GLASURIT – EDITOR’S LETTER | 3

EDITOR’S LETTER

Welcome to BASF refinish magazine GLOSS issue 4. So far 2011 has delivered its fair share of challenges to our regional markets. With floods in Queensland, the earthquakes in Christchurch and an earthquake and Tsunami in Japan, our customers in these markets are dealing not only with extreme conditions but the rebuilding and recovery of their businesses. In particular the earthquake in Japan, which has had an unprecedented impact on the people, the economy and the supply of products across the globe. As the situation in Japan continues to unfold, we are reviewing any potential supply disruptions as the Automotive Refinish Division of BASF purchases several raw materials from Japan. We are working with our suppliers to understand their supply capabilities, and will re-evaluate our situation on an on-going basis; however at this stage we are not expecting any major stock issues as a result. Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by these tragedies. Looking forward from the natural disasters of the first quarter, our industry as a whole is quickly embracing the “water revolution” and in this issue of GLOSS, we visit more Bodyshops around the region and get a firsthand look at their experiences with the change from solvent to waterborne. As the move to water continues to gain momentum, I’m excited to announce the launch of the Glasurit Bodyshop Emissions Program which turns Bodyshop emissions into trees! GLOSS takes a look at this proactive approach in offsetting greenhouse gas emissions within the painting process by creating an easy, cost-effective and environmentally friendly industry initiative. The program will be officially launched to the market at this year’s Collision Repair Expo in May. Speaking of the Collision Repair Expo, we are once again delighted to be participating in this event. Come and join us for a coffee and an action packed 3 day program of innovations and practical demonstrations, and be the first to see the Glasurit Bodyshop Emissions Program at its official launch. Once again GLOSS is filled with great stories and initiatives happening in our market, I hope you enjoy the selection of articles in this edition of GLOSS and I look forward to meeting a number of you at Collision Repair Expo in Melbourne. If you have any further questions or feedback please contact us on (02) 8787 0100. Kind regards

onder how something so small can make such a huge difference? As more and more focus is directed towards sustainability and caring for our environment, the question must be asked- how will this impact my business and what can I do to make a difference? The proactive team at Glasurit have been researching and developing an industry program for Glasurit customers that will not only make a positive contribution towards the environment, but will also help you to market and promote your business as an environmentally friendly Bodyshop.

continues to support Glasurit’s on going commitment to being No. 1 for the environment. “This program allows us all to work together towards creating a healthier environment” says Ian Wilkinson - Business Director, Coatings BASF Australia.

The use of solvent based paints within the Bodyshop industry has long been one of the contributors towards solvent emissions. How to counteract and offset these solvent emissions in addition to proactively managing the associated negative image in your local community is an important consideration in relation to your business. Additionally leading OEMs and auto insurance companies, keen to promote their ‘green’ image, are increasingly looking to industry partners undertaking repair work which reduces solvent emissions as well as providing proactive environmental solutions.

How does the program work? Selected Australian and New Zealand Glasurit 90 LINE customers will be invited to join the program to offset their annual Bodyshop solvent emissions. Membership contributions are invested into the Carbon Neutral Australia tree planting program which reduces greenhouse gases caused by solvent emissions.

Specifically designed for the industry, in proud partnership with one of the leading not-for-profit greenhouse gas emissions reduction organisations Carbon Neutral Australia, the Glasurit Bodyshop Emissions Program helps turn Bodyshop emissions into trees! This program, together with the industry leading Glasurit 90 LINE waterborne system,

Why should Bodyshops be involved? > The program is easy and cost-effective. For as little as AUD $1000* you can rest easy knowing your business is reducing its emissions footprint. All emission reduction activity is undertaken on your behalf by our partner Carbon Neutral Australia, a successful not-for-profit organisation with almost 3 million trees already planted. > Enhance your community image. Membership Benefits • Simple and accredited method of off-setting solvent emissions. • Program accreditation to inform and impress both your private and commercial customers including exterior signage, membership plaque, branded spray suits and t-shirts. • Media/Promotional material to enhance your Bodyshop’s image including local press kit, advertising and customer give away templates, web banner advert, and permission to use Membership Accreditation logo in all your advertising activities in relation to Glasurit 90 LINE. • Customer promotional items to give away including car hangers and information leaflets. How do I express my interest? It’s easy to demonstrate your commitment to the environment; either call your Glasurit Approved Distributor for more information or alternatively you can visit us at www.glasurit.com.au Glasurit’s Commitment The environment is not an issue solely for governments to deal with, corporate, small business and individuals must also play their part and make contributions to reduce greenhouse gases. Glasurit is committed to making a positive contribution to the environment and has purchased 1,700 trees in recognition of the solvent emissions created by our Training facility at Wetherill Park, NSW. We will continue to monitor and look at other measures we can implement to further reduce the impact of solvent emissions at our sites.

government bodies, local government and community organisations. Why plant trees? Planting trees is an effective way to absorb carbon dioxide emissions. Carbon Neutral Australia plants hundreds of thousands of native trees each year in environmentally vulnerable areas. To date Carbon Neutral Australia has planted almost 3 million trees in Australia. Planting native trees to restore forest cover in degraded areas and link up remnant bush can help address a range of environmental issues, including climate change. Trees reduce the amount of CO2 (a key greenhouse gas) in the world’s atmosphere acting as a carbon sink. Trees sequester CO2 and store the carbon in their leaves, branches, stems, bark and roots. Trees provide many other benefits over time which may include:

• providing habitat for wildlife • increasing atmospheric oxygen • assisting with prevention of soil and wind erosion • assisting with prevention of water logging and salinity • providing wind breaks & shade • restoring and protecting biodiversity Tree planting by Carbon Neutral Australia is completed under strict guidelines to ensure it is as effective as possible. • Sites are prepared to industry best practice standards to promote maximum health, vigour and survival of seedlings. Legal agreements are registered on the title to protect the trees for 100 years. No carbon will be measured or traded from these sites. • Species are selected according to soil type and local climate. • Trees and seed are planted after rainfall in early winter.

in existence for more than 4.5 billion years and has demonstrated to be rather reliable: it’s the sun. The exploitation of solar energy for LAMPO is possible thanks to a 16 kWp photovoltaic plant located in Seggiano, Tuscany.

The LAMPO which means “lightning”, a full size sport cabriolet was previously presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2009.

Through the show car LAMPO, Protoscar and its partners aim to be able to demonstrate the innovative technology which includes absolute innovations like intelligent charging or interactive GPS-based range estimator and discuss potential applications together with car manufacturers, in order to implement these solutions into their plans for future Clean Cars.

LAMPO is powered by two BRUSA electric motors (one rear and one front), optimised for maximising acceleration and regenerative braking respectively. They deliver a total output of 268 HP and a torque of over 440 NM. The lightweight Lithium-lon battery pack with a capacity of 32kWh allows for a range of over 200km. LAMPO shows that also a zero-emission electric vehicle can offer the same performance as a traditional sports car. The primary energy source used for charging the LAMPO has been

When it comes to automotive OEM coatings, BASF Coatings is among the top three global suppliers. With cathodic e-coats, primers, basecoats and clear coats, BASF Coatings offer eco-efficient technologies and all around competence for every layer of the finish.

In close cooperation with Protoscar and BASF Coatings, BASF designer Eva Hofli from Germany has created a colour selection for the LAMPO that not only ideally suits the form of the car, but also establishes the colour relationship between the electric car and the aspect of nature. In keeping with the energy source, Protoscar also set high standards in terms of ecofriendliness for the refinishing project, choosing Glasurit 90 LINE waterborne basecoats for the release of the LAMPO 1. The waterborne paint system has a reduced solvent content and meets current European VOC legislation, which limits the percentage of volatile organic compounds, for example, in paint products. In addition, 90 LINE stands out for its easy and reliable application, as well as its high economic efficiency.

Making the change. The roll out of Glasurit 90 LINE in Australia and New Zealand is well under way with new Bodyshops signing up to make the change every month. We visited several of these Bodyshops to see what their experiences of the change to waterborne products involved and their feedback on the changeover. Carl Van Sanden BDS Panels Mornington, Victoria Australia Carl Van Sanden has been running BDS Panels on the Mornington Peninsula for the past 15 years. He bought the business 6 months ago and decided to make the change to waterborne as part of the new regime. His decision to go with 90 LINE was an easy one for Carl. “We wanted to go water based because it was the direction that the industry was heading in and we wanted to make sure we were on board early to iron out any glitches” he comments. The transition has been a surprisingly smooth one for BDS Panels with the high levels of training and support a key factor in minimising down time. “Glasurit sent a crew in for 2 weeks to help our team work on different jobs from start to finish” says Carl.” It was a great way for them to understand the products. We took 3 cars and had 3 staff repaint the cars using the new system from start to finish under the guidance of the Glasurit team.” Carl’s staff were initially not fully supportive about the suggested move to water. “We

selected 2 of our longest serving painters and sent them up to Sydney for training with the Glasurit team,” says Carl “We then came back and did the changeover over the weekend and worked with the rest of the workers. “After 3 weeks the remaining painters went up to Sydney for training and within 2 months the shop was full operational. “It has been a really positive change for us” says Carl, “the staff are positive about it and we noticed a big difference in the quality of the finish especially in the gloss level and colour.” Ross Leah - the Paint Shop Manager was one of the water sceptics “I was under the impression that if a system ain’t broke, then why fix it. I was happy with the solvent based system we were using and wasn’t impressed about having to learn a new system.” Ross was quickly won over after an intensive training program. He picked the new system up instantly and is now “With 90 LINE we are turning jobs around quicker, the guys clean up time has been halved and my team are really positive about it.” Carl Van Sanden

one of 90 LINE’s biggest advocates. “The Profi System is excellent, it is one hundred per cent quicker for us to match colour now. The shop is turning jobs around in less time and their cleaning time has halved using the PPS cups system” Ross observes. The other huge benefit that Ross has noticed is the lack of fumes for the waterborne products. “I suffered from really bad headaches on a regular basis, and now I am Panadol free! It really does make a difference" he says. The cleaner working environment and the lack of solvents in the air has been an added plus to the team at BDS Panels. Tom Johnston Mt Maunganui Collision Repairs Mt Maunganui, New Zealand Tom Johnston is an industry stalwart having owned his business in Mt Maunganui for over 19 years. Two years ago Tom undertook an extensive expansion project in the way of a custom designed new workshop. He invested heavily in maximising efficiency levels and the implementation of new equipment and systems. The new workshop was built specifically with

water in mind and Tom was one of the first in New Zealand to use 90 LINE. The shop design has received large amounts of attention and recently won the “Best Presented Panel Shop in New Zealand” award from Collision Repair. After a stringent training program, the staff moved back into an all new shop with 90 LINE installed and ready to go. “The impact on my staff has been quite significant” says Tom “the painter’s demeanor has changed dramatically. They were very tired and worn out. With the new waterborne products they seem less affected by it and their productivity is up. There are hardly any fumes in the paint shop and everyone is happy.” “It’s great to know that we can reproduce a factory finish every time”

TOM JOHNSTON

Mt Maunganui Collision Repair is a Mercedes and BMW approved repairer. The business mostly deals in new and late model cars. “Any late model car deserves to have decent paint and I can use 90 LINE confidently knowing that I will achieve a factory finish” explains Tom. Tom has also utilised the services of the Glasurit Vision Plus program to ensure that his new business is performing at its optimum levels. With a benchmarking program that compares his business performance to others similar in size and situation, Tom can monitor areas for improvement and identify any problems that need addressing. “The whole 90 LINE changeover and Vision Plus program has made me look at my business with fresh eyes and identify areas for improvement” says Tom “the support through all of this has been second to none”.

Toms focus is now turning to up scaling his marketing programs. With sustainability becoming more of an issue across all types of business, Tom is gearing his marketing programs towards people who are integrating environmental awareness within their fleet. Craig Rose Dealer Principal Motorline BMW Brisbane, Queensland Australia One step inside this slick operation and you can see that every small detail has been carefully considered in the design and layout of the business. Motorline BMW is a family business, owned and operated by Craig Rose. They have been located at a site in Springwood for close to 13 years. The facility holds a BMW dealership, a MINI garage, a café and in a recent addition, a Bodyshop. “In order to capture more customers, we needed to offer a one stop shop to our customers” says Craig. “It’s fantastic doing parts, sales, service and insurance but we needed to offer a go to service to repair vehicles in the event of an accident.” The new Bodyshop has been designed with state of the art equipment and systems, but no decision was more important to the Bodyshop than which product to use. “The choice of Glasurit was an easy one for me because of their professionalism and their staff on the ground” says Rose. He researched trends and industry developments in Europe and decided on 90 LINE. “For a prestige product, from a company that wants to be seen as environmentally sensitive and sincere there was only one choice and that was 90 LINE.” The Bodyshop has been up and running for 18 months and has a team of 10 staff.

The Motorline team have not looked back since the installation of Glasurit 90 LINE into the new Bodyshop.” It has proved to be wonderful from the very moment that we put it in” says Rose “we have had a number of painters through the Bodyshop who have never used waterborne products before and their ability to adapt has far outstripped their wildest dreams.” “For a prestige product, from a company that wants to be seen as environmentally sensitive and sincere there was only one choice - 90 Line “ Craig Rose Motorline BMW has stringent quality standards and deals nearly exclusively with European vehicles. Reproducing a factory finish is crucial to this business. Painter Braden Clutterbuck uses 90 LINE daily and has been impressed with the products qualities. “The way the product blends is amazing compared to solvent based products, the Metallics and Pearls look great and it is so easy to use. It just ends up looking exactly like a factory finish“ says Braden. The Glasurit Profi System makes it easy to replicate factory finishes on a car without having to match colours. “I know I can walk into the booth and there is a perfect lay down every time. I never have to match colours” comments Clutterbuck. New Bodyshop Manager Gerry Rafferty is responsible for the everyday management of the Bodyshop and its overall profitability. “90 LINE has proven very economical and has been great for the business” he says. With more expansion plans already underway, Motorline BMW will be a force within the industry to watch.

GLASURIT GLASURIT––ONLINE 90 LINE | 11

The newly designed Glasurit website has recently been launched in Australia. With improved functionality and loads of new features, the website offers up to date news as well as technical and colour information and a training booking section. We spoke to Tara Witton Commercial Sales Support Manager at Glasurit about the new site and what we can expect.

Glasurit onLINE

New information, Glasurit TV, sign up for online bookings for training courses and much more Why did Glasurit decide to update the website?

Our previous website was quite literally stuck in the “dark ages” it was dull and colourless, with lots of shades of grey. We needed a new website that reflected the nature of our business, was exciting and also local to our market. Where did the ideas for these changes to the site come from?

You don’t have to look too far these days for inspiration. The worldwide web is full of interesting and interactive websites, and so for a while I could say that I spent my day “surfing the net." Aside from checking out other peoples websites there were a number of internal ideas that we also explored. Some of these ideas we are still working on so you will see further additions to the site in the upcoming months. What challenges did you face when trying to update this website?

Our previous site was very basic and as such there was nothing that we could “reuse” so we started with a head full of ideas and a blank piece of paper. The biggest challenge was keeping the ideas under control! It’s like when you renovate your house, you’ve seen so many home improvement shows with so many great ideas that you really need to be careful you use only the ideas which work for the style of house you have otherwise you can very easily end up with a house that has limited appeal and ideas that are counter productive to each other. It was the same for the website; we needed to be selective with our “wish’ list and not try and jam the site full of wizardry.

It’s still early days, but data is showing an increase in traffic in all areas. What new functions/tools are now available?

We’ve added quite a lot and improved so many things. Training is now able to be booked and paid for online. There’s lot’s of information about 90 LINE and making the change to waterborne as well as e-brochures on the subject to read and download. GLOSS magazine is also available as an e-read and if you missed any editions all the back copies are also available. A really exciting addition to the new website is Glasurit TV. Over the coming months we will be adding videos on a variety of subjects such as colour trends and product demonstrations. There’s also a section on our innovative new Bodyshop Emissions Program which is also featured in this edition of GLOSS. We will also be developing more end-user material in e-formats, in an effort to reduce our environmental impact. From time to time we also feature details of any industry events we are participating in, such as Collision Repair Expo. As these are industry related events not organised by Glasurit we are unable to take bookings. However we will provide contact details for you to get further information.

12 | GLASURIT – BMW CALDER REPLICA HYUNDAI i-FLOW Congratulations to the team: dealer principal; Craig Rose, chief engineer; Scott Robinson, Race Mechanic; Andrew Mill, panel beater; Stephen George and spray painter; Braden Clutterbuck who completed such a wonderful restoration.

A Model Car Inspires A Project. A scale model car sparked the reproduction project of the BMW (E9) 3.0 CSL Calder Art Car Replica. Craig Rose, Dealer Principal of Motorline BMW is passionate about old BMW’s and was inspired to create this replica. “The initial inspiration came from the 1:18 scale model of this car we had on display in the dealership. My passion for classic BMWs and the experience of my team here at Motorline BMW, particularly Scott Robinson a BMW Master Technician, his experience with racing cars and his background of working for McLaren in the UK for 7 years inspired this project to become a reality. Plus we had the know-how with our inhouse Bodyshop M1 Bodyline to complete such a wonderful restoration. The car was previously being driven by its owner in Melbourne and we found it advertised through the forum for E9 BMW owners,” Craig said. The team was excited at the prospect of taking on the project of reproducing the authentic replica of the BMW Art Car by Alexander Calder, as it raced in the Le Mans 24 hour in 1975. The end goal of the project was to reproduce the car to the same technical specifications of its era but also introduce modern technology to improve reliability and to overcome unavailability of rare & expensive motorsport components. Careful consideration was also taken during the build to conform to the Australian Touring Car Masters regulations with a view that this car could compete on the track at a professional level if desired. Race mechanic, Andrew Mill

advised the team at M1 Bodyline as they started the huge task of restoring the body shell to its original rust free condition as well as how to lighten and strengthen it for motorsport use. “We had to ensure it would remain rust free for many years to come after fabricating the wheel arch inners and adding the 100mm wider fibreglass guard extensions that are designed to allow 11 inch rear and 10 inch front BBS 3 piece racing wheels. This car was in fair condition but it had rust starting to appear in the sills and front guards,” explained Scott Robinson, Chief Engineer. “The body preparation and paint was the greatest challenge of the project as we wanted to achieve perfection not only in colour match but in every detail in every place where the three colours came together on the car,” explained Braden Clutterbuck: spray painter. “If these critical lines of colours meeting were slightly wrong the whole colour scheme of the car would change from the original and the human eye would pick it up. When replicating a famous car like this an expert eye will find the faults if it was not perfect,” Braden said. The sand blasted shell was given several coats of Glasurit's epoxy primer then handed back to panel beater Stephen George to complete the panel beating. The team then over coated the panel work with a generous amount of polyester spray filler

as the fibreglass guards and quarters were grafted on. Once blocked, they primed the car in Glasurit 285-500 primer and then re-primed a couple of areas to ensure perfection. After a few days of preparation work the team decided they needed to make it look like a car again and so in it went for a coat of white, wet on wet (285-38) the base for the custom red 22 LINE. Of course slow hardener and reducer were used in both of these stages. Bit by bit and many rolls of tape later, the colours started appearing. First the white 55 LINE basecoat which of course was the ground coat as well, for the yellow and blue. Clutterbuck said “the clear choice for me on a big job like this is the Glasurit 923-255 HS Clear. Its ease of use and wicked build properties allow a great flow and even build over such things as multiple coats and stripes of basecoat as well as an easy cut and polish job after.” Now that the reproduction is finished they plan to use the car to promote Motorline BMW & M1 Bodyline by displaying it at classic motorsport events & potentially competing in these events. They have been invited to race the car in the Australian Touring Car Masters as a guest vehicle at certain rounds. It could potentially also compete in Tarmac Rally events such as Targa Tasmania.

GLASURIT – LATEST COLOUR TRENDS | 15

FROM COLOUR TRENDS TO TREND COLOURS Colour designer Eva Höfli has plenty to say about today’s fashions, tomorrow’s trends and their impact on automobile colours in the future. She works in Europe’s top Colour Design Studio, run by BASF Coatings in Munster, Germany. GLOSS Magazine had a few questions for her...

What’s every day work like for a colour designer in the car industry?

It differs a great deal, depending on what stage our work has reached. During the research phase we travel around to furniture and textile fairs to make observations on what new colours and surface textures are on the way in. With this knowledge we then take an initial collage to the lab to develop paint samples from these ideas with the help of our paint specialists. The end product of this development phase is our trend collection. Can the trend colours from the textile and furniture industries be applied to the car sector?

Certainly not on a one-to-one basis. Colour trends in the textile field are far more short lived than those in the furniture sector or even in the car industry. We develop

a feeling for the direction in which the tastes of the consumer are going to move because we observe these trends over the long term. In what direction is the colour trend of the future moving?

Nowadays there is no longer a megatrend; our world is becoming increasingly individualistic. Today we have different target groups with different focal points. We split our trend collection up into different trend worlds, for instance the value oriented, the technology enthusiasts or a trend towards females. One major trend also has an environmental lean, these emotional colours tend to take their cue from nature: sensual pastel colours ranging from grey-based apricot to yellowish beige, discreet green and warm brownish tones. >>

16 | GLASURIT – LATEST COLOUR TRENDS

A

new, fresh colour may quite well be the crucial factor in the decision to purchase if the customer has to decide between two similar vehicles.

For years now black and silver have been by far the most popular automotive colours. Do you see a change in trend there?

red to green and there are shades of black with colour highlights from red to purple.

How long does it take for a trend colour from your collection to appear on a car rolling off the line?

Black and silver will keep their place at the top. Nevertheless, quite a lot is happening to these colours too. Special effect pigments or the addition of other hues ensure that there’s movement in the field of colours and they ensure that black and silver will never be boring for consumers. Thus, for the colour black alone, there are extremely dark hues with subtle special effects and sparkles, there is a degree of colour travel; for example from

What factors determine whether or not a colour trend produces a trend colour?

It all depends. Some of our trend colours can be used immediately for OEM coatings. Others, with brand new effect pigments still need a little more development time.

That is determined by the vehicle manufacturers and, of course ultimately by the car purchasers as well. It’s the vehicle manufacturers that pick up colours from our trend forecasts and then develop them further with us. It’s the consumers who choose a very specific colour from the range offered by the manufacturers.

Experience shows that it takes between three to five years from the day we present our trend collection to a car manufacturer to the day the vehicle rolls off the assembly line in one of these trend colours. Why are new colours being constantly developed?

The vehicle manufacturers are always looking for new colours that will give their new models a distinctive appearance. Technical details don’t make a new model stand out from its predecessors or those of competitors as much as a new, fresh colour does. Such a colour may quite well be the crucial factor in the decision to purchase if the customer has to decide between two similar vehicles. What colour trends have the BASF colour designers identified for the Asia Pacific region?

Visit the new Glasurit website to see an interview with Eva Hölfi on Glasurit TV.

The economic situation is influencing the colour trends for this region. People are preferring more conservative colours, neutral colours like white, silver, grey and black. These are refined with subtle sheens, emotionally laden colour transitions, lustre and three dimensional images of great depth, heaviness and density.

Because only well organised, wellmanaged, customer-orientated Bodyshops will be winners, Glasurit has developed an innovative and effective Value Added Services offer called Advanced Bodyshop Solutions. Advanced Bodyshop Solutions or ABS for short comprises of a series of modules for the owner or manager of a Bodyshop who is genuinely interested in improving the performance of their business. They can be implemented in your Bodyshop by a team of highly trained specialists who will offer you support, guidance and commitment using the ABS tools and their knowledge built up over many years in the automotive industry. ABS modules include Vision Plus (KPI monitoring), Paintshop Audit (auditing a paint shop compared to an ideal scenario) and Facility Planning for new or existing Bodyshops. It’s evident that the daily tasks of a manager lead them to spend more time working in their business rather than on their business. “In a mature, complex, and evolving market, we believe it is our duty to assist our customers with knowledge and support in the operations of their Bodyshops” says Paul Hooper, Glasurit Key Account Manager ANZ. “In essence, your future is our business, whether driven by economic, legislative or technology/ repair methods, we realise that the industry is changing and that our customers must adapt accordingly.” Advanced Bodyshop Solutions concentrates on raising efficiency, removing wastage, improving

repair standards, increasing communication and traffic through the Bodyshop and organising an efficient layout to assure long term viability. “We put your workshop under the magnifying glass and systematically investigate all the areas surrounding the painting process: the equipment employed, the products used and the training needs of the employees identifying precisely where the need for action exists” says Paul Hooper. A major benefit of the solutions package is the action plan. He continues “we don’t just leave you a report, but together we demonstrate how the proposed improvements can be implemented and we will guide you to a better process for continuous business improvement and lean techniques.” Mark Wall is one of the Glasurit Bodyshop Solutions Specialists. He has recently undertaken a number of Facility Planning modules for customers looking at either improving efficiencies in their shops or custom building new facilities. “We look at each Bodyshop’s production targets, how many repairs they want to complete in a year, the type of repairs they undertake, and what their goals are” says Mark, “we then calculate their Bodyshop work areas needed and their labour and equipment requirements and from there we use our layout software to design layout options.” Each design uses layout guidelines that take into account the different bay sizes, the sizes of the generic work area and any specific customer requirements focusing on layouts and the workflow. “BASF globally have been doing Facility Planning for years” says Mark Wall, “the calculators that we use to plan capacity and the technology we use is based on years of experience on both a local and international level.”

Craig Lidgerwood from Doncaster BMW has recently used Glasurit Facility Planning to design a new Bodyshop as a part of their dealership under direction from BMW Australia. “Getting in touch with Mark Wall at Glasurit was probably the best thing we did for our business” says Craig. “We gave Mark the floor plan of our existing business and ran through our capacity goals and equipment requirements. He came back with four excellent concepts for use with ideas that we had never even considered. Each concept is really well designed and took into account how many booths we would need, the amount of hoists and storage areas as well as the number of cars we could spray. Our requirements were a little bit different as we were a two level facility incorporating a car lift and glass booths.” Craig was extremely excited with the outcome and is currently working on council approvals. “The service, plans and levels of presentation was far and beyond our expectations” he says. The new Doncaster facility aims to be completed by early 2012. Facility Planning has everything you need to make the perfect investment in your workshop, whether it’s the reorganisation of existing workshops or a completely new building, Glasurit has the ability to aid the design to ensure its success. New 3D software is due to be launched in May, introducing improved visuals and modelling program presentations. Close cooperation between Opel and BASF Coatings for the Opel GTC Paris concept car made an impact with the experts at the Paris Motor Show.

Elegance & passion It is th e b r i l l i a nt r e d pa i nt by BASF Coatings that gives the dynamic three-door compact GTC Paris a passionate touch. Opel/Vauxhall Design and BASF Coatings designers have worked together closely to give the GTC Paris concept car a special and elegant exterior. This concept car evoked “oohs” and “aahs” from the audience of experts at the Paris Motor Show. This intense red colour was created to convey elegance and passion. Jeannette Finger, Colour and Trim Designer for Opel/Vauxhall, explained: "Keeping in line with the brand’s DNA, it is an achievable dream car, conceived to showcase an energized brand. This energy is also conveyed by the vibrant and expressive red exterior colour.” The colour was custom-made for the Opel/ Vauxhall GTC Paris to resemble XColors. BASF designer Eva Höfli explained that “XColors – designed by BASF” stand out for two things: "striking colours that contribute to a distinctive appearance and innovations in paint

development. The result is pure emotion.” The new XColors palette allows customers to combine state-of-the-art design and the highest level of application reliability in OEM application. XColors are able to bridge the gap between design and feasibility. In any case, with the Opel/ Vauxhall GTC Paris, the German brand has joined forces with BASF Coatings to design a car that conveys elegance and passion. BASF Coatings, the Coatings Division of the BASF Group, develops and produces a high quality range of innovative automotive OEM coatings, automotive refinishes and industrial coatings as well as decorative paints. Ralph Elstermeier, BASF Coatings' account manager for Opel, emphasises the successful cooperation. “Opel/Vauxhall is a longstanding and important customer for us. I’m very happy that this partnership is now experiencing a particular highlight with this concept car and that we could contribute to its design."

Outstanding success of this built ride. Ziggy’s Hot Rods boutique business at Port Stephens brings a highly specialised approach to car building and is renowned for their fabulous paintwork. BASF Asia / Pacific Technical Skills

Employees of BASF Australia Ltd showed their generous and compassionate support towards individuals and communities affected by the recent floods in Queensland and Victoria, donating to the Premiers Disaster Relief Appeal 2011. The company matched employees’ donations dollar for dollar. All money raised by the fund will be directed to address those with the greatest need. Between December 2010 and February 2011, the resource-rich northern state of Queensland was severely hit by floods and cyclones, killing more than 35 people and swamping more than 30,000 homes. Roads, bridges, and rail lines were destroyed, and coal exports and crop production have been heavily disrupted. Floods also hit the states of New South Wales and Victoria, as well as Western Australia. BASF colleagues across Australia and New Zealand felt for the victims and raised a total of $6170. BASF Australia Ltd matched every employee donation dollar for dollar, so that a total of $12,340 could be donated to the Premiers Disaster Relief Appeal 2011. The funds raised will be used to provide welcome support to the people and communities in the recovery process. Ross Piling, Chairman and Managing Director of BASF Australia Ltd, said, “On behalf of the Management of BASF Australia Ltd, I would like to thank our employees for their generous support and contribution during this time of hardship. We’re proud of their generosity.”

Contest. Two Australians were amongst eight other finalists to take part in the BASF Asia Pacific Refinish Technical Skills Contest. It is an exclusive competition testing the competencies of the region’s top professional automotive refinish educators in BASF Coatings. The first runner-up, Troy McHugh and second runner-up, Jason Evers both from Australia, are veterans with more than 20 years’ experience. The winner, Peter Ye Tian-Min from China has also been working with the automotive refinish industry for 14 years. “I feel privileged to have been involved in this event. The level of skills from all TSR’s was of a high standard which made the competition very difficult. I would like to congratulate all of my work colleagues from Australia as well as in the Asia Pacific region for their efforts in this competition,” Jason said. “Contrary to popular belief, BASF does not only sell refinish paint but they sell the ability for a refinish customer to repair and repaint a vehicle perfectly, on the first attempt. For this, we have committed to providing our customers with high standards of technical know-how, services and support. While the evaluation criteria of the contest are very demanding by industry standards, the contest is also a rewarding and fun capstone event for our colleagues, it being part of our continual developmental efforts for our technical service educators,” said Ken Marshall, Director, Automotive Refinish Coatings Solutions Asia Pacific. “We continually invest in training and developing our technical service professionals to ensure their competencies go beyond industry standards when it comes to educating customers and transferring their knowledge and best practices to the industry. By doing so, we help to ensure that our customers remain profitable and competitive,” continued Marshall. The next Asia Pacific Refinish Technical Skills Contest is already scheduled for 2012. Until then, the automotive refinishing coatings teams in their respective countries are working up their refinish specialists and trainers, aiming to push BASF standards to a new high.
