Council helps keep Parish Council play areas up to date Bath and North East Somerset Council has awarded grants to eight Parish Councils to help pay for replacement play equipment. In the last 6 years, the Council has allocated 60 grants to Parish Councils across the area. Play is an important part of child development, and the grants help keep play areas up to date and make sure that children living in the area can use them. The Councils’ Parks & Green Spaces team carry out quarterly inspections of Parish Council play areas to identify old and faulty equipment. These along with the results of independent inspections help the Council to assess applications made by Parish Council’s for grants to replace equipment in play areas. The Council provides 85% of the funding needed and the Parish Council makes up the remaining 15%. Councillor Chris Watt (Conservative, Midsomer Norton Redfield), Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “Bath and North East Somerset Council wants all children to have the chance to play in a fun and safe environment. The Parks & Green Spaces team carry out an important role by working with Parish Councils to improve and maintain play areas so that children can continue to play

News & Reviews LOCAL TEACHER MARRIES
Fruit and Vegetable Creations are amazing!
Miss Alexandra Russell who joined Midsomer Norton Primary School as a year 5/6 Team Leader earlier this year was married to Nathan Webb on 14th August at Coombe Lodge, near Blagdon. Children played a large part in the event, with some of Alexandra’s former pupils playing the recorder prior to and during the ceremony. Nathan, who is also a teacher at St. Mary Redcliffe Senior School, Bristol and Alexandra spent their honeymoon in Mauritius before returning to their new home in Worle, Somerset.
Children at Trinity Primary school in Radstock were asked to produce a fruit or vegetable animal or person to celebrate their Harvest festival. Every child worked tirelessly (parents too!) to showcase moles, birds in trees, dogs, worms, owls, rats, cats and many, many more creative sculptures as you will see from the picture. Well done to you all they really were fantastic!
HALLOWEENIES Children love to dress up, but Sarah Carlisle from Timsbury was uncomfortable with the concept of trick-or treat, so for the 2nd year running, she reversed the idea by giving away home-made cakes and biscuits locally in return for donations to help children from developing countries. This year they were collecting for the Rise Foundation’s “We Are Together” campaign in support of children from the Agape orphanage in South Africa. They call themselves the Halloweenies to try to distinguish themselves from Trick or Treaters. They posted a flyer through houses in Timsbury 2 days before Halloween, then set off in costume with cakes, collecting tins and permits around dusk on 31st. The children had a fabulous time and were warmly welcomed by houses they called on. They seemed really inspired to know that their efforts could do so much to help children in need and were encouraged by the positive response

from householders. The idea seems to have developed momentum since last year and this year the Halloweeners were joined by 2 more families enabling them to raise more money up to £200. This was also helped by setting up a webpage to enable friends and family from further afield to support them at www.justgiving.com/halloweenies Well done to Katie Carlisle, Rhiannon Bramley, Felix Bramley, Morgan Jones, Conway Jones, William Glover and Jason Carlisle, Tarran Jones and Lilly Glover on a fantastic idea. Lets hope that more children will adopt this idea in 2010.
Daniel Turull joined High Littleton Primary School as deputy Head Teacher in September following 11 years spent teaching at Shoscombe Primary School. Daniel says ‘I was sad to leave Shoscombe School after such a long time but I am settling in well at High Littleton and enjoying the challenges and working with the children and the team here’.
CHILDREN’S HOSPICE WEEK AT ST JOHN’S The Local Lions Many of you will have seen the pigs that were all over the City of Bath last year, 2010 will welcome a pride of 100 individually decorated, life size lion sculptures to help raise funds for local charities and to bring a smile to the faces of residents and visitors too. Longvernal Primary School has also been designing their own lions to mark this event. The school has been joined by artist Matt James who has been working with the children to encourage their creativity whilst designing and painting their own personal lions. Once all of the lions have been completed a piece of artwork will be created displaying the pride of Longvernal’s creative talent.
Village school goes from strength to strength St Mary’s Church School, which services the community of Writhlington as the local village school, is celebrating being judged ‘A Good School’ by B&NES School Improvement Partner service. Already recognised as a ‘Satisfactory School’ with lots of ‘good features’ by Ofsted at their last inspection a year ago, the school has not been content to rest on its laurels. Exciting curriculum developments have made ‘learning irresistible’ for children and the schools experienced teaching team have been joined by two new and enthusiastic young teachers this year. All of this means a vibrant school with lots of great things happening for the children. Pupil numbers have increased this year and clearly parents are responding to the schools ever growing reputation. Bath and North East Somerset Authority have recently agreed with the school’s governors an increase to the school’s planned admission level so that any future growth in numbers can be accommodated. ‘Our school is delighted to be recognised for the quality of what we do’, commented Deputy Head teacher Cathie Lampert. ‘There is so much going on here not just during lessons but with the very large range of after school clubs too’. ‘We have lots of developments coming in the future too, starting with a new outdoor learning area for our Early Years classroom after Christmas’.
Each year at St John’s, we participate in the Children’s Hospice week. We always have special events throughout the week to raise money for the wonderful work the hospice do to help those children who are ill. We started the week with a special assembly which was led by a visitor who told us all about the hospice, the children who spend time there and the wonderful staff who make them all feel so special. Our fund raising task this year was to design a hat. Each class was given a cowboy hat and they could decorate it in any way they liked. At the end of the week all the hats from our fourteen classes were displayed and everyone had the opportunity to vote for their favourite hat by placing money into the pot beside it. The idea was that the hat which raised the most money was the winner. There were some really fantastic designs like an elephant, swimming pool and all sorts of really creative designs. Our class made the hat into a little house and we became the winner as we raised the most money. 3C – Mrs Shearns class.

News from MIDSOMER NORTON KUMON STUDY CENTRE The Study Centre has now been operating for 15 months and has grown to accommodate over 50 students. This is an excellent achievement in such a short time, but also demonstrates the commitment from local parents and students, to further individual learning in Maths and English, using the Kumon Method. The Study Centre, which is run by Kumon Instructor Janet Russell, has recently been awarded the Kumon Quality Standard , following a rigorous training and probationary period over the last year. This has included staff training – yes, all staff complete daily worksheets – as well as testing in the higher levels, visits to other centres, centre development and regular assessments by the Kumon Area Manager. Only 7% of all Kumon Centres in the UK have been successful in achieving this status. Janet says, “Our students continue to make rapid progress through the levels due to their
dedicated hard work and the support given by parents. We are seeing many students moving into higher maths sets at school, as well as the impact made by both subjects, on school work. The skills learned and practised at the Study Centre dovetail into the National Curriculum, enabling our students to gain good grades at school. Students gain instant success through our Easy Start Point, and this gives them a feeling of confidence, which then allows them to build up skills and develop deeper learning skills. Children need to learn how to learn for themselves, and the Kumon Method supports this structure, moving the students to becoming independent learners through their own personalised learning programme which is practised on a daily basis. This daily study habit not only provides an excellent framework ready for Secondary school and university, but also for life.” Janet moved the Study Centre in November to its present location at Somervale School, due to growing numbers. Classes run on Monday and Wednesday from 3.45– 5.45 pm with the students spending about 45 minutes for study time. The new venue provides a Study Centre for students, a Marking & Activities Room and a further room for parents to wait whilst their child(ren) visits the Centre. Whilst work is being marked by Janet’s team of six trained Kumon Assistants, the students practice their multiplication
tables, number bonds, explore problem solving and number patterns, read and work on punctuation and grammar skills. The students are then further drilled in these basic skills, by the Assistants, working to timed targets. Each student has a month-by-month target planned over a year, which is reviewed annually. This helps the student to aim for their ASR awards (Advanced Student Roll), which recognises that they are working above their current school level. Many of the students have already received Bronze and Silver awards over the past year. Communication Classes are held three times a year, which is an opportunity for parents and students to discuss progress and development with Janet, individually. Janet is offering a FREE TRIAL again, during January and February, to enable new and existing students to experience the Kumon Method, with no financial commitment for two weeks. If you are interested, or just want to learn a little more about how Kumon can help your child, give Janet a ring on 01761 453720 or email her on midsomernorton@kumoncentre.co.uk

Year 6 student reaches Gold in mathematics Ashley from Longvernal Primary School has recently been awarded with an outstanding achievement. It took Ashley 20weeks of non stop maths to achieve his Gold from Bath Rugby Education Centre. Chris Andrew of the Bath Rugby Education Centre said ‘We have over 400 students and work with over 30 different primary and secondary schools that visit the centre each year and only about 20 go onto reach full Gold. It is a real achievement and takes a lot of perseverance and dedication to reach a gold certificate and it is really excellent.’ Well done Ashley!

What a start! Mrs Jane Richardson joined Longvernal Primary School in Midsomer Norton as their new head teacher in September this year. Jane has joined the Longvernal team from her post as deputy head teacher at St Mary’s Primary School in Writhlington and is thoroughly enjoying working with the children and the team at Longvernal.
The written word Pupils at St John’s Primary School in Midsomer Norton have been finding out the value of a written letter... They wrote to a wide variety of people including celebrities, friends, the council and many more. The letters ranged from requests to develop our local area to fan mail asking for an autograph. The children are over the moon to have already received a large number of replies, including signed pictures of Lewis Hamilton, the Formula One Driver and Dame Judi Dench, famous for many roles but who some children may know as “M” from the James Bond films. Letters have come back from places as far away as Canada and Australia. Many pupils are now writing even more letters from home – they have really caught the writing bug! Maybe the “Hey!” readers would like to follow their example...e-mail might be a faster form of communication but it looks like letters have really got word power! Year 6 St John’s Primary School MSN

On the night before Christmas, all children will be tucked in their beds while “visions of presents dance in their heads.” When they awake they will check their stockings to see if Santa Claus has come. Santa Claus has become the most beloved Christmas tradition. The image of the jolly old elf flying in a sleigh pulled by reindeers and leaving toys and gifts for every child is known worldwide. The history of Santa Claus begins with a man called Saint Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra. Saint Nicholas was known for his charity and wisdom. Legends tell of him coming from a wealthy family and giving all his money to the poor. He also was said to posses magical powers. He died in 340 AD and was buried in Myra. Late in the 11th century religious soldiers from Italy took the remains of the saint back with them. They built a church in honour of him in the town of Bari, Italy. Soon Christian pilgrims from all over the world came to visit the church of Saint Nicholas. These pilgrims took the legend of Saint Nicholas back to their native lands. As the legend of Saint Nicholas spread it would take on the characteristics of each country. In Europe during the 12th century Saint Nicholas Day became a day of gift giving and charity. Germany, France and Holland celebrated December 6th as a
religious day and gave gifts to their children and the poor. When the Dutch colonists traveled to America, they brought with them their Sinterklaas, an austere bishop who wore a red bishop costume and rode on a white horse. The American image of Sinterklaas would gradually evolve into that of a jolly old elf. He was first described as a plump and jolly old Dutchman. In 1823 Sinterklaas/Saint Nicholas’ metamorphosis continued with the publication of Clement Moore’s poem, A Visit from St. Nicholas (Twas the night before Christmas...). In the 1860s cartoonist Thomas Nast drew pictures of a plump and kindly Santa Claus. This image was becoming ingrained in the minds of people. As time went on this image of Santa Claus travelled across the globe.

Really Really Big Questions about life, the Universe and everything Stephen Law, Nishant Choksi
100 Really Really Big Questions is an unusual and fun introduction to philosophy that explores life’s important but often unanswered questions. Readers will be able to explore the history of thought and the great thinkers and learn how to think rationally for themselves. Mindteasers, optical illusions and thought experiments make this philosophic journey unforgettably fun.
Grubtown Tales: Stinking Rich and Just Plain Stinky Philip Ardagh Winner of the 7 - 14 yr old category of the Roald Dahl Funny Prize 2009. You cannot fail to find the town of Grubtown and its inhabitants hysterically funny. What goes on defies belief but if you’ve read books by Phillip Ardagh before then you’ll know what we mean. In addition to getting a belly-full of laughs readers must be aware that the disgusting habits of most of the inhabitants could well rub off on the reader if they’re not careful!
The Penguin Who Wanted to Find Out Jill Tomlinson This is a perfect story for animal lovers young and old, filled with tenderness and love combined with a subtle humour. Soft focus illustrations take readers right into the cold world of the penguins living in Antarctica. The beautiful pictures provide the perfect background for a story that’s also full of information about the life of a young penguin. Young Otto and his friend Leo are still small enough to be perched on their father’s feet but they are old enough to begin to ask questions about the amazing world around them. Through their questions and their dad’s answers the wonderful world of penguins is revealed.
A Christmas Carol
Nativity! This Christmas, primary school teacher Paul Maddens (Martin Freeman) is being charged with the biggest challenge of his life - mounting the school’s musical version of the Nativity. Competing against the posh neighbouring school for the honour of the best reviewed show in town, the stakes are raised when Paul idly boasts that his ex-girlfriend Jennifer (Ashley Jensen), a Hollywood producer, is coming to see his show with a view to turning it into a film. The only trouble is - they haven’t spoken in years. With eccentric teaching assistant Mr Poppy (Marc Wootton) fuelling his ‘little white lie’, Maddens suddenly finds himself a local celebrity and at the centre of quarelling parents and over-excited children desperate in their bid for fame and fortune. Now Maddens’ only hope is to get back in touch with Jennifer and lure Hollywood to town so that everybody’s Christmas wishes come true.
Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 - The Squeakquel Released 21st December Pop sensations Alvin, Simon and Theodore end up in the care of Dave Seville’s twenty-something nephew Toby (Levi). But the Chipmunks unexpectedly meet their match in three singing chipmunks known as The Chipettes -– Brittany, Eleanor and Jeanette. Romantic and musical sparks are ignited when the Chipmunks and Chipettes square off.

l... Life is Loca day y r e v e y l l Shop loca Our nation of shopkeepers is in decline and it is up to us to reverse this trend and shop locally supporting our local economy and traders. We always feel better when someone is talking to us. We like it when we can browse in peace. We want to ask for assistance at the food counter and have someone tell us why they prefer a locally sourced product and that they know the farmer who reared it! The fact is that if you support your local butcher who buys meat from particular farms that he or she knows well, or if you spend money at the shop that sells imported goods carefully sourced by the owner, your money is doing everybody good. You are keeping someone in business, someone who in turn has a stake in the neighbourhood both as a thriving area and a great place to live. We all know the politics of shopping, and that is reason enough to be thinking local and independent, but let’s not leave out the pleasure of the experience – because shopping is not just about the goods you take home, or how much money you spend in a big city or town, shopping in Midsomer Norton and Radstock gives you back the essential community that modern life has ruined. If you are not feeling great, a friendly face can cheer you up. If you want a bit of gossip, you won’t get it at the checkout of a multi national store. Shopping is sharing as well as spending; whether it’s popping out for a pint of milk and a chat, foraging in the craft shop and discussing the new methods with the owner, finding the perfect present from the gift shop where everything is hand sourced or just mooching through the high street shops, having a good look around. A real local shop will give you more than you are paying for, because not everything in this life can be bought, and local communities are at the very heart of all of our lives.

s e p i c e R s a m Christ Children’s Mulled Wine
Christmas Biscuits
Celebrate Christmas this year with a traditional winter drink made child-friendly. Children will love the grownup taste of this spiced, non-alcoholic Mulled Wine as will the adults.
Decorating biscuits is such a fun family project. Turn on some christmas music, turn off the TV and spread the sprinkles, candies and sugars out for this fun event.
Ingredients
Ingredients
• 2 liters non-alcoholic grape juice • 2 cups water • 1 cup sugar • 24 whole cloves • 4 cinnamon sticks • The peel of 1 orange and 1 lemon • 1 crushed nutmeg seed • 2-1/2 cups of hot lemon/lime juice
• 3-3/4 cups all purpose flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp salt • 1 cup butter or margarine, softened (not melted!) • 1-1/2 cups granulated sugar • 2 eggs • 2 tsp vanilla extract
Cooking Instructions 1. Heat the water and add the sugar, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and peel. 2. Boil for 5 minutes and leave to simmer for 5 more. 3. Strain this liquid into a large pot and add the citrus juice, heat until it is gently bubbling. 4. Add the 2 litres of grape juice and keep the mixture on a low heat, serve with a slice of lemon.
Cooking Instructions 1. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together in a medium sized bowl. Set aside. 2. Beat butter or margarine, sugar, eggs, and vanilla in a large bowl with electric mixer until fluffy. Gradually add flour mixture and stir with wooden spoon until thoroughly mixed. Cover dough with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for two hours. 3. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/4 inch thick. Cut out circles with a cookie cutter or other round object, such as a glass or round plastic container. Place circles 2” apart on ungreased cookie sheet. 4. Bake for 6-8 minutes, checking after 6 minutes. Biscuits will be done when edges are lightly browned. Do not allow biscuits to get too brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes. Remove from baking sheets to aluminum foil on a flat surface and allow to cool completely.

Freestyle football tricks are about expressing yourself, like an art takes time but worth it in the end. You can show off amazing skills performed with a football with various tricks and moves. Stars across the world use these on and off the field giving them there own trademark names. Good luck and remember practice make perfect.
Atw (Around the World)
Htw (Hop the World)
Toe bounce
A complete revolution around the ball using your foot. As you are juggling, hit the ball with either the inside or outside of the foot (depending on which way you are going around the ball) to give it a bit of a spin. Your foot should make a complete revolution around the ball and come back under the ball to continue juggling. It is perhaps one of the most basic freestyle tricks. Practice is the key.
A touch with one foot, and the opposite foot goes around the ball outside to inside and comes around and under to touch the ball, and to continue juggling.
The ball is allowed to drop to your standing foot. The other leg swings around over the ball as the ball bounces off the standing foot and comes back up again. Swinging your leg outside to inside is the most common and generally the easier way to perform this trick, however, you can also perform a toe bounce with your leg swinging over the ball inside to outside. Balance is the key.
Side slap A very simple trick that is not used very often. Beginners will try this and perform it very easily while thinking it’s an amazing move. As the ball is dropping to the ground you first step over the ball and let it bounce. On the way back up your other trailing leg pounds the ball down to the ground again from behind the leg you stepped over with and should now be your supporting leg.
Headstall Balance the ball on your head roughly where the hairline should be.
22 22
Crossover A simple but nice looking move. You jump up and swing one leg around the ball while having a trailing leg underneath that leg which kicks the ball up from under the leg you swung around the ball with.
Piledriver From footstall, the ball is lifted and slammed against the floor using the shin. This can be used to go into any move such as atw, crossover, tatw etc.
Dislocated Knee Bring your leg up. The ball makes contact with the knee but you also kick out with your foot and the ball kind of pops up from your knee as you pull your foot back.
Rainbow
Aeroplane or Back Roll
Catch the ball between your feet. One foot (usually the dominant one) rolls the ball up your support leg. Then, with your support leg, bring the backheel up and flick the ball up.
From juggling you kick the ball up into the air so it makes contact with your right shoulder, then spin round making the ball spin across the top of your back and off your left shoulder to carry on juggling.
