To give you an idea of the size of the technology that is being used, the size of a nanoparticle is 1 billionth of a millimeter!

What’s different about Matte Matte-effect paints are two-component clearcoats. The key difference between matte-effect paints and high gloss lacquers is the addition of a matting effect that gives the clearcoat - the fourth layer of paint - a matte appearance that contrasts with the “standard” glossy finish.

“ A nd if scratches or dents should make repairs necessary, we have the right solution to properly restore the vehicle’s special matte look.”

But don’t think matte lacquer is only for highclass collector cars or eye-catchers displays at car shows.

“ Matte lacquers from BASF Coatings can create impressive design effects for people who want a distinctive look, but are also perfect for people who want to use their cars, as well as just admire them,”

20 | GLASURIT – NEW X COLOURS

Scratch resistant clear developed for Lexus. After two years of intensive research and development, Glasurit has launched a high performing Clear specifically designed for refinishing Toyota’s Lexus models. The 925-2002 HS Clear protects the highly scratch resistant OEM coatings on Lexus models by using innovative “reflow technology.” The new Clearcoat meets all of Toyota’s specific requirements from outstanding scratch resistance to long term gloss retention. The product underwent rigorous performance testing before it was launched. After extensive testing it still showed impressive gloss retention of more than 80%. This enables carwash brushes, gravel and road salt to leave considerably less trace on the car surface than a standard refinish product. It also makes it ideal for the Spot Repair process. The Glasurit 925-2002 HS Clear has low VOC levels and is compatible with the 90 Line waterborne range of products. It is easy to apply using standard work techniques and its properties are easily adjusted using the new 929-2002 Hardener and standard additives.

New Audi Glasurit XColours. Carmakers are increasingly using powerful, image-defining colour tones to differentiate their cars. Glasurit is ready to meet this demand with XColours. This new concept was first seen in April 2009 at the European Coatings Show in Nuremburg with a spectacular Audi Q5 coated with the new XColour - Black Violet.

“ Now carmakers can use colour even more effectively as a differentiating feature and provide the personality and individuality that today’s market demands.” A spokesman for AUDI AG said, “We refer to this finish as the ‘Black Panther Crystal’ effect. It is very powerful.”

Out of the ordinary Stephan Schwarte, head of Colour Development at BASF Coatings, added, “The XColours coating product range delivers both cutting edge design and maximum process reliability.”

Mint vintage BMW colours. World’s largest colour archive continues to grow - The Glasurit range now includes 29 vintage colours for BMW models built in the 1930s. This spectacular addition to the archive was possible through close analysis of exquisite original samples lent by BMW. The Glasurit Colour Information team was able to assign the samples and mixing formulas to the COLOR-PROFI System, adding another dimension to the stunning array of colour information available for classic cars.

Rare specimens Working from such high quality samples enabled the team to produce excellent colour matches. Such rare period paint samples in mint condition are generally impossible to find. The sample card fronts were deceptively understated, listing the model, the series and the paint that was used. Turned over, though, the sample cards were in mint condition, with two fabric swatches showing the original convertible top material and the upholstery. There was also a colour swatch of the original paintwork - a rare delight for painters and classic car lovers alike. The samples are now safely at home

at BMW in Munich and the Glasurit colour archive has been enriched with its 29 rare specimens.

With just the click of a mouse BMW enthusiasts and Glasurit Bodyshops can easily call up the mixing formulas for the historic BMW colours at www.glasurit.com.au and use today’s Glasurit paints to mix the original colour.

Each of the colours in the database corresponds with the respective BMW models of the 1930s so Bodyshops can precisely determine which colour was used for a particular model, such as the legendary 1936 BMW 316.

GLASURIT NEWS

State of the art head office training facility opens BASF Coatings has just opened a new state of the art training facility at their Head Office in Münster Germany. The Refinish Competence Centre (RCC) is one of the world’s most advanced information and training facilities for spray painters.

Now

better solution... there’s a

3M™ Paint Preparation System

The 3M™ Paint Preparation System (PPS) replaces Traditional paint mixing cups and filters & drastically reduces the amount of solvent required for gun cleaning. With the 3M™ PPS paint is mixed in a liner bag which marries directly to a filter and then is mounted on the gun with a dedicated adaptor. As freshly filtered paint is used, the liner collapses, allowing the gun to function at any angle. The bag and filter are disposable, leaving only the spray gun adaptor to be cleaned. Now that’s a faster, cleaner system, safe from contamination and ready to take your paint shop to the next level of Performance. For more information visit our website at www.3M.com or call

136 136

The facility has been designed to train employees from automotive refinish bodyshops and spraypainters within the automotive industry. It also will serve as an International training centre for Glasurit trainers undertaking the “Train the Trainer” programme. Trainers will travel from all areas of the globe including Australasia to attend these impressive training facilities. BASF Coatings now has 40 Refinish Competence Centres around the world. Münster is the key hub and competence center in this global network. The Application Centre has also received a complete refurbishment with a new reactor installed for the production of polyurethane, an important intermediate for production of water-thinnable coatings. These coatings are used in automotive OEM painting by nearly all leading car manufacturers.

Colour matching for automotive refinish paints now quicker and more accurate

Product quality, colour management and service are Glasurit strengths

Countless colours with countless variations adorn the bodies of cars all over the world. Finding the right colour for refinishing jobs is quite a challenge. Now, BASF Coatings has presented a new method to master the colourmatching quest. A computer programme that applies artificial intelligence learned from the data that continuously leave BASF Coatings’ colour labs. The programme automatically takes what it learns and applies it to match new colours. The result is unparalleled colour matching speed and precision in the labs. This colour information is invaluable for automotive refinish bodyshops.

Glasurit turned 111 years old in 2009. 111 – that means three times the number one and three pillars of success. With reference to the top products, the unique colour management and the “first-class service,” Glasurit holds the pole position in every regard. “A positive, successful future needs a golden past,” says Christoph Hansen, head of the Automotive Refinish business unit of BASF Coatings. “We are equipped, because 111 years of experience in automotive refinishing is unmatched and a perfect platform for further success, i.e. for customers and for us,” says Hansen.

The system was developed in BASF Coatings’ global network. Leading the effort is BASF Coatings in North America at the Whitehouse, Ohio, site. “One of the significant elements of this artificial intelligence is that it takes colour matching to a higher level with a greater degree of accuracy than ever before seen in the automotive refinish industry. It actually learns and gets better over time,” explained Paul Marshall, Colour Lab Technical Manager at BASF Coatings North America. “Our top priority is to offer automotive refinishers the best possible colour solution for the cars they need to refinish.” The new programme thus offers significant advantages over previous standard colour formulations, which rely on human trial and error. What’s more, in the future, it will be possible to match new colours and create customer service formulas with fewer colour adjustment steps and a much higher degree of accuracy. By the end of 2009, this artificial intelligence will contain colour data from all 10 BASF colour labs in Japan, Australia, China, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Spain, Italy and the United States. “BASF Coatings is acknowledged by its customers as a colour leader in the automotive refinish industry. With the new system, we can expand our leading position,” Marshall pointed out, emphasising the significance of the programme, which is already hard at work in five of BASF’s automotive refinish laboratories.

The product quality of Glasurit guarantees efficient, economical, safe working in Bodyshops. The best example of this is 90 LINE, the most successful water-based paint system for automotive refinishing worldwide. Regardless of whether it’s in the far north of Europe, in the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Eastern Europe or most recently in South America - 90 LINE from Glasurit is highly regarded the world over. 111 years – that also means that Glasurit has the world's largest colour library. There's hardly a colour that isn’t known, and therefore can't be reproduced. “We help our customers quickly find and precisely reproduce colours. This is one of the key factors in our success,” explains Christoph Hansen. The first-class service is also a major factor in the business success of Glasurit. Here individual solutions are agreed upon by the Glasurit consultants together with the customers. These solutions show potential for savings and development options, enabling the success of each customer. One of the guarantees for the success of Glasurit is based on its long history, and therefore on experience. “Glasurit” stands for “glaze-like hard coating” communicating a crucial quality characteristic of the paints originally produced by Max Winkelmann. With the new Refinish Competence Centre now opened in Münster touted as “the” training facility of the painting industry and an important marketing instrument for Glasurit. Here the claim to being number one in the industry is realised in a training and education concept that is unrivaled the world over.
