Industry Placement

Employer Information Our Industry Placement employers are highly regarded within the Ignatius Park College community and the program could not run successfully without their ongoing support. We appreciate the time and effort employers put into our students. The following information summarises employer responsibilities during Industry Placement.

Prior to Placement Prior to students commencing Industry Placement, a Work Experience Agreement and a Risk Assessment form must be signed by all parties. These are a legal requirement. These Agreements will be forwarded to you by the VET Office and must be signed and returned to the College prior to the student’s commencement. Information regarding insurance and public liability will be supplied by the College. The Department of Education and Training has an arrangement with an insurer to indemnify students from state and non-state schools and work experience providers (employers) on approved work experience placements. Please contact the VET Program Leader if further information is required.

During the Placement Being new to a workplace can be challenging for students as this could possibly be their first interaction of this kind. In the interests of workplace familiarisation and Workplace Health and Safety, we ask that employers offer students a Workplace Induction, which should provide students with an understanding of: •

Safety requirements applicable to the job and workplace, including PPE.

Applicable procedures in case of accidents and emergencies.

Procedures to follow as well as the person to notify in the event of absence.

Introduction to personnel with whom the student will be working directly and to consult in the event of problems or concerns.

Policy and procedures for bullying, harassment and/or discrimination.

ehaviour requirements and expectations. This should mirror the B expectations you have on your own employees, including mobile phone use.

Required dress standard applicable to the job and workplace.

Location of facilities, toilets, change rooms, emergency exits etc.

Start and finish times, break times and any other applicable work routines.

If there is an accident, incident or damage to property, we ask that you immediately contact the VET Program Leader by telephone, 0438 185 403. There is an expectation that students are supervised at all times and employers maintain confidentiality regarding any student’s medical information etc. Students will ask their Supervisor to sign their Logbook at the end of each placement period. Whilst the student is on Industry Placement, the employer will be telephoned or visited by a College staff member to check on the student’s attendance and performance. We ask that employers are honest in providing feedback, so we may assist the students to become worthy and valuable members of the working community.

Industry Placement at Ignatius Park College Each year approximately 120 Year 11 and Year 12 Ignatius Park College Vocational Education and Training (VET) students undertake nationally recognised qualifications in Construction, Engineering, Resource Infrastructure and Work Practices, Hospitality and Information Digital Media and Technology. Some senior students also complete courses externally in areas such as health, fitness, automotive and tourism. As part of their vocational education, students participate in four, one-week blocks of Industry Placement each year. Industry Placement is a valuable opportunity for our students to gain real life work experience in occupations of their choice. This placement can often affirm a student’s career pathway but, just as importantly, can confirm that a particular job is not suited to them. The Industry Placement program is coordinated through the VET Department at Ignatius Park College. Please keep this document for future reference. If, at any time, you have queries regarding the program please contact the Program Leader by telephone on 0438 185 403.

Student and Parent/Carer Expectations While students are on Industry Placement they are representing the College and must uphold the highest of standards. Below are some points to be considered during Industry Placement: •

Confirming Placement - Students must contact their employers by Wednesday, the week prior to placement. During this contact students must confirm their attendance at placement as well as details such as the work address, start/finish times, attire and any other site-specific expectations.

• Logbook – Students are issued with a Logbook which they are required to complete daily and have a supervisor sign at the end of the placement period. Logbooks must also be sighted and signed at the VET Office upon return to the College. • Transport – Students or Parents/Carers are to organise transport arrangements to and from Industry Placement. Employers are not expected to provide transport. If there are transport issues, please contact the VET Program Leader prior to the placement. •

Punctuality and Absenteeism - Being punctual is a core expectation. If a student is absent from the workplace he is to phone the employer prior to his expected starting time. The Parent/Carer is to phone the VET Program Leader (not the College Office) prior to 8:30am on telephone, 0438 185 403.

Behaviour and Conduct – Students are expected to show initiative and enthusiasm during their placement. They must be aware of their body language and be willing, interested and keen to learn. It is also imperative students listen to and closely follow instructions to the best of their ability.

• Attire – Students must confirm in advance with employers the appropriate attire and personal protective equipment required. Students in trade related industries are expected to wear the College VET uniform, unless the employer has advised otherwise. Students are expected to wear the College crest with pride and abide by the usual College standards (shirt tucked in, no earrings, haircut styles as per College policy). •

Confidentiality and Honesty – While on placement, any employer or client information students have access to must be treated as confidential.

Safe Work Practices – All students on Industry Placement have certain obligations in the workplace. As with all workers they must: •

comply with lawful instructions given by their supervisor

use all required protective equipment

must not place other employees or themselves at risk

must not wilfully or recklessly interfere with or misuse equipment or materials provided.

• Non-Discriminatory Work Practices - The Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 prohibits either direct or indirect discrimination based on sex, race or impairment. Any person who experiences discrimination or sexual harassment may make a complaint to the Commissioner of the Anti-Discrimination Commission within one year of the alleged contravention of the Act.

For further information contact the VET Program Leader on 0438 185 403. We would like to thank our Industry Placement employers for their greatly valued ongoing support.
